(No. 865) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Etomo Harbor (倉内湾そして恵曇港にて釣果なし)

I had to admit that the winter had arrived. When I got down to Kurauchi Bay this morning, I realized that I had miscalculated. It was unexpectedly chilly, and I wished I had bundled up. Kurauchi Bay was choppy, and I expected a Japanese sea bass to attack my lures, but nothing happened. Next I tried Etomo Harbor but didn’t stay there for a long time. It was so chilly that I had to come home and wear thick layers of clothing. Then I repeated the same fishing, first at Kurauchi Bay and then at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor. Although nothing happened that time either, I was able to keep standing at those chilly fishing spots comfortably.

（冬の到来を認めざるを得ませんでした。今朝、倉内湾に降り立ったとき、私は誤算に気づいたのです。予想外の肌寒さで、厚着をしてくればよかったと思いました。倉内湾は波立っていて、スズキがルアーを襲うのではないかと期待しましたが、何も起きませんでした。次に恵曇港を試しましたが、長くは留まりませんでした。あまりにも寒かったので、家に帰って服を着込みました。そして、まずは倉内湾、次に恵曇港の南防で、同じ釣りを繰り返しました。この時も何も起きませんでしたが、私は冷たい釣り場に快適に立ち続けることができました。）

(No. 864) My Errand Runner Who Has Greater Mission; Promoting Ramen Film “Come Back Anytime” (ラーメン映画「Come Back Anytime」を宣伝するという、より大きな使命を負った私の使者)

This post is about one of my old friends, Yamamo, who is visiting New York City now. He has been one of my colleagues in the publishing world and recently entered into the film industry. He is credited as producer of “Come Back Anytime,” a new documentary film directed by John Daschbach. The film is about one ramen restaurant in Tokyo, and I made a modest contribution to it as one of its translators. The film has been awarded at some international film festivals, and Yamamo is now busy promoting the film as well as doing Q&As after the screenings at DOC NYC, an annual documentary film festival in NYC. After completing his major mission in NYC, he plans to head north to Boston. So I asked him to do errands for me. His minor mission is to drop by one of fishing tackle shops during the trip and buy a few nice American-made lures for me. I didn’t and won’t give him very specific instructions about which lures he should buy. It would be a greater fun. (No. 863) Consecutively No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて引き続き釣果なし)

Yesterday I tried slow fishing with a very old conventional reel, the PENN Senator 2/0. This morning I tried faster fishing with a modern low-profile bait-casting reel, the Daiwa LEXA 400H, which I had recently bought at a second-hand market. The reel reminded me that I had used Ryobi Ixorne F300RF, a much smaller bait-casting reel, since 1998, and it was the only reel I had used since I started living in New York City in 2001. I had caught many striped bass, bluefish, and even a super powerful cownose ray once with that small bait-casting reel, which was originally designed for catching freshwater bass.

（昨日は、PENNセネター2/0という非常に古い両軸リールを用いて、遅い釣りを試みました。今朝は、最近中古市場で購入した近代的なベイトリール、ダイワのレクザ400Hを使って速い釣りを試しました。このリールを見た時、私は、リョービのイクシオーネF300RFという、ずっと小さなベイトリールを1998年から使っていたことを思い出しました。2001年にニューヨークに住み始めて以降、私はずっと、そのリールだけを使っていたのでした。元々は淡水のブラックバス用に設計されたその小さなベイトリールで私は、たくさんのストライプド・バスやブルーフィッシュ、そして一度などは超パワフルなクロガネウシバナトビエイも釣りました。）

My Ixorne finally broke in 2011. It wasn't due to accumulated damage caused by those powerful marine fish but due to my sheer carelessness. If my memory is correct, options of low-profile bait-casting reels for hardcore saltwater fishing were few on the market around 2011, so I bought the PENN Torque 5 spinning reel instead. The advancement of low-profile bait-casting reels surprised me when I held the LEXA 400H in my hand several days ago. It felt big and strong enough for the fishing that I do. Nothing happened this morning, but I hoped the reel would be tested very soon by the powerful yellowtail amberjack.

This autumn’s one and only strike from the yellowtail amberjack was delivered when I was using a pencil popper very slowly. So I experimentally slowed down my retrieve speed five days ago at Saruwatari. I used the PENN 210 conventional reel, whose gear ratio is 4:1. This morning I made it even slower, using the PENN Senator 2/0, whose gear ratio is 2.25:1. It’s kind of fun to throw a lure with the Senator, but retrieving the lure effectively was not very easy. Anyway, I did my best to enjoy it as much as possible, although nothing happened to my slowly-moving lures.

（この秋のヒラマサからの唯一のストライクは、ペンシル・ポッパーを非常にゆっくりと使った時に起きました。そこで私は５日前、猿渡で実験的にリトリーブスピードを遅くしてみたのです。使ったのはPENN 210という両軸リールで、そのギア比は4:1です。そして今朝は、ギア比が2.25:1であるPENNセネター2/0を使って、さらに遅くしてみました。セネターでルアーを投げるのは何だか楽しいのですが、ルアーを効率よくリトリーブするのは簡単ではありません。とはいえ私は、自分なりにがんばって、出来るだけ楽しみました。ゆっくり動くルアーに何も起きなかったとはいえ。）

(No. 861) Mysterious Electronic Device at Sakitaka-hana in Sanami (佐波の先高鼻にてミステリアスな電子機器)

It was as if the last weekend were repeating itself. Saruwatari was taken by another fisherman this morning. So I turned around and headed for Sanami Harbor. At Sakitaka-hana I met again one of the pair of very polite fishermen that I had met last weekend. Then something new and mysterious happened. A cube-like white object was floating on the surface. First I thought it was a portable radio because it seemed to have an antenna. I hooked the object with one of my lures and retrieved it. It was not a radio but some kind of electronic device. It had a sensor-like strip outside the cube. Other than the encounter with that mysterious white cube, everything felt the same as a week ago. On my way back to my car, one of the very polite fishermen said to me, “The current was not moving at all.” Both he and I were skunked. As soon as I came back home, I disassembled the cube. There were a rust battery and circuit board inside. What the heck is it?

（まるで先週末の出来事が繰り返されているかのようでした。今朝、猿渡は他の釣り人に取られてしまっていました。そこで私は引き返して、佐波港に向かいました。先高鼻では、先週末に出会ったとても礼儀正しい２人組みの釣り人のうちの一人と、再会しました。そして、不思議な、新しいことが起きたのです。海面に立方体のような白い物体が浮かんでいます。アンテナが付いているように見えたので、最初は携帯ラジオだと思いました。私はその物体をルアーでひっかけて回収しました。それはラジオではなく、何かの電子機器でした。センサーのようなものが立方体の外側に付いています。この不思議な白い立方体との遭遇を除けば、１週間前と何も変わらないように思えました。車に戻る途中、例の礼儀正しい釣り人が「潮が全然、動いてない」と言いました。彼も私も、完全にボウズでした。家に戻った私は、すぐに立方体を分解してみました。中には錆びた電池と電子基板が入っていました。いったいこれは何なのでしょう？）

(No. 860) Welcome Back!! Return of My Super Strike Little Neck Swimmer (お帰り!! スーパーストライク・リトルネックスイマーの帰還)

Since I came back to Japan I have not used fishing tackle shops very often. They don’t seem to have as many American lures as they had before. I am not even sure whether they sell any American lures. So I don’t go to fishing tackle shops very often. Yesterday was one of the rare cases where I visited one of the shops. The shop primarily sells second-hand fishing tackles. When I was browsing around second-hand lures displayed on the wall inside the shop, one of them grabbed my attention. Unlike other lures, it looked familiar to me. First I felt kind of eerie, and then I realized it was my Super Strike Little Neck Swimmer that I had lost a few years ago. I don’t remember at which fishing spot I lost it. Anyway, I bought the lure back, and it became again a member of my American lure army. I am sure I will use it at my next fishing.

（日本に戻ってきてからの私は、あまり釣具店を利用していません。以前ほどは、アメリカのルアーを扱っていないようだからです。アメリカのルアーを多少でも売っているのかどうかすら、分かりません。なので釣具店にはあまり行かないのです。昨日は、そんな私が、一軒の釣具屋に出かけた珍しい日でした。主に中古の釣具を扱っているお店です。店内の壁に展示された中古ルアーを見ている時、１つのルアーが私の注意を引きました。他のルアーと違って、見覚えがあるような気がしたのです。なんとなく不気味に感じた後、そのルアーが、数年前に紛失したスーパーストライク・リトルネックスイマーであることに気がつきました。どこの釣り場で失くしたのかは覚えていません。ともかく、私はこのルアーを買い戻し、再び、私のアメリカン・ルアー軍団の仲間入りをさせたのです。きっと、次の釣行で使うことになるでしょう。）

(No. 859) Consecutively No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて引き続き釣果なし)

A few months ago I instinctively felt that faster retrieving would be effective in catching the yellowtail amberjack this autumn. I felt so without any scientific reasons, but I impulse-bought the PENN Battle III 6000HS spinning reel for its higher recovery rate. Its “INCHES-PER-TURN” is 47. It’s the fastest reel I have used in my life. However, faster retrieving has not been effective so far. The one and only strike I have gotten from the fish this autumn was the one delivered by the Guppy Lure’s Jobo Jr., one of my pencil poppers, and the strike didn’t happen when I was retrieving the lure faster. On the contrary, it happened when I was moving the lure rather slowly. So this morning I thoroughly changed the approach. I did much slower retrieving. I used the PENN 210 reel because gear ratios of old PENN conventional reels are very low and I cannot retrieve my lures fast with them. Changing the approach was kind of refreshing, but the result remained the same.

（数カ月前、この秋にヒラマサを釣るためには、より速いリトリーブが効果的だと本能的に感じたのでした。何の科学的根拠もなくそう感じた私ですが、より速くルアーを巻き取るため、PENNのスピニングリール、バトルIII 6000HSを衝動買いしたのです。このリールの「ハンドル１回転当たりの巻き取りインチ数」は47（約119センチ）。これは、私が今まで使ってきたリールの中で最速です。しかし今のところ、速いリトリーブは効果がありません。この秋、ヒラマサからの唯一のストライクは、ペンシル・ポッパーの一つ、グッピールアーのジョボ Jr.がもたらしたものなのですが、そのストライクは、ルアーを早く巻いている時に起きたのではありません。それどころか、ルアーをかなりゆっくり動かしている時に起きたのです。そこで今朝は、アプローチを徹底的に変えてみました。もっとずっとゆっくり巻いてみることにしたのです。リールは、PENN 210を使いました。PENNの古い両軸リールはギア比が低く、ルアーを速く巻き取ることは不可能です。アプローチの変更は、ある意味、新鮮でしたが、結果は同じでした。）

It has been 10 years since the iPhone 4S was announced and Steve Jobs died on the following day. The iPhone 4S is one of the smallest iPhones. In my opinion it is the most convenient iPhone in terms of size. Mr. Jobs reportedly said that if it gets bigger than the iPhone 4S it wouldn’t be a mobile phone anymore. So in his lifetime Apple never made an iPhone bigger than 4S. I had used the iPhone 4S just until yesterday. I liked Mr. Jobs and his products so much that I had been loyal all the time. But, due to some technical reasons, I finally decided to retire my iPhone 4S. Photos of yesterday and today were taken with my new second-hand iPhone, the iPhone 6S. I am not sure how different those photos look from the previous ones. Regarding fishing, it seemed the same as yesterday. The current was not moving at all.
