(No. 547) Joyful Casting Practice at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて楽しいキャスティング練習)

I got suddenly swamped with many translation jobs. In addition, the weather will remain nasty for a few days. So I am not sure when to go fishing again. However, there is always Lake Shinji in Matsue, and it is just 5 minutes away on foot from my place. This afternoon I got so stressed out that I felt I needed to take a short break. Fortunately, the rain had stopped. So I grabbed my Pop Shaft 83, a Gamakatsu spinning rod, with the PENN Jigmaster 500 conventional reel and walked to the nearby shore of the lake at a fast pace (I know the combination is abnormal). For me, casting practice with an old PENN conventional reel is much more fun than with a spinning reel.

（突然、たくさんの翻訳の仕事に追われる状況になりました。加えて、いやな天気が数日続くようです。ですので、次いつ釣りに行けるか分かりません。とはいえ松江には常に宍道湖があるわけです。しかも湖は、我が家から歩いてほんの５分の距離です。今日の午後、ストレスがたまった私は、ちょっと休憩する必要があるように感じました。幸い、雨は上がっていました。そこで私は、ガマカツのスピニング用ロッド、ポップ・シャフト83に、PENNの両軸リール、ジグマスター500を付けて、最寄りの湖岸へ駆け足で向かったのです（それが異常な組み合わせであることは百も承知）。私にとって、PENNの古い両軸リールを使ったキャスティング練習は、スピニングリールを使った練習よりずっと楽しいものなのです。）

In particular, practice for using the Jigmaster 500 with a plastic spool is super fun. This reel doesn’t have any modern braking mechanism. It has only mechanical brake (tension brake), and I don’t even use it. The spool is loose, which means that only my thumb is a brake. In one of my previous posts, I said that casting with the PENN Squidder was very fun, but now I like the Jigmaster more. In addition, I am an ambidextrous caster. I cast a lure either right-handed or left-handed. Which means, my casting practice takes twice longer than a normal fisherman. It was so fun that I completely lost track of time under the typical overcast of the Sanin Region. As soon as I write this post, I have to work harder.

(No. 546) No Fish at Maruiwa but Nice Chats in Owashi (丸岩にて釣果なしも大芦で素敵なおしゃべり)

When I was preparing for getting down to Susumi Bay at the parking space this morning, one car stopped and a woman got out of it. She was carrying a basket on her back. She would pick nori, very tasty black seaweed that grows on the rocky shore in wintertime. After discussing how this year’s mild winter had decreased the harvest of nori, we wished each other good luck. Then, I went to Maruiwa because Susumi-hana was already occupied by a pair of lure fishermen.

（今朝、駐車スペースから須々海湾に降りていく準備をしていると、１台の車が停まり、女性が出てこられました。背中に籠を背負っておられます。冬になると磯に生えるとても美味しい黒い海藻、つまり海苔を摘まれるのです。今年の暖冬のせいでどれぐらい海苔が採れなくなっているか話し合った後、私たちはお互いの幸運を祈りました。そして、須々海鼻には既に二人組のルアー釣り師がいたため、私は丸岩に行きました。）

The swell had became weaker since yesterday, and the water around Maruiwa was clearer. There was no response from any fish at all. I kept casting my lures until I quit about 9 a.m. Instead of going back to the parking space, I walked to Susumi-hana in order to talk to the pair of lure fishermen. I found out that they were friendly and, to my surprise, they were also readers of this blog. After wishing good luck, I left them and returned to the parking space, where I met another pair that had came for largescale blackfish. I had a nice chat with them, too. What a wonderful Sunday morning!

（うねりは昨日より弱まっており、丸岩周辺の海は澄んでいました。魚からの反応は全くありません。私はルアーを投げ続け、午前９時頃に納竿しました。まっすぐ駐車スペースには戻らず、二人組のルアー釣り師と話すために須々海鼻に行ってみました。お二人は、友好的であっただけでなく、驚いたことに、このブログの読者でもありました。幸運を祈ってから彼らと別れ、駐車スペースに戻ってみると、メジナを釣りに来られた別の二人組と出会いました。彼らともまた、楽しいおしゃべりができました。なんて素敵な日曜の朝なのでしょう！）

(No. 545) No Fish at Mizushiri, Maruiwa, and Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の水尻、丸岩、そして須々海鼻にて釣果なし)

There were patches of sarashi (white churning water) along the shore of Susumi Bay when I looked down at it from the parking space on the hillside this late afternoon. In addition, the swell around Susumi-hana did not look very strong. So I decided to get down to Susumi Bay for a Japanese sea bass. I started from Mizusiri, a spot directly facing Susumi Bay. No fish responded, but I enjoyed casting my favorite lures with the PENN Jigmaster 500. Then, I went over the hill to try the water around Maruiwa, which was surrounded with a bigger and wilder sarashi. I was ready for a vicious strike from a big Japanese sea bass, but nothing happened either. Lastly, I tried the water around Susumi-hana, the fishing spot lying at the eastern end of Susumi Bay. I hoped “The third time plays for all” should be true, but unfortunately “What happens twice will happen thrice.”

（午後遅く、山の中腹にある駐車スペースから見下ろしてみると、須々海湾の岸沿いにいくつかのサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）ができていました。加えて、須々海鼻の周囲のうねりは、あまり強そうには見えませんでした。そこで私は、スズキを狙って須々海湾へ降りていきました。須々海湾に直面する水尻という釣り場から開始です。魚からの反応はなかったものの、お気に入りのルアーをPENNジグマスター500で投げるのを楽しみました。次に、丘を越えて、丸岩の周囲を試してみました。丸岩の周囲には、より大きく荒々しいサラシができていました。大きなスズキの獰猛なストライクを待ち構えていましたが、やはり何も起きません。最後に、須々海湾の東端に位置する釣り場、須々海鼻の周囲を試しました。「三度目の正直」というのが起きるのを願いましたが、あいにく「二度あることは三度ある」でした。）

(No. 544) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

While still not fully recovered from the comment tragedy, I tried not to worry about it and went to Maruiwa in Owashi this morning. I hoped that catching a nice fish on a favorite lure would cheer me up. Even though there was a nice swell and patch of sarashi (white churning water) around the fishing spot, no fish responded to my lures from 7:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. I still feel a bit depressed.

(No. 543) Pufferfish at Edabo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の枝防にてフグ)

I am slowly recovering from the tragedy of unnoticed comments. Looking for a Japanese sea bass that I could catch, I went to Kurauchi Bay this late afternoon. However, when I was standing at the fishing spot, I felt intimidated by the strong swell that seemed to have an evil heart. So I left Kurauchi Bay very shortly and went to Etomo Harbor instead. Unlike Kurauchi Bay, there was no swell around Edabo, one of the popular breakwaters in the harbor. Before sunset I caught a rather large pufferfish on my Hopkins Shorty. To my surprise, the hook of the lure was inside the mouth of the fish, which means the fish attacked and bit the lure. I believe it was the first pufferfish that I had caught properly on any lure.
（放置コメントの悲劇からゆっくりと回復しつつあります。今日の午後遅くには、スズキが釣れないかと思い、倉内湾へ行ってみました。しかし釣り場に立ってみると、邪悪な心を抱いているかのような強いうねりが私を脅かすのでした。そこで倉内湾からは早々と退散し、代わりに恵曇港へ行きました。港にある人気の高い防波堤の一つ、枝防の周辺には、倉内湾のようなうねりはありませんでした。日没前に、ホプキンス・ショーティーでかなり大きなフグが釣れました。驚いたことに、ルアーの針は、魚の口の中にありました。つまりこの魚は、ルアーを襲い、噛み付いたわけです。ルアーで真っ当にフグを釣ったのは初めてではないかと思います。）

(No. 542) No Fish at Nazuna-no-kojima in Kataku (片句のナズナの小島にて釣果なし)

I believe I am getting a master of PENN Jigmaster. I am getting the knack for using this historical reel, whose production started in 1958 according to Mystic Reel Parts. The more I use this conventional reel, the more I understand why it is still manufactured while most of its contemporaries or even younger generations were discontinued. However, the wonderful fact that I am becoming a Jigmaster master did not affect any fish around Nazuna-no-kojima in Kataku this morning.

(No. 541) No Fish at Nazuna-no-oshima in Kataku and at Etomo Harbor (片句のナズナの大島、そして恵曇港にて釣果なし)

Because there was no translation job assigned to me and the weather was unseasonably fine this afternoon, I decided to go fishing again. First I tried Nazuna-no-oshima in Kataku. There are some beautiful and popular fishing spots in Kataku, and Nazuna-no-oshima is one of them. The condition of the water around it was similar to the one around Saruwatari this morning. Although it looked promising with the strong swell, nothing happened after all. Then, I drove to Etomo Harbor. To my surprise, the water inside and outside the harbor was very calm. Nothing happened at Etomo Harbor, either.

(No. 540) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

The swell around Saruwatari in Nonami was unexpectedly strong this morning. Before jumping over the narrow channel to reach the fishing spot, I even wondered whether I should decide not to go to Saruwatari today. I was afraid that I would be unable to jump over the channel again, which means I would be left high and dry at the fishing spot. However, the water around Saruwatari looked promising. So I jumped over it, hoping to catch a Japanese sea bass under the sarashi (white churning water) around the fishing spot. Then, I kept casting my favorites lures for one hour and a half, but no fish responded. The swell seemed to get stronger. Before it’s too late, I jumped over the channel again.

（今朝、野波の猿渡周辺には、意外なほど強いうねりがありました。狭い水道を飛び越えて釣り場へと渡る前、今日は猿渡をあきらめるべきだろうかと思ったほどでした。水路を再び飛び越えることができなくなり、釣り場に取り残され、孤立してしまうのを恐れたのです。しかし、猿渡周辺の海は、魚が釣れそうな感じでした。ですので私は、サラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）の下でスズキが釣れるのではないかと期待して、水道を飛び越えたのです。その後、お気に入りのルアーを１時間半ほど投げましたが、魚からの反応はありません。うねりが強くなったようです。手遅れになる前に、再び水道を飛び越えました。）

(No. 539) No Fish at 5 Spots in Nonami, Sanami, Owashi, Kataku, and Etomo Areas (野波、佐波、大芦、片句、そして恵曇地区の５カ所にて釣果なし)

The weather forecast said that the height of waves would be 3 meters this afternoon. Generally I don’t go to any rocky shore facing the ocean when the wave height is more than 1.5 meters, but Naka-bana in Nonami was the first fishing spot that I tried today. I had found a balcony-like place at Naka-bana and wanted to try the place when the waves were higher than 1.5 meters. As I had expected, the waves hardly reached the place. However, the place was exposed to such a strong crosswind that I could not cast my lures comfortably. I had to leave the place after I made only several casts. Then, I did the run-and-gun style fishing across a total of 5 areas. After leaving Naka-bana, I went to Sanami Harbor, Owashi Harbor, Kurauchi Bay, and Etomo Harbor. I hoped I would catch a Japanese sea bass at one of them, but nothing happened.

(No. 538) No Fish at Naka-bana in Nonami (野波の中鼻にて釣果なし)

When I arrived at the parking space for either Saruwatari or Naka-bana in Nonami slightly before 8 a.m., there was a car left around the entrance to the path in the woods leading to Saruwatari. So I parked my car on the Naka-bana side of the parking space and entered into a different path from the one leading to Saruwatari. There was a weak swell around Naka-bana, but the sea was calm in general. The fisherman at Saruwatari was a bait fisherman, and I did not see him catching any big fish during my stay at Naka-bana. The same was true for me. Nothing exciting happened to me, either. I left the spot about 10 a.m.

（午前８時少し前、野波の猿渡あるいは中鼻へ行くための駐車スペースに到着してみると、猿渡へと至る林の小道の入口付近に、１台の車が残されていました。ですので私は、駐車スペースの中鼻の側に車を駐めて、猿渡へ行くのとは違う小道に入っていきました。中鼻周辺には弱いうねりがあったものの、海はだいたい平穏でした。猿渡の釣り人はエサ釣り師でしたが、私が中鼻にいる間、大きな魚は何も釣れなかったようです。同じことが私にも言えます。私にもまた何も刺激的なことは起きませんでした。私は午前10時頃に釣り場を離れました。）

(No. 537) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

This late afternoon I drove to Etomo Harbor for the Japanese Spanish mackerel or the Japanese sea bass. Before I started casting my favorite lures from the tip of Nanbo, one of breakwaters in the harbor, two pairs of fishermen had talked to me consecutively and I enjoyed chats with both the pairs. They were intrigued by my conspicuous tackle (a white rod with a PENN Jigmaster reel and a big plug). They were so likable that I happily explained why my tackle was so different, referring to this blog. Then, I fished alone at the tip of Nanbo. Although nothing happened to my lures by the time I left the spot at sunset, I remained happy because of the chats.

(No. 536) No Fish at Etomo, Sanami, and Owashi Harbors (恵曇港、佐波港、そして大芦港にて釣果なし)

The storm that broke yesterday was gone by this morning. The height of waves had reached 6 meters, so that I hoped I might catch a Japanese sea bass inside a harbor this morning. First I tried Etomo Harbor and then went to Sanami and Owashi Harbors. Although any harbor wasn't up to my expectations, I felt satisfied because I had an opportunity to help a local resident at Sanami Harbor to clean up the litter scattered on the road.

（昨日起きた嵐は、今朝までには、過ぎ去っていました。波の高さが６メートルにも達していたので、今朝はどこかの港内でスズキが釣れるのではないかと期待しました。まず最初に恵曇港を試し、次に、佐波港と大芦港を試しました。どの港も期待はずれでしたが、私は満足しました。なぜなら佐波港で、路上に散乱したゴミを片付ける地元の方のお手伝いができたからです。）

(No. 535) Picking Up Litter and Casting Practice at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にてゴミ拾いとキャスティング練習)

When I was climbing down to the shore of Kurauchi Bay this afternoon, I noticed there were some lost articles on a big rock at the shore. Someone might have lost the following articles; cigarette butts, a plastic bottle of green tea, a plastic package for a shock leader, an empty blister pack for pills, and some shreds of fishing line. I picked them up and then returned to my car. I hurried to a nearby police station to hand in those precious lost articles...... Of course, I am kidding. I just picked them up and then started my casting practice with PENN Jigmaster 500 while trying to control my irritation.

(No. 534) Missed Japanese Sea Bass at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にてスズキを逃す)

This morning I went to Saruwatari in Nonami in order to practice casting with the PENN Jigmaster 500. Casting practice at Saruwatari? Casting practice at one of the best fishing spots in the Shimane Peninsula? It sounds like doing karaoke practice at Carnegie Hall in New York, but it’s true. The primary purpose of today’s fishing is to get used to casting with the old conventional reel. Even so, a lure was being thrown at every cast, and there is always the possibility that a fish will respond to the lure if it is thrown. That’s what happened to me when I was throwing my Hopkins No=Eql. I saw a medium-sized Japanese sea bass chasing and biting the lure clearly. Unfortunately, due to my sloppiness, the barbless hook of the lure came out when the fish shook its head.

（今朝は、PENNのジグマスター500のキャスティング練習をするために、野波の猿渡へ行きました。猿渡で、キャスティング練習？　つまり、島根半島有数の釣り場で、キャスティング練習？　まるで、ニューヨークのカーネギーホールでカラオケの練習をするような感じですが、本当なんだから、しょうがありません。今日の釣りの主要目的は、この古い両軸リールでのキャスティングに慣れることでした。とはいえ、キャストのたびにルアーが投げられているわけであり、ルアーが投げられている以上、魚が反応する可能性は常にあるわけです。ホプキンス No=Eqlを投げている時に、それが起きました。中型のスズキがルアーを追いかけ、食いつくのがはっきり見えたのです。あいにく、私の注意不足のせいで、魚が頭を振ると、ルアーのバーブレスフック（カエシがつぶしてある針）は外れてしまいました。）

(No. 533) Casting Practice with Old PENN Jigmaster 500 at Etomo Harbor (恵曇港にて古いPENNジグマスター500のキャスティング練習)

When I was traveling in the Chubu district at the end of last year, I went to one of secondhand fishing tackle shops and bought a PENN Jigmaster 500 at a bargain price. I had tried some old PENN conventional reels for about a year in order to find one best suited for my current fishing style. I had always thought that the Jigmaster was too big and heavy for comfortable casting. However, as soon as I held it in my hand at the shop, I noticed it might not be the case at least with the old Jigmaster with a plastic spool. My intuition proved to be correct at Etomo Harbor.

（昨年末に中部地方を旅していた時、私は中古の釣具屋に行き、PENNのジグマスター500を格安の値段で買いました。約１年間ほど、私は、PENNの古い両軸リールをいろいろと試し、現在の自分の釣りのスタイルに最も合うのはどれか探してきたのでした。私はずっと、ジグマスターは、快適にルアーを投げるためには大きすぎ、重すぎると考えてきました。しかし、その中古店で手に取るやいなや、少なくともプラスチックスプールを搭載した古いジグマスターは、そうではないかもしれないと感じたのです。その直感の正しかったことが、恵曇港で証明されました。）

As PENN’s old catalogue explained, the plastic spool has Easy-Thumb Flanges. Although the Squidder has the similar flanges, the spool of Jigmaster is larger and that’s why it is easier to use my thumb on the spool. With the Jigmaster 500, I feel I finally realized how to use my thumb for old PENN conventional reels. In addition, it is easier to use lures with the Jigmaster thanks to the higher gear ratio (1:4). Indeed, the reel is “FOR FASTER RETRIEVE AND LIVELIER LURE ACTION.” I don’t use jigs very often, and that was another reason why I had not given serious consideration to the Jigmaster. I was wrong. Now I feel the reel was designed for not only jigs but also other types of lures, exactly as advertised in the catalogue. This old Jigmaster does not have any ball bearing, and it is also a good point for me.

（PENNの古いカタログで説明されている通り、そのプラスチックスプールには「簡単な親指操作のためのフランジ」が付いています。スクイダーにも同様なフランジはありますが、ジグマスターのスプールの方が大きく、そのため親指でスプールを操作するのが楽なのです。ジグマスター500を使うことで、私はついに、PENNの古い両軸リールに対してどう親指を使うべきか理解できた気がしています。加えて、ジグマスターのギア比は高いので（1:4）、ルアー操作が容易なのです。たしかにこのリールは「より速いリトリーブとより生き生きしたルアー・アクションのための」ものです。私はあまりジグを使わないので、そのため、ジグマスターのことを真剣に考えてこなかったという面もあります。私の誤解でした。今では私は、ジグマスターは、ジグのためだけでなく、他の種類のルアーのためのリールでもあると感じています。まさにカタログで宣伝されている通りなのです。この古いジグマスターにはボールベアリングも使われておらず、それもまた私には高ポイントです。）

I wish you a happy New Year. Since my last post I had been busy preparing for the release of my annual New Year’s rap. What is New Year’s rap? As detailed in my past posts (No. 338), I decided not to send New Year’s cards anymore when I came back to Japan in 2014. Instead, I started writing and recording rap songs every year. If you are interested, you can listen to them here although the lyrics are all in Japanese and not related to fishing. This afternoon I got freed from the pressure of New Year’s rap and drove to Etomo Harbor for young Japanese Spanish mackerels. There were many fishermen at the harbor. Baitfish were plenty along some breakwaters. I wanted to see anyone catch the fish, but nobody seemed lucky as far as I could see.

（明けましておめでとうございます。前回の投稿をしてから、私は、毎年恒例の年賀ラップのリリース準備で忙しくしていました。年賀ラップとは何でしょう？　過去の投稿（No. 338）で詳しく語っているのですが、2014年に帰国した私は、年賀状を送ることをやめてしまったのです。代わりに毎年、ラップを書いて録音することにしたのでした。歌詞はすべて日本語で、釣りにも関係ない内容ですが、もしもご興味があれば、ここで聴くことができます。今日の午後は、年賀ラップのプレッシャーからも解放されたので、サゴシ（若いサワラ）を狙って恵曇港へ行きました。港には数多くの釣り人の姿がありました。防波堤の周囲にはベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）が豊富でした。誰かにサゴシが釣れないかな、と思っていましたが、私の目が届く範囲では、誰にも釣れなかったようです。）
