My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 342) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

It has been colder than usual this winter. Taking advantage of hiatus between job assignments, I drove to Etomo Harbor this afternoon. I had hoped to catch young Japanese Spanish mackerels, but I gave up fishing way before sunset. Unlike the last few days, there had been no serious snowfall today, but the winds were too chilly to keep casting lures. Two bait fishermen were fishing at Nanbo. I talked to one of them, to whom I had talked the other day too. “Any fish?” I asked, and he shouted sharply as if he tried to beat the bitter coldness. “Nothing!”

(No. 341) Unable to Fish at Kozu Harbor in Uppurui Bay

After driving my father to Izumo Airport this morning, I drove to Uppurui Bay in Izumo City. Although I knew that a snowstorm was rapidly approaching the area and therefore the sea was already rough, I thought I might be able to fish at somewhere in Uppurui Bay. I hoped I would catch the Japanese sea bass at Kozu Harbor, which is one of inner parts of the bay. When the sea is rough, the fish often come inside a bay, sometimes even to a very inner part of it. The waves were not very high when I arrived at the harbor, but the wind was extremely strong. It was so gusty that there was no way for me to stand at the tip of the small breakwater of the harbor. I would fall into the ravaging sea.

(No. 340) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay, Nanbo in Etomo Harbor, and Ikesu in Etomo

The snow melted away at last, and I felt it was safe enough to go fishing this morning. First, I tried Kurauchi Bay. The sea was not very rough, but there were a few patches of sarashi (white churning water) left along the rocky shore. I hoped I would catch a nice Japanese sea bass, but I left the spot after making just several casts. Whenever I caught the fish at the bay, I was successful within a few casts. Next, I drove to Nanbo in Etomo Harbor, but, as was the case these days, no fish seemed around. Lastly, I tried Ikesu in Etomo. This spot was a feast for the eyes as always, but no fish was around there either.

(No. 339) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor

Since New Year’s Day the cold wind had been too strong and the sea had been too rough. Today the wing died down and the sea got calm at last. It was about 4:30 p.m. that I started casting my lures from Nanbo, one of breakwaters in Etomo Harbor. I primarily used small metal jigs, which are most effective in catching young Japanese Spanish mackerels. Carelessly I had declared that I would take some of the fish to my friends this evening. Unfortunately the fish were not around along the shore.

(No. 338) No Fish at Etomo Harbor

I wish you a happy New Year. I also wish you happy and safe fishing in 2018. Japan has a long tradition of sending New Year’s cards, but I didn’t like it very much because most of them tended to be perfunctory. So I decided not to send New Year’s cards anymore when I came back to Japan in the autumn of 2014. The fact that I had lived in the U.S. since 2001 made the decision easier because most of my friends in Japan had stopped sending the cards to me. Instead of following the tradition, I started recording New Year's rap for my friends. I guessed listening to a rap music would be more joyful than receiving a perfunctory card even if the rapper was worse than mediocre. If you get tired of perfunctory cards, you can listen to my New Year's rap here (I am sorry that all lyrics are in Japanese and not very related to fishing).
This afternoon I tried to catch the first fish in 2018 at various spots in Etomo Harbor. I did the run-and-gun style fishing all along. Because a strong chilly wind kept blowing, I had to walk around in order not to feel too cold. I saw some fishermen at the tip of Sinsinbo. They seemed to catch young Japanese Spanish mackerels on metal jigs, but the wind was too strong for me to feel like fishing from the most dangerous spot in the harbor. Instead, I kept casting big American plugs toward inside the harbor. I thought I could catch a Japanese sea bass or a fluke if I was lucky, but I did not expect too much. I just enjoyed casting my favorite plugs.
