(No. 1149) No Fish at Mitsu, Sanami, and Kaka Harbors (御津港、佐波港、そして加賀港にて釣果なし)

Like 10 days ago, the sea was very rough again, and I tried to catch the Japanese sea bass inside the harbors and failed again. I didn’t see any other fishermen this morning except for when I arrived at Sanami Harbor. He looked like a lure fisherman, but before I started fishing there, he was gone. I suppose what he was doing was the same as I was doing: the wide-area run-and-gun style fishing.

（10日前と同じく海は大荒れとなり、私は港内でスズキを狙ったのですが、またも失敗でした。今朝は、佐波港に着いた時を除けば、他の釣り人の姿はありませんでした。彼はルアー釣り師のようでしたが、私が釣りを始める前にいなくなってしまいました。おそらく、彼がやっていたのは私と同じ、広域ラン＆ガン方式の釣りだったのでしょう。）

(No. 1148) No Fish at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて釣果なし)

It was a sea change. Literally. Recently there were a lot of baitfish along the shore of Shimane Peninsula. But this morning there was none at least around Safuki-bana in Nonami. That fact that the height of the tide was extremely low this morning might have impacted the baitfish? The sea felt very empty. Strange.

（英語で sea change といえば「大変化」という意味です。今日は文字通り sea change でした。このところ島根半島の沿岸にはたくさんのベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）がいたのです。しかし今朝は、少なくとも野波のサフキ鼻周辺にベイトフィッシュは全くいませんでした。今朝は潮位が異常に低かったのですが、それが影響しているのでしょうか？　海は、とても空っぽに感じられました。奇妙です。）

(No. 1147) No Fish at Naka-bana in Nonami (野波の中鼻にて釣果なし)

The waves were a bit too high for going to Safuki-bana in Nonami this morning, so I made a U-turn at one of parking spaces along Cherry Road. There was someone at the parking space, but I was not aware of who he was. When I was preparing at another parking space for Saruwatari or Naka-bana for going to Naka-bana (because Saruwatari was occupied), the car that I had seen at the parking space where I made the U-turn arrived. The person got out of the car and talked to me. His voice sounded familiar. Actually he was T-san, who I occasionally see at Safuki-bana or Saruwatari. It was a wonderful reunion. After having a nice chat with him, I went to Naka-bana. The sea was choppy and looked promising, but no fish attacked my lures. Still, I was far from being dissatisfied. Having a reunion and a nice chat with a fishing buddy is more than enough.

（今朝は、野波のサフキ鼻へ行くには波がちょっと高過ぎたので、チェリーロード沿いの駐車場の１つでUターンをしました。その駐車場には、どなたかいらっしゃったのですが、私はその人物が誰であるかに気づきませんでした。猿渡あるいは中鼻へ行くための駐車場で、中鼻へ行くための準備をしている時（猿渡には先客があったのです）、Uターンをした駐車場で見かけた車がやってきました。その人は車から出てくると、私に話しかけてきました。聞き覚えのある声です。実はその人は、時々、サフキ鼻や猿渡で出会うＴさんだったのです。私たちは再会を喜び合いました。楽しいおしゃべりをした後、私は中鼻へ行きました。海は波立っていて、良さそうな感じでしたが、ルアーを襲う魚はいませんでした。しかし、私は不満足であったわけでは決してありません。釣り友達と再会して楽しくおしゃべりできるだけで、十分すぎるのです。）

(No. 1146) A Few Bites at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて数回のバイト)

As I reported on my previous post, I was wavering between to catch the yellowtail amberjack with my biggest plugs or to catch the false albacore with my smallest jigs. By this morning I had decided to take the latter approach. So I brought three Glass Minnows of Shore Lures to Saruwatari in Nonami. When I was in New York about 10 years ago, whoever wanted to catch the false albacore used a small jig and retrieved it as quickly as possible with a fine leader. That’s what I did this morning, and now my arms are a bit tired. I had been at Saruwatari for about 3 hours since 7 a.m. Nothing happened except for a very short period of time around 9 a.m. There were a few sharp bites on one of my glass minnows. I was not sure what it was. It might be the false albacore. 

（前回の投稿で報告した通り、私は迷っていました。いちばん大きいプラグでヒラマサを釣るべきか、いちばん小さいジグでスマガツオを釣るべきか。しかし今朝までには、後者のアプローチを取ることに決めていました。私は、ショア・ルアーズのグラス・ミノーを３つ、野波の猿渡に持ち込みました。約10年前、私がニューヨークにいた時、スマガツオを釣りたい人は誰でも、細いリーダーで小さなジグを使い、できるだけ速く巻くのでした。今朝、私もそうしたので、今は腕が、少しだるいです。午前７時から３時間ほど、猿渡にいました。午前９時前後の非常に短い間を除けば、何も起きませんでした。グラス・ミノーの１つに、数回、鋭いバイトがありました。それが何であったのかは、わかりません。スマガツオだったのかもしれません。）

(No. 1145) No Fish at Taka-hana and Sakitaka-hana in Sanami (佐波の高鼻と先高鼻にて釣果なし)

The waves were unexpectedly high this morning, so that I had to give up going to either Saruwatari or Safuki-bana in Nonami. Instead I went to Taka-hana and Sakitaka-hana beyond Sanami Harbor. Unlike Saruwatari or Safuki-bana, where I rarely see any other fishermen, there were two lure fishermen standing on the rocky beach and two other lure fishermen floating on kayaks. I talked to those two fishermen on the rocks. They had caught young Japanese amberjacks. Realizing that I was for the yellowtail amberjack, not the Japanese amberjack, one of the fishermen told me almost sorrowfully that the coveted fish had not been caught since the beginning of November. However, he also told me that the false albacore had been caught. So now I am wavering between to catch the yellowtail amberjack with my biggest plugs or to catch the false albacore with my smallest jigs.

（今朝は予想外に波が高く、野波の猿渡あるいはサフキ鼻に行くのは断念しました。代わりに佐波港の先にある高鼻と先高鼻に行きました。他の釣り人をほとんど見かけない猿渡やサフキ鼻と違って、磯にルアー釣り師が２人、カヤックに浮かんでいるルアー釣り師が２人いました。私は磯の２人と話をしました。彼らにはワカナ（若いブリ）が釣れていました。私が、ワカナではなく、ヒラマサを狙っていることに気づいた釣り師の一人は、ほとんど悲しそうに、私に言いました。11月の初め以来、誰もが憧れるその魚は釣れていないのだ、と。しかし、彼はスマガツオが釣れているとも言いました。そこで私は今、迷っています。いちばん大きいプラグでヒラマサを釣るべきか、いちばん小さいジグでスマガツオを釣るべきか。）

(No. 1144) No Fish at Mitsu, Kaka, and Sanami Harbors (御津港、加賀港、そして佐波港にて釣果なし)

The sea has been very rough. The height of waves reached 4 meters yesterday. It was unfortunate. Because now I know that amberjacks are around along the shore of Shimane Peninsula. I have wanted to go to a rocky shore directly facing the Sea of Japan, but it was too dangerous. Instead of looking for the amberjacks, I tried to catch the Japanese sea bass, which might have come inside harbors or bays. When the sea gets very rough, the sea bass tend to come to a calmer water inside harbors or bays. This morning I tried at Mitsu, Kaka, and Sanami Harbors. I saw a few lure fishermen that probably had the similar plan as mine, but none of them seemed to catch the fish.

（海は大荒れです。昨日、波の高さは４メートルに達しました。残念でした。なぜなら、私は青物が島根半島の海岸に来ていることを知っていたからです。私は、日本海に直面する磯に行きたかったのですが、それはあまりにも危険でした。そこで、青物を探す代わりに、私は、港や湾の内側に入ってきているかもしれないスズキを釣ることにしました。海が大荒れになると、スズキは、港や湾の内側の穏やかな海にやって来る傾向があります。今朝、私は御津港、加賀港、そして佐波港で試してみました。おそらく私と同じような考えでいた数人のルアー釣り師を見ましたが、誰にも魚は釣れていないようでした。）

(No. 1143) Missed Amberjack at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて青物を逃がす)

The amberjacks seemed to have arrived at the shore of Shimane Peninsula. I had to work past midnight yesterday and couldn’t wake up early this morning. When I arrived at Saruwatari, it was already 10 a.m. However, the sea was promisingly choppy, and I felt a big strike could happen at any moment. Such hunch rarely materialize in my case, but today it actually happened. When I was using the Tady AA lure, a powerful fish hit it. The fish pulled very hard and tried to go to the bottom of the sea. At the third or fourth time the fish tried to dive for cover at the bottom, my barbless single hook came off. It might be a medium-sized yellowtail amberjack.

（青物が島根半島沿岸に到着したようです。昨日は真夜中過ぎまで仕事をしなければならなかったので、今朝は早起きができませんでした。猿渡に到着した時には、すでに午前10時を回っていました。しかし、海は良さそうな感じで波立っていて、いつ大きなストライクがあってもおかしくないように感じました。私の場合、そのような予感が現実になることはほとんどないのですが、今日は、それが実際に起きました。テイディのAAルアーを使っていたとき、強力な魚がヒットしました。魚はとても強く引き、海底に向かおうとしました。魚が根に隠れようとして潜ろうとした３、４回目に、私のバーブレス・シングルフックが外れてしまいました。中型のヒラマサだったかもしれません。）

(No. 1142) Young Japanese Amberjack at Senjojiki in Mitsu (御津の千畳敷にてワカナ)

The weather forecast said yesterday that it would have started raining by daybreak. However, when I woke up around 7 a.m. this morning I found it was not raining. According to the unreliable forecast, it would start raining around 10 a.m. So I decided to take advantage of that no-rain short period. I had to choose a fishing spot from which I could retreat as soon as possible because anyway the rain was imminent. So I chose Senjojiki in Mitsu. It would take less than several minutes to go back to my car from even the tip of Senjojiki. The sea was moderately choppy, and the swell was unexpectedly powerful. Although I didn’t see any baitfish, I managed to catch a young Japanese amberjack on my Tady TLC lure.

（昨日の天気予報では、夜明けまでには雨が降り始めるだろうとのことでした。しかし、朝７時頃に目が覚めてみると、雨は降っていなかったのです。当てにならない天気予報によれば、雨は午前10時頃から降り始めるとのことだったので、雨が降らないその短い時間を利用することにしました。ともかく雨は迫ってきているので、できるだけ早く撤退できる釣り場を選ばねばなりませんでした。そこで御津の千畳敷を選びました。千畳敷の先端からでも、車に戻るのに数分もかかりません。海は適度に波立っており、うねりは、思いの外、迫力があるのでした。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）は見えませんでしたが、テイディのTLCルアーでワカナ（若いブリ）が釣れました。）

(No. 1141) Overwhelming Power of Nature at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて圧倒的な自然力)

I was too busy this morning to do fishing, but I was so interested in the fate of my new “road” that I had constructed 4 days ago. No typhoon had made a landfall since the construction, but the sea got rough yesterday and the waves might have reached 4 meters high. This morning I climbed down the path in the woods just to see my “road,” without carrying my fishing equipment. I was curious about how it had survived the potentially 4-meter high waves. The answer was brutal. My glorious new “road” had been completely destroyed. It was not unexpected, but still I got amazed.

（今朝は忙しかったので釣りをすることはできませんでしたが、４日前に建設した新しい「道路」の運命にとても興味がありました。道路の建設以来、台風こそ上陸してはいないものの、昨日は海が荒れて、波の高さが４メートルに達した可能性があるのです。今朝、私は「道路」を確認することだけを目的として、釣り道具を持たずに、林の中の小道を降りていきました。高さ４メートルに達した可能性のある波を、私の「道路」がどう生き延びたのかに関心があったのです。その答えは、残酷なものでした。私の輝かしい新しい「道路」は完全に破壊されていました。予想外ではなかったものの、それでも驚きでした。）

(No. 1140) Changing Stepping-Stones into Road and No Fish at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて飛び石を道に変えるも釣果なし)

This morning I was not so much a fisherman but a construction worker. Because there was few baitfish around Safuki-bana and I was unlikely to catch the yellowtail amberjack, I started reinforcing the stepping-stones which I built yesterday. I placed heavy rocks on the stones and then filled the gaps among the rocks with smaller stones of various sizes. Soon I realized that what I was doing was not just reinforcing the stepping-stones but building a road. A strong typhoon might probably destroy it, but now it became a bit easier to go to Safuki-bana.

（今朝の私は、釣り人というよりは、建設作業員でした。サフキ鼻周辺にはベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）が少なく、ヒラマサが釣れそうにないので、私は、昨日作った飛び石の補強を始めました。飛び石の上に重い岩を置き、その隙間を大小さまざまな小石で埋めました。すぐに、私がやっているのは飛び石の補強ではなく、道路の建設であることに気づきました。強い台風が来たら壊れてしまいそうですが、これで少し楽にサフキ鼻に行けるようになりました。）

(No. 1139) Building Stepping-Stones Again and No Fish at Safuki-bana in Nonami (再び飛び石づくりと、野波のサフキ鼻にて釣果なし)

No one can predict nature. At least I can’t. While there were plenty of baitfish around Saruwatari yesterday morning, there were very few around Safuki-bana this morning. If I had gone to Saruwatari this morning, would I have seen plenty of baitfish? Could some particularities of Saruwatari attract baitfish exclusively? That was possible, but I didn’t think that was the case. All that I can say is that nature is beyond our assumption. At least my assumption. I didn’t feel I would catch any fish around Safuki-bana this morning, so I quit fishing earlier than usual and tried to build a better stepping-stones at the spot, where I would always get my foot wet when the tide is high. My first stepping-stones that I had built a month ago was already washed away by the waves. This time I used much heavier stones. I hope the new stepping-stones withstand the pressure of waves, but I know it is impossible to overestimate the power of nature.

（誰も自然を予測することはできません。少なくとも私には無理です。昨日の朝、猿渡周辺にはベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）がたくさんいましたが、今朝、サフキ鼻周辺にはベイトフィッシュはほとんどいませんでした。今朝、もしも猿渡に行っていたら、ベイトフィッシュをたくさん見れたのでしょうか？　猿渡の特別な何かが、ベイトフィッシュを独占的に引き寄せるのでしょうか？　それはあり得るでしょうが、私はそういうことではないと思います。ただ言えることは、自然は私たちの想定を超えているということです。少なくとも私の想定は超えています。今朝、サフキ鼻周辺は釣れそうになかったので、釣りはいつもより早めに切り上げて、満潮時にいつも足が濡れてしまう地点に、より良い飛び石を作ろうと試みました。１カ月前に最初に作った飛び石は、すでに波にさらわれているのです。今回は、かなり重い石を使用しました。新しい飛び石が波の圧力に耐えられることを願っているものの、自然の力を過大評価することが不可能なことも分かっています。）

(No. 1138) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

Because I was indecisive about where to go fishing this morning, I wasted some precious golden time. When I reached Saruwatari, it was already after 7 a.m., but the sea was still full of life. There were plenty of baitfish. Boils appeared several times within my casting distance. Just below where I was standing, some unidentified big fish were swimming around (although they seemed not interested in my lures). I felt the yellowtail amberjack would hit my lures at any moment. I stayed there much later than usual, until almost 10 a.m., but nothing happened. The big predatory fish might not have yet arrived.

（今朝は、どこに行こうか迷ったせいで、貴重なゴールデンタイムを無駄にしてしまいました。猿渡に到着した時は、既に午前７時を過ぎていましたが、それでも海はとても活気に溢れていました。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）がたくさんいました。ルアーが届く範囲内に何度かナブラが立ちました。私が立っている場所のすぐ下で、正体不明の大きな魚が泳ぎ回っていました（私のルアーには興味がないようでしたが）。今にもヒラマサが、ルアーにヒットしそうな予感がしました。いつもよりかなり遅く、午前10時近くまでそこにいましたが、何も起こりませんでした。大きな捕食魚は、まだやって来ていないのかもしれません。）
