(No. 1025) My Current Favorite Tackle and Two Bites at Saruwatari in Nonami (現在のお気に入りのタックルと、野波の猿渡にて２回のバイト)

As shown in the above photos, I attached a rod guide to the rod clamp of my Newell G447-F reel in order to make it a trigger grip. This makes it easier to cast lures than before. For a conventional reel without the level wind feature, such as the PENN Jigmaster and my Newell G447-F, I like to use a spinning rod. It is because diameters of rod guides are much larger than those of a rod for a low-profile baitcaster or a conventional reel. When using a conventional reel without the level wind feature, you have to use your fingers to wind the line evenly. However, if you know how to take advantage of the wider rod guides of a spinning rod, you don’t always need to use your fingers.

Now my Newell G447-F reel and Gamakatsu Pop Shaft 83 rod (a spinning rod) are my favorite combination. Indeed, Shimano Scorpion MD is an excellent reel, but sometimes I feel it is too excellent. It doesn't take much technique to use that reel. It was as if I were comfortable on a self-driving car. On the other hand, Newell G447-F feels like an old stick-shift car. You need some technique. With the current favorite tackle, I was standing at Saruwatari in Nonami this morning. There were bites on the Hopkins No=Eql. I saw the fish biting it twice, but it didn’t get hooked.

(No. 1024) U.S.-Japan Lure Battle at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて日米ルアー決戦)

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is about to begin. This is a report on another similarly international and competitive battle that began this morning at Safuki-bana in Nonami. Because there were multiple cars already at the parking space for Saruwatari, going to Safuki-bana was the only option left for me. There was another car at the Safuki-bana parking space too, but I didn’t mind and started trekking down toward Safuki-bana. The car was T-san's. He is one of my fishing buddies, whom I occasionally see in Nonami. As soon as I reached Safuki-bana, I challenged T-san to a Japan-U.S. lure duel. He said his lures were only Japanese. Mine were American, of course. Before the battle began, I showed him how to go beyond Safuki-bana. In order to do so, the sea has to be calm enough and you need some athleticism. The battle kicked off about 7:30 a.m. T-san was standing at Safuki-bana, and I was at a spot beyond it. We fought fiercely until about 8:30 a.m. Our battle ended in a draw. Please don’t ask the score.

（2022年FIFAワールドカップが始まろうとしています。本稿は、今朝、野波のサフキ鼻で始まった、同じように国際的で拮抗した戦いについての報告です。猿渡の駐車場にはすでに複数の車が駐められていたので、サフキ鼻に行くしか選択肢は残っていませんでした。サフキ鼻の駐車場にも車が一台あったのですが、私は気にせず、サフキ鼻に向かう小道を降り始めました。その車はＴさんのものだったのです。彼は、野波で時々出会う釣り友達の一人です。サフキ鼻に着くや否や、私はＴさんに日米ルアー対決を挑みました。彼は自分のルアーは日本製だと言いました。私のルアーは当然、アメリカンです。戦いの火蓋が切って落とされる前に、Ｔさんにサフキ鼻の先に行く方法を教えてあげました。そうするためには、海が十分に穏やかでなければならず、また、ある程度の運動能力も必要です。Ｔさんはサフキ鼻に立ち、私はその先の場所に立ちました。我々は、８時半頃まで激闘を繰り広げましたが、結局、引き分けに終わりました。スコアは尋ねないでください。）

(No. 1023) Newell G447-F vs. Scorpion MD at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にてニューウェルG447-F 対 スコーピオンMD)

I brought my two favorite reels to Saruwatari today, Newell G447-F and Shimano Scorpion MD 300. In case the yellowtail amberjack or any other predatory fish were not around Saruwatari, I planned to enjoy myself comparing those two reels. Regardless of the originally intended applications of those reels, I used both of them for the same, one and only application: casting American topwater lures from a rocky shore. Both worked fine, but probably I enjoyed more with the Newell G447-F than with the Scorpion MD. Compared to the Newell reel, the Shimano reel is a more modern reel, and naturally it is easier to throw lures with. On the other hand, you have to learn some techniques if you want to throw a lure with the Newell. Probably that’s the reason why I enjoyed more.

（今日の猿渡には、ニューウェルG447-Fとシマノ・スコーピオンMD300という愛用のリール２台を持参しました。万が一、ヒラマサや他の捕食魚がいなかった場合に備えて、この２つのリールを比較して楽しむつもりでした。リール本来の用途は無視して、どちらのリールも、アメリカン・トップウォーター・ルアーを磯から投げるという唯一無二の用途に使いました。どちらのリールも良かったのですが、おそらく、スコーピオンMDよりもニューウェルG447-Fのほうが、より楽しめたのではないかと思います。スコーピオンMDは、ニューウェルに比べて、よりモダンなリールですから、当然ルアーも投げやすくなっています。一方、ニューウェルのリールでルアーを投げようと思うと、それなりのテクニックを身につけなければいけません。それが、より楽しめた理由かもしれません。）

(No. 1022) Unexpected Bite and Incredible Feat at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて意外なバイトと信じがたい偉業)

The weather forecast said that the sea was getting rough and the rain would start falling soon. So I decided to go to neither Safuki-bana nor Saruwatari in Nonami, both of which are serious fishing spots. I instead went to Kurauchi Bay this morning, which is a more casual fishing spot. A few surprises waited for me there. First I was surprised to see a lot of cigarette butts left there with a beer can and some plastic packages for fishing tackle. I decided to pick them up later and started throwing my lures anyway. I had expected to see a choppy rough water inside the bay and wondered I might catch a Japanese sea bass there, but actually the water was very calm. It was a bit disappointment.

（天気予報によると、海は荒れつつあり、また、じきに雨が降り出すとのことでした。そこで私は、本格的な釣り場である野波のサフキ鼻や猿渡に行くのはやめることにしました。代わりに今朝は、もっと気軽な釣り場である倉内湾に行きました。そこではいくつかの驚きが私を待っていました。まず驚いたのは、タバコの吸殻が、缶ビールや釣具のプラスチック・パッケージと一緒に、たくさん放置されていたことです。私は、後で拾おうと思い、とりあえずルアーを投げ始めました。きっと湾の中は波立っていてスズキが釣れるのではないかと想定していましたが、実際には海はとても穏やかでした。ちょっと残念でした。）

When I was regretting not having gone to either Safuki-bana or Saruwatari, one fish attacked my Atom Atomizer twice in succession. Though the fish was not hooked, I got pleasantly surprised. Then I found one of cigarette butts floating on the surface. The wind must have blown it away, and I regretted not having cleaned up the litter as soon as I found them. I threw the Super Strike Zig Zag, one of my favorite lures, at the floating cigarette butt. I didn’t think I was able to catch it. It was more like a gesture intended for the deity of fishing. However, to my surprise, my Zig Zag miraculously caught the cigarette butt and brought it to me. The lure held it firmly in its mouse. I patted my Zig Zag as if it had been my lovely dog with which I had played fetch.

（サフキ鼻や猿渡に行かなかったことを悔やんでいた時、１匹の魚が２回続けてアトム・アトマイザーに襲いかかりました。魚は針にかかりませんでしたが、私は嬉しい驚きを感じました。その時、水面にタバコの吸殻が浮いているのを見つけたのです。風で飛ばされたのでしょう。ゴミを見つけた時にすぐに拾わなかったことを、私は後悔しました。私はその浮いた吸殻に向かって、お気に入りのルアーの一つ、スーパーストライク・ジグザグを投げました。まさか、吸殻を回収できるわけがないと思っていました。その行為はむしろ、釣りの神様に向けたジェスチャーのようなものだったのです。ところがなんと、私のジグザグは奇跡的に吸殻をキャッチして、戻ってきたのです。吸殻をしっかりと口にくわえていました。私は、投げたものをくわえて戻ってきた愛犬であるかのように、ジグザグをなでてあげました。）

(No. 1021) No Fish at beyond Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻を越えたところにて釣果なし)

All fishing spots seemed occupied except Safuki-bana, and today was another “there is nothing” or “just a circuit training” day for me. The sea around Safuki-bana was much calmer than yesterday, so I was able to pass by the spot and go beyond it. There are neither baitfish nor predatory fish. There were only some boats on the surface.

（サフキ鼻以外の釣り場には全て先客がいるようでしたし、私にとっては今日もまた「何もない」あるいは「ただのサーキット・トレーニング」の日でした。サフキ鼻周辺の海は昨日よりずっと穏やかで、釣り場を通り過ぎて、その向こうまで行くことができました。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）も捕食魚もいません。海面にボートが数隻、浮かんでいるだけでした。）

(No. 1020) No Fish at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて釣果なし)

It was as if nothing had changed at all since yesterday, except for that today’s swells were, from the beginning, as strong as those when I had left the fishing spot yesterday. There were neither baitfish, predatory fish, nor boils on the surface. Nothing happened at all. Hmm. In order to catch the yellowtail amberjack, maybe I have to try fishing spots in Izumo City?

（まるで昨日から何も変わっていないようでした。今日のうねりは最初から、昨日、釣り場を離れたときと同じ強さだったことを除けば。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）も、捕食魚も、そして水面上のナブラもありません。まったく何も起きません。うーん。ヒラマサを釣るには、出雲市の釣り場に行ってみないとダメでしょうか？）

(No. 1019) No Fish at beyond Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻を越えたところにて釣果なし)

Because Saruwatari had already been taken this morning, I went to Safuki-bana with a canned coffee as an offering to be given to the small jizo (a stone statue in the form of a Buddhist monk). The sea was calm, so I was able to pass by Safuki-bana and went farther beyond the spot described as “Safuki-bana" in the “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook.” As I mentioned earlier, only when the sea is calm can I do that. Unlike yesterday, there were no boils today. No baitfish, either. No fish responded to my lures. However, it was not that there was nothing thrilling. On my way back from that farther spot beyond Safuki-bana, I realized the swells had become much stronger. This made the return over the steep cliff to the Safuki-bana all the more dangerous and thrilling. I think I could say I enjoyed it.

（今朝は、すでに猿渡が取られていたので、小さなお地蔵さんにあげるお供え物の缶コーヒーを持って、サフキ鼻に行きました。海が穏やかだったので、サフキ鼻を通り過ぎて、『山陰の釣り場総覧』の中で「サフキ鼻」とされている場所の向こうまで行くことができました。前にも書きましたが、海が穏やかなときだけ、サフキ鼻を越えていくことができるのです。昨日と違い、今日はナブラが立ちませんでした。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）もいません。ルアーに魚が反応することも、ありません。しかし、スリリングなことがなかったわけではないのです。サフキ鼻を越えたその場所から戻る途中、うねりがかなり強くなっていることに気がつきました。そのため、険しい崖を越えてサフキ鼻に戻るのは、より危険でスリリングな行為になったのです。私はそれを楽しんだと言えると思います。）

(No. 1018) Teased by Boils at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にてナブラに焦らされる)

The parking space for Saruwatari was empty this morning. Although I had already bought an offering (a canned coffee) to the small jizo (a stone statue in the form of a Buddhist monk) standing by the parking space for Safuki-bana, I decided to try Saruwatari today. There were moderate swells around the fishing spot, and no bubbles on the surface. Boils soon started to appear on the surface. They were always merely a few meters away from my casting distance. My lures couldn’t reach any one of the boils. I got tired and decided to call it a day. However, as soon as I decided so, some boils appeared within my casting distance. I started throwing my lures again. Then the boils disappeared. I decided to leave, but when I was about to leave, another boil appeared. It was easily within the reach of my lures. So I started throwing my lures again, but nothing happened. So I finally decided to go home, but another boil came up…. I was not sure how many times I repeated it. I was completely ridiculed by the fish.

（今朝、猿渡の駐車場は空いていました。サフキ鼻の駐車場の脇に立つ小さなお地蔵さんへのお供え物（缶コーヒー）を既に買っていた私でしたが、今日は猿渡を試すことにしました。釣り場の周囲には、適度なうねりがあり、水面に泡は出ていませんでした。まもなく水面にナブラが立ちました。ナブラは、いつも必ず、私のルアーが届く距離の数メートル先にあるのでした。私のルアーはナブラに届かないのです。私は疲れてしまい、今日はもう納竿しようと思いました。しかし、私がそう思った瞬間、いくつかのナブラが、私のルアーが届く範囲に立ったのでした。私は再び、ルアーを投げ始めました。すると、ナブラは消えました。だから、ついに私は釣り場を離れることにしましたが、そうしようとした瞬間、別のナブラが立ったのです。そのナブラは、余裕で私のルアーが届く範囲にありました。私はまたルアーを投げ始めたものの、何も起きません。そこでようやく私は、家に帰ることにしたのですが、するとまた別のナブラが…。どれだけこれを繰り返したことでしょう。魚たちに完全に馬鹿にされました。）

(No. 1017) Young Japanese Amberjack at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にてワカナ)

The water condition around Maruiwa in Owashi this morning looked the same as it had been around Safuki-bana in Nonami yesterday, except for the encouraging fact that there were no bubbles on the surface today. I started throwing my lures about 6:45 a.m., and nothing happened until abut 7:30 a.m. when suddenly the swells got stronger. When I noticed the change and reminded myself to be more careful, a fish snatched my Atom Atomizer. It happened just below my feet. I landed the fish before it realized it was hooked and being caught by a human. Only after I landed it did the fish start its tenacious resistance. It was a young Japanese amberjack, and I gratefully took it home.

（今朝の大芦の丸岩周辺は、昨日の野波のサフキ鼻周辺と同じような水況でしたが、今日は水面に泡がないことに希望が持てました。私は、午前６時45分頃からルアーを投げ始め、突然、うねりが強くなった７時半頃までは、何も起きませんでした。その変化に気づいた私が、よりいっそう注意深くあらねば、と思い直した時、魚がアトム・アトマイザーをひったくりました。私の足元での出来事でした。その魚が、自分は針にかかっており人間に釣り上げられかけているのだ、と気づく前に、私は魚を陸に上げることができました。陸に上げてからやっと、魚は執拗な抵抗を開始したのです。それはワカナ（若いブリ）でした。私は感謝しながら持ち帰りました。）

(No. 1016) No Fish at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて釣果なし)

Saruwatari becomes way more popular than Safuki-bana. As is often the case these days, Saruwatari was already taken by another early bird when I arrived at its parking space about 7 a.m. this morning. As a self-appointed “supporter” for Saruwatari, I am glad for the increased popularity. On the other hand, Safuki-bana was vacant. There was no car at the parking space for it. The same is true for the water around Safuki-bana. It was completely vacant, and neither predatory fish nor baitfish were swimming around. Some bluefin tunas were reported to be swimming along the shore of Shimane Peninsula. I wondered whether those powerful tunas had scared other fish away.

（猿渡の人気は、サフキ鼻よりも、ずっと高くなったようです。最近よくあることですが、今朝、午前７時に猿渡の駐車場に到着すると、すでに早起きの人が来ていて、猿渡は取られていたのでした。猿渡の「サポーター」を自称する者として、私は、人気の高まりを嬉しく思いました。一方、サフキ鼻は無人でした。その駐車場には、車がありません。同じことが、サフキ鼻周辺の海にも当てはまりました。完全に空っぽであり、捕食魚も、ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）も泳いでいません。クロマグロが島根半島の沿岸を泳いでいるとの報道がありました。あのパワフルなツナたちが、他の魚を追い払ってしまったのだろうか、と思いました。）

(No. 1015) One Contacted Strike at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて接触ありのストライク)

I started fishing about 7 a.m. this morning. It was about 7:45 when the swells around Safuki-bana got stronger. Then I felt something changed with the swells. What changed was the texture of the surface. I felt it through my topwater lure. When I noticed the change, a big fish hit my Atom Atomizer. Unlike the last time, the fish made contact with the lure. I felt the fish’s strong pull although it was not hooked. I got encouraged because I felt It was one step closer to catching the yellowtail amberjack. In addition to the strike, another nice thing happened to me. One of my fishing buddies (T-san) had found my car at the parking space and been waiting for me to come back. I had a nice chat with him, exchanging our unsuccessful stories of today. He said he had been at Saruwatari and nothing had happened there. To see a fishing buddy unexpectedly at a remote place like that parking space was very nice.

（今朝は午前７時頃から釣りを始めました。７時45分頃、サフキ鼻周辺のうねりが強くなりました。すると、うねりに合わせて何かが変わったように感じたのです。変わったのは、水面の質感でした。トップウォーターのルアーを通じてそれを感じました。その変化に気づいたとき、アトム・アトマイザーに大きな魚がヒットしました。前回とは違い、魚はルアーに接触しました。フッキングには至りませんでしたが、魚の強い引きを感じたのです。これでヒラマサに一歩近づいたと思い、私は励まされました。さらに、もうひとつ嬉しいことがありました。釣り友達の一人（Ｔさん）が、駐車スペースで私の車を見つけ、戻ってくるのを待っていたのです。お互いに釣果のふるわなかった今日の釣りについて、楽しくおしゃべりをしました。彼は猿渡に行ったそうですが、何も起きなかったということです。あの駐車場のような人里離れた場所で、思いがけず釣り友達に会えたことは、とても嬉しいことでした。）

(No. 1014) Big but Missed Strike at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて大きな、しかしミスったストライク)

Compared to the last time when my old classmate and I fished at Safuki-bana two days ago, the swells were stronger this morning. The size and the cadence of boils were smaller and longer respectively, but I felt the possibility of my lure inducing a big yellowtail amberjack to strike it was larger than two days ago. The fish might have been kind enough to let me know I was right. There was a big splashy strike on my Tsunami XD Talkin Popper. The fish might have been smart enough not to get caught by me. It was a heart-stopping thunderous strike, but the fish didn’t make contact with the lure. It got away scot-free.

（２日前に昔の同級生と釣行した時に比べて、今朝のサフキ鼻は、うねりが強かったのでした。ナブラのサイズと周期は、それぞれ前回より、小さくて長かったものの、私のルアーが大きなヒラマサをストライクに誘い込む可能性は、２日前より高いように感じました。そして、その魚は、私の考えが正しいことを教えてくれるほど、親切であったのかもしれません。ツナミXDトーキン・ポッパーに、大きな水しぶきの上がるストライクがあったのです。その魚は、私に釣られたりはしないほど、賢かったのかもしれません。心臓が止まりかねない雷鳴のようなストライクでしたが、魚はルアーに接触しなかったのです。魚は、無事に逃げおおせたのでした。）
