(No. 751) Cutting Thorny Weeds for Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻のために棘のある草刈り)

This morning I went to Safuki-bana in Nonami not so much for fishing as for cutting weeds along the path in the woods. I wanted to cut some thorny ones in particular. Those thorns are so sharp and strong that they can pierce through your clothes and make you bleed. As for fishing, there is nothing in particular this morning, too.

（今朝は、野波のサフキ鼻へ、釣りをしに、というよりは、林間の小道沿いの雑草を刈りに行きました。とりわけ、棘のついたやつを刈りたいと思いました。それらの棘はとても鋭くて強靭なので、服を突き破って傷め、流血をもたらすほどなのです。釣りについては、今朝も特に何もありませんでした。）

(No. 750) My Selfish Appeal to Deity of Fishing (釣りの神様への利己的なアピール)

I am a very selfish man. Whenever I clean the litter at a fishing spot, I do in a showy way. I do my best to attract attention. Because I believe the existence of the deity of fishing. If the deity sees my good deed, he/she must reward me with a good catch. Whenever I take a walk along the shore of Lake Shinji in the morning, I always carry a plastic bag with me. If I find a cigarette butt, I pick it up and put it in the bag for proper disposal afterward. Above photos are such cigarette butts I picked up this morning. In one month or so the Japanese sea bass will arrive in the lake, and I will begin the hunt for the migratory fish in earnest. Cigarette butts are bad for nature. I expect the deity to reward me with a huge Japanese sea bass. I am a very selfish man.

（私は非常に利己的な人間です。釣り場のゴミを片付ける時は、いつも、これ見よがしに片付けます。注目を集めようと全力を尽くすのです。なぜなら私は、釣りの神様の存在を信じているからです。私の善い行いが釣りの神様の目に留まれば、神様はきっとご褒美に、良い魚を釣らせてくれるに違いないのです。朝、宍道湖岸を散歩する時はいつも、ビニール袋を携えています。そして、吸殻を見つけたら、拾って袋に入れ、適切に処分するのです。上の写真は、今朝、私が拾った吸殻たちです。１カ月ほどしたら、スズキが湖に現れ、私はこの回遊性の魚を熱心に追いかけることになるでしょう。吸殻は自然にとって害悪です。釣りの神様が巨大なスズキで報いてくれることを期待しています。私は非常に利己的な人間です。）

As was often the case these days, there was nothing in particular with regard to fishing. I threw my favorite lures from Safuki-bana in Nonami this morning. I did not see any baitfish, let alone any predatory fish. However, with regard to nature, I have something to say. As I had already mentioned two weeks ago, I got amazed again how fast nature took its course. Some parts of the path in the woods were almost completely covered with weeds!

（近頃はいつもそうなのですが、釣りに関して特にお伝えすべきことはありません。今朝は、野波のサフキ鼻から、お気に入りのルアーを投げました。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿はありませんし、ましてや肉食魚はどこにもいません。しかし、自然というものについてなら、言いたいことがあるのです。２週間前に既に触れたことですが、自然が変化するその早さに再び驚いたのでした。林中の小道は、そのところどころが、雑草でほとんど完全に覆われていたのです！）

(No. 748) Higher Gear Ratio Couldn't Improve My Catch at Saruwatari in Nonami (高速ギア比であっても野波の猿渡にて釣果の改善なし)

Thanks to one of wonderful videos by 2nd Chance Tackle, I recently found that the gearing of PENN 210 conventional reel is the same as that of PENN Jigmaster 500. I had known that Special Senator 112H (3/0) and Jigmaster 500 share the same gearing, but I hadn’t have any idea about PENN 210. I don’t think many fishermen know the fact, either. Now that I knew 500 and 210 share the same gearing, I installed one of the aftermarket higher-ratio gears, which are specifically produced for 500, on 210. Ta-da! Now the gear ratio of my Penn 210 is 4.8:1, significantly improved from the original ratio, 4:1. Nevertheless, unlike the gear ratio, my catch was not improved at all.

（2ndチャンス・タックルの素晴らしいビデオのおかげで、PENN 210 両軸リールのギアが、PENNジグマスター500のギアと同じであることを知りました。スペシャル・セネター112H (3/0)とジグマスター500のギアが同じであることは知っていましたが、PENN 210のことは全く知らなかったのでした。この事実を知っている釣り人は、あまり多くないのではないかと私は思います。さて、500と210のギアが同じであることを知った私は、500用のサードパーティー製高速ギアを、210に搭載してみたのです。そしたら、なんと！　私のPENN 210のギア比は、元の4:1から4.8:1へと著しく改善されたではありませんか。しかし、ギア比とは異なり、私の釣果が改善されることはありませんでした。）

(No. 747) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

As I mentioned in my last post, I felt a premonition that I would be busy very soon. However, some of my translation assignments had been cancelled since then, and I am not as busy as I thought I would be. So this morning I went to Saruwatari in Nonami. Now that I didn’t get very busy doing my job, I hoped I would be busy catching big fish, but nothing happened.

（前回の投稿で触れましたが、私は、じきに多忙になるような気がしたのでした。しかしその後、いくつかの通訳の仕事がキャンセルとなり、私は、予測していたほどは忙しくなっていないのでした。そこで今朝、野波の猿渡へ行きました。仕事がそれほど忙しくはないので、大物を釣るのに忙しくしたいものだと思いましたが、何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 746) No Fish at Niregi-no-hato in Owashi Harbor (大芦港の楡木の波止にて釣果なし)

In 1999 Ricky Martin sang, “I feel a premonition. That girl’s gonna make me fall.” Now I sing, “I feel a premonition. That job’s gonna make me busy.” So this morning I went to Niregi-no-hato in Owashi. I was afraid that I might get too busy too soon to go fishing. To my surprise, the wind was still chilly at Niregi-no-hato. I enjoyed throwing my lures as usual, but no fish responded. It seemed as if all fish had vanished from the sea.

(No. 745) No Fish at Four Fishing Spots along Ohashi River and Lake Nakaumi (大橋川と中海の４つの釣り場にて釣果なし)

This morning I embarked on the wide-area run-and-gun style fishing. I started at the Ohashi River by Nakaumi Ohashi Bridge, moved eastward along the southern shore of Lake Nakaumi, and ended at Yonago Port. I couldn’t find any other fishermen during the course. So I couldn’t even have a little chat. In addition, I kept annoyed by the very strong crosswind all along. On top of that, no fish responded to my lures at all. Still, I enjoyed throwing my lures from completely unfamiliar fishing spots.

（今朝は、広域ラン＆ガン方式の釣りに乗り出しました。大橋川の中海大橋のたもとから開始し、中海の南岸沿いに東方へ移動して、米子港で終了しました。その間、他の釣り人を見かけませんでした。なので軽い会話すら出来ませんでした。加えて、とても強い横風に最初から悩まされっぱなしでした。さらには、私のルアーに反応する魚は皆無でした。それでも私は、全く見知らぬ釣り場でルアーを投げるのを楽しみました。）

(No. 744) Couldn’t Find My Bear Bell at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて熊よけ鈴、見つからず)

I must have left my bear bell at Safuki-Bana or the farther spot in Nonami. When I came back from the fishing spots to the parking space 4 days ago, I realized the bell was not attached to my backpack. I was sure I left it at one of the fishing spots, but I was too tired to go back and fetch it. This morning I went to Safuki-bana for not only fishing but also finding my bear bell. You should wear a bear bell if you need to walk in woods of the Shimane Peninsula. A bear bell would allow animals, such as a bear or a wild boar, to be aware of your presence and away from you. I thought it would be easy to find my bear bell at one of the fishing spots, but I couldn’t find it. Where did my bell go? Then I threw my lures toward the ocean, but I couldn’t catch any fish. Where did my fish go?

（熊よけの鈴を、野波のサフキ鼻か、そのさらに遠い釣り場のどちらかで落としたに違いありません。４日前、釣り場から駐車スペースに戻ってきた私は、バックパックに鈴が付いていないことに気づきました。どちらかの釣り場に落としたに違いないと思いましたが、疲れていたので引き返して拾ってくることはできませんでした。今朝、私は、釣りをするためだけでなく、熊よけの鈴を見つけるために、サフキ鼻へ行きました。島根半島の林中を歩く必要がある場合は、熊よけの鈴を身に着けるべきです。鈴のおかげで、熊や猪などの動物は、あなたの存在に気づき、あなたから離れていくのです。私はどちらかの釣り場で容易に鈴が見つかるだろうと考えていましたが、見つけることはできませんでした。私の鈴はどこへ行ったのでしょう？　続いて私は大海に向けてルアーを投げましたが、魚を釣ることはできませんでした。私の魚はどこへ行ったのでしょう？）

(No. 743) No Fish at Safuki-bana and Even Farther Spot in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻及び、さらに遠い釣り場にて釣果なし)

As I had mentioned in my last post, the current along the shore of Nonami didn't move at all this morning either. I was at Safuki-bana, one of the serious fishing spots in Nonami. Because the sea was very calm and quiet with neither waves nor swells, I decided to try what I had refrained from doing. I had wondered whether I could go over the crevice and advance beyond the eastern end of Safuki-bana. According to the very useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook,” you are neither able nor recommended to do so. The dotted line that indicates the accessibility on the map ends at the crevice. However, I had supposed that I could manage to do it if the sea was calm enough for me not to worry about being drenched with the waves. This morning I proved I was right. I carefully went over the crevice and advanced to the area that should be inaccessible according to the guidebook. Unfortunately, even such an achievement couldn’t change the result of my fishing.

（前回の投稿で触れましたが、今朝も、野波沿岸の潮は全く動いていませんでした。私がいたのは、野波にある本格的な釣り場の一つ、サフキ鼻でした。波もうねりもなく、海がとても穏やかで静かだったので、私は、これまでやるのを控えていたことをやってみることにしました。サフキ鼻の東端にある裂け目を越えて、その先まで進めるのだろうかと、私はずっと考えていたのです。とても役に立つ『山陰の釣り場総覧』では、その先には進めない、あるいはその先に進むのは推奨できない、ということになっています。進めるかどうかを示す地図上の点線が、裂け目のところで切れているのです。しかし私は、もしも海が十分に穏やかで、波をかぶって濡れることを心配する必要がなければ、何とか先へ進めるのではないかと考えてきました。そして今朝、私は自分の正しさを証明できました。私は、注意しながら裂け目を越え、『山陰の釣り場総覧』ではアクセス不能であるはずの場所まで進めたのです。あいにくそんな偉業ですら、私の釣果を変えてはくれませんでしたが。）

(No. 742) No Fish at Ohashi River (大橋川にて釣果なし)

This late afternoon I went to one of many fishing spots along the Ohashi River. Local fishermen call the spot “Pachinkoya-no-ura” in Japanese, which means a spot behind a pachinko parlor. The spot is literally behind a pachinko parlor. When I arrived, there was one bait fishermen, and the current was pretty fast in the river. It reminded me of Breezy Point in New York City. Unlike the Ohashi River and Breezy Point, it is rare for currents to run fast along the rocky shore of Shimane Peninsula, where I often go fishing. I threw the Super Strike Zig Zag to the river, remembering how effective it could be at Breezy Point.

（今日は午後遅く、大橋川沿いに多くある釣り場の一つに行きました。地元の釣り人はそこを「パチンコ屋の裏」と呼びます。実際にパチンコ屋の裏にあるのです。到着した時には、エサ釣り師が一人いて、そして川の流れが相当に速かったのでした。私はニューヨーク市のブリーズィー・ポイントを思い出しました。私がよく釣りに行く島根半島の磯は、大橋川やブリーズィー・ポイントと異なり、潮が速く流れるのは稀なのです。私はスーパーストライク・ジグザグを大橋川に投げました。このルアーがブリーズィー・ポイントでどれだけ有効だったか思い出しながら。）

(No. 741) No Fish at Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻にて釣果なし)

Three weeks had passed since I last visited Safuki-bana. However, when I was climbing down on the path toward the fishing spot in Nonami this morning, I felt much longer time had passed. I am always amazed how fast nature takes its course. The path had been brown when I was there last time. Today it was getting vibrant with sprouting fresh greens. The spring seemed to have arrived on land a bit earlier than in the sea.

（サフキ鼻を最後に訪れてから３週間が経過していました。しかし今朝、小道を下ってその野波の釣り場へ向かっている時、もっと長い時間が経過したように感じられました。自然が変化するその早さには、いつも驚かされます。前回、そこにいた時、小道は茶色でした。しかし今日は、新緑が伸び、色鮮やかになりつつありました。どうやら春は、海よりもひと足早く、陸に到来したようです。）

(No. 740) Casting Practice at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてキャスティング練習)

I am snowed under with work now. I don’t have time to go to the rocky shore of the Shimane Peninsula. Instead, I enjoy throwing my lures toward the vast surface of Lake Shinji. The lake is just 5-minute walk away from my place. I know it’s too early to catch the Japanese sea bass on any lure at the lake. Still, whenever I throw my lure, I feel as if some monster fish were lurking inside the murky water.

（仕事に忙殺されています。島根半島の磯に行く時間は取れません。代わりに私は、宍道湖の広大な水面に向けてルアーを投げるのを楽しんでいます。湖は家から歩いて５分の距離なのです。湖でスズキをルアーで釣るにはまだ時期尚早だと分かってはいます。しかしやはり、ルアーを投げていると、薄暗い水中にモンスターが潜んでいるような気がします。）

(No. 739) No Fish at Nagasaki-bana in Mitsu (御津の長崎鼻にて釣果なし)

When I was about to leave my place for Saruwatari or Safuki-bana in Nonami this morning, my father handed a morning paper to me and said, “A big fire in Kaka!” According to the paper, the fire that had broken out yesterday evening was not yet extinguished as of 11 p.m. In order to reach Nonami, I have to pass through Kaka. When I reached the intersection between Kaka and Owashi, I noticed the main road to Kaka was cordoned off and two police officers standing in front of road cones. One of them ran to me, and I asked him, “Still on fire?” Without answering my question directly, he said, “a helicopter is hovering over to do sprinkling.” I turned back at the intersection and drove back to Mitsu. I went to Nagasaki-bana. I was not able to enjoy today’s fishing very much.

（今朝、野波の猿渡かサフキ鼻へ向けて出発しようとしていると、父が私に朝刊を手渡し、言ったのでした。「加賀で大火事だと！」。朝刊によると、火事は昨夕発生し、午後11時の時点では、まだ消火できていないとのことでした。野波へ行くには、加賀を通過しないといけません。加賀と大芦の間の交差点に着いてみると、加賀へと続く道路は封鎖されており、ロードコーンの前には警官が２人立っていました。そのうちの１人が私の方に駆け寄ってきたので、私は尋ねました。「まだ燃えてますか？」。私の問いに直接答えることなく、警官は言いました。「ヘリコプターが撒いているんですよ」。私は交差点で引き返し、御津に戻りました。長崎鼻へ行きました。今日の釣りはあまり楽しめませんでした。）
