About this blog (このブログのこと)

My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 353) No Fish at Ooi-no-hato in Uppurui Bay

Originally, I intended to cast lures from Oh-hato at Uppurui Harbor in Izumo City this morning. I had expected to catch Japanese sea bass, young Japanese Spanish mackerels, or flukes. However, I found part of the breakwater was under construction, so that I could not park my car along it. I turned back and found another fishing spot in Uppurui Bay. I didn’t know the name of the breakwater then, but now I know it is called Ooi-no-hato, thanks to the very useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook.” There was one lure fisherman at a tip of the breakwater. He told me it was only recently that he had started this hobby. I introduced myself to him and then gave him some tips such as how and when you could catch a big Japanese sea bass at Lake Shinji. Although no fish seemed around us unfortunately, I enjoyed the chat with him today.

(No. 352) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

Contradictorily expecting another unexpected encounter to happen, I drove to Ikesu in Etomo this late afternoon. However, halfway to the magical fishing spot, I found I had left a pair of fishing boots at my place. I would absolutely need it for walking up and down the slippery rocky shore. Unfortunately I had to change my plan and headed toward Etomo Harbor instead, in order to fish at Nanbo, one of the breakwaters where you can walk around safely with normal sneakers.
Not only the warm weather but also the presence of small fish around Nanbo made me feel the spring came at last. Whenever my big plug came closer to the school of small fish, they got spooked and tried to escape from it. They believed the plug was a predatory fish that tried to devour them. Unfortunately nothing happened to my plugs today, but I hoped for any larger fish to notice the ripples that the small fish made on the surface and to come to attack the predatory fish, namely my plug.

(No. 351) When Unable to Go Fishing I Listen to the Austin 100 (釣りに行けない時は「Austin 100」を聴く)

It is raining now. My tight work schedule and unfortunate timing of rainfall have prevented me from going fishing. When I am unable to go fishing, I listen to the Austin 100. National Public Radio (NPR) in the U.S. compiled the annual Austin 100 for the SXSW (South by Southwest) Music Festival in 2018. Some of my readers already know the Austin 100 as I mentioned it on my blog in the past. The music staff at NPR listens to more than 2000 artists that play for the annual SXSW and selects best 100 songs each year. All the songs are downloadable now for free. I already found many favorites in this year’s selection. Right now I am listening to “Oom Sha La La” by Haley Heynderickx, one of such songs. If you are interested, go to the Austin 100 site and find the link to download the entire collection. You may want to hurry because the free service usually ends at the end of March.

(No. 350) Unexpected Encounter at Ikesu in Etomo

As I implied in my previous post, I left Senjojiki in Mitsu without climbing down to it this morning. However, the sarashi (white churning water) on my mind became more and more appealing as time went by. So I returned to the spot this late afternoon. Unfortunately the parking space was already occupied. I had to find another fishing spot as soon as possible because it’s getting dark. After visiting a few occupied parking spaces, it occurred to me to go to Ikesu in Etomo. Sure enough I found the parking space vacant. However, the swell toward Ikesu was a bit too strong for me to cast lures comfortably. I made just several casts and gave up fishing.
After peeling off a slight patch of nori (delicious seaweed) adhering to the rock and tasting it, I decided to return to the parking space. To my surprise, there was a lady standing on the narrow path on the edge of precipice. She was taking pictures of the setting sun. I was a bit scared of the sight. Although I was on the same path, I felt the path under her might collapse at any moment. So I gave her some caution about walking along the mountain path and led her to where she could get a better view of Ikesu. She said that she had found my car at the parking space while looking for a better spot to take pictures and had tracked down the narrow mountain path to the shore through the woods. I was amazed. How brave she was!

(No. 349) Nice Chat above Senjojiki in Mitsu while No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Edabo in Etomo Harbor

These days I abandon using metal jigs such as Deadly Dick or Hopkins. All that I carry to a shore become big wooden or plastic plugs. Due to this preference, I may lose the possibility of catching some fish such as young Japanese Spanish mackerels, which respond well to a small shiny metals. However, somehow I feel happier. Even if I become less likely to catch some fish, I prefer using only my favorite types of lures.
This morning I started fishing at Kurauchi Bay and then at Edabo in Etomo Harbor. “Did you catch any fish?” I asked one of a few fishermen in the harbor, and he replied to me, “Completely no fish.” Then I drove to the parking space overlooking Senjojiki in Mitsu. The flat fishing spot below was surrounded with sarashi (white churning water). It looked promising, but I came across a friendly old man who enjoyed walking along the road on the mountainside using two canes. He was talkative and knew interesting facts about fishing in the area. It was such a nice chat that I felt satisfied even without getting down to Senjojiki to fish.

(No. 348) Mysterious Plastic Buckets Found at Susumi Bay while No Fish at Owashi and Sanami Harbors

The swell was still strong when I started fishing at Niregi-no-hato in Owashi Harbor this morning. I hoped I would catch a Japanese sea bass, but nothing happened. Then, I moved to Ogu-no-hato, another breakwater in the harbor. It seemed that there was no creature in the harbor except several surfers who waited patiently for strong waves. Because of the tenacious swell, I still hoped I would catch a Japanese sea bass somewhere, so I drove to vacant Sanami Harbor, and then to Susumi Bay in Owashi. Neither spot produced any strike, but I found the mysterious plastic buckets at Susumi Bay. Since this February it has been reported that a large quantity of mysterious plastic buckets drifted ashore in the Sanin Region. Some of them reportedly still contain a strong acid. If you find it, you had better avoid it.

(No. 347) No Fish at Saruwatarijima in Owashi and at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

It was so warm today that I almost believed the spring came earlier than usual. Of course I was wrong. The sea remained as quiet as it had been in the harsh winter days. This afternoon I started fishing at Saruwatarijima in Owashi. I did not see any baitfish around the small island on the west end of Susumi Bay. Then, I drove to Nanbo, one of the most convenient breakwater in Etomo Harbor. There were a few fishermen here and there, but no one seemed to catch fish. I stayed there until it got dark. I did not feel cold at all. With the warm weather, I did not lose my concentration until the end. Although no fish, I felt good.
