(No. 773) No Fish at Kukedo-bana in Kaka (加賀の潜戸鼻にて釣果なし)

I drove through the bumpy narrow road in the woods of Kaka and arrived at the parking space in Kukedo-bana about 6 a.m. this morning. I got amazed at how popular Kukedo-bana was. Although it was Monday today, there were already three cars left at the parking space. Even after I started throwing my lures from Senjojiki, one of the fishing spots in Kukedo-bana, two new fishermen came to the spot one after another. One of the new fishermen said he was for the red sea bream. After I kept throwing my lures for one hour and failed to catch anything, I asked him if he had caught anything. He said, “only bycatch.” Then, after knowing I had been for the yellowtail amberjack, he consoled me saying, “You would catch it if the sea were a bit rougher.” Afterward I took a picture of sea anemone with my underwater camera.

（加賀の林中のデコボコした狭い道を走り、今朝６時頃、潜戸鼻の駐車スペースに到着しました。潜戸鼻の人気の高さに驚きました。今日は月曜日だというのに、駐車スペースには既に３台の車が駐められていたのです。潜戸鼻の釣り場の一つ、千畳敷でルアーを投げ始めてからも、新しい釣り人が２人、次々とやって来ました。そのうちの一人は真鯛狙いでした。１時間ほどルアーを投げ続けても何も釣れなかったので、私は彼に「何か釣れましたか？」と尋ねました。すると「エサ取りばっか」とのこと。そして、私がヒラマサを狙っていたことを知ると、「もう少し海が荒れちょらんと釣れんわ」と言って慰めてくれました。私はその後、水中カメラでイソギンチャクの写真を撮ったりしました。）

(No. 772) No Fish at Gotton in Nonami (野波のゴットンにて釣果なし)

I was already exhausted when I reached Gotton about 6 a.m. this morning. Originally I intended to go to Saruwatari, but I found a car already left at the parking space for it when I arrived about 5 a.m. I drove past the parking space and headed for Safuki-bana. I found Safuki-bana was empty, but somehow I got reluctant to climb down there. Probably I didn't want to get too tired. So I drove past it, too. I decided to try Gotton, the least exhausting one among the three fishing spots. I hoped I wouldn't get too tired at Gotton, but it turned out miscalculation. The path toward Gotton was very overgrown with weeds, some of which were dangerously thorny, and I couldn't help cutting all of them. As a result, it took me one hour just to reach Gotton, and I was already exhausted when I reached it.

（今朝６時頃、ゴットンに到達した時にはすでに疲れ切っていました。当初は猿渡に行くつもりでしたが、午前５時頃にその駐車スペースに到着してみると、既に車が駐めてあったのです。私は、駐車スペースを通り過ぎて、サフキ鼻に向かいました。サフキ鼻は空いていたものの、なぜか降りて行くのが億劫になりました。おそらく、あまり疲れたくなかったのでしょう。なので、そこも通り過ぎたのです。私は、これら３つの釣り場の中では最も疲れないゴットンに行ってみることにしました。ゴットンならあまり疲れないだろうと期待していたものの、それは誤算でした。ゴットンに向かう小道には雑草が生い茂り、中には危険な棘のあるものもあったので、全部、刈ってしまわざるを得なかったのです。その結果、ゴットンに到達するだけで１時間もかかってしまい、その時には、もうヘロヘロになっていたのでした。）

(No. 771) No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なし)

Since I caught the Japanese sea bass on CCW’s Classic Danny the other day, I have been to the lake several times. I have been there with eager anticipation and unshakable belief that the so-called “Konoshiro-pattern” had begun in earnest. The “Konoshiro-pattern” means a short period of time during which huge Japanese sea bass at the lake aggressively chase konosirus punctatus, a relatively bigger baitfish. However, my big plugs have not produced any results since then. I wonder if the “Konoshiro-pattern” has not yet started.

（先日、CCWのクラシック・ダニーでスズキを釣って以来、私は何度か湖に足を運びました。大いなる期待と、いわゆる「コノシロ・パターン」が本格的に始まったのだという確信を抱いて。「コノシロ・パターン」とは、湖にいる巨大なスズキが、比較的大きなベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）であるコノシロを積極的に追いかけ回す短い期間を意味します。ところが、私の大型プラグでは、あれ以来、全く結果が出ていません。まだ「コノシロ・パターン」は始まっていないのでしょうか。）

(No. 770) Japanese Sea Bass at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてスズキ)

I just caught a Japanese sea bass of 70 cm (28 in.) long. I couldn’t throw the CCW Classic Danny very well. This type of plugs is not very easy to throw. It caused backlash on my PENN 320 GTi, and it took me for a while to untie the bird’s nest. Just several meters away from the shore, the plug stayed on the surface. However, as soon as I started retrieving the plug, the fish hit it! As soon as I successfully landed it, I took it to Mori-no-daidokoro, one of small grocery stores in my neighborhood. The fish will be served or go on sale at the store this evening at the earliest.

（たった今、70センチのスズキが釣れました。私はCCWのクラシック・ダニーを上手に投げられなかったのです。投げるのがそれほど簡単ではないタイプのプラグなのです。私のPENN 320 GTiはバックラッシュしてしまい、からまった釣り糸をほぐすのにしばらく時間がかかりました。岸からほんの数メートル離れたところで、プラグは水面に浮いていました。しかし、リトリーブを開始するや否や、すぐに魚がヒットしたのです！　無事に釣り上げるや否や、私は魚を、近所の小さな食料雑貨店「森の台所」に持ち込みました。この魚は、早ければ今日の夕方には、同店に並ぶことになります。）

(No. 769) Continuously No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて継続的に釣果なし)

I have been busy all day long today. In addition, the rain kept falling during the day. I was afraid I couldn’t find an opportunity to go to Lake Shinji, but the rain stopped temporarily when I was on my way back from a local supermarket in the afternoon. Taking advantage of the brief break between rains, I threw my favorite lures to the calm water of lake. The water was moderately clear under the overcast, and it started drizzling. The perfect stage for a splashy hit of the Japanese sea bass seemed set, but nothing disrupted the calmness of the lake.

（今日は一日中、忙しかったです。おまけに日中は雨が降り続いていました。宍道湖に行く機会はないのではないかと思っていましたが、午後、近所のスーパーからの帰り道、雨が一時的に止んだのです。雨の上がった短い合間を縫って、穏やかな湖面に向けてお気に入りのルアーを投げました。曇り空の下、湖水はほどよく澄んでいて、小雨が降ってきました。飛沫を上げてスズキがヒットする絶好の舞台が整ったと思ったものの、湖の静けさを乱すことは何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 768) Consecutively No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて引き続き釣果なし)

Today I went to Lake Shinji a total of four times, early in the morning, around noon, and early and late afternoon. I noticed the water getting more and more clearer over the course. The clearer the water got, the bigger my expectations got. A vicious strike from the Japanese sea bass seemed to happen at any moment. I was ready for the strike, but the fish didn’t respond to my lures. The so-called “Konoshiro-pattern” might not have started yet.

（今日は早朝、昼頃、午後早くと遅くの計４回、宍道湖に行ってきました。宍道湖の水がだんだんきれいになっていくのが分かりました。水が澄めば澄むほど、私の期待は大きくなりました。今にもシーバスからの獰猛なストライクがありそうでした。私はストライクに備えていましたが、魚が私のルアーに反応することはありませんでした。いわゆる「コノシロ・パターン」はまだ始まっていないのかもしれません。）

(No. 767) No Fish at Stormy and Muddy Lake Shinji (荒れ狂って泥のような宍道湖にて釣果なし)

Since I saw the needlefish chasing one of my Roberts lures, I have been to Lake Shinji a few times. I have been there with least expectations because the strong wind had created white-topped waves and changed the color of the water into brown. Worrying about whether and where the fish could take shelter from such a stormy muddy water, I kept throwing my lures. 

（ロバーツのルアーを追いかけるダツを見て以来、私は何度か宍道湖に行きました。私はほとんど期待していませんでした。なぜなら、強風で白波が立ち、水の色は茶色に変わっていたからです。こんなにも荒れて濁った水の中で、魚は避難できるのだろうか、もしそうならどこに避難するのだろうと心配しながら、ルアーを投げ続けました。）

(No. 766) Needlefish Chasing Lure at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてダツがルアーを追う)

This is today’s second post. This afternoon I noticed a few fishing boats floating around Yomega-shima, a small island in Lake Shinji. I instantly realized they were for the Japanese sea bass. Finally, the fish had migrated into the lake. I took out only Roberts Whistler and threw it toward the direction of Yomega-shima. The Japanese sea bass didn’t respond to it, but one needlefish chased the lure until it got close enough to the shore for the fish to realize I was maneuvering the lure. The fish made a U-turn and swam away in a panic.

（これは本日２回目の投稿です。今日の午後、宍道湖に浮かぶ小さな島、嫁ヶ島の周辺に数隻の釣り船が浮かんでいることに気づきました。スズキを狙う船であることが、すぐに分かりました。ついにスズキが湖にやってきたのです。私はロバーツ・ホイッスラーだけを持ち出して、嫁ヶ島の方角に向かって投げました。スズキからの反応はありませんでしたが、１匹のダツが追いかけてきて、岸近くまで来てやっと、ルアーを操作している私に気付きました。すると大慌てでUターンし、逃げていったのでした。）

(No. 765) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

After quitting today’s fishing in vain as usual, I decided to conclude that many dolphins, a few of whom I had observed at Uppurui-bana the other day, had been swimming for some time along the shore of the Shimane Peninsula. There was absolutely no fish, whether baitfish or predators, in the sea this morning. Such emptiness was not rare, but this morning I felt I was able to detect fish’s fear of dolphins.

（今日の釣りをいつものように成果なく終えた私は、十六島鼻で先日、そのうちの数頭を目撃したイルカたちが、ここしばらく島根半島の海岸を泳いでいるに違いないと結論づけることにしたのです。今朝の海には、ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）にせよ肉食魚にせよ、まったく魚がいませんでした。それは珍しくはないものの、しかし今朝は、魚たちのイルカに対する恐怖を、察することができる気がしたのです。）

(No. 764) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

The rainy season in Japan, which is called "Tsuyu" in Japanese, officially started in the Chugoku district 3 days ago. It was almost 3 weeks earlier than usual. This morning I was standing at the tip of Maruiwa in Owashi. Probably due to Tsuyu, the sky was uniformly overcast. I felt as if I had wandered into another world that consists of only three colors; gray (sky and sea), black (rocks), and dark green (plants). 

（「梅雨」と呼ばれる日本の雨期が、中国地方では３日前、正式に始まりました。例年よりも３週間近く早い梅雨入りです。今朝、私は大芦の丸岩の先端に立っていました。おそらく梅雨のせいなのでしょう、空は一様に曇っていました。灰色（空と海）、黒（岩）、深緑（植物）の３色だけで構成された別世界に迷い込んだような気分でした。）

(No. 763) Cutting Weeds for Safuki-bana in Nonami and Wild Strawberry (野波のサフキ鼻のための草刈りと野いちご)

As soon as I left the parking space for Safuki-bana and started to climb down the path in the woods, one of Guns N' Roses’ greatest hits stated to blare out in my mind. It was as if the woods were singing, “Welcome to the jungle!” I was amazed again how fast the plants could grow at this time of the year. When I reached Safuki-bana, I found the sea almost glassy calm this morning as it had been yesterday. It was so calm that I was able to go farther beyond Safuki-bana without any difficulty. It was unseasonably hot, too. It became so hot soon that I was tempted to jump in the sea.

（サフキ鼻へ行くための駐車場を出て、林中の小道を降り始めた瞬間、ガンズ・アンド・ローゼズのヒット曲の一つが、頭の中で鳴り響き始めました。まるで、林の木々が "Welcome to the jungle!”と歌っているかのようでした。私は、この時期の植物の成長の早さに改めて驚かされたのです。サフキ鼻に到着してみると、昨日に引き続き、今朝も海は、鏡のように穏やかでした。あまりにも穏やかだったので、サフキ鼻を超えて、その先に行くことも難なくできました。季節外れの暑さでもありました。すぐに、海に飛び込みたくなるほどの暑さになってしまいました。）

I didn’t feel I could catch any fish at all. So I quit fishing earlier than usual (However, the calmness might be good for catching squids. A pair of squid fishermen arrived at Safuki-bana after I passed through it for the farther spot, and I found later they were catching some squids). Instead of fishing, I decide to enjoy cutting weeds along the path. I had left a pair of shears in my car, so first I had to return to the car. Only returning to my car made me exhausted, but I didn’t change my mind. I started cutting weeds. In particular, I paid careful attention to two types of thorny weeds. They are not only irritating. They really hurt. I cut the weeds all the way down to the rocky shore. Running out of water and food during the course, I picked wild strawberries. They gave me enough energy to complete the mission and safely climb back to my car.

（魚は全く釣れる気がしませんでした。なので、いつもよりも早く納竿しました〔とはいえ、この穏やかさはイカを釣るのには適していたのかもしれません。より遠くの釣り場を目指して私がサフキ鼻を通過した後、２人のイカ釣り師がサフキ鼻に到着し、その後、イカが釣れていたことが分かったのです〕。私は、釣りではなく、小道沿いの草刈りを楽しむことにしました。草刈りハサミを車に置いてきたので、まずは車に戻る必要がありました。そして、車に戻ってきただけでヘトヘトになりましたが、私の気持ちは変わりませんでした。雑草を刈り始めました。特に注意したのは、棘のある２種類の雑草です。イライラさせられるだけでなく、本当に痛いのです。私はついに磯際まで降り、すべての雑草を刈りました。途中、水も食料もなくなってしまったので、野イチゴを摘みました。この任務を遂行し、無事に車に戻るためのエネルギー源になりました。）
