(No. 1460) Casting Practice as Rehabilitation at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてリハビリとしてのキャスティング練習）

A week ago I felt the fresh marine water revived me physically. I was wrong. I got worse. It was the flu. I have been under the weather since my last post. Today I felt I had finally recovered enough. I felt I needed rehabilitation. So I went to Lake Shinji and did casting practice as my rehabilitation. The more I threw my lure, the stronger I felt. A group of three little girls talked to me. We had a nice chat. Then they started catching the gobies. Whenever they caught it, they dutiful yelled at me, "We caught it!" I yelled back, “Congrats!"

（１週間前、新鮮な海水のおかげで身体が元気になったと感じました。しかし、それは勘違いでした。体調は悪化しました。インフルエンザだったのです。前回の投稿以来、ずっと体調不良でした。今日ようやく回復した私は、リハビリが必要だと感じました。そこで、宍道湖へ行き、リハビリの一環としてキャスティング練習をしました。ルアーを投げれば投げるほど、どんどん力が満ちてくるように感じました。３人の少女たちが話しかけてきたので、楽しいおしゃべりをしました。そして彼女たちはハゼ釣りを始めました。ハゼが釣れるたびに、律儀に「釣れました！」と報告してくれるのでした。私も「おめでとう！」と叫び返しました。）

(No. 1459) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Sezaki Harbor, and No One at Seaside House in Sezaki (倉内湾と瀬崎港にて釣果なし、瀬崎の海辺の家にて人の姿なし）

I have been a bit under the weather since I got up this morning. I have no idea why. Did I go to the sea too many times this summer? Maybe. Did I pick the “bebe” shellfish too many times this summer? Probably. The only remedy I came up with was to take a rest. So this morning I went to the terrace of Matsue City Hall. I started reading books at the terrace under the warm sun. However, the more I read books, the more I felt tired. So I decided to take an opposite measure. I went to the sea again. There was a total of four fishermen around Kurauchi Bay. No one seemed to have caught anything. I couldn't throw my plugs many times because I was tired. So I jumped into the sea and just floated on the surface. I felt the fresh marine water somehow improved my physical conditions.

（今朝起きてからずっと、少し体調が優れません。理由は分かりません。私はこの夏、海に行き過ぎたのでしょうか？　たぶん。私はこの夏、ベベ貝を採り過ぎたのでしょうか？　おそらく。私が思いついた唯一の対策は、休憩を取ることでした。そこで今朝は、松江市役所のテラスに行ったのです。暖かい日差しのもと、私はテラスで本を読み始めました。しかし、本を読めば読むほど、私は疲れていくのです。そこで、全く逆の対策を取ることにしました。私は再び海へ行ったのです。倉内湾周辺には４人の釣り人がいました。誰も何も釣れていないようでした。疲れていた私は、そんなにルアーを投げることができませんでした。そこで、海に飛び込み、ただ水面に浮かんでみました。新鮮な海水のおかげで、なぜだか体調が良くなったように感じました。）

And, I went to Sezaki this afternoon, one of small fishing villages in the Shimane Peninsula. I rarely go to Sezaki, but today one of my friends was supposed to open a mysterious seaside house over there, and I have been invited. Meanwhile, my mother seemed bored in our house without anything to do other than video games, so I offered her a trip to the mysterious seaside house. She got intrigued. When we arrived at the house, there was completely no one inside. There was only very fun atmosphere. I left some snacks I had bought at one of convenience stores on the way, while my mother used the bathroom of the seaside house. Then, we walked down to Sezaki Harbor to throw one of my favorite plugs. It’s just for a photo op. If I didn't throw a lure at all, I would have nothing to write about for this blog. My mother cheerfully took the picture of my fishing.

（続いて今日の午後は、島根半島の小さな漁村の一つである瀬崎まで行きました。瀬崎にはめったに行かないのですが、今日は、友人が謎めいた海辺の家を開くことになっており、私は招待されていたのです。その一方で私の母は、自宅でビデオゲーム以外にすることがなく退屈している様子だったので、謎めいた海辺の家行きに誘ってみました。母は興味津々となりました。私たちは、海辺の家に着いたものの、中には全く誰もいないのでした。ただ、とても楽しい雰囲気だけが漂っているのでした。母が海辺の家のトイレを使わせてもらっている間に、私は、途中のコンビニで買ったお菓子を置いておきました。それから私たちは、瀬崎港まで降りて、お気に入りのプラグを投げました。これは写真撮影だけのためでした。だって、全くルアーを投げなかったら、このブログに書くことがなくなってしまいますからね。母は楽しそうに私の釣り写真を撮ってくれました。）

(No. 1458) No Fish at between Maruiwa and Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の丸岩と須々海鼻の間にて釣果なし)

According to a weekly fishing report on one of local newspapers, the yellowtail amberjacks have been around along the shore of Izumo City. Izumo City is adjacent to Matsue City, where I live. So I hoped the coveted fish were also around in the sea of my city, but it’s not the case at least this afternoon. I threw a few of my favorite lures from between Maruiwa and Susumi-hana in Owashi, but there was no fish in the sea as long as I could see. I got quickly bored, so I spent most of my time picking the “bebe” shellfish. Today’s ratio of fishing to shellfishing was probably 2:8. I have started an experiment about the shellfish. Can they be kept frozen in a refrigerator? Do they taste as good as when eaten on the same day they are picked? If the shellfish can be kept frozen, tourists can enjoy the unique taste of the Sanin Region not only in summer but also in winter.

（地元の新聞の週刊釣果報告によると、出雲市沿岸にヒラマサが出没しているとのこと。出雲市は私の住む松江市に隣接しているわけですから、私の住む街の海にも、あの憧れの魚がいるのではないかと期待したのですが、少なくとも今日の午後は、そうではありませんでした。大芦の丸岩と須々海鼻の間でお気に入りのルアーをいくつか投げましたが、見渡す限り、魚は一匹もいませんでした。私はすぐに飽きてしまい、ほとんどの時間をベベ貝採りに費やしました。釣りと貝採りの今日の比率は2：8ぐらいだったと思います。私はベベ貝について実験を始めています。果たしてベベ貝は、冷蔵庫で冷凍保存できるのでしょうか？　冷凍保存したものは、採ったその日に食べるのと同じくらい美味しいのでしょうか？　もしも、ベベ貝を冷凍保存できるのならば、観光客は、あの山陰地方特有の味覚を、夏だけでなく冬にも楽しむことができるのです。）

(No. 1457) No Fish but Big “Bebe” Shellfish at Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の須々海鼻にて釣果なしも、大きなベベ貝)

I went to the sea this afternoon. I didn’t think I would do fishing. I just wanted to see the view. According to the weather forecast, the waves were supposed to reach two-meter high today. But actually they were not so high. So I changed my mind and walked carefully to the tip of Susumi-hana. I had assigned myself a task. I would pick as many the “bebe” shellfish as possible for senior citizens in my neighborhood. The summer is ending, which means, the season for picking the shellfish is also ending. I had to take advantage of the shrinking window. I guess few people come all the way to the tip of Susumi-hana for the shellfish, so they are able to fully grow on unbothered rocks. They are much larger than those living in more easily accessible shores. I didn't spend much time throwing lures today. The ratio of fishing to shellfishing was probably 1:9. Afterwards I enjoyed swimming in Susumi Bay. I felt the first coldness of the sea in this summer.

（今日の午後、海に行きました。釣りをするつもりは、ありませんでした。私はただ、海の景色を見たかったのです。天気予報によると、波は２メートルの高さにまで及ぶはずでしたが、実際にはそれほど高くありませんでした。そこで計画を変更し、私は須々海鼻の先端まで慎重に歩いて行きました。近所のご高齢の皆さんのために、ベベ貝をできるだけたくさん採るという任務を自分に課していました。夏は終わりつつあります。ということは、貝採りのシーズンも終わりに近づいているということなのです。残り少ないチャンスを逃したくありませんでした。貝を採るためにわざわざ須々海鼻の先端まで行く人はほとんどいないと思うので、貝たちは邪魔されることなく岩の上で十分に成長しています。アクセスの容易な海岸に生息している貝よりも、ずっと大きいのでした。今日はルアーを投げる時間は、あまりありませんでした。釣りと貝採りの比率は1：9ぐらいでした。私はその後、須々海湾で泳ぎました。この夏初めて、海の冷たさを感じました。）

(No. 1456) No Fish with My First Shimano Spinning Reel in Many Years at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて何十年ぶりにシマノのスピニングリールを使って釣果なし)

First of all, let me talk about my latest second-hand spinning reel. It’s a Shimano! I don’t remember when is the last time I used a Shimano spinning reel. It’s a long long time ago, and I don’t even remember the model name of the reel. A few days ago I was browsing around in one of local tackle shops and found a second-hand 2021 Shimano Spheros SW-A 8000HG reel. In general, I am not interested in modern Japanese reels, but somehow I felt like holding it in my hand. The reel was on the farthest and least visited shelf in the shop, which might be why. The reel felt amazingly good. The next moment I was selling my two PENN Spinfisher 750SSMs to the shop in order to buy the Shimano.

（まず最初に、私の最新の中古スピニングリールについて触れさせてください。なんとシマノ製なのです！　最後にシマノのスピニングリールを使ったのがいつだったか、覚えていません。それはもうずいぶん昔のことで、そのリールのモデル名すら覚えていません。数日前、近所の釣具店をぶらぶらしていたところ、中古の21年型シマノ・スフェロス SW 8000HGリールを見つけたのです。私は通常、日本のモダンなリールにはあま​​り興味がないのですが、その時は、なぜか手に取ってみたくなりました。そのリールが、店の一番奥の、あまり人が訪れない棚に置いてあったせいかもしれません。そして、その感触は驚くほど良かったのです。次の瞬間、私はそのシマノを買うために、私の２台のPENNスピンフィッシャー750SSMをその店に売っていました。）

My impulse-buy might have been influenced by Mr. Alan Hawk, who I believe is the most sincere and thorough reel critic in the world. His reviews of the 2021 Spheros SW-A and the 2020 Saragosa SW-A are very good read as well as his other reviews. This morning I was very happy with my Spheros at Maruiwa in Owashi although no fish responded. Now I have to be careful not to hold another Shimano spinning reel in my hand because, to my surprise, the Spheros reels are the lowest-end model in all Shimano saltwater spinning reels. The Spheros is more than enough for me. Please don’t make me feel how much better their upper models are. I am afraid I would pay too much money for a reel. I am afraid I would do another impulse-buy.
