(No. 59) Missed Japanese Sea Bass at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてスズキを逃がす)

My main weapon for this evening was Gibbs Danny Surface Swimmer. I have read an article somewhere saying it is one of the strongest lures when you are sure fish are around. I am sure plenty of Japanese sea bass are swimming in Lake Shinji now. So I used this legendary wooden plug intensively.
（今夕の私の主武器は、ギブズのダニー・サーフェススイマーでした。どこかで読んだ記事に書いてあったのですが、魚がいることが確実な時、このルアーは最強のルアーの一つなのだそうです。今、宍道湖では、確実にたくさんのスズキが泳いでいます。ですから私は、この伝説的な木製ルアーを集中的に使ってみたのでした。）
It didn’t take long for me to prove the article was right. A nice Japanese sea bass attacked the lure soon after I started fishing, but the fish jumped out of the water and the hook came out. I was not very disappointed because I saw the fish leap into the air against the setting sun of Lake Shinji. Of course, it was beautiful.

（記事の正しさを証明するのに、長くはかかりませんでした。釣り始めてすぐに、良い型のスズキがルアーを襲ったのです。しかし、魚が水面からジャンプすると、針がはずれてしまいました。私はそれほど残念ではありませんでした。なぜなら、宍道湖の夕日を背景にして宙に舞う魚を見たからです。もちろんそれは、美しい眺めでした。）

(No. 58) Big Japanese Sea Bass at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて大きなスズキ)

I started fishing around 5 p.m. today. Nothing happened for two hours and a half, but I didn’t lose my concentration at all. I kept casting my big American lures with eager anticipation. When the night fell finally, I ordered myself to call it a day after three more casts. With the first and the second casts, nothing happened. It was the same quiet water.

（今日は午後５時から釣り始めました。何も起きないまま２時間半が経過しましたが、私はまったく集中力を失いませんでした。期待を胸に秘めたまま、私はアメリカの大きなルアーを投げ続けたのです。ついに夜のとばりが下り、私は「あと３投で終わりにしよう」と自分に言い聞かせました。その１投目と２投目では、何も起きませんでした。相変わらず静かな湖でした。）
With the third cast, a big fish smashed my Northbar Flying Squid. I had moved this pencil popper the way surf fishermen in and around New York do, which means I shook my rod vigorously while pinching the line with my thumb and index finger. This method allows the lure to keep shaking its head very noisily from side to side. I don’t remember if I saw Japanese fishermen use this method. I caught a Japanese sea bass measuring 80 cm (31.5 in.) long. It might have been entirely due to this method.

（しかし３投目、大きな魚が私のルアー、ノースバー・フライング・スクイッド（空飛ぶイカ）をひったくりました。私はこのペンシル・ポッパーを、ニューヨークとその周辺の岸釣り師がやる方法で動かしていました。つまり、親指と人差指でラインをはさみながら、激しく竿を揺さぶったのです。この方法を使えば、ルアーは大変騒々しく左右に首を振り続けます。日本でこの方法が用いられているのを見た記憶はありません。80センチのスズキが釣れました。それはひとえに、この方法のおかげだったのかもしれません。）

(No. 57) One Big Explosion at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて大きな爆発ひとつ)

I went to Lake Shinji again this evening to chase up the huge Japanese sea bass I missed yesterday. I started casting a Line Stretcher’s Surface Tension topwater plug as soon as I arrived at the same place as yesterday. A few casts later, when I was about to pick up the lure from the surface at my feet, there was a big splash with a bang!

（昨日逃した巨大なスズキを追い求めて、今夕、私は再び宍道湖へ行きました。昨日と同じ場所に到着すると、ライン・ストレッチャーのサーフェス・テンションというトップウォーター・プラグを投げ始めました。２、３投後、足下まで引いてきたルアーを水面から引き上げようとした瞬間、バン！という音とともに盛大な水しぶきが上がりました。）

A big fish must have been chasing the lure. The fish finally decided to bite it because the lure was about to reach the shore, but unfortunately the fish missed it. I didn’t catch any fish both yesterday and today, but I got hooked on fishing at Lake Shinji in the evening.

（きっと、大きな魚がルアーを追いかけていたのです。ルアーが岸にたどり着いてしまうので、ついに魚は食いつくことにしたものの、残念ながら、食いつきそこねたのです。昨日も今日も魚は釣れませんでしたが、宍道湖での夕方の釣りに夢中になってしまいました。）

(No. 56) Missed Huge Japanese Sea Bass at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて巨大なスズキを逃がす)

I gave Lake Shinji a serious try this evening. I started fishing about 5 p.m. using some of my favorite lures that I think are most promising. More than one hour passed without any action, but when I was slowly retrieving Super Strike Zig Zag, something ferocious finally attacked it. Instantly I felt it was huge.

（今夕は宍道湖で真剣に釣ってみました。午後５時から釣り始め、いちばん有望だと思えるお気に入りのルアーを使っていきました。何も起きないまま１時間以上たちましたが、スーパーストライク・ジグザグをゆっくり引いている時、凶暴な何かが、ついにルアーを襲いました。すぐに大物だと分かりました。）

I used a 30lb braided line and the drag setting was not loose, but the fish made the drag screech for a few seconds and leaped into the air. I should have lowered the tip of my rod, but I was so stunned by the size of the fish that I kept the tip very high. The hook came out and the fish was gone. I saw the whole body of the Japanese sea bass in the air for an instant. The image was burned into my eyes.
（私のラインは30ポンドのPEラインですし、ドラグもゆるいわけではありません。でも、その魚は数秒間、ドラグを鳴らしたかと思うと、空中へとジャンプしました。竿先を下げておくべきでしたが、魚のサイズに呆然としていたため、竿先は高いままでした。針がはずれ、魚は消えました。ほんの一瞬、空中に浮かぶスズキの全身が見えました。その姿が目に焼き付いて離れません。）

(No. 55) No Fish but Swim in Kataku (片句にて釣果なしも海水浴)

At 5 a.m. I was the first to arrive at Takashiro-bana in Kataku. The sea was incredibly calm and stagnant, and the surface was almost complete flat. Another lure fisherman and a bait fisherman came later, but nobody caught any fish. I got so bored that I took underwater pictures of floating jellyfish and some small beautiful fish.

（午前５時、片句の高城鼻に一番乗りしました。海は信じられないくらい穏やかで、そして淀んでおり、水面はほとんど完全に平らです。その後、ルアー釣りの人がもう一人、そしてエサ釣りの人もいらっしゃいましたが、誰も何も釣れません。私は退屈し、浮遊するクラゲと美しい小魚の水中写真を撮りました。）

There was not much wind, either. By 8 a.m. it became uncomfortably hot. So I gave up fishing and went to Kurauchi Bay to the west of the Kataku hamlet. It was not to fish but to swim. Is it too early for swimming? I don’t think so. In Brooklyn, New York, I would start swimming by the end of May. The water at Kurauchi Bay was not cold at all. I swam alone with nobody around. I remember I love swimming as much as fishing.

（風もほとんど吹きません。８時までには不快なぐらい暑くなりました。そこで私は釣りをあきらめ、片句集落の西にある倉内湾へ行きました。釣りではなく泳ぐためです。海水浴には早過ぎるでしょうか？　そうは思いません。ニューヨークのブルックリンでは、私は５月末までには泳ぎ始めていたものです。倉内湾の水は全く冷たくありませんでした。誰もいない湾で一人、泳ぎました。私は、釣りが好きなのと同じくらい、泳ぐのも好きだったのでした。）

(No. 54) No Fish at Nazuna in Kataku (片句のナズナにて釣果なし)

It was 20 to 30 minutes after dawn when I visited Nazuna in Kataku again. There were already three fishermen around the area, who were using baits. There was no lure fisherman except me. Although it was early in the morning, which people think is more productive hours for lure fishing than in the evening, I didn’t catch any fish. The other fishermen didn’t catch either. Actually the condition of the water seemed the same as my last outing here in the evening of three days ago. So I gave up fishing early and went to Takashiro-bana, another fishing spot to the east of Nazuna, to take pictures of the Kataku hamlet.
（片句のナズナを再び訪れたのは、夜明けから20〜30分後のことでした。一帯には、既に３人の釣り人の姿があり、彼らはエサ釣りをしているのでした。ルアー釣りは私だけです。ルアー釣りの場合、夕方よりも早朝が良いと考えられており、私も早朝にルアーを投げたわけですが、魚は何も釣れません。他の釣り人にも釣れていません。実際のところ、海の状況は、３日前に訪れた夕刻と変わりがないようです。私は早々に釣りをあきらめ、ナズナの東にある別の釣り場、高城鼻へ行き、そこから片句集落の写真を撮ったのでした。）

(No. 53) No Fish at Nazuna in Kataku (片句のナズナにて釣果なし)

Today I was alone in the afternoon at Nazuna, one of rocky tips in Kataku. This is the first time that I have been here, and it is another stunning scenery. There was a lot of tiny baitfish along the shore, but I didn’t catch any fish. I kept casting lures for a few hours before sunset. I will definitely visit this place again and it must be early in the morning. They say fish around the Shimane Peninsula respond to lures much more vigorously in the morning.

（今日の午後は、片句にある磯の突端、ナズナで一人ぼっちでした。この場所を訪れたのは初めてで、そしてまたもや、ものすごい景色の場所なのでした。とても小さいベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）が岸沿いにたくさんいるのに、魚は何も釣れません。私は日没前の数時間、ルアーを投げ続けました。絶対にもう一度、この場所を訪れるつもりです。それは朝早くなくてはいけません。島根半島周辺の魚たちは、朝の方がルアーによく反応すると言われています。）

(No. 52) No Fish at between Koizu and Mitsu Harbors (小伊津港と三津港の間にて釣果なし)

This is the first time I have been to fishing spots between Koizu and Mitsu Harbors in Izumo City. You can park your car at the shoulder of the road along the beautiful coast. The road is broad enough. Fishing spots such as Ichinose, Igagurijima, and Hyojyugasima are immediately adjacent to the road. What an easy access! Partly because of it and partly because it is a Sunday, there were many fishermen there.

（出雲市の小伊津港と三津港の間に広がる釣り場に初めて行きました。美しい海岸沿いの道路の路肩に駐車します。十分に広い道路なのです。一の瀬、イガグリ島、そして兵十島といった釣り場が、道路のすぐ隣にあります。なんて簡単に行けるのでしょう！　そのおかげもあり、また今日が日曜日だということもあって、たくさんの釣り人の姿が見られます。）

Unfortunately, I didn’t see anybody catch any fish, and I was not an exception. Usually I am happy even if I don’t catch any fish. Because just getting to a fishing spot is often tough and that’s why it is fulfilling. It was a bit too easy today to be very happy.

（でも残念ながら、誰にも何も釣れなかったようです。私もまた例外ではありませんでした。いつもなら、たとえ魚が釣れなくても、私は幸せです。なぜなら、釣り場に到達すること自体が往々にして大変なので、充実感が得られるからです。でも今日はちょっと楽すぎて、それほど幸せではなかったのでした。）
