(No. 895) No Fish at Akaura-kaigan in Sakaura (坂浦の赤浦海岸にて釣果なし)

I had not planned to visit Sakaura this morning. I was on my way back to Matsue City after I did an errand in Izumo City. I happened to find a road sign that indicated the way to Sakaura. I didn’t remember if I had been there before. So I got interested and decided to go to Sakaura. Although I was still not sure if I had been there when I arrived at Sakaura Harbor, I then recognized a nearby sign pointing the way to Akaura-kaigan. I remembered that I had been to Sakaura Harbor before but hadn’t been to Akaura-kaigan, which was an inlet famous for its red cobbles. So I started walking toward the inlet, and it turned out to be much farther than I had anticipated. I got quite tired when I reached it. In addition, Akaura-kaigan was a bit too shallow for my fishing. Although I don’t have much to say about the inlet in terms of fishing, visiting Akaura-kaigan for the first time was refreshing.

（今朝は坂浦に行く予定はなかったのでした。私は、出雲市でお使いをした後、松江市に戻る途中でした。坂浦への道を示す道路標識をたまたま見つけたのです。以前そこへ行ったことがあるのかどうか思い出せませんでした。興味がわいたので、坂浦に行くことにしました。坂浦港に着いてからもまだ、以前来たことがあるかどうか思い出せなかったのですが、赤浦海岸への道を示す近くの標識に見覚えがありました。私は以前、坂浦港には来たことがあるのです。しかし、赤い玉石で有名な入り江、赤浦海岸には行ったことがありませんでした。そこで私は、その入り江を目指して歩き始めたのですが、予想以上に遠いのです。かなり疲れました。しかも赤浦海岸は、私が釣りをするにはちょっと浅すぎました。釣りの面ではあまり語ることのない入り江でしたが、初めて訪れた赤浦海岸は新鮮でした。）

(No. 894) No Fish around Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡周辺にて釣果なし)

This is today’s second post. After I gave up Taka-hana in Sanami, I went to Saruwatari in Nonami. When I was climbing down the trail toward Saruwatari, I was thinking I would be able to narrowly jump over the channel to get there. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The swell was much stronger than I had expected. I gave up trying to jump over the channel. Instead, I threw my lures from a spot behind Saruwatari. The sea was pretty rough and scary, and I felt it would give me a big Japanese sea bass or a yellowtail amberjack out of pity for me. The sea was not that sympathetic.

（本日２回目の投稿です。佐波の高鼻をあきらめた私は、野波の猿渡に行きました。猿渡に向かう小道を下っている時の私は、水路を辛うじて飛び越えて猿渡にたどり着けるだろうと思っていたのです。残念ながら、それは間違いでした。うねりが予想以上に強かったのです。水路を飛び越えるのはあきらめました。その代わり、猿渡の背後の場所からルアーを投げました。海はかなり荒れていて恐ろしく、そんな海が私に同情して、大きなスズキかヒラマサを釣らせてくれるような気がしました。しかし海には、そんな同情心はなかったのでした。）

(No. 893) No Fish at Taka-hana in Sanami (佐波の高鼻にて釣果なし)

I arrived at the parking space for Saruwatari in Nonami about 7 a.m. From there I saw the sea below and noticed it was very whitish, which meant the waves might be too high. So I changed my plans and drove back to Sanami Harbor in order to fish from Taka-hana or Sakitaka-hana, both of which were safer fishing spots than Saruwatari. Sakitaka-hana was occupied by three lure fishermen, so I threw my lures from Taka-hana until about 8:30 a.m. No fish responded to my lures. The three lure fishermen at Sakitaka-hana seemed to meet with the same misfortune as mine. I gave up Taka-hana before I got too tired. Because the waves were not as high as I had estimated, I decided to go to Saruwatari.

（午前７時頃、野波の猿渡の駐車スペースに到着しました。そこから眼下の海に目をやると、海はとても白っぽく見え、つまり、波が高いのかもしれないと気づきました。そこで私は計画を変更し、猿渡よりも安全な釣り場である高鼻か先高鼻で釣るため、佐波港まで車を走らせました。先高鼻にはルアー釣り師が３人いたので、私は高鼻から、８時半頃までルアーを投げましたが、魚からの反応はありませんでした。先高鼻の３人のルアー釣り師も、どうやら私と同様に不運であるようでした。私は、あまり疲れないうちに高鼻をあきらめました。思ったほどは波が高くなかったので、猿渡に行くことにしたのです。）

(No. 892) No Fish at Tachigamo and around Kobugajima in Miho (美保の立ちがもと小ぶヶ島周辺にて釣果なし)

I had to do a household chore this morning and couldn’t start fishing as early as usual. But I felt it was OK. I felt it could be a nice change from my usual routine. It was already 9:30 a.m. when I arrived at Tachigamo, where I found one lure fisherman trying to catch an amberjack. He said to me that he had started fishing as early as daybreak and no fish had responded. He was kind and willingly allowed me to share the fishing spot with him. He left Tachigamo without any catch about 10 a.m. Shortly afterward I followed suit. On my way back to my car, I changed my mind and took the trail toward Kobugajima at the fork in the sloped woods. I hadn’t been to Kobugajima before, so I got intrigued. Kobugajima is a small island separated by the narrow channel. You need to swim or use a ladder in order to get there. The water was too cold for me to swim, and I didn’t have a ladder obviously. So I just got tempted to try to jump over the channel.

（今朝は家の用事があり、いつものような早い時間から釣りを開始できなかったのですが、まあいいか、と思いました。いつもと違うことで、良い気分転換になるような気がしたのです。立ちがもに到着した時は、既に午前９時半になっており、そこには青物を狙うルアー釣り師の姿がありました。夜明け頃から釣り始めたと言う彼ですが、何の反応もないとのことでした。彼は親切な人で、私も立ちがもで釣るのを快く許してくれました。何も釣れないまま、彼は午前10時頃に立ちがもを離れました。その後まもなく、私も彼に続きました。車に戻る途中で気が変わり、傾斜した林の中の分岐路で、小ぶヶ島に行くための小道に進みました。小ぶヶ島には行ったことがなかったので、興味を引かれたのです。小ぶヶ島は、狭い水路によって孤立している小さな島です。そこへ渡るには、泳ぐか、ハシゴを使う必要があります。寒すぎて泳ぐわけにはいきませんでしたし、当然、ハシゴも持っていませんでした。いっそ水路を飛び越えてみようか、という誘惑に駆られました。）

(No. 891) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (倉内湾と恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

Taking advantage of a short space of free time this afternoon, I started the run-and-gun style fishing at Kurauchi Bay. The water inside the bay was moderately choppy, and there were some patches of sarashi (white churning water). My past success had convinced me that a Japanese sea bass would hit my lure within my first two or three casts if they were around. Nothing happened within my first ten casts, so I gave up Kurauchi Bay quickly. In the parking space at the side of the road, I had a chat with one fisherman. He said that Kurauchi Bay looked a good fishing spot although he had not fished there. So I gave him some tips. Then I drove to Etomo Harbor. I knew that fishing had been prohibited around the ice plant thanks to the signboard I mentioned on my last blog. So I went straight to Nanbo, one of breakwaters in the harbor. There were a few lure fishermen there when I arrived. I threw my lures several times from various spots on the breakwater. Not only I but also the other fishermen seemed out of luck. I found another new signboard standing near Nanbo. It had a lighter note, indicating where to buy dried fish.

（午後からの短い空き時間を利用して、倉内湾でラン＆ガン方式の釣りを開始しました。湾内は適度に波があり、サラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）がいくつかできていました。これまでの成功体験から、スズキがいれば最初の数投でヒットすることが分かっていました。10投しても何も起きなかったので、倉内湾はすぐにあきらめました。道路脇の駐車スペースで、一人の釣り人と話をしました。彼は、倉内湾では釣ったことがないそうですが、いい釣り場のようだと言いました。そこで私は、ちょっとしたコツを教えてあげました。その後、恵曇港へ向かいました。前回の投稿で紹介した看板のおかげで、製氷所の周辺が釣り禁止となっていることが分かっていました。そこで私は、恵曇港の防波堤の一つである南防に直行したのです。到着してみると、ルアー釣り師が数人いました。防波堤の様々な場所から何回かルアーを投げました。私だけでなく、他の釣り人も運がないようでした。南防のそばに別の新しい看板が立っていました。どこで干物が買えるかを示す、より明るい内容のものでした。）

(No. 890) No Fish at Etomo and Owashi Harbors (恵曇港と大芦港にて釣果なし)

Seeing a new signboard that says “fishing is prohibited” always makes me sad. It’s not because I am not allowed to do fishing there any more but because probably there have been some troubles between amateur anglers and professional fishermen. I found one of such signboards in front of the ice plant at Etomo Harbor this afternoon. What made me sadder was that some anglers didn’t seem to care about the signboard. They were doing exactly what they were prohibited from doing just around it. As soon as I found the signboard, I left the spot and drove to one of other spots in Etomo Harbor, the mouth of the Sada River. I was there for a Japanese sea bass or a fluke, but nothing happened. Then, I drove to Owashi Harbor in order to try my luck at Niregi-no-hato, one of breakwaters in the harbor. Nothing happened there, either. There was just a chilly wind blowing.

（「釣り禁止」という新しい看板を見ると、いつも悲しくなります。釣りをすることが許されなくなったからではなく、おそらく釣り人と漁師の間で、何らかのトラブルがあっただろうからです。今日の午後、恵曇港の製氷所の前で、そうした看板に気づきました。私をさらに悲しませたのは、どうやらその看板を気にしていない釣り人がいることでした。彼らは、まさにその看板の周囲で、やってはいけないとされていることをやっているのでした。その看板に気づいた私はすぐにそこを離れ、恵曇港の他の釣り場の一つ、佐陀川河口に車を走らせました。スズキかヒラメが釣れないかなと思いましたが、何も起きませんでした。次に、大芦港へ車を走らせ、楡木の波止で試してみることにしました。そこでもまた、何も起きませんでした。ただ、冷たい風が吹いているだけでした。）

(No. 889) Sunken Tackle at Kaizaki Harbor in Mihonoseki (美保関の海崎港にて沈没タックル)

According to one of my fishing theories, if you want to improve the possibility of catching fish, you should clean the litter along the waterside before you start fishing. As I have explained before on this blog, the deity of fishing keeps a watchful eye on your good or bad deed and will reward you with a good catch when you do a good one. So I got happy this morning when I was walking on the bank along the shore of Lake Shinji. I found two empty cups of instant noodles left on the bank. Trying to attract the sacred spectator’s attention, I ostentatiously picked up the cups and then disposed of them in a proper way. 

（私の釣り理論の一つに、魚が釣れる可能性を高めたいのなら、釣りを始める前に水辺のゴミを拾うべきだ、というものがあります。以前にもこのブログで紹介しましたが、釣りの神様は常にあなたの善行あるいは悪行に目を光らせていて、あなたが善行をすれば、良い釣果を与えてくださるのです。ですので今朝、宍道湖のほとりの土手を歩いていた私は、嬉しくなりました。インスタント麺の空きカップが２つ、土手に放置されていたのです。私は、その神聖な観客の注意を引くため、これ見よがしにカップを拾い上げ、そしてきちんと処分しました。）

So my anticipations were raised higher than usual when I started the wide-area run-and-gun style fishing along the Lake Nakaumi/Shinji water system this afternoon. Obviously I was expecting to catch a nice fish, but nothing happened to my lures all along. Instead of catching fish, I found another kind of litter left on the tip of one of two breakwaters at Kaizaki Harbor in Mihonoseki. It was a sunken fishing tackle which I believed was recently salvaged from the bottom of the sea. It must have been in the sea for a very long time because it had acorn barnacles on it. I disposed of the tackle in a proper way. The deity of fishing must give me a good catch next time.

（というわけで、今日の午後、宍道湖／中海水系に沿って広域ラン＆ガン方式の釣りを開始した時の私の期待感は、いつもより高まっていたのです。言うまでもなく私は、ナイスフィッシュが釣れることを期待していたのですが、私のルアーにはずっと何も起きませんでした。魚が釣れる代わりに、美保関の海崎港にある２つの防波堤のうちの１つの先端に、別の種類のゴミが残されているのを見つけたのです。それは、最近海底から引き揚げられたと思われる沈没したタックルでした。フジツボが付着していたので、かなり長い間、海中に残されていたのでしょう。私はそのタックルをきちんと処分しました。次回の釣行では、釣りの神様がきっと何かを釣らせてくれることでしょう。）

(No. 888) No Fish at Some Spots in Mihonoseki (美保関のいくつかの釣り場にて釣果なし)

As soon as I put out my annual New Year’s rap around noon, I was headed for Mihonoseki for doing my first fishing in 2022. I was very excited just because it was my first fishing this year. Unlike the last time, there was no wind blowing this afternoon. It was not very cold. The current along the Sakai-suido Waterway was not fast. Everything seemed different from the last time except for the result of my fishing. I had a premonition that I would push forward the way of my so-called “non-fishing” this year too. Anyway, I wish you a happy new year!

（お昼頃に毎年恒例の年賀ラップをリリースした私は、2022年の初釣りをするため、すぐに美保関に向かいました。今年の初釣りというだけで、私は、とてもワクワクしていました。前回の釣行と異なり、今日の午後は風が吹いていませんでした。あまり寒くもありません。境水道の流れも速くありません。何もかもすべてが、前回の釣行とは違うようでした。ただ私の釣果を除いて。私は今年もまた、いわゆる「無魚釣り」道を邁進していく気がします。ともあれ皆さん、新年明けましておめでとうございます。）
