(No. 1192) Big Needlefish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて大きなダツ)

I remembered how wonderful it is to catch a fish. This evening I caught a fish for the first time since I caught a young Japanese amberjack more than 6 months ago. It was a big needlefish. When I was fast retrieving one of my Roberts Rangers for casting practice with the Avet MXJ6/4 reel, the fish hit the lure. It made a splash, drawing attention from people standing behind me. They watched me landing the fish with a curious and excited expression on their faces. One of them asked, “What kind of fish is it?” I proudly told them what it was. Although no one intentionally tries to catch the needlefish in Lake Shinji because no one wants the fish (They are classified as “Gedou” in Japanese), I don’t mind. All fish look beautiful and are equally valuable.

（魚を釣ることの素晴らしさを思い出しました。今日の夕方、半年以上前にワカナ（若いブリ）を釣って以来となる魚が釣れたのです。大きなダツでした。アベットのMXJ6/4リールでのキャスティング練習のために、ロバーツのレンジャーをファスト・リトリーブしていると、魚がヒットしたのです。魚は水しぶきを上げ、私の後ろに立っていた人たちの注意を引きました。好奇心と興奮に満ちた表情で、彼らは私が魚を釣り上げるのを見守っていました。そのうちの一人が私に尋ねました。「その魚は何ですか？」私は誇らしげに魚の正体を伝えました。宍道湖のダツは、いわゆる「外道」であり、誰も欲しがらず、意図的に釣ろうとする人はいませんが、私は気にしません。どの魚も美しく見えますし、同じように価値があるのです。）

(No. 1191) No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なし)

Since my last post I have been busy compiling a collection of “prefaces” to unwritten theories about one local secondhand bookstore in Matsue. If each of us customers had written a theoretical book or a thesis regarding the bookstore, what kind of preface or introduction would we write to them? That's the idea. The collected “prefaces” could be released by the end of this month. I am going to announce it on this blog when it's published. Anyway I have been too busy to go fishing anywhere except Lake Shinji, which is 5-minute walk away from my place, and I want to ask. Do they catch Japanese sea bass now? There have been much fewer bait fishermen on the shore of the lake this year than previous years, let alone lure fishermen. I have been to the lake a few times since my last post. All that I saw were a big white carp and jumping flathead grey mullets.

（前回の投稿以来、私は、松江のとある古本屋に関する書かれざる理論の「序文」をまとめる仕事に忙殺されています。仮に、私たち客がそれぞれ、その古本屋に関する理論書あるいは論文を書いたとしたら、どんな序文（序説）を私たちはそこに寄せるのだろうか？　それがアイデアでした。この「序文」集は、今月中には発行できると思います。発行されたら、このブログでもお知らせいたします。それにしても忙しくて、歩いて５分の距離にある宍道湖以外には釣りに行けていません。私には尋ねたいことがあるのです。皆さん、スズキは釣れているのですか？　今年はルアー釣り師はおろか、宍道湖の岸辺にいるエサ釣り師の数も、例年よりずっと少ないのです。前回の投稿以来、私は数回、湖に行きました。目撃したのは、大きな白いコイと、ジャンプするボラだけでした。）

(No. 1190) One Strike in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe (宍道湖サンセットカフェの前にてストライク)

Time flies. It’s already May. Which means, the migratory Japanese sea bass has started arriving in Lake Shinji. Which means, I have started seeing regulars on the shore of the lake, some of which are older bait fishermen and others are younger lure fishermen. This evening I went to the shore in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe. I used one of Guppy Lure’s pencil poppers with a spinning tackle, which combination is the most eye-catching. As you may know, whenever I throw lures in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe, the primary purpose is to get tourists interested in my fishing and to encourage them to talk to me. Or to be an object in their pictures of the beautiful sunset. In other words, what I do in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe is not so much real fishing as fishing demonstration. However, this evening a very unusual thing happened. A Japanese sea bass actually hit my lure and caused a splash although it was not hooked. Most tourists around me didn’t understand what had just happened, but a few of them said, “Wow.”

（光陰矢の如し。もう５月ですね。ということは、回遊するスズキが宍道湖に到着し始めているということです。ということは、湖畔で常連さんたちを見かけるようになったということです。年配のエサ釣り師もいれば、若いルアー釣り師もいます。今日の夕方、私は、宍道湖サンセットカフェ前の湖岸へ行ってきました。グッピールアーのペンシル・ポッパーとスピニング・タックルを使用しました。この組み合わせが、いちばん目を引くのです。ご存知かと思いますが、私が宍道湖サンセットカフェ前でルアーを投げるときの最大の目的は、観光客に私の釣りに興味を持ってもらい、話しかけてもらうことです。あるいは、美しい夕日写真の中のオブジェとなることです。つまり、私が宍道湖サンセットカフェ前で行うことは、真剣な釣りというよりは、釣りの演技なのです。しかし、今夕は非常に珍しいことが起きました。フッキングこそしなかったものの、スズキがルアーにヒットし、水しぶきを上げたのです。周りの観光客の多くは、何が起こったのか理解していませんでしたが、何人かは「わあ」と言いました。）
