My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 1470) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

My mother has been sick for about 10 days. She kept coughing and couldn't stop it. She might have suffered not only a nasty cold but also light asthma. I was reluctant to leave her, so I haven’t had a lot of opportunities to go fishing for a while. This afternoon she became better, although she didn’t make a full recovery yet. I took advantage of it. I went to Saruwatari in Nonami and started fishing at 3 p.m. I saw some baitfish cruising along the shore, but nothing happened to my lures. I left the spot an hour and half later. Maybe I should have gone fishing early in the morning. But, what I want to do first in the morning is to check her physical condition as soon as my mother wakes up. I am not sure when I can go fishing early in the morning, which is believed to be the best time for catching the yellowtail amberjack, and I think October is the best month for catching the coveted fish. I might be losing the greatest opportunities to catch the fish this year, but it's OK. I just wish my mother make a full recovery soon.

(No. 1469) No Fish but Drowning Wasp Rescued at Safuki-bana in Nonami

I would like to declare here. My experimentation on using conventional reels is over. Since 2018 I have often used conventional reels instead of spinning reels. There was no specific reason behind it. I just felt like using them. However, recently I felt I had obtained sufficient experience of using conventional reels, and my enthusiasm for them was gone. Now I own only spinning reels. My dislike for braided lines was also gone. When I used conventional reels, I preferred using nylon monofilament line. For me, using braided line on a conventional reel has been always tricky. The possibility of losing my precious lure is much bigger than with nylon monofilament line. But now that I only use spinning reels, braided line has returned to my world.
This afternoon I was standing at the tip of Safuki-bana in Nonami. The sea was so calm. Probably that’s why I ended up using only one plug today: the Guppy pencil popper. Maneuvering a pencil popper on the surface using a spinning reel especially with braided line on it sometimes feels like a religious ritual for me. Especially when nobody is around and the sea is very quiet like today. Oh I remember. The quietness was broken once. I found a big wasp floating and almost drowning on the surface. I have a long history of battle with the wasp species, but I couldn’t leave it to its fate. So I rescued it, hoping someday the wasp species should offer a peace treaty with me.

(No. 1468) No Fish Even with My Smallest Jig at Kurauchi Bay

The above scorpion fish is not my catch. It's a catch by the old classmate of mine. He kept visiting Kurauchi Bay after I introduced the bay to him and caught the big scorpion fish. His cheap small jig seems working. I got intrigued with the effectiveness of the jig. So today I used one of smallest jigs of mine: the Crippled Herring from Luhr Jensen. I kept throwing this legendary metal jig with raised anticipations, but……, Why? Nothing happened.

(No. 1467) Beautiful Isaki (Japanese grunt) at Kurauchi Bay

As you may know, I cannot catch fish these days. So I tend to say, “There are much fewer fish than before. Most likely due to the climate change. Sad, sad, sad.” But, I might be just wrong. Actually, there might be a lot of fish in the sea, and it’s just like my fishing or my big American plugs are not very effective in catching them. This morning I introduced one of my old classmates to Kurauchi Bay. He seemed excited because he had recently purchased new rod and reel for the first time in several years. He said his new tackle felt so light. And he used a cheap small metal jig that you can buy only at one of general discount stores, not a genuine fishing tackle shop. And it didn't take him much time to catch a beautiful isaki (Japanese grunt). I took a picture of his metal jig with two of my American plugs for the size comparison. Maybe I should use smaller jigs if I really want to catch fish? But, is that really what I want to do? Somebody please tell me!! Nobody knows including myself. Hahaha.
