(No. 604) No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なし)

It is another effect of the coronavirus crisis. I have not yet talked with any of the regular lure fishermen this year that usually appear at the shore of Lake Shinji at this time of the year. So I don’t know whether the so-called “Konoshiro-pattern” has begun or not. Maybe not? Because some of my American lures that have proven effective in catching big Japanese sea bass have remained silent. So I don’t have much to talk about for fishing. Instead, I want to talk about two other things. First. Be careful about rocks along the shore of the lake. They become extremely slippery when wet. Yesterday I saw a little girl slip over a wet rock and almost fall into the water. It frightened me to death. Second. This is a direct message to a person who throw away cigarette butts at the shore. Please don’t do it. Someone like me has to pick them up for you. You might not be able to understand anything due to the lack of intelligence, but at least you can try.

(No. 603) Invention of Revolutionary X-Reeling Method (革命的なＸ巻きメソッドの発明)

Since I achieved the “double-handlization” of a spinning reel in 2017, I have used the double-handled PENN Torque 5 for more than 3 years. A double-handled reel with one handle each attached to the right and left sides of its body is beneficial especially for an ambidextrous caster like me. In addition, I love using a pencil popper with the American fishermen’s method. With the method, you have to shake your rod continuously with either of your arms, so the burdened arm might be tired soon. Thanks to the double-handled reel, I have been able to use both my arms in turn. My arms would not be tired, so I could keep using the pencil popper longer than a normal fisherman would do. Clearly, the double-handled spinning reel has some advantages over any single-handled reel, but there is also a disadvantage; it is heavier.

Today, at Saruwatari in Nonami, I came up with a perfect solution for this unavoidable disadvantage. With this new solution, you don’t have to use a double-handled reel anymore. You can go back to a normal single-handled reel. Still, you remain able to use both your arms to shake your rod in turn. It is a simple solution. If either of your arms gets tired from shaking your rod, you will cross your arms in front of your belly as if you created a letter X and exchange the roles of your arms. That’s it. I call this solution “X-Reeling Method.” Thanks to this revolutionary method, I kept maneuvering the American pencil popper this morning as long as when I used the double-handled reel. No fish wanted to celebrate the invention, though.

（今日、野波の猿渡において私は、この不可避な問題に対する完璧な解決策を思いつきました。この解決策を用いれば、ダブルハンドル・リールを使う必要はもうないのです。シングルハンドルの、つまり通常のリールに戻ることができます。その上でなお、両腕を交互に使って、竿を揺することが可能なのです。簡単な解決策です。竿を揺すっていた腕が疲れたら、腹の前で両腕を交差させて「Ｘ」という文字を作り、両腕の役割を入れ替えます。それだけです。私はこの解決策を「Ｘ巻きメソッド」と命名しました。この革命的なメソッドのおかげで、今朝は、ダブルハンドル・リール使用時と変わらないほど長く、アメリカのペンシル・ポッパーを動かし続けることができました。とはいえ魚たちには、この発明を祝う気持ちはなかったのでした。）

(No. 602) Scorpion Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami and Japanese Badger (野波の猿渡にてカサゴ、そしてニホンアナグマ)

I started fishing about 6 a.m. today. Hoping to catch a big amberjack, I kept casting topwater lures, such as the Roberts Whistler and Guppy Lure’s Jobo Junior, until 7:30 a.m. when I got tired of not receiving any response from fish. Then, I changed my target from a big amberjack to any bottom-dwelling fish. I took out my Hopkins Smoothie Shorty and let it sink to the bottom of the sea. Soon I felt a sharp bite from a fish. It was a scorpion fish. In addition to it, there was another encounter with an animal this morning. On my way back to my home, I saw a Japanese badger running on a shoulder of the seaside road. One fish and one small mammal in a day. What a good day!

（今日は午前６時頃に釣り始めました。大きな青物を狙い、ロバーツのホイッスラーやグッピールアーのジョボ・ジュニアのようなトップウォーター・ルアーを、午前７時半、魚からの反応が全くないことに飽き飽きしてしまうまで、投げ続けました。それから私は、対象魚を、大きな青物から、底生の魚に変えました。ホプキンス・スムーズィー・ショーティーを取り出して、海底まで沈めたのです。すぐに魚からの鋭いバイトがありました。カサゴでした。この魚に加えて、今朝はもう一つ、動物との出会いがありました。帰宅途中、海岸沿いの道の路肩を、ニホンアナグマが走っていたのです。１日のうちに魚１尾と小さな哺乳類１匹。なんて良い日なのでしょう！）

(No. 601) Consecutively No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて引き続き釣果なし)

I felt as if I were repeating the same morning as yesterday. It was like “Groundhog Day,” a 1993 American film starring Bill Murray. I cruised on the seaside road around 6 a.m. this morning as I had done yesterday, and all the fishing spots of easier access seemed already occupied or crowded. Only Saruwatari in Nonami was an exception. The sea around Saruwatari was empty, the same as yesterday, too.
（まるで昨日の朝をそのまま繰り返しているようでした。ビル・マーレイ主演の1993年のアメリカ映画『恋はデジャ・ブ』のようでした。私は、昨日と同様、今日も午前６時頃に海岸沿いの道を運転したのですが、比較的容易に行ける釣り場は、どこも既に先客がいるか、あるいは混んでいるようでした。野波の猿渡だけが例外でした。猿渡周辺の海も、昨日と同様、空っぽでした。）

(No. 600) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

Today is Saturday. I expected more fishermen than weekdays to be at fishing spots along the rocky shore of the Shimane Peninsula. I suppose most of them are able to go fishing only weekends. So I thought I could be happy only if I found any available vacant fishing spot. In other words, I did not necessarily want to go to Saruwatari this morning. As I had expected, all the fishing spots I checked were already taken or crowded when I cruised on the seaside road around 6 a.m. I might have been a bit too late. However, somehow Saruwatari was an exception. The parking space for the spot was empty when I arrived about 6:30 a.m. Unfortunately, the sea around Saruwatari seemed also empty.

（ 今日は土曜日です。島根半島の磯沿いの釣り場には、平日以上の数の釣り人が現れるだろうと考えました。その多くは、週末にしか釣りに行くことができない皆さんではないかと思います。なので私は、どこかに空いている釣り場が１つでも見つかれば、それだけでめっけものだと考えていたのです。言い換えると、必ずしも猿渡に行きたいわけではなかったのです。予測していた通り、午前６時頃に海岸沿いの道を運転しつつチェックしてみると、釣り場はすべて、既に先客がいるか、あるいは混んでいました。私は少し遅すぎたのかもしれません。しかし、なぜか猿渡だけは例外だったのです。そこへ行くための駐車スペースに６時半頃に到着してみると、からっぽでした。あいにく、猿渡周辺の海もまた、からっぽのようでした。）

(No. 599) No Fish at Foggy Lake Shinji (霧深き宍道湖にて釣果なし)

The fog was very dense this morning. In addition, it was completely windless at the shore of Lake Shinji. All that I could see was the dense whiteness. All that I could hear was the distant growl from an engine of fishing boat collecting Shijimi mussels. I felt as if I were a lost man who strayed into a fantasy land.
（ 今朝は、霧がとても濃かったのでした。加えて、宍道湖岸は完全に無風でした。私に見えるものと言えば、濃い白さだけでした。私に聞こえるものと言えば、シジミを採っている漁船のエンジンが発する遠いうなり声だけでした。私は、まるで幻想の土地に迷い込んでしまった男のように感じました。）

(No. 598) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

The strong crosswind was blowing at Saruwatari in Nonami this morning. It was not a very favorable condition for using an American pencil popper because the wind affected the fishing line in the air too much and made it difficult to maneuver that type of topwater lure. So I mostly used Roberts Whistler and Ranger, another type of topwater lure. The crosswind could hardly affect them. In addition, the choppy surface due to the wind made the movement of the lures look more enticing (at least from a human’s viewpoint). I kept casting them tenaciously, but  I remained a “non-fisherman.”

（今朝、野波の猿渡では、強い横風が吹いていました。アメリカのペンシル・ポッパーを使う上では、あまり好ましい条件ではありません。なぜなら、空中の釣り糸が影響を受けすぎて、この種のトップウォーター・ルアーは動かすことが難しくなるからです。そこで私は主に、ロバーツのホイッスラーとレンジャーという、別種のトップウォーター・ルアーを使いました。これらのルアーには横風はほとんで影響しないのです。加えて、風のせいで水面が波立ち、これらの動きをより魅力的に見せていました（少なくとも人間の観点からは）。粘り強くこれらを投げ続けた私でしたが、ずっと「無魚釣り師」のままでした。）

(No. 597) No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なし)

Today I visited Lake Shinji twice, early morning and early afternoon. When I was using the Guppy Lure’s 2 oz. Mini, one of my American pencil poppers, with my PENN Torque 5 spinning reel in the morning, I saw a fish turning around underwater just behind the lure and leaving a ripple on the surface. When I was using the Roberts Whistler or Bounder with my PENN Jigmaster 500 conventional reel in the afternoon, I expected a fish to attack either of the topwater lures, but nothing happened.

（今日は、早朝と午後早くの２回、宍道湖を訪れました。朝、PENNのトルク５スピニングリールで、グッピールアーの２オンス・ミニというアメリカのペンシル・ポッパーを使っていると、ルアーのすぐ後ろの水中で魚が身をひるがえし、水面に波紋を残すのが見えました。午後は、PENNのジグマスター500という両軸リールで、ロバーツ・ホイッスラーあるいはバウンダーを使いながら、これらトップウォーター・ルアーのどちらかを魚が襲うのではないかと期待しましたが、何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 596) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

This morning the water around Saruwatari was calm in general except for one short period of time, like 10 to 15 minutes, during which a series of strong swells hit the rocky shore. It was a rather sudden change in the condition of the sea. Such a change could be a harbinger of a good catch. My anticipation rose, and my concentration sharpened up. I got ready for a strike from a big fish, but nothing happened.

（今朝、猿渡周辺の海は総じて穏やかだったのですが、10分から15分くらいの短時間、強いうねりが連続して磯に押し寄せてきた時がありました。海の状況が、かなり突然、変化したのでした。そうした変化が良い釣果の前兆となる場合があります。私の期待は高まり、集中力は研ぎ澄まされました。私は大型魚の攻撃に備えましたが、何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 595) Two Beautiful Swans Dipping Their Heads Underwater at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて水中に頭を突っ込む二羽の美しい白鳥)

This post is not about fishing. When I was walking on the bank along the shore of Lake Shinji this morning, I saw two beautiful swans dipping their heads underwater and feeding some green water weeds. Apparently, they did not mind my presence and the fleet of fishing boats collecting Shijimi mussels. The birds were so elegant that I shot the video of them, too.

（この投稿は、釣りには関係ありません。今朝、宍道湖岸の土手を歩いていた時、水中に頭を入れて緑の水草を食べている二羽の美しい白鳥を見たのです。私の存在や、シジミを採っている漁船団のことは、どうやら気にならないようです。鳥たちはとても優雅だったので、私はビデオも撮影しました。）

(No. 594) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

“Jishuku” is a Japanese word that means exercising self-restraint on your activities. Now Jishuku is getting relaxed slowly and carefully in some regions across Japan. I have already lifted one of my Jishukus, the restraint on using a ‘hooked’ lure. This morning I relaxed another one and went to Saruwatari in Nonami. I had refrained from going to a beautiful fishing spot at the rocky shore of the Shimane Peninsula. Although no fish responded to either of my two lures that I took out today, Hopkins No=Eql and Roberts Whistler, I felt refreshed immensely at windy Saruwatari. Later today I got back to the area with a handsaw and a pair of shears. The path leading to Saruwatari was overgrown, and I had to cut some exuberant weeds and twigs

（「自粛」とは、自分の活動に自分で制限を課すことを意味する日本語です。今、日本のいくつかの地域では、この自粛がゆっくりと注意深く、緩和されつつあります。私は、自分の自粛の一つ、“針有り”ルアーを使わないという制限を、既に緩和しました。今朝は、もう一つ別の自粛を緩和して、野波の猿渡へ行きました。これまで、島根半島の磯にある美しい釣り場へ行くのを控えていたのです。今日持ち出した２つのルアー、ホプキンス No=Eqlとロバーツ・ホイッスラーのどちらにも魚からの反応はありませんでしたが、風の強い猿渡で、私は大いにリフレッシュできました。今日はその後、草刈りハサミとノコギリを携えて、この場所へ戻りました。猿渡へと続く小道が雑草と小枝で覆われており、勢いよく茂るそれらを刈る必要があったのです。）

(No. 593) Goodbye, My Hookless Fishing (さよなら、私の無針釣り)

The so-called ‘Golden Week’ holidays ended 3 days ago. All regions in Japan are still under the state of emergency, but some local governments relaxed antivirus restrictions that they had asked the citizens to apply to themselves. In line with this development, I lifted my own restriction: hookless fishing. I had not wanted to catch a fish especially during the ‘Golden Week’ because I was afraid that the catch could look tempting on this blog. The ‘Golden Week’ was over, and I felt allowed to catch a fish. So this morning I went to Lake Shinji with two ‘hooked’ lures. I said to myself, “Goodbye, my hookless fishing.” Sadly, I was not able to catch a fish even using a ‘hooked’ lure. (No. 592) Hookless Fishing: Birth of New Exciting Fishing Style (無針釣り：エキサイティングな新しい釣りスタイルの誕生)

After I posted my last article, I said to myself, “Did I just invent a new fishing style as a by-product of the coronavirus crisis?” Please don’t ask me the causal relationship between the ongoing once-in-a-century pandemic and this newly invented fishing style. There should have been a clear logic behind the relationship, and I even explained it in one of my earlier posts, but now it feels blurry. Anyway, I am excited with this new invention. As you may know, there were some periods during which I was a “non-fisherman” as I am now. Non-fishermen are defined as those who practice the “non-fishing.” Non-fishermen are those who don’t catch fish but are as satisfied with the result as when they catch fish. Non-fishermen are those who have a gift for loving their fishing unshakably even when they have been skunked for an extremely long time. As an advanced form of this “non-fishing,” I decide to call the new style “hookless fishing.” Probably I am the world’s first “hookless fisherman.” Does anybody want to be the second?
（前回の記事を投稿した後、私は自分に問いました。「もしかして俺、コロナ危機の副産物として、新しい釣りのスタイルを発明しちゃったのかな？」。現在進行中の100年に１度レベルの世界的感染爆発と、この新しく発明された釣りのスタイルとの因果関係については、どうか問わないでください。両者の関係の背後には明快な論理があったはずですし、以前の投稿で私はそれを説明さえしているのですが、今はぼやけています。ともかく私は、この新発明に興奮しているのです。おそらくご存知だと思いますが、かつて私には「無魚釣り師」であった時期が何度かありました。今もまたそうです。無魚釣り師とは「無魚釣り」を実践する人のことを指します。無魚釣り師には魚が釣れないのですが、たとえ魚が釣れなくても、魚が釣れた時と同様に満足しています。無魚釣り師には才能があり、異常なほど長い間ボウズが続いている時でも、微動だにせず、自分の釣りを愛せるのです。この「無魚釣り」の進化形として、私は新しいスタイルを「無針釣り」と呼ぶことにしました。たぶん私は、世界で初めての「無針釣り師」でしょう。誰か２人目になりたい人はいますか？）

(No. 591) Mission: Impossible - Catch Fish on Hookless Lure (ミッション：インポッシブル - 針なしルアーで魚を釣れ)

Now people in Japan are supposed to exercise some self-restraint on their activities for the purpose of tackling the coronavirus crisis. It is called “Jishuku” in Japanese. In line with this trend, I stopped using a lure with hooks. I can say I am exercising self-restraint on using a lure in a normal way. I believed the justification for my Jishuku was proper, but now I am getting more and more unsure. Anyway, since I started this strange Jishuku I have wondered if it is possible to catch a fish on a hookless lure.
（今、日本では、コロナウイルス危機に立ち向かうため、何らかの制限を自分の活動に課すことが期待されています。これは日本語で「自粛」と呼ばれます。この趨勢に歩調を合わせ、私は、針のついたルアーを使うのをやめています。通常の方法でルアーを使うことを控えているわけです。自分のこの自粛には真っ当な根拠があると信じていた私ですが、だんだん、その確信が薄れてきています。ともかく、この奇妙な自粛を開始して以来、私は、針のないルアーで魚を釣ることはできるのかと、考えてきました。）
I came up with two scenarios: (1) You are an extremely good fisherman with sufficient skills to make the fish believe your lure is not a lure but a real delicious food from the beginning to the end, or (2) The fish keeps chasing your lure to the shore and bites it exactly when you pull it out of the water, and the fish is too excited to recognize it still holds the lure in its mouth when being landed. Has anyone ever done this great achievement in history? There must be very few, if any. Shall I pursue this Mission: Impossible as Tom Cruise does?
（そして２つのシナリオを思い浮かべたのです：（１）もしも釣り人が極めて優秀であり、十分な技術があれば、魚をだまして、そのルアーは実はルアーではなく本物の美味しい食べ物であると、最初から最後まで魚に信じ込ませることができる。あるいは（２）岸辺までルアーを追いかけてきた魚が、釣り人が水面からルアーを引き上げるのと同時にルアーに噛みつき、とても興奮しているので、陸に上げられた時もまだ自分がルアーをくわえていることに気づかない。歴史上、この偉業を達成した釣り人はいるのでしょうか？　いたとしても、極めて少数でしょう。私は、このミッション：インポッシブルを追求すべきでしょうか、トム・クルーズのように？）

(No. 590) Elegant Swan at Lake Shinji (宍道湖の優雅な白鳥)

In my last post I said I was planning to write about my impression on American lures. I have not yet decided which one of them I should write about first. To be honest, I feel that I might not be good at writing about each of my lures. Each of them is special in its own way, and I love all of them. They are lovable. Yes, they are lovable, and probably that’s it. That’s my impression. I understand it’s too general, but I don’t feel I need to elaborate it more. So I am not sure whether I will do it. On the other hand, I am sure I will keep going to Lake Shinji in order to do casting practice with a hookless lure. I have exercised self-restraint on using a normal lure. Today I took a picture of a swan again, one of the pair that had come to Lake Shinji several days ago.

（前回の投稿で私は、アメリカのルアーについての印象を書いていくことを検討中だと言いました。しかし、どのルアーを最初に取り上げるべきか、まだ決めていません。正直に言うと、一つ一つのルアーについて上手く書くことなんて出来ないのではないかと感じているのです。どのルアーもそれぞれなりに特別であり、私はどれも好きなのです。彼らは愛すべき存在です。そう、彼らは愛すべき存在であり、おそらくそれに尽きるのです。それが私の印象です。大雑把すぎると承知してはいますが、それ以上、詳しく語る必要も感じられません。なので、私が本当にそれをするか不確かです。一方、針のないルアーでキャスティング練習をするため、宍道湖に通い続けることは確かです。私は普通のルアーを使うことを自粛しているわけです。今日は、数日前に宍道湖にやって来た白鳥のつがいの一羽を、再び、写真に撮りました。）
