These days I use Ohmori Factory’s Tackle-Auto No.4 spinning reel extensively. The more I use it, the more I know it. The more I know it, the more I like it. It’s not one of the most state-of-the-art reels, but it is well designed. This morning when I was using it at Saruwatari in Nonami, an idea flashed into my mind and I felt I finally understood why its spool is shaped like that. Compared to those of more modern reels, the width of the spool edge is considerably larger, as shown in one of the above photos. Actually PENN Jigmaster 500 gave me a hint.

As I explained in my past posts (No. 533 and No. 555), Jigmaster 500 has “Easy-Thumb Spool Flanges” at the both ends of its spool, and you should put your thumb on the flange in order to adjust the spin of the spool. It occurred to me this morning that the same was true for Ohmori Factory’s reels. The edge of its spool is so wide that you can put your finger on it and gain good traction in order to slow down the spin of the spool. In other words, you can help the drag of reel with your fingers when you are fighting with a very powerful fish. Modern spinning reels have more powerful drags than that of Tackle-Auto No.4, so they might not need you fingers’ help, but the designer at Ohmori Factory might have thought you want to use your fingers to help the drag to stop a sprint of a big fish. This feature might have been more common among more reel manufacturers in the past. The more I know it, the more I love it.
（過去の投稿（No.533とNo. 555）で説明したように、ジグマスター500のスプールの両端には「簡単な親指操作のためのフランジ」が付いており、このフランジに親指を乗せることでスプールの回転を調整するようになっています。大森製作所のリールも同じだと、今朝、気づいたのです。スプールエッジの幅が広いため、そこに指を置いた時、スプールの回転を抑えるための力を得やすいのです。つまり、パワフルな魚とファイトしている時に、指を使って、リールのドラグを補助することができるのです。最近のスピニングリールのドラグは、タックル・オート No.4より強力なので、指の力を借りる必要はないのでしょう。しかし、大森製作所の設計者は、大物の疾走を止めるために、ドラグだけでなく指を使うことも必要かもしれないと考えたのだと思います。昔はもっと多くのリールメーカーが、この機能を採用していたのかもしれません。分かってくればくるほど、好きになっていきます。）
