(No. 1045) Enjoying Snow Shoveling as Training for Serious Fishing (本格的な釣りのためのトレーニングとして、楽しい雪かき)

If you want to be a good “non-fisherman” in the Shimane Peninsula, you have to stay fit. Otherwise, you might not be able to safely return from a serious rocky shore of the peninsula, such as Safuki-bana and Saruwatari in Nonami. In order to stay fit, you have to take advantage of any opportunities of doing exercise. There was a heavy snowfall overnight, and I woke up this morning to find one of such opportunities spreading in front of me. Instead of a rod and a reel, I took out a big yellow shovel this morning and walked around some neighborhoods looking for anyone who needed my help. I wanted to help as many people, especially ladies without male help, as possible. Two hours later I was tired but at the same time my body was ready for the serious fishing.

（島根半島で「無魚釣り師」になりたいのなら、体調を整えておく必要があります。そうでないと、野波のサフキ鼻や猿渡など、島根半島の本格的な磯から無事に帰ってこられないかもしれないからです。体調を整えるためには、運動できる機会があれば、逃してはいけません。夜中に大雪が降ったため、朝、目覚めた私は、そんな機会が眼の前に広がっていることに気づきました。今朝は、竿とリールの代わりに、大きな黄色いシャベルを持って、近所を歩き回り、助けを必要としている人を探しました。とりわけ、男手のない女性など、できるだけ多くの人のお手伝いをしようと思いました。２時間後、私は疲れていましたが、同時に、私の体は、本格的な釣りをする準備が整っていました。）

(No. 1044) No Fish at Mouth of Kando River (神戸川河口にて釣果なし)

The weather forecast said that the coldest storm in the last 10 years would arrive tomorrow. So I decided to take advantage of the brief calmness before the storm today. I was planning to go to Safuki-bana in Nonami, but the light rain fell briefly just before I left my place this afternoon. I wondered how slippery the path in the woods of Nonami became due to the rain. I didn’t like to pay too much extra attention in the woods. So I changed my mind. I hit the road to Izumo City though I was not sure which fishing spot I wanted to go to in the city. About one hour later I found myself standing at the sandy beach around the mouth of Kando River. I couldn’t see any sign of the imminent storm on the broad horizon. I couldn't see any sign of fish, either.

（天気予報によると、明日、この10年でいちばん寒い嵐がやってくるとのこと。そこで今日は、嵐の前の束の間の静けさを利用することにしました。野波のサフキ鼻に行くつもりでしたが、午後、家を出る直前に、小雨がぱらつきました。野波の林の中の小道は、雨でどれだけ滑りやすくなったのだろうと考えました。林の中であまり余計な気を遣うのは嫌でした。そこで考えを変えたのです。出雲市へ向かうことにしました。ただ、市内のどの釣り場で釣りたいと思っているのか、自分でもよく分かっていませんでした。約１時間後、私は神戸川の河口付近の砂浜に立っていました。広大な水平線の向こうに、近づく嵐の気配はありませんでした。魚の気配もまた、ありませんでした。）

(No. 1043) No Fish at Kirara-Taki-no-shita and at Kuromatsu Sandy Beach (キララ多伎の下と黒松海水浴場にて釣果なし)

I had an appointment in Hamada City today. It takes about three hours by car from Matsue City, where I live, to Hamada City. Between Matsue and Hamada, there are three cities: Izumo, Oda, and Gotsu. I decided to take advantage of today’s long drive. I fished on my way to Hamada and on my way back to Matsue once each. First, I found a nice sandy beach behind the roadside station Kirara-Taki in Izumo. Then, on my way back to Matsue, I found another beach in Gotsu. After I came home, I found out that the beach in Gotsu is Kuromatsu Sandy Beach. Neither spot produced any fish, but throwing lures from completely unfamiliar spots was refreshing.

（今日は浜田市で面会の約束があったのでした。私の住む松江市から浜田市までは、車で３時間くらいかかります。松江と浜田の間には、出雲、大田、そして江津と、３つの市があるのです。私は、今日のロングドライブを利用することにしました。浜田へ行く時と松江に帰る時、それぞれ１回ずつ釣りをしたのです。まず、出雲市にある道の駅「キララ多伎」の裏に、いい感じの砂浜を見つけました。そして、松江に戻る道中、江津市で別の砂浜を見つけました。帰宅後、その江津市の砂浜が黒松海水浴場であることを知りました。どちらも釣果はなかったものの、まったく知らない場所でルアーを投げるのは新鮮でした。）

(No. 1042) No Fish along Sakai-suido Waterway and Mihonoseki (境水道と美保関沿岸にて釣果なし)

The weather forecast said that the waves would reach 3-meter high this morning along the northern shore of Shimane Peninsula facing the Sea of Japan. So I went to the Sakai-suido Waterway because the waves couldn’t affect it very much. I did the run-and-gun style fishing along the waterway and at Mihonoseki area. There were a lot of fishermen throwing smaller jigs, but, as far as I know, no one caught any fish. I talked with a few of them, and all of them said that a lot of young Japanese amberjacks had been caught yesterday but seemed already gone by this morning. I missed a great opportunity by just one day, but I was still happy because throwing lures with the Newell G332-F was fun enough for me and, most of all, I am a great “non-fisherman.”

（天気予報によると、日本海に面した島根半島北部の海岸では、今朝は波の高さが３メートルに達するとのことでした。そこで、波があまり影響しないであろう境水道へ行きました。水道沿いと美保関で、ラン＆ガン方式の釣りをしました。小さいジグを投げている人がたくさんいましたが、私の知る限り、誰にも何も釣れていません。何人かの釣り人と話したところ、昨日はハマチがたくさん釣れたけれど、今朝までには姿を消してしまったようだと、誰もが言っていました。私は、たった１日の差で絶好のチャンスを逃してしまったわけですが、それでも幸せでした。なぜなら、ニューウェルG332-Fでルアーを投げるのは十分に楽しいですし、何よりも私は、偉大なる「無魚釣り師」なのですから。）

(No. 1041) Casting Practice with Newell G332-F at Etomo Harbor (恵曇港にてニューウェルG332-Fのキャスティング練習)

I sold my Shimano Scorpion MD and obtained another Newell reel, the G332-F. The G447-F, which I have used since I bought it on an online Japanese second-hand tackle shop four months ago, is a bit too large. I love it, but it’s a big reel more suited for trolling than for casting. So I sold my Scorpion MD in order to create a small fund for bidding for the G332-F listed on eBay. Fortunately I won it within my budget. As I expected, the new reel is easier to cast a lure with. I felt I would catch a big fish very soon.

（シマノのスコーピオンMDを売却し、新たなニューウェルのリール、G332-Fを入手しました。４カ月前に日本の中古タックル店のオンラインストアで購入してから愛用していたG447-Fは、ちょっと大きすぎるのです。大好きなリールなのですが、キャスティングよりもトローリングに適した大きさです。そこで、スコーピオンMDを売って、eBayで出品されていたG332-Fに入札するための、わずかな資金を作りました。すると幸運にも、予算の範囲内で、落札できたのです。予想通り、ルアーをキャストするのが、より楽でした。すぐにでも大物が釣れそうな気がします。）

(No. 1040) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

I knew I would have only 30 minutes to fish at Saruwatari this morning due to my household chores, but I needed to go there. Just going to Saruwatari or Safuki-bana can be good exercise, and I wanted to do some exercise. The sea around Saruwatari was very calm. As you can clearly see it in one of the above photos, there was shiome (front; a boundary between two distinct water currents/masses). I was not sure if the shiome was good for my fishing or not, but it looked promising.  Getting encouraged, I kept throwing my lures as many times as possible during the predetermined 30 minutes with unwavering anticipations, but nothing happened as usual.

（今朝は家事をする必要があったので、猿渡で30分間しか釣りができないことは分かっていたものの、どうしても行きたくなったのでした。猿渡やサフキ鼻へは、行くだけでもいい運動になりますし、私は何か運動をしたかったのです。猿渡周辺の海はとても穏やかでした。上の写真の１枚ではっきりと見えるように、潮目ができていました（潮目とは、２つの潮の流れが接触する境目のこと）。潮目ができるのが、私の釣りにとって良いことなのかどうかわかりませんでしたが、釣れそうな感じがしました。励まされた私は、揺るがぬ期待に胸を膨らませて、定められた30分間、何度もルアーを投げ続けました。しかし、いつもと同様、何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 1039) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

When I was climbing down to the edge of Maruiwa in Owashi, I realized one small area on the surface looked different from the surrounding area. I don’t know how to describe the difference. The texture of waves on the area was noticeably different. I hoped some predatory fish were lurking under the mysterious area. Fortunately it was within my casting distance, but whatever lure I used didn’t produce anything. The mysterious area disappeared 7 to 8 minutes later with the noticeable distinction, and only a perfectly uniform surface was left.

（大芦の丸岩の先端に降りていく時、海面の小さな一角が、周囲と違って見えることに気がつきました。その違いをどう表現したらいいのかわかりません。波の質感が明らかに違うのです。私は、その不思議な一角の下に、何か捕食魚が潜んでいることを願いました。幸いルアーが届く距離でしたが、どんなルアーを使っても釣果にはつながりませんでした。７〜８分後、その不思議な一角は顕著な違いと共に消え去り、完全に均一な海面だけが残されました。）

(No. 1038) No Fish at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて釣果なし)

I was looking at Safuki-bana. I was able to reach Safuki-bana this morning, but something in the sea discouraged me from doing it. It was like a premonition. I felt the swells would be stronger and I might end up being stranded there. So I started throwing my lures from one of nearby safer rocks and stayed there until I quit it about 10 a.m. No fish responded to my lures. When I was leaving, I noticed that the swells were indeed stronger.

（私はサフキ鼻を見ていました。今朝、サフキ鼻に到達することは可能だったのですが、海の様子がなんだか気になり、行くのをやめました。予感のようなものでした。私は、これからうねりが強くなり、サフキ鼻に取り残されることになるかもしれないと感じたのです。そこで、より安全な最寄りの岩からルアーを投げ始め、午前10時頃に納竿するまで、そこにいました。帰り支度をしていた時、確かにうねりが強くなっていることに気がつきました。）

(No. 1037) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Casting Practice at Lake Shinji (倉内湾にて釣果なし、宍道湖にてキャスティング練習)

Bad weather kept me from going fishing for a while. Whenever it was fine, unfortunately I was busy doing some other things. This morning I was finally able to go to Kurauchi Bay. Although I wanted to go to either Saruwatari or Safuki-bana in Nonami, the waves were too high for standing at such a serious fishing spot. The waves were not too high at Kurauchi Bay, but the head winds were so strong and chilly that I couldn’t throw my lures more than 10 times. But probably that was enough. Most of my past catches of the Japanese sea bass at the bay happened within my first several casts. However, fewer than 10 casts didn’t satisfy my appetite for throwing lures with my Newell G447-F reel. I don’t feel such an appetite with a spinning reel very much. I feel it only with a certain type of conventional reel, such as the Newell and the PENN Jigmaster. I drove to Lake Shinji and enjoyed my casting practice very much.

（悪天候のため、しばらく釣りに行くことができませんでした。晴れていたときは、あいにく他の用事で忙しくしていました。今朝、ようやく倉内湾に行くことができました。本当は野波の猿渡かサフキ鼻に行きたかったのですが、ああいう本格的な釣り場に立つには、波が高すぎました。倉内湾では、波はそれほど高くなかったものの、向かい風が強くて肌寒く、ルアーを10回以上投げることができませんでした。しかし、おそらくそれで十分だったと思います。過去に倉内湾で釣れたスズキは、ほとんどが最初の数投で釣れているのです。とはいえ、10回も投げられなかったため、ニューウェルG447-Fでルアーを投げたいという私の欲求は満たされませんでした。スピニングリールでは、そのような欲求はあまり感じません。ニューウェルやPENNのジグマスターなど、ある種の両軸リールでないと感じないのです。私は、宍道湖まで行き、キャスティング練習をとても楽しみました。）

(No. 1036) No Fish (or No Fishing) at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の南防にて釣果（あるいは釣り）なし)

This is my first post in 2023 but should have been my second. I went to Etomo Harbor yesterday, but I was not able to do fishing. Due to the bad weather? No. It wasn’t too bad. I was unable to do fishing because I didn’t carry a good two-piece rod. Indeed I carried two pieces, but the one was from one two-piece rod and the other was from another two-piece rod. I tried to joint those mismatched pieces at the harbor, but obviously they didn't fit. How did I make such a ridiculous mistake? I released my annual New Year’s rap yesterday just before I went fishing. The effort to release the song made me so exhausted and also excited that, when I was leaving for fishing, I inadvertently grabbed those two different pieces (They are even different in color). So I went to Etomo Harbor today again to do my first fishing in 2023. No fish responded, so there is not much to write about fishing. （これは、2023年最初の投稿ですが、本来は２番目となるべきものでした。昨日、私は恵曇港に行きましたが、釣りができなかったのです。悪天候のため？　いいえ、天候はそれほど悪くありませんでした。釣りができなかったのは、まともな２ピースロッドを携帯していなかったからです。２ピースあったことはあったのですが、１つは１本の２ピースロッドからのもの、もう１つは別の２ピースロッドからのものでした。港でそのちぐはぐな２ピースをつなげようとしたものの、当然ながら、合いません。私は、どうしてこんな馬鹿げた失敗をしてしまったのでしょう？　昨日、釣りに行く直前に、毎年恒例の年賀ラップをリリースしました。リリースするために頑張った私は、かなり疲れ、また興奮してもいたので、釣りに出かける時にうっかり（色まで違う）バラバラの２ピースを手にしてしまったのです。というわけで、2023年の初釣りをしに、今日もまた恵曇港に行ってきました。魚からの反応はなく、釣りについて書くことはあまりありません。もしも、昨日の私の釣行を無駄にした曲にご関心があるようであれば、YouTubeで聴くことができます。代わりにその曲「Let's Get Political」を楽しんでいただければ、と思います。）
