(No. 842) Consecutively No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて引き続き釣果なし)

I started throwing my lures about 7 a.m. this morning. The sea was much calmer than yesterday. Occasionally a bevy of baitfish caused ripples on the water. Other than that, the surface remained too quiet. Too peaceful. One fishing boat cruised inshore, and I saw two lure fishermen on it throwing lures. As long as I could see, they were also out of luck.

（今朝は午前７時頃からルアーを投げ始めました。海は昨日よりもずっと穏やかでした。時折、ベイトフィッシュの群れが水面に波紋を起こしていました。その時を除けば、海面はあまりにも静かでした。あまりにも平和でした。一艘の漁船が沿岸を巡航しており、二人のルアー釣り師が乗っていて、ルアーを投げているのが見えました。私が見ている限りでは、彼らも運に恵まれていませんでした。）

(No. 841) Silverware Festival at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて銀器祭り)

I like spoons much more than jigs. When you use jigs, you need to move them. If you just reel them in, the jigs don’t move very much. On the other hand, spoons move by themselves. All you have to do is just reel them in, and the spoons move livelily. In addition, most spoons are made from metal other than lead. Led is bad for nature. So I prefer spoons and have few jigs. This morning I held “Silverware Festival” at Saruwatari in Nonami. The lures that I carried this morning were only spoons or spoon-like silver lures. They are so shiny that they would mingle easily with real spoons and forks on display at any store. They were just too shiny this morning for the yellowtail amberjack.

（私はジグよりもスプーンの方が好きです。ジグを使うときは、ジグを動かさないといけません。ただ巻いているだけでは、ジグはあまり動かないのです。一方で、スプーンは勝手に動いてくれます。ただリールを巻いているだけで、スプーンは生き生きと動くのです。また、ほとんどのスプーンは鉛以外の金属でできています。鉛は自然に悪いのです。だから私はスプーンが好きで、ジグはほとんど持っていません。今朝は野波の猿渡で「銀器祭り」を催しました。今朝持っていったルアーは、スプーンかスプーンに似た銀色のルアーだけだったのです。どこかの店に陳列されている本物のスプーンやフォークに混じっていてもおかしくない輝きです。ただ、今朝のヒラマサには、ちょっと眩しすぎたようです。）

(No. 840) No Fish at Tachigamo in Miho (美保の立ちがもにて釣果なし)

Unlike previous two mornings, I successfully woke up early enough this morning. It was at 5 a.m. that I got out of my bed. I decided to try Tachigamo in Miho, instead of nearer fishing spots such as Saruwatari in Nonami. It was about 6 a.m. that I arrived at the parking space for Tachigamo. No other car was parked there. I was the first. After climbing up and down the steep hill, the blue ocean came into view. I got instantly excited because I saw some ripples on the surface. That's the sign of baitfish. However, my excitement was steadily dying down as I kept throwing my lures. The sea was too calm, and the current was barely moving. Those baitfish were just having a peaceful good time on the surface. I texted Shun-san, who is one of my fishing buddies, and found he was fishing at Ohtoko-bana in Miho. Not only Tachigamo but also Ohtoko-bana didn't seem very productive this morning.

（過去２回の朝と異なり、今朝は十分な早起きができました。布団から出たのは午前５時でした。私は、野波の猿渡など近場の釣り場ではなく、美保の立ちがもに行ってみることにしました。立ちがもの駐車スペースに着いたのは午前６時頃でした。他の車は一台も停まっていません。私が一番乗りです。険しい丘を登り降りすると、青い海が視界に入りました。海面にさざ波が立っているのが見え、一気に興奮しました。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）がいる証拠なのです。しかし、ルアーを投げ続けているうちに、その興奮はどんどん冷めていきました。海はあまりにも穏やかで、潮もほとんど動いていません。ベイトフィッシュたちは、ただ穏やかに、水面で楽しい時間を過ごしているのです。釣り友達のShunさんにメールしてみると、美保の大床鼻で釣りをしているとのこと。立ちがもだけでなく大床鼻も、今朝はあまり良くないようでした。）

(No. 839) Consecutively No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて引き続き釣果なし)

I didn’t wake up early enough this morning, either. I suppose it was an effect of an exciting event I had participated in yesterday. The event was about recently published translation of Yuki Onna (snow lady) written by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo). As a part of his Kwaidan (ghost story) collection, Yuki Onna was originally written in English. Then, the short story was translated into the standard Japanese. The interested locals including myself recently translated the standard Japanese into our dialect, Izumo-ben. The yesterday’s event was so successful that I kept thinking about the translation after it was over. Probably I had used my brain so much that it needed much longer rest than I had thought. So I couldn’t wake up early enough this morning, but still Saruwatari was vacant. All the other fishing spots, such as Maruiwa in Owashi, seemed very crowded, but somehow Saruwatari was vacant again. I started throwing my lures about 8 a.m. and kept doing so for about 1 hour. There were a few fishing boats with some lure fishermen on them. As far as I could see, not only I but also they were out of luck this morning.

（今朝も早起きができませんでした。昨日参加した刺激的なイベントの影響だと思います。そのイベントとは、最近出版された小泉八雲（ラフカディオ・ハーン）の「雪女」の翻訳に関するものでした。『怪談』に収録されている「雪女」は元々は英語で書かれたものです。それが後に日本の標準語に翻訳されました。この度、私を含めた地元の有志が、その標準語を、私たちの方言である「出雲弁」に翻訳したのです。このイベントはとても盛況だったので、イベントが終わった後も私は、この翻訳のことを考え続けていました。おそらく私は脳を使い過ぎてしまい、思っていた以上に長い休息が必要だったのでしょう。ですので、今朝は早起きできませんでしたが、それでも猿渡は空いていました。大芦の丸岩など、他の釣り場はどこもとても混んでいるのに、なぜか猿渡はまた空いていたのです。私は８時頃からルアーを投げ始め、だいたい１時間ほど粘りました。ルアー釣り師が乗った釣り船が数隻ありました。私が見た限りでは、私だけではなく彼らもまた、今朝は運に恵まれなかったようです。）

(No. 838) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

I stayed up so late last night that I couldn’t wake up early enough this morning. I had participated in an experimental event called “Hitsudan Bar” at NU, one of the famous music-oriented bars in Matsue City. “Hitsudan” means communication through writing. During the event, you were able to do whatever you normally do at a bar except for speaking. In order to communicate with the bartender and other bar-goers, you have to write a note on paper. “Hitsudan Bar” was so fun that I stayed up so late at night. So when I arrived at Saruwatari in Nonami this morning, it was already past 8 a.m. The sea was moderately choppy, and the current seemed moving slightly faster than usual. I felt a vicious strike from the yellowtail amberjack could happen at any moment, but nothing happened until I left the fishing spot about 9 a.m.

（昨夜は遅くまで起きていたので、今朝は早起きができませんでした。松江市の有名な音楽系バー「NU」で「筆談バー」という実験的なイベントに参加していたのです。「筆談」とは、文字を書いて意思を伝え合うことを意味します。このイベントでは、バーで通常行われることは何でも行っていいのですが、話すことだけはできません。バーテンダーや他のお客さんとコミュニケーションを取るには、紙にメモを書かねばならないのです。この「筆談バー」があまりにも楽しかったので、夜ふかしをしてしまったのでした。そんなわけで、今朝、野波の猿渡に到着した時には、既に午前８時を過ぎていました。海は適度に波立ち、潮もいつもよりやや速く動いているように見えました。いつヒラマサが襲ってきてもおかしくない感じでしたが、午前９時頃に釣り場を離れるまでの間、何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 837) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

I was a bit nervous this morning when I was about to climb over a rocky hill in order to reach Maruiwa, a fishing spot just east of Susumi-hana. I was concerned that I would see something similar as I had seen yesterday. Indeed, I saw a small fishing boat with one professional fisherman on it as I had seen yesterday, but what he was doing was different from yesterday. He was picking up turban shells from the bottom of the sea. As for my fishing, it was the same as yesterday. The sea was very calm and clear. There were plenty of baitfish and small fish. But no predatory fish attacked my lures.

（今朝、須々海鼻の東隣の釣り場である丸岩に行くため、岩山を乗り越えようとしていた私は、少し緊張していました。昨日と同じような光景を目にするのではないかと心配していたのです。確かに、昨日と同じように小さな漁船に一人の漁師さんが乗っていたのですが、彼がやっていることは昨日とは違っていました。漁師さんは海底からサザエを拾っていたのです。私の釣りについて言えば、昨日と同じでした。海はとても穏やかで澄んでいました。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）や小型魚がたくさんいました。しかし、私のルアーを襲ってくる捕食魚はいませんでした。）

(No. 836) No Fish at Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の須々海鼻にて釣果なし)

The quiet vast ocean came into view when I climbed over one of rocks in order to reach Susumi-hana. There was one small fishing boat floating with a professional fisherman on it. The boat was just several feet away from the tip of Susumi-hana. Heavily awkward silence instantly dominated the scene. With his back to me, the fisherman was standing on the boat. He was taking a pee toward the calm ocean. Obviously he hadn’t expected anyone to suddenly appear from the behind of the rock and to quietly watch him peeing. I was at a loss what to do next. So I just yelled at him cheerfully, “Good morning!” He finally became aware of me, but he didn’t say anything. He just pulled up a pair of suspenders, started the engine of the boat, and was gone to infinity and beyond. Fish must have been gone with him. I was left alone with an empty sea.

（須々海鼻に行くために岩を乗り越えると、静かな大海原が視界に飛び込んできました。そこには、一人の漁師さんが乗った小さな漁船が一隻、浮かんでいたのでした。漁船は、須々海鼻の先端からわずか数フィートのところに浮かんでいました。ひどく気まずい沈黙が、即座に場を支配しました。その漁師さんは、私に背を向けて漁船の上に立っていました。穏やかな海に向かって、小便をしているのです。まさか岩陰から誰かが突然現れて、おしっこ姿の自分を静かに見守っているとは思ってもいなかったことでしょう。私はどうしたらよいか分かりませんでした。そこで私は「おはようございます！」と元気よく叫んでみたのです。漁師さんはようやく私に気づいたものの、何も言いませんでした。ただサスペンダーを引き上げて、漁船のエンジンをかけ、無限の彼方へと去っていきました。魚も一緒に去っていったに違いありません。私には、何もない海が残されました。）

(No. 835) No Fish at Nameless Breakwater in Owashi Harbor, Mitsu Harbor, and Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (大芦港の名のない波止、御津港、そして恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

Now baitfish seem plenty along the shore of the Shimane Peninsula. Almost all the fishing spots seemed occupied this early afternoon when I started fishing. I had no option but to try the nameless breakwater in Owashi Harbor first. Baitfish were around there too, but nothing happened to my big plugs. It was obvious that the size of my plugs were much larger than that of baitfish. I might have caught some fish if I had used smaller plugs, but I don’t like to do so just because smaller lures may improve the probability of catching fish. So I kept throwing my big plugs. Or I should say, that’s all I could do because I carried only big plugs as usual. After giving up the nameless breakwater, I went to Mitsu Harbor and then Nanbo in Etomo Harbor. I saw plenty of fishermen as well as plenty of baitfish, but no lure fisherman caught any fish as far as I could see.

（現在、島根半島沿岸にはベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）がたくさんいるようです。私が釣りを始めた昼下がりには、ほとんどの釣り場が埋まっているようでした。仕方なく私は、大芦港の名もない防波堤をまず試すことにしました。そこにもベイトフィッシュはいましたが、私の大型プラグには何も起きませんでした。私のプラグのサイズがベイトフィッシュのサイズよりもはるかに大きいことは明白でした。もっと小さいプラグを使えば何か魚が釣れたかもしれないのですが、小さいルアーの方が釣れる確率が高いからといって、そういうことはしたくないのです。だから私は大きなプラグを投げ続けました。というか、いつもと同様、大きなプラグしか持っていなかったので、それしかできなかったのです。私は名もなき防波堤をあきらめると、御津港を経て、恵曇港の南防へと行きました。たくさんの釣り人とたくさんのベイトフィッシュを見ましたが、見渡す限り、ルアーで魚が釣れている人はいませんでした。）
