(No. 1057) Leaving Breadcrumbs along Trail to Ketakake Peninsula (桁掛半島に至る小道にパン屑を残す)

A few days ago it was reported that one angler from outside Shimane Prefecture was rescued at night in the woods around the Ketakake Peninsula in Izumo City. You have to walk a long distance on the up-and-down trail in the woods to reach the peninsula. According to one of local newspapers, the angler called the police by himself to inform he or she was lost in the woods. When I read the article, I felt a bit responsible for his or her misfortune. I have written about my trips to the peninsula on this blog, and I wondered if the unfortunate angler had read those posts. I wondered if the angler had underestimated the treacherous nature of walking to the Ketakake Peninsula due to my easy-going posts.

（先日、島根県外からの釣り人が、出雲市の桁掛半島周辺の林の中で、夜間、救助されたとの報道がありました。半島へ行くには、上り下りを繰り返す林の中の小道を、延々と歩かねばなりません。地元の新聞によると、その釣り人は、自ら警察に通報して、林の中で道に迷ったことを知らせたそうです。その記事を読んだ私は、釣り人のその災難に少し責任を感じました。このブログでも、半島に行った時のことを書いているため、その不運な釣り人は私の投稿を読んだのかもしれない、と思ったのです。私の投稿が気楽過ぎたため、桁掛半島への徒歩がはらみ得る危険性を甘く見てしまったのではないか、と思ったのです。）

So today I decided to walk the trail to the peninsula with a reel of red tape in my pocket, investigating key points that might have tricked the unfortunate angler. Before entering into the woods, one of local professional fishermen kindly shouted to me, “Get back before it’s dark.” He must have known what had happened to the unfortunate angler a few days earlier. Walking toward the peninsula, I collected a lot of old red tape that had fallen to the ground. Ultraviolet rays or something must have deteriorated the old tapes, so they had fallen from trees. I tied the new tape to some trees as Hansel and Gretel had done with breadcrumbs. I also attached white plastic cups to some particularly important trees. I hope the chance of inexperienced angler getting lost in the woods is now smaller. I noticed a curious deer looking at me, but it was gone before I could take a picture of it. As for fishing, I threw my favorite lures from Ohbira in the peninsula, but nothing happened.

（そこで今日、赤いテープをポケットに入れた私は、半島までの小道を歩き、不運な釣り人が騙されてしまったかもしれない要所を調査してみることにしました。林に入っていく前に、地元の漁師さんが「暗んな〜までに帰ってく〜だよ」と親切に叫んでくださいました。きっとこの人は、数日前に不運な釣り人の身に起きたことを、ご存知なのでしょう。半島に向かって歩きながら、私は、地面に落ちている古い赤テープをたくさん回収しました。紫外線か何かのせいで劣化し、木から落ちてしまったのです。私は、ヘンゼルとグレーテルがパン屑でやったように、新しい赤テープを木にくくり付けていきました。特に重要な木には、白いプラスチックのカップも取り付けました。これで、経験不足な釣り人が林の中で迷子になる可能性が低くなるといいのですが......。好奇心旺盛な鹿がこちらを見ているのに気づきましたが、写真を撮る前にいなくなりました。釣りはといえば、桁掛半島の釣り場の一つ「大びら」からお気に入りのルアーを投げてみましたが、何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 1056) Dogs? around Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩周辺で犬たち？)

I don’t have much to write about today’s fishing at Maruiwa in Owashi. The sea looked promising this morning, but nothing happened. Mr. F, one of my fishing buddies who frequents Maruiwa, came later, and I had a nice chat with him. I took a picture of his self-made rod holder which I think looks great. While I was chatting with Mr. F, I heard a dog barking in the distance. A pair of small dogs were walking on the top of hill behind Maruiwa. It’s rare to see dogs along the rocky shore of the Shimane Peninsula. I couldn’t remember whether I had seen any dogs there before. Were they stray dogs? Anyway, I got very curious and did my best to take pictures of them. Later I realize they might be foxes.

（大芦の丸岩での今日の釣りについては、あまり書くことがありません。今朝の海は期待できそうに見えましたが、何も起きませんでした。丸岩によく来られる釣り友達のＦさんが後から来たので、私は楽しくおしゃべりをしました。彼が自作したロッドホルダーを写真に撮りましたが、かっこいいですね。Ｆさんとおしゃべりしていると、遠くから犬の鳴き声が聞こえてきました。丸岩の裏にある丘の上を、２頭の小型犬が歩いていました。島根半島の磯沿いで犬を見かけるのは珍しいと思います。私は、以前に犬を見たことがあるかどうか、思い出せませんでした。野良犬なのでしょうか？　とにかく興味をそそられた私は、一生懸命写真を撮りました。後で気づきましたが、キツネだったのかも。）

(No. 1055) No Fish at Uomiyama and Mitsu Harbor (魚見山と御津港にて釣果なし)

I have kept going to Mitsu Harbor since I almost caught a big fluke on one of my darter plugs. I have tried to catch the same fish, but the sea was getting calmer and calmer, and the water inside the harbor clearer and clearer. Which means, I guess, the chance to catch the fish was getting smaller and smaller. This afternoon I first went to Uomiyama, a rocky shore adjacent to Mitsu Harbor. I thought the fluke might have already left the harbor and been swimming around Uomiyama. Unfortunately, that did not seem to be the case. Then I tried Mitsu Harbor again. The water was so clear that I was able to see the bottom of it. I didn’t see any animate things there. The fluke might have been gone for good, only leaving lingering anticipation in my heart.

（ダータープラグの一つで大きなヒラメが釣れかけて以来、御津港に足を運び続けています。同じ魚を釣ろうと試みているのです。しかし、海はどんどん穏やかになっていき、港内の水もどんどん澄んでいくのでした。ということは、あの魚が釣れるチャンスもどんどん小さくなっているのだと思います。今日の午後は、御津港に隣接する磯、魚見山にまず行ってみました。あのヒラメは、すでに港を出てしまい、魚見山のあたりを泳いでいるのではないかと思ったのです。残念ながら、そういうわけではないようでした。私は、再び御津港を試しました。水はとても澄んでいて、港の底が丸見えでした。生き物の姿はありません。あのヒラメは、永久に姿を消してしまったのかもしれません。私の心に、なかなか消えない期待だけを残して。）

(No. 1054) Missed Fluke? at Mitsu Harbor (御津港にてヒラメ？を逃す)

The waves were so high and the wind was so strong this afternoon that there was no way for me to go to a serious rocky shore, such as Safuki-bana in Nonami. I had to settle for Mitsu Harbor, a much safer fishing spot. There was a bait fisherman there. As soon as I started throwing my big lures, he talked to me. He asked, “Trying to catch amberjacks?” I replied, “Not exactly. When the sea is rough, big fish, such as the Japanese sea bass, often come inside the harbor.” Looking impressed with what I said, he went back to his own fishing for Aji fish (Japanese horse mackerel).

（今日の午後は波が高く、風も強かったので、野波のサフキ鼻のような本格的な磯には行くことができませんでした。仕方なく、より安全な釣り場である御津港で手を打ちました。そこには一人、エサ釣り師の姿がありました。私が大きなルアーを投げ始めると、彼はすぐに話しかけてきました。「青物ねらいですか？」と彼は尋ねます。私は答えました。「必ずしも、そういうわけでは。海が荒れると、スズキなど大型の魚が港内に入ってくるんですよ」。私の言ったことに感心したような彼は、自分がやっているアジ釣りに戻っていきました。）

A short while later, what I said to him actually happened! I saw something big and white attack my Swimming Darter by Washed Ashore Fishing Lures. It was just below my feet, and I was completely unprepared although what was happening in front of me was exactly what I told him. I couldn’t do anything effective in hooking the fish. It was gone. Anyway, I got impressed again with the unique ability of the so-called “darter” plug to raise a big fish from the bottom. I remembered that similar attacks had happened before on other darters, such as the Super Strike Zig Zag and the Northbar Montauk Darter.

（それからしばらくして、私が言ったことが実際に起きたのです！　白くて大きな何かが、ウォッシュド・アショア・フィッシング・ルアーズ製のスイミング・ダーターに襲いかかるのが見えました。自分が話したことが、まさに今、目の前で起きているにもかかわらず、私はまったく心構えができていませんでした。フッキングに有効なことは何もできませんでした。魚は去っていきました。それにしても「ダーター」というプラグがもつ、底にいる大物を浮かせる独特な能力にあらためて感心させられました。そういえば以前にも、スーパーストライク・ジグザグやノースバー・モントーク・ダーターなど、他のダーターで同じようなアタックがあったのでした。）

(No. 1053) How to Attach Trigger to Clamp for Newell Reel (ニューウェル・リールのクランプにトリガーを付ける)

I have loved Newell conventional reels since I obtained them last year. It’s a shame that the late Mr. Newell’s company doesn’t exist anymore, but his reels are still loved by avid fishermen. Many decades ago, when his reels were still in production, the package of Newell reels said, “America’s most advanced for salt-water fishing.” I feel it remains true even today. I actually sold my Shimano Scorpion MD (a very modern reel) in order to get a used Newell G332-F (at least 30 years old), and I feel the latter is superior from my peculiar perspective. I use my Newell reels to cast lures. So I attached a trigger to its clamp. How to do it is illustrated in the above photos. Materials needed are as follows; Aluminum push pin, plastic tape, stainless steel wire, thread for rod building, and two-part epoxy adhesive.

(No. 1052) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて釣果なし)

February is probably one of the least productive months for my fishing. I guess the water temperature is simply too low for most predatory fish to chase my lures. Still I enjoy going fishing. Most fishermen I see these days are for squids, not for fish. So I often feel I am an exceptional fisherman more at this time of year.

（２月は、私の釣りにとって、最も釣果のない月の一つでしょう。思うに、ほとんどの捕食魚にとって、私のルアーを追いかけるには、水温が低すぎるのです。それでも、釣りに行くのは楽しいものです。最近見かける釣り人のほとんどは、魚ではなくイカを狙っています。ですので、この時期は特に、自分のことを例外的な釣り人だと思うことが多いです。）

(No. 1051) No Fish around Safuki-bana in Nonami (野波のサフキ鼻周辺にて釣果なし)

It was my first visit to Safuki-bana after the once-in-a-decade cold wave arrived and left a lot of snow behind. I saw the aftermath of it here and there. A fallen rock almost blocked Cherry Road in Nonami (already reported to the authority). A snapped huge tree almost blocked the path in the woods. Some huge rocks might be wobbly along the shore due to the accumulated snow, and my one step could be the final straw that broke the camel's back. I didn’t like to be trapped in the similar situation as the movie “127 Hour.” I told myself to be more careful than usual. Unfortunately the swells were too strong around Safuki-bana for me to get to it, but I managed to fish around it without any injuries. All that I caught was floating sea weeds, but I enjoyed today’s thrilling fishing trip a lot.

（10年に一度と言われた大寒波が訪れ、たくさんの雪を残していった後、初めてのサフキ鼻釣行です。大寒波の余波を、あちこちで目にしました。野波のチェリーロードは、落石で塞がれそうになっていました（当局に報告済み）。折れた大木が、林の中の小道を塞ぎかけていました。沿岸の巨石の中には、積雪のせいでグラグラしているものもあるかもしれず、私の一歩がきっかけとなって、巨石が倒れてしまうかもしれません。映画『127時間』のような状況に陥るのは避けたいところでした。いつも以上に注意深くしなければいけない、と自分に言い聞かせました。残念ながら、サフキ鼻の周辺はうねりが強く、渡ることはできませんでしたが、なんとかその周辺で、怪我することなく釣りができました。釣れたものといえば、漂う海草だけでしたが、今日のスリリングな釣行は大いに楽しむことができました。）

(No. 1050) No Fish at Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の須々海鼻にて釣果なし)

The water inside Susumi Bay was so calm this afternoon. I thought the water around Susumi-hana, the eastern end of the bay, was also too calm, but actually it was choppy. So my expectations were raised a bit. I kept throwing my lures in many directions, but wherever I threw my lure to, no fish responded. On my way back to my car, I chatted with two fishermen who were heading to Susumi-hana. They were trying to catch squids about sunset. In order to catch squids, you have to use “egi,” a traditional Japanese lure for squids. A few American lure makers produce “egi” lures, but I feel “egi” is too Japanese. For this reason, I choose not to use it.

（今日の午後、須々海湾内の水はとても穏やかでした。湾の東端、須々海鼻周辺の水もまた穏やかであろうと思ったのですが、実際には波立っていました。そのため、私の期待は少し高まりました。いろいろな方向にルアーを投げ続けましたが、どこに投げても、魚からの反応はありません。車に戻る途中、須々海鼻に向かう釣り人、２人と話しました。彼らは日没前後にイカを狙うのです。イカを釣るには、日本の伝統的なイカ釣り用ルアーである「餌木」を使わないといけません。アメリカのルアーメーカーの中にも、餌木を作っているところはありますが、私は餌木はあまりに日本的な感じがするのです。そのため、餌木は使わないことにしています。）
