(No. 1421) No Fish at Lake Shinji, Weed Cutting for Safuki-bana in Nonami, and No Fish at Kaka Harbor (宍道湖にて釣果なし、野波のサフキ鼻のために草刈り、そして加賀港にて釣果なし)

“Are we already living in the future without knowing we are doing so?” Sometimes I wonder on the shore of Lake Shinji. Some people have been concerned that a lot of species will be rare or even extinct in the future. We like to say, "It might happen in the future but it has not yet happened." But, what if it has already begun? What if that’s the reason why I don’t get any response from the Japanese sea bass in Lake Shinji this year? I hope we are not yet living in the future, but I am getting pessimistic by the day. When I get depressed, I want to do exhausting physical exercise. Physical exercise takes my mind off negative things. So I went to Nonami in order to maintain the path in the woods. I cut thorny dangerous weeds and removed obstructing thick branches along the path to Safuki-bana. With the help from the sweetness of red wild strawberries, I cut all of them without suffering heat stroke. Then I did some fishing at Kaka Harbor on my way back, using my most recent favorite tackle, Omoto VS-10 reel and Goture 7.6’ catfish grass rod. Nothing happened in the sea, either. Someone, please tell me the future has not yet arrived.

（「私たちは、知らず知らずのうちに、もう未来に生きているのだろうか？」宍道湖畔に立ち、私は時々、そう考えるのです。将来、多くの生物種が希少種になったり、絶滅したりするのではないかと、心配している人たちがいます。そして私たちは、こう考えるのが好きです。「たしかに将来はそうなるかもしれないけれど、今はまだそれは起きていないよ」と。しかし、もしも、既にそれが始まっているのだとしたら？　もしも、それこそが、今年、宍道湖で私に、スズキからの反応がまったくない理由だとしたら？　まだ未来に生きていなければいいのに、と願ってはいるものの、私は日を追うごとに悲観的になっていきます。そんなふうに落ち込んだ時、私は激しい運動をしたくなります。運動をすれば、ネガティブなことを忘れられるからです。私は、林の中の小道を整備するため、野波へ行きました。サフキ鼻へと続く小道に沿って、棘のある危険な雑草を刈り、邪魔な太い枝を取り除いたのです。赤い野イチゴの甘さのおかげで、熱中症になることなく、すべて刈り終えることができました。帰り道、加賀港で釣りをしました。最近のお気に入りタックル、オモトVS-10リールとゴチュールの7.6フィート・ナマズ用グラスロッドを使いました。しかし海でもやはり、何も起きませんでした。誰か、未来はまだ来ていないのだ、と言ってください。）

(No. 1420) No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なし)

I have been to Lake Shinji several times since my last post. No Japanese sea bass responded to my lures. I only got some needlefish chasing my lures. I have no concern about my poor fishing. That’s very usual. What I am slightly concerned about is that there seem fewer fishermen on the shore of the lake. Did some of old-timers finally retire from fishing due to an advanced age? Or does it simply reflect the assumed fact that there are much fewer fish in the lake due to some reasons, such as global warming or agricultural chemicals? Anyway, I cannot feel very cheerful now.

（前回の投稿以来、宍道湖に何度か足を運びました。しかし、スズキは私のルアーに全く反応せず、ルアーを追いかけてきたのはダツだけでした。私は釣果の悪さは気にしていません。それは、いつものことなのです。私が少し気になるのは、湖畔に立つ釣り人の数が減っているように見えることです。ベテラン釣り師たちが、高齢のため、ついに釣りから引退したのでしょうか？　それとも、地球温暖化や農薬などの影響で、湖にいる魚の数が減ってしまったという仮説を反映しているだけなのでしょうか？　いずれにしても、あまり良い気分ではないですね。）

(No. 1419) Keep Your Guitar Case Open, Then… (ギターケースを開けたままにしておくと…)

Since my last post I have primarily used Hopkins and Gator Casting Spoons, both of which are equipped with the “tube” hooks. Neither of them has produced a strike so far. So I have just enjoyed throwing lures toward the vast surface of Lake Shinji. I have also enjoyed occasional interactions with people having good time by the lakeside. When a tourist talked to me this evening, I appointed myself as a tourism ambassador and told her a nice short story of the lake. When I found a group of one young man and two young women bashfully playing one of Spitz songs, I asked them if they had a guitar case with them. They said, “Yes,” but the case was closed. So I said, “Keep the guitar case open while you are playing, then someone might drop a tip in it.” As soon as they opened the case, I dropped two coins in it. “Great song! Keep it up!”

(No. 1418) My Potentially Last Secret Weapon: Tubes (私の最後の秘密兵器は、もしかしたらチューブ)

Some U.S. spoons or jigs, such as Hopkins, have their long bent hooks through longer color tubes. I have rarely used such type of hooks. I don’t know why. I have not been very interested in them. But now I am thinking those spoons might be effective in catching the Japanese sea bass in Lake Shinji or Lake Nakaumi. Because all the other lures I have used so far for the fish are ineffective; Whatever lure I use, I have not been able to entice the fish into attacking the lure this year. I hope the tube would make a difference.

(No. 1417) Cutting Weeds, Touching Base with Storekeeper, and Re-painting Signboard (雑草を刈り、商店主にご挨拶し、看板を塗り直す)

Japan is in the so-called “Golden Week,” a series of national holidays from April 29 to May 6. In addition, the weather was very fine today. I was sure that all fishing spots were crowded. So I didn’t go fishing today. Instead, I cut weeds along the path toward Ikesu in Etomo, talked to the storekeeper of the little grocery store in Tayu village, and re-painted faded letters on the signboard I had set up last year for Kurauchi Bay. I love fishing so much that I can get satisfied by only thinking someone is enjoying fishing right now somewhere in the world.

（日本は今、４月29日から５月６日までの連休、いわゆるゴールデン・ウィークの真っ最中なのです。しかも今日は天気がとても良い。どの釣り場も混雑しているだろうと思った私は、今日は釣りには行きませんでした。代わりに、恵曇の生須へ向かう小道沿いの雑草を刈ったり、手結集落の小さな食料品店の店主に会いに行ったり、去年、倉内湾のために設置した看板の文字が薄れていたので塗り直したりしました。私は釣りが大好きなので、世界のどこかで誰かが今、この瞬間にも釣りを楽しんでいるのだと思うだけで、満足できるのです。）

(No. 1416) The more seals, the less beautiful (シールが多ければ多いほど、美しくなくなります)

It’s raining, and I cannot go fishing, so I like to write about why my reels don’t have to be “water resistant.” But before that, I briefly mention my “shinsho” book club that I originally reported on No. 1403. The inaugural event of the book club was successfully held at Awaido in Izumo City on April 24th. 14 people, much more than I had anticipated, participated in it. If interested, though it’s all in Japanese, please check the dedicated website… Now let’s get back to the today’s topic, the “water resistance” in reels. As you may know, modern “advanced” spinning reels use a lot of seals, gaskets, or some gimmicks, boasting how “water resistant” they are. I used to own and love the original PENN Torque spinning reels, which were launched in 2011 as “fully-sealed” reels, but now I feel I don’t need any seals in my reels especially after I used the PENN 706z spinning reel, which is much older than the Torque series. Because I thoroughly wash my reels down with plenty of fresh water to rinse off salt or any elements after every use of them. Sometimes I even immerse them in a bucket of fresh water and reel them in it. Then, I just put a small amount of oil at a few spots of reels after they dry out.

（雨が降っていて釣りに行けないので、今日は、私のリールには「防水性」が必要ない理由について書きたいと思います。しかし、その前に、No. 1403でご紹介した「新書」読書会について、簡単に触れておきます。この読書会の最初のイベントが、４月24日、出雲市の「あわい堂」で盛況のうちに開催されました。予想をはるかに上回る14名が参加してくださったのです。興味のある方は、そのウェブサイトをご覧ください（すべて日本語ですが…）。さて、今日のトピックであるリールの「防水性」に戻りましょう。ご存知のとおり、近年の「先進的な」スピニングリールは、シールやガスケット、あるいは何らかのギミックを用いた「防水性」を謳うものが多いです。私は以前、PENNのトルク・スピニングリールを愛用していました。これは「完全密閉」を謳って2011年に発売されたリールです。しかし今の私は、リールに防水性は必要ないと感じるようになっています。特に、PENN 706Z スピニングリール（トルクよりもずっと古い）を使ってからは、なおさらです。なぜなら私は、リールの使用後は必ず、たっぷりの真水でリールを洗い、塩分やその他の汚れを洗い流しているからです。時には、バケツに真水を入れてリールを沈め、その中でリールを巻くこともあります。そして乾いたら、リールの数カ所に少量のオイルを塗布するのです。）

That’s my routine after every fishing trip. I don’t think my reels will need any seals if I keep practicing this routine. If I became a too lazy fisherman to wash my reels down at every trip, I might need some seals, but now I am very happy in practicing this routine. From this perspective, I don’t agree with the approach that PENN has had for their Battle spinning reel series. In my opinion, PENN Battle spinning reels are excellent “budget” reels. They are sturdy, reliable, and workhorse. Currently I own the Battle 3 DX 6000 and love it. The Battle spinning reels are less expensive than other more “water-resistant” PENN reels partly because they have fewer seals. In 2024 PENN introduced the Battle 4 series, an “upgrade” from the Battle 3 series. I compared their schematics and concluded that the only significant difference between 3 and 4 is the number of seals. From my above-mentioned perspective, increasing the number of seals to make a reel more “water-resistant” is not necessarily an “upgrade.” Because the reel would lose its simplicity and might become less easier to be serviced. I would like to ask PENN not to add seals just for a change. The more seals a reel has, the less beautiful it gets. PENN used to know that.

（これが私の釣行後のルーティンになっています。このルーティンを続けている限り、私のリールにはシールは必要ないと思います。もしも私が怠け者になり、毎回リールを洗うのが面倒くさくなった時は、シールが必要になるかもしれません。しかし今の私は、このルーティンにとても満足しています。こうした点から考えると、PENNが、バトル・スピニングリール・シリーズで採用したアプローチに、私は賛同できません。バトルは優秀な「お手頃価格」リールだと思います。頑丈で信頼性が高く、まさに頼れる相棒です。現在、私はバトルIII DX 6000を所有しており、とても気に入っています。「防水性」のより高い他のPENNリールよりもバトルが安価なのは、シールの数が少ないことも一因だと思います。2024年、PENNは、バトルIIIシリーズからの「アップグレード」としてバトルⅣシリーズを発表しました。私は両者の展開図を比較し、IIIとⅣの唯一の大きな違いは、シールの数に過ぎないと結論付けました。前述した私の観点から見れば、シールの数を増やしてリールの「防水性」を高めることは、必ずしも「アップグレード」とは言えません。なぜなら、リールのシンプルさが失われて、メンテナンスがより容易でなくなる可能性があるからです。私はPENNにお願いしたいのです。どこか変化させなければいけないから、というだけの理由で、シールの数を増やすのはやめてほしいと。シールが増えれば増えるほど、美しさは失われます。かつてのPENNは、それを知っていたはずなのに。）
