(No. 1035) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (倉内湾と恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

Just when I was about to climb down to the shore of Kurauchi Bay, a fisherman who had been there climbed up to the parking space. I asked him if he had caught any fish. He said, “No.” Then I asked what fish he had tried to catch. He said, “The Japanese sea bass.” That was the fish I was also trying to catch. Saying to him, “Thank you for the good information,” I wondered if I should go to another fishing spot, but then an idea occurred to me. He had very likely used Japanese lures. “If I catch the fish immediately after he failed, I can prove my American lures are better than his Japanese lures.” So I decided to climb down to the shore. Then I failed, too. Next I tried Nanbo in Etomo Harbor. There were a few fishermen at the chilly breakwater, and all of them said to me that there were no fish. That’s how I finished my last fishing in 2022. I wish you good luck next year! Tight lines!

(No. 1034) No Fish at Mitsu Harbor, Kurauchi Bay, and Nakabo and Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (御津港、倉内湾、そして恵曇港の中防と南防にて釣果なし)

I heard that the Japanese sea bass were plenty along the sandy beach in Izumo City. I was tempted to go there this afternoon, but I decided not to because the waves were a little bit too high according to the weather forecast. Instead, I decided to do the run-and-gun style fishing at more familiar spots in Matsue City. First I went to Mitsu Harbor, but I ended up unable to throw my lures. Professional fishermen were working in and around the harbor. So I skipped Mitsu Harbor and went to Kurauchi Bay. There was no one at the bay. However, the waves and swells were a bit too strong for me to fish comfortably. So I left Kurauchi Bay after throwing one of my lures only two times. Lastly I tried two of the breakwaters in Etomo Harbor. I was completely alone both at Nakabo and Nanbo. I enjoyed throwing my lures in the quiet and a bit sad circumstances.

（出雲市の砂浜にスズキがたくさんいると聞きました。今日の午後、そこへ行ってみたくなりましたが、行かないことにしました。天気予報によれば、波が少し高すぎたのです。代わりに、松江市のもっと馴染みのある場所で、ラン＆ガン方式の釣りをすることにしました。最初は御津港に行ったのですが、結局ルアーを投げることはできませんでした。漁師さんたちが港とその周辺で働いておられたのです。私は、御津港を飛ばして倉内湾へ行きました。湾には誰もいませんでした。しかし、波とうねりが少し強すぎて、快適に釣りをすることができませんでした。ルアーを２回投げただけで、倉内湾を離れました。最後に、恵曇港の２つの防波堤に挑戦しました。中防でも南防でも、私は一人ぼっちでした。静かで少し寂しい環境で、ルアーを投げるのを楽しみました。）

(No. 1033) Young Japanese Amberjack at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にてワカナ)

A few of my fingers were numb with cold when I arrived at Safuki-bana in Nonami this morning. I realized the winter had finally come. The sea was moderately calm, so I got tempted to get over the cliff next to the tip of Safuki-bana in order to go farther. But the occasional swells seemed dangerous enough to discourage me from doing it. Although the surface was calm, I felt the underwater current was not stagnant. In general, the water around Safuki-bana looked fresh. When I was retrieving my Hopkins No=Eql, I suddenly felt some weight on the lure, but I was not sure if it was fish. It didn’t move at first. Then it gradually started to pull. Before the fish completely realized it’s getting caught by a human, I managed to land it. It was a beautiful and young Japanese amberjack.

（今朝、野波のサフキ鼻に着いたとき、数本の指が寒さでかじかんでいました。ついに冬が来たんだなと実感したのです。海は程よく穏やかだったので、サフキ鼻の先端の隣にある崖を乗り越えて、さらに遠くまで行きたい衝動に駆られました。しかし、時折発生するうねりが危険そうなので、思いとどまりました。水面は穏やかだったものの、水中の潮は淀んでいないように感じました。全体として、サフキ鼻周辺の海は新鮮に見えました。ホプキンス No=Eqlを引いていると、突然ルアーに重みを感じたのですが、魚かどうかは分かりません。最初は動かなかったのです。しかし徐々に引き始めました。その魚が、自分は人間に釣られているのだと完全に気付く前に、釣り上げることに成功しました。美しいワカナ（若いブリ）でした。）

(No. 1032) Rehabilitation at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にてリハビリ)

Bad weather, my tight work schedule, and the World Cup have kept me from going fishing at a serious fishing spot such as Saruwatari and Safuki-bana in Nonami for some time. Now the wonderfully thrilling games were finally over, and the weather is getting better. And I am going to be free tomorrow morning albeit only temporarily. So I decided to go to either Saruwatari or Safuki-bana tomorrow morning. It has been almost a month since my last visit to Saruwatari, and during this time the weather has become increasingly severe. I felt I needed to do casting practice before I tried Saruwatari or Safuki-bana tomorrow. I went to Kurauchi Bay to throw my favorite lures as a kind of rehabilitation.

（悪天候、タイトな仕事の日程、そしてワールドカップのせいで、野波の猿渡やサフキ鼻といった本格的な釣り場には、しばらく行けなくなっていました。しかし、素晴らしくスリル満点だった試合たちもついに終わり、また、天気も良くなってきました。そして、一時的なものとはいえ、明日の朝、私は自由になるのです。ということで、明朝、猿渡かサフキ鼻のどちらかに行くことにしました。前回猿渡に行ってから約１カ月が経ち、この間、天候は、ますます厳しいものに変化しています。明日、猿渡やサフキ鼻を試みる前に、キャストの練習が必要だと感じました。一種のリハビリのつもりで倉内湾に行き、愛用のルアーを投げてきました。）

(No. 1031) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay. (倉内湾にて釣果なし)

Lately I have not been able to find a good opportunity to go to a serious fishing spot, such as Saruwatari and Safuki-bana in Nonami. Instead, all that I can do is to take advantage of a short break during a day and go to a more casual fishing spot, such as Kurauchi Bay. Today I went to the bay twice, early in the morning and early in the afternoon. The swell and waves inside the bay were strong enough to create good sarashi (white churning water) at both times. I thought I might catch a nice Japanese sea bass, but the bay seemed completely empty.

（最近、野波の猿渡やサフキ鼻のような本格的な釣り場には、なかなか行く機会がありません。その代わり、私にできるのは、一日のうちの短い休みを利用して、倉内湾のような気軽な釣り場に行くことだけです。今日は早朝と昼過ぎの２回、倉内湾に行ってみました。湾内はうねりや波が強く、いずれの時も良いサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）ができていました。スズキが釣れるかもしれないと思いましたが、湾内はまったく空っぽのようでした。）

(No. 1030) No Fish around Mouth of Hino River and at Kurauchi Bay. (日野川の河口付近と倉内湾にて釣果なし)

I needed to go to Yonago City in Tottori Prefecture yesterday. I decided to take advantage of that rare opportunity. I went to the mouth of the Hino River and threw my favorite lures for about 15 minutes before my appointment in Yonago. During that short period of time, I saw one lure fisherman leave the sandy beach with a catch and another come in. Fish seemed plenty in Yonago. Although my American lures didn’t produce anything there, I still enjoyed it a lot. Today I went to Kurauchi Bay, one of my usual fishing spots in Matsue City. Unlike the sandy beach around the mouth of the Hino River, the shore in the bay is very rocky. No fish responded there, either, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

（昨日は、鳥取県の米子市に行く必要がありました。私は、その貴重な機会を利用することにしました。日野川河口に行き、米子での約束の時間までの15分ほど、お気に入りのルアーを投げてみたのです。その短い時間の間に、釣果を上げたルアー釣り師が一人砂浜を離れ、また一人、来るのが見えました。米子には魚がたくさんいるようです。私のアメリカンルアーでは何も釣れませんでしたが、それでも十分楽しめました。今日は、松江市のいつもの釣り場である倉内湾に行きました。日野川河口付近の砂浜と違って、湾内の岸は岩だらけです。ここでも魚の反応はありませんでしたが、それでも十分楽しめました。）

(No. 1029) Consecutively No Fish at Lake Nakaumi (中海にて引き続き釣果なし)

I saw a few fishermen catching the Japanese sea bass yesterday morning at Lake Nakaumi. So I went back there this morning. Although no fish responded to my big lures this morning too, I enjoyed chatting with a friendly lure fisherman by the small bridge whose name I keep forgetting. When I am at a rocky spot facing the Sea of Japan, such as Saruwatari in Nonami, I rarely find another fisherman to chat with. On the other hand, when I am at Lake Nakaumi or Lake Shinji, I often find good friendly fishermen and enjoy chatting with them.

（昨日の朝、中海で、数人の釣り人がスズキを釣っているを見かけたのです。ということで今朝、私はまた行ってきました。今朝もまた、私の大きなルアーに魚は反応しませんでしたが、名前を思い出せない小さな橋のそばで、フレンドリーなルアー釣り師とのおしゃべりを楽しみました。野波の猿渡のような日本海に面した磯にいると、他の釣り人を見つけて、おしゃべりできるような機会は稀です。一方で、中海や宍道湖にいると、気さくな釣り人によく出会い、おしゃべりを楽しめることがあります。）

(No. 1028) No Fish at Lake Nakaumi (中海にて釣果なし)

Taking advantage of a short free time early in the morning, I planned to do the run-and-gun style fishing at Lake Nakaumi, but the presumed first and the second spots were under construction and already occupied respectively, so I got at a loss where to go first. I just cruised on the lakeside road and found a vacant lot along the shore. That unfamiliar spot became the first. I enjoyed throwing a lure with my Newell G447-F reel. Later, I found another spot where two fishermen were already fishing. Although no fish was caught, I enjoyed a lot chatting with one of them. He visited Matsue from a different part of Shimane Prefecture. I wished him good luck.

（早朝の短い空き時間を利用して、中海でラン＆ガン方式の釣りをしようと思っていましたが、最初の候補地２箇所は、それぞれ工事中そして既に先客ありだったため、私はどこを開始地点にしていいか、途方に暮れました。とりあえず湖岸道路を走っていると、岸辺に空き地がありました。その見慣れない場所が最初の釣り場となりました。ニューウェルG447-Fリールでルアーを投げるのを楽しみました。その後、もう一つ別の場所を見つけました。そこには既に２人の釣り人がいました。魚は釣れなかったものの、そのうちの一人とおしゃべりを楽しました。彼は島根県の別の場所から松江を訪ねてこられたそうです。幸運をお祈りしました。）

(No. 1027) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて釣果なし)

I was busy today for some family obligations, but somehow I managed to go fishing twice in Kurauchi Bay, the first was in the morning and the second was in the late afternoon. The waves were high, and there was a belt of sarashi (white churning water) along the shore. I felt I might catch a big Japanese sea bass, but nothing responded to my lures.

（今日は、いろいろ家庭の用事で忙しかったのですが、どうにか午前と午後遅くの２回、倉内湾に釣りに行くことが出来ました。波が高く、岸沿いにはいい感じのサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）ができていました。大型のスズキが釣れるかもしれないと期待しましたが、何もルアーには反応しませんでした。）

(No. 1026) Casting Practice at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてキャスティング練習)

I have been too busy to go fishing since my last post. I finally became free this afternoon and drove to the sea just to find the waves too high as I had anticipated. I did a U-turn and headed for Lake Shinji. I knew I wouldn’t catch any fish at the lake at this time of the year, but I just wanted to throw a lure as soon and far as possible. Throwing my lures from the shore with my favorite reel, the Newell G447-F, gave me incomparable pleasure.

（前回の投稿以来、忙しくて釣りに行けませんでした。今日の午後、ようやく時間が出来たので海まで行ってみましたが、予想通り、波が高すぎました。私はUターンして宍道湖に向かいました。この時期、宍道湖では釣れないことは分かっていましたが、とにかく、なるべく早く、なるべく遠くへ、ルアーを投げたかったのです。愛用のリール、ニューウェルG447-Fを使って湖岸からルアーを投げてみると、この上ない快感がありました。）

(No. 1025) My Current Favorite Tackle and Two Bites at Saruwatari in Nonami (現在のお気に入りのタックルと、野波の猿渡にて２回のバイト)

As shown in the above photos, I attached a rod guide to the rod clamp of my Newell G447-F reel in order to make it a trigger grip. This makes it easier to cast lures than before. For a conventional reel without the level wind feature, such as the PENN Jigmaster and my Newell G447-F, I like to use a spinning rod. It is because diameters of rod guides are much larger than those of a rod for a low-profile baitcaster or a conventional reel. When using a conventional reel without the level wind feature, you have to use your fingers to wind the line evenly. However, if you know how to take advantage of the wider rod guides of a spinning rod, you don’t always need to use your fingers.

Now my Newell G447-F reel and Gamakatsu Pop Shaft 83 rod (a spinning rod) are my favorite combination. Indeed, Shimano Scorpion MD is an excellent reel, but sometimes I feel it is too excellent. It doesn't take much technique to use that reel. It was as if I were comfortable on a self-driving car. On the other hand, Newell G447-F feels like an old stick-shift car. You need some technique. With the current favorite tackle, I was standing at Saruwatari in Nonami this morning. There were bites on the Hopkins No=Eql. I saw the fish biting it twice, but it didn’t get hooked.

（今、ニューウェルG447-Fリールとガマカツのポップ・シャフト83（スピニングロッド）が、私のお気に入りの組み合わせです。確かにシマノのスコーピオンMDは優秀なリールですが、時々、あまりにも優秀すぎると思うこともあります。あのリールを使うのに、それほどテクニックは必要ありません。まるで、自動運転車に快適に乗っているような感覚があります。一方、ニューウェルG447-Fは古いマニュアル車みたいな感じです。ある程度のテクニックが必要なのです。このお気に入りのタックルで、今朝は野波の猿渡に立っていました。ホプキンス No=Eqlにバイトがありました。魚が２回バイトするのが見えましたが、フッキングには至りませんでした。）

(No. 1024) U.S.-Japan Lure Battle at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて日米ルアー決戦)

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is about to begin. This is a report on another similarly international and competitive battle that began this morning at Safuki-bana in Nonami. Because there were multiple cars already at the parking space for Saruwatari, going to Safuki-bana was the only option left for me. There was another car at the Safuki-bana parking space too, but I didn’t mind and started trekking down toward Safuki-bana. The car was T-san's. He is one of my fishing buddies, whom I occasionally see in Nonami. As soon as I reached Safuki-bana, I challenged T-san to a Japan-U.S. lure duel. He said his lures were only Japanese. Mine were American, of course. Before the battle began, I showed him how to go beyond Safuki-bana. In order to do so, the sea has to be calm enough and you need some athleticism. The battle kicked off about 7:30 a.m. T-san was standing at Safuki-bana, and I was at a spot beyond it. We fought fiercely until about 8:30 a.m. Our battle ended in a draw. Please don’t ask the score.

（2022年FIFAワールドカップが始まろうとしています。本稿は、今朝、野波のサフキ鼻で始まった、同じように国際的で拮抗した戦いについての報告です。猿渡の駐車場にはすでに複数の車が駐められていたので、サフキ鼻に行くしか選択肢は残っていませんでした。サフキ鼻の駐車場にも車が一台あったのですが、私は気にせず、サフキ鼻に向かう小道を降り始めました。その車はＴさんのものだったのです。彼は、野波で時々出会う釣り友達の一人です。サフキ鼻に着くや否や、私はＴさんに日米ルアー対決を挑みました。彼は自分のルアーは日本製だと言いました。私のルアーは当然、アメリカンです。戦いの火蓋が切って落とされる前に、Ｔさんにサフキ鼻の先に行く方法を教えてあげました。そうするためには、海が十分に穏やかでなければならず、また、ある程度の運動能力も必要です。Ｔさんはサフキ鼻に立ち、私はその先の場所に立ちました。我々は、８時半頃まで激闘を繰り広げましたが、結局、引き分けに終わりました。スコアは尋ねないでください。）

(No. 1023) Newell G447-F vs. Scorpion MD at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にてニューウェルG447-F 対 スコーピオンMD)

I brought my two favorite reels to Saruwatari today, Newell G447-F and Shimano Scorpion MD 300. In case the yellowtail amberjack or any other predatory fish were not around Saruwatari, I planned to enjoy myself comparing those two reels. Regardless of the originally intended applications of those reels, I used both of them for the same, one and only application: casting American topwater lures from a rocky shore. Both worked fine, but probably I enjoyed more with the Newell G447-F than with the Scorpion MD. Compared to the Newell reel, the Shimano reel is a more modern reel, and naturally it is easier to throw lures with. On the other hand, you have to learn some techniques if you want to throw a lure with the Newell. Probably that’s the reason why I enjoyed more.

（今日の猿渡には、ニューウェルG447-Fとシマノ・スコーピオンMD300という愛用のリール２台を持参しました。万が一、ヒラマサや他の捕食魚がいなかった場合に備えて、この２つのリールを比較して楽しむつもりでした。リール本来の用途は無視して、どちらのリールも、アメリカン・トップウォーター・ルアーを磯から投げるという唯一無二の用途に使いました。どちらのリールも良かったのですが、おそらく、スコーピオンMDよりもニューウェルG447-Fのほうが、より楽しめたのではないかと思います。スコーピオンMDは、ニューウェルに比べて、よりモダンなリールですから、当然ルアーも投げやすくなっています。一方、ニューウェルのリールでルアーを投げようと思うと、それなりのテクニックを身につけなければいけません。それが、より楽しめた理由かもしれません。）

(No. 1022) Unexpected Bite and Incredible Feat at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて意外なバイトと信じがたい偉業)

The weather forecast said that the sea was getting rough and the rain would start falling soon. So I decided to go to neither Safuki-bana nor Saruwatari in Nonami, both of which are serious fishing spots. I instead went to Kurauchi Bay this morning, which is a more casual fishing spot. A few surprises waited for me there. First I was surprised to see a lot of cigarette butts left there with a beer can and some plastic packages for fishing tackle. I decided to pick them up later and started throwing my lures anyway. I had expected to see a choppy rough water inside the bay and wondered I might catch a Japanese sea bass there, but actually the water was very calm. It was a bit disappointment.

（天気予報によると、海は荒れつつあり、また、じきに雨が降り出すとのことでした。そこで私は、本格的な釣り場である野波のサフキ鼻や猿渡に行くのはやめることにしました。代わりに今朝は、もっと気軽な釣り場である倉内湾に行きました。そこではいくつかの驚きが私を待っていました。まず驚いたのは、タバコの吸殻が、缶ビールや釣具のプラスチック・パッケージと一緒に、たくさん放置されていたことです。私は、後で拾おうと思い、とりあえずルアーを投げ始めました。きっと湾の中は波立っていてスズキが釣れるのではないかと想定していましたが、実際には海はとても穏やかでした。ちょっと残念でした。）

When I was regretting not having gone to either Safuki-bana or Saruwatari, one fish attacked my Atom Atomizer twice in succession. Though the fish was not hooked, I got pleasantly surprised. Then I found one of cigarette butts floating on the surface. The wind must have blown it away, and I regretted not having cleaned up the litter as soon as I found them. I threw the Super Strike Zig Zag, one of my favorite lures, at the floating cigarette butt. I didn’t think I was able to catch it. It was more like a gesture intended for the deity of fishing. However, to my surprise, my Zig Zag miraculously caught the cigarette butt and brought it to me. The lure held it firmly in its mouse. I patted my Zig Zag as if it had been my lovely dog with which I had played fetch.

（サフキ鼻や猿渡に行かなかったことを悔やんでいた時、１匹の魚が２回続けてアトム・アトマイザーに襲いかかりました。魚は針にかかりませんでしたが、私は嬉しい驚きを感じました。その時、水面にタバコの吸殻が浮いているのを見つけたのです。風で飛ばされたのでしょう。ゴミを見つけた時にすぐに拾わなかったことを、私は後悔しました。私はその浮いた吸殻に向かって、お気に入りのルアーの一つ、スーパーストライク・ジグザグを投げました。まさか、吸殻を回収できるわけがないと思っていました。その行為はむしろ、釣りの神様に向けたジェスチャーのようなものだったのです。ところがなんと、私のジグザグは奇跡的に吸殻をキャッチして、戻ってきたのです。吸殻をしっかりと口にくわえていました。私は、投げたものをくわえて戻ってきた愛犬であるかのように、ジグザグをなでてあげました。）
