About this blog (このブログのこと)

My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 419) Consecutively No Fish in front of Ice Plant and at Edabo in Etomo Harbor

I have been to Etomo Harbor every day since the last post. A total of 3 attempts at catching a huge fluke at the bottom of the harbor resulted in two lost lures and no fish. The sea outside the harbor had been generally rough, and the strong wind had been blowing. So I expected I might catch a Japanese sea bass in addition to a fluke, but nothing happened not only at the bottom but also below the surface.

(No. 418) No Fish in front of Ice Plant and at Edabo in Etomo Harbor

A few bait fishermen at Etomo Harbor have told me the story of a huge fluke that they hooked unintentionally. They said they were fishing for the Aji fish (Japanese horse mackerel) at the inside of the harbor, and a huge fluke occasionally bit the Aji that was just hooked and still in the water. I have been intrigued. I myself had seen a huge one about two years ago. So I took out a few of heavy spoons this morning and let the metal lure to sink to the bottom at the inside of the harbor. I remembered I had loved bottom fishing in New York. Over there I primarily used Tsunami Ball Jigs for flukes and sea robins. While American fishermen didn’t appreciate sea robins, we Japanese loved them. I have not done bottom fishing very much since I came home. I did not catch any bottom-dwelling fish this morning, but I felt like doing it more often than before.

(No. 417) Seaweed at Saruwatari in Nonami

I have been a “non-fisherman” for such a long time that I might have lost the ability to tell whether it is a fish or an inanimate object such as dead seaweed. I know I should not whine. I should be grateful to the seaweed. Thank you, my seaweed! You made me very happy when my lure got tangled up in you in the distance! My excitement lasted embarrassingly much longer than it should have lasted!

(No. 416) No Fish at Sanami Harbor, Mitsu Harbor, and Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

The sea outside a harbor was rough and the wave height was forecasted to be about 3 meters (about 10 feet) this morning. So I expected to catch a Japanese sea bass or a young Japanese Spanish mackerel inside a harbor. With a set of lighter fishing tackle than the one for yellowtail amberjacks, I did the run-and-gun style fishing at each harbor. I did it not only at a harbor but also across the region. First I tried Sanami Harbor. Then I drove to Mitsu Harbor. Lastly I tried Nanbo in Etomo Harbor. As a “non-fisherman” that is probably one and only in the world for now, I enjoyed today’s non-fishing very much.

(No. 415) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

I have been skunked for a long time. At the end of the day, fishing might not be the thing for me. Recently I have wondered whether I should change my hobby. To be exact, I should change the name of my hobby. How about “non-fishing?” Or “un-fishing?” From now on, when I introduce myself, I will say, “Hi. My hobby is non-fishing and I love it!”

(No. 414) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

The rain had almost stopped by this afternoon, and the height of waves should have been about 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) according to the weatherman. However, the waves looked much higher when I reached a place to overlook Susumi Bay in Owashi. I had planned to go to Saruwatari or Naka-bana, but I had to change my destination. I drove to Nanbo in Etomo Harbor, a much safer place than the two spots in Nonami. There were 4 bait fishermen at Nanbo when I arrived. Two of them said they did not catch any fish. Neither did I.

(No. 413) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay

Due to an important business trip to Tokyo and a few tight deadlines, I had not been able to go fishing for some time. Finally I became free from all the urgent obligations today. I became able to go fishing at last. The problem was that the weather had been nasty since this morning. The weather app on my phone said it would keep raining in Matsue, but actually It became fine at one point this afternoon. I drove to Kurauchi Bay, one of the nearest fishing spots along the shore of the Shimane Peninsula from my place. When I arrived at the spot about 4 p.m., the sky already became overcast. Before it began to rain, I managed to make 7 or 8 casts. You might think I must have felt disappointed. I didn’t. I appreciated each one of the casts satisfactorily.

(No. 412) No Fish at Naka-bana in Nonami

I feel like saying “thank you” to the god (or spirit) of fishing. It was about 7:40 a.m. that I arrived at the parking space for Saruwatari in Nonami after I did some household chores this morning. There was a car left at the space! Believing this fisherman had gone to Saruwatari, I took another path in the woods. This path leads to Naka-bana, a less popular fishing spot to the west of Saruwatari. It would be the first time I had tried this fishing spot. Saruwatari is supposed to be more productive, so I cannot help it whenever it is available. Today I did not catch any fish from Naka-bana, and the fisherman whom I saw casting his lures not from Saruwatari but from one of safer rocks around it seemed out of luck too at least after I reached Naka-bana, but I felt happy.

(No. 411) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

I am becoming a lazy fisherman. I might have to change the name of this blog to “American Saltwater Lures Can Catch Japanese Fish Without Waking Up Very Early?” I had not even set my alarm for today’s fishing. When I woke up about 6:30 a.m. after having a very good sleep, the day has already broken. I was headed for Maruiwa in Owashi. There were 2 cars already parked at the narrow parking space for the fishing spot. I had no choice but to go to Saruwatari in Nonami. Why did it seem that nobody except me was interested in the so-called most popular fishing spot in the area? Anyway I started fishing before 8 a.m. at Saruwatari and finished it about 10 a.m. The sea was very quiet and calm. I got skunked again. Nothing happened. I just noticed that nori (black tasty seaweed) was growing on the rock along the shore.

(No. 410) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

It was as if I had been destined by the god (or spirit) of fishing only to go to Saruwatari in Nonami. As is often the case these days, there was no vacancy in parking spaces for fishing spots in the area except the one for Saruwatari. I started fishing at 8 a.m. and stopped it at 9:30 a.m. Literally nothing happened. I got bored, so that I took a picture of a lure hanging from a tree with the unproductive sea in the background.

(No. 409) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi

I am sure that I love the act of fishing even when I don’t catch any fish. Just casting my favorite lures toward the ocean makes me happy. Just being at a fishing spot is kind of fulfilling. However, I am not sure of it when I get soaked by the waves. That’s what happened to me at Maruiwa in Owashi this morning. The high waves broke against the shore, and I could not avoid it. The water was so cold that I had to quit fishing much sooner than I had expected.

(No. 408) Still Skunked at Saruwatari in Nonami

The strangeness continued. I was unable to find a vacant fishing spot in Owashi and Nonami except for Saruwatari again. When I arrived at the spot about 8 a.m., a lot of seaweeds and some pieces of garbage floated on the water in front of it and, worst of all, they stayed. Obviously it was a bad sign for fishing. I had to cast and retrieve my lures carefully in order to avoid them. The seaweeds and garbage started to move very slowly about 10 a.m. With a slightly elevated expectation, I kept casting my lures by about 11 a.m., but I got skunked again.

(No. 407) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

Saruwatari has not been very productive for me this year. So today I wanted to fish from Maruiwa in Owashi, but three cars were already parked in the narrow parking space for the fishing spot when I arrived in the early morning. I gave up Maruiwa and drove to Saruwatari. I felt ambivalent. I might have hoped that I would find a car at the parking space for it. I probably said to myself, “Please don’t let me fish from Saruwatari today.” When I arrived, there was no car at the parking space. Today I had taken out two of the most universally effective lures from my arsenal, which are the Super Strike Zig Zag and Little Neck Popper. Even with these lures, I did not catch any fish. Why?

(No. 406) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

The strong wind was blowing and the sea was choppy when I started fishing about 6:20 a.m. The condition of the sea looked similar to the one when I hooked but eventually missed a big fish 4 days ago. I shook my rod hard to move my American pencil popper livelily. Unlike 4 days ago, no fish got interested in the splash the lure made. I got bored and also a bit tired. So I took more breaks than I usually do. During the breaks I practiced a new song I am writing now for my annual New Year's rap, using a Philips portable bluetooth speaker. In addition, on my way back to the parking space, I found what looked like feces of an animal in the woods. I was not bored anymore.

(No. 405) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

Saruwatari is the most popular fishing spot in Nonami according to the very useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook,” and the capacity of the spot is just one fisherman. I had occupied the spot for two consecutive mornings. I don’t like to have anything all to myself. So today I intended to avoid Saruwatari all the more because somebody had cleared the path to the fishing spot as I mentioned in my previous post (No. 396). However, other fishing spots that I knew in the area were all occupied this morning. So I had no choice but to drive to Saruwatari. Surprisingly there was no car at the parking space for the spot. The sea was much calmer than the previous two mornings. It was too quiet, and nothing exciting happened. If I prevented you from trying Saruwatari this morning due to my parked car, I am sorry.

(No. 404) Exciting Splash at Saruwatari in Nonami

The feeling of the ferocious run of the fish I missed yesterday has not left me. So I revisited Saruwatari this morning and started fishing about 6:30 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than yesterday. Not until about 7 a.m., the same time when the strike happened yesterday, did the fish respond to my lure. When I was using the Guppy Lure’s 3-1/4 oz. Pencil Popper, I saw one fish chasing it. Making a white zigzag splash around the lure, the fish attacked it a few times. It was such a thrilling moment, but the fish did not even graze the lure! Except for this event, nothing happened today.

(No. 403) Missed Big Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

I started casting my lures slightly before 7 a.m. at Saruwatari today. The rain had just stopped and the sky was leaden with overcast. The waves were not high, and there was a light swell. I felt I would catch a nice one at last today. First I used my Roberts Ranger. After making a few casts, I switched it to the Guppy Lure’s Jobo Junior (2.75 oz.). The pencil popper reached so far that I couldn’t recognize it when I started moving it the way American surf fishermen do. It did not matter. At the third or the forth shake of my rod, a big fish snatched the lure and dashed toward the bottom of the sea.
The fish was so powerful that the drag of my old reel (Ohmori Factory’s Diamond Micro 7 No.6) started screeching. When I tried to stop the ferocious run of the fish, the tension I had felt through the line was gone. The knot between the leader line and the clip was broken. Unfortunately the fish was gone probably with the lure dangling around the mouth. I hoped the fish shook off the lure and felt safe thanks to the barbless hooks. The fish was almost certainly a big yellowtail amberjack. Because I had caught only Japanese sea bass on any of American pencil poppers since I came back to Japan, I had been skeptical of the lures’ ability to catch amberjacks. Now I am confident.

(No. 402) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay

My current translation assignment will be over within 24 hours. In other words, the deadline for the job is tomorrow. I have been revising my translation since this morning with such concentration that my brain got completely tired by this late afternoon. In order to revive my concentration for closing the assignment, I had to do something different from English translation. So I drove to Kurauchi Bay with a few of my favorite lures. Some nice patches of sarashi (white churning water) were formed in the bay. I got fully satisfied with only several casts. I found one guy looking down at the fishing spot from the upper part of the rocky shore. He told me that he recently started fishing for Japanese sea bass along the rocky shore. He seemed to have some experience in catching the fish in Lake Shinji but not much along the rocky shore of Shimane Peninsula. I was happy to give him some advice.

How Not to Lose Carbide Spikes of Korkers Rocktrax

This irregular post may interest few Japanese fishermen, but anyway I post it. I have used Korkers Rocktrax, a cleated overshoes, and I love it. It is a must for a fisherman like me. I like to swim at the rocky shore of Shimane Peninsula in the summer and I cannot do it without the overshoes on my sandals. I attach them to my rubber boots in the winter. The only problem for me is that the carbide spikes inserted into the soles easily come out. I had tried to secure the spikes in various ways but failed. Recently I found a satisfying method to do it.

This photo shows my Rocktrax attached to my rubber boots. I recommend that the tip of a rubber boot should be reinforced with a metal plate. Otherwise, the tip may move elastically and stick out from the side of the overshoe especially when you walk on a bumpy slope.

The red circle in the above photo shows the original state of a spike inserted into the sole. The green circle shows a worn-out hole after the spike was gone. You can insert a new spike to this hole, but the spike becomes wobbly and will be gone soon.

This photo shows the carbide spikes and an 1-mm-thick elastomer sheet. First, cut the sheet and make 1 to 3 patches of elastomer. Then, punch a hole through the patches and attach them to the waist of a spike.

Push the spike into the worn-out hole with an appropriate tool, and glue the elastomer patches together and onto the sole with superglue. The inserted spike is secured now. This may not be a perfect solution, but the number of lost spikes is drastically decreased in my case.
