(No. 679) No Fish at Sakitaka-hana in Sanami (佐波の先高鼻にて釣果なし)

When I arrived at the parking space for either Saruwatari or Naka-bana in Nonami this morning, one car was already parked on the Saruwatari side. After I wondered briefly whether I should go to Naka-bana, I drove back and to Sanami Harbor in order to try Sakitaka-hana. Fortunately Sakitaka-hana was empty when I arrived. Unfortunately the water around it seemed empty, too.

（今朝、野波の猿渡あるいは中鼻へ行くための駐車場に到着してみると、既に１台の車が猿渡の側に駐められていました。中鼻へ行くべきかどうか少し考えてから、私は引き返し、先高鼻を試すために佐波港に向かいました。到着してみると、幸いにして先高鼻には誰もいませんでした。あいにく、その周囲の海にも、何もいないようでした。）

(No. 678) Missed Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて魚を逃す)

The sea was very calm this morning. No waves. No swell. The surface was almost completely flat. Speaking from my experience, such an extreme calmness is not good for fishing. In addition, I could not see any baitfish. So I did not have high expectations, but one fish struck my Hopkins No=Eql when I was retrieving it just below the surface. The fish pulled hard and tried to run toward the bottom. It could be a yellowtail amberjack, but I am not sure because the barbless hook of the lure came out before I could see the body of the fish.

（今朝の海は非常に穏やかでした。波はなし。うねりもなし。水面はほとんど完璧に真っ平らでした。私の経験からいえば、こうした極端な穏やかさは、魚釣りにはよくありません。加えて、ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿もありませんでした。なので私は大して期待はしていなかったのです。しかし、ホプキンス No=Eqlを水面直下で引いている時、ストライクがありました。その魚は強く引き、海底めがけて走ろうとしました。ヒラマサであったのかもしれませんが、確信はありません。魚体を目にする前に、ルアーについているバーブレスフックが外れてしまったのです。）

(No. 677) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

Where have all the fish including baitfish gone? This morning I kept throwing my favorite lures toward the vast ocean from Maruiwa for about 2.5 hours, but nothing happened. When I was about to call it a day, someone called me from behind. It was Mr. F, who is a regular fisherman to Maruiwa. He said he had not caught any good fish for some time. I enjoyed a nice chat with him for the first time in a long time.

（ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）も含めて、魚たちは、どこへ行ってしまったのでしょう？　今朝の私は、丸岩から大海めがけ、約2.5時間もお気に入りのルアーを投げ続けましたが、何も起きませんでした。もうやめようかなと思っている時、背後から誰かが呼んだのでした。丸岩の常連であるＦさんです。Ｆさんも、ここしばらく良いのは釣れていないとのこと。私は久しぶりにＦさんとのおしゃべりを楽しみました。）

(No. 676) Unexpected Substitution at Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の須々海鼻にて予期せぬ代用)

I realized that I needed a pair of chopsticks but I did not have one when I started having breakfast at Susumi-hana this morning. Usually I buy some onigiris (rice balls) for breakfast at a fishing spot, but today I picked a bento (lunch box). Whereas you don’t need a pair of chopsticks for an onigiri, you need one for a bento. I was at a loss briefly, but a good idea occurred to me. How about using the Gator Casting Spoon? Can I substitute it for a real spoon? I believed it would work because my Gator Casting Spoon is big enough. I removed the hook from the spoon and started eating the bento with it. Delicious! My Gator Casting Spoon saved me this morning although it did not help me catch a fish.

（今朝、須々海鼻で朝食を取り始めた私は、箸が必要であるのに、持っていないことに気づきました。いつもは、釣り場での朝食用におにぎりを買うのですが、今日は、弁当を選択したのです。おにぎりには箸は必要ありませんが、弁当には必要です。私は途方に暮れたものの、すぐに良い考えが浮かびました。ゲーター・キャスティング・スプーンを使ってはどうだろう？　本物のスプーンの代わりになるだろうか？　私は、なると思いました。なぜなら私のゲーター・キャスティング・スプーンは十分に大きいからです。私は、スプーンから針を取り除き、そのスプーンを使って、弁当を食べ始めました。美味しい！　今朝、ゲーター・キャスティング・スプーンは私を助けてくれました。魚を釣るのは助けてくれませんでしたが。）

(No. 675) No Fish at Sinsinbo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の新々防にて釣果なし)

The height of waves was predicted to reach 3 meters this afternoon. So I went to Etomo Harbor for the Japanese sea bass. In particular, I wanted to try the tip of Sinsinbo, the largest and the scariest breakwater in the harbor. When I arrived at the harbor, Sinsinbo was empty. I took out my PENN Jigmaster 505HS spooled with very thick braided line. The line was so thick that I felt I could pull up any big fish from the water and lift it up to the top of breakwater. I was well prepared for a vicious strike from a big fish, but no fish responded.

（今日の午後は、波の高さが３メートルに達すると予測されていました。そこで私は、スズキを狙って恵曇港へ行きました。とりわけ、同港最大にして最恐の防波堤である新々防の先端を試してみたいと思いました。港に着いてみると、新々防は無人でした。私は、極太のPEラインを巻いたPENNのジグマスター505HSを取り出しました。ラインがとても太いので、どんな大魚でも海から引っこ抜いて、防波堤の上まで持ち上げられそうでした。大魚の獰猛なストライクに対する準備は万端でしたが、魚からの反応はありませんでした。）

(No. 674) No Fish at Uomiyama in Mitsu (御津の魚見山にて釣果なし)

“Hey. Man up! I know you are not a strong man, but I really think you have to man up now! At last!” That’s what I would like to tell him now although I don’t like to reveal who he is here. Anyway, a life is full of stresses, and I felt stressed out this afternoon. I needed to go fishing in order to refresh myself. To be exact, I needed to throw my favorite lures regardless of whether I could catch a fish or not. So I drove to Mitsu in order to cast my lures from Uomiyama. I was with my PENN Jigmaster 500 conventional reel. I have tried a variety of PENN conventional reels, and now I feel the Jigmaster 500 with a plastic spool can produce the greatest pleasure in terms of casting lures. Thanks to my Jigmaster, now I feel better. Still, I would like to say to him, “Hey. Man up!”

（「おい、男らしく責任を取れよ！　お前が強い男じゃないってことは知ってるが、今こそ、ついに、責任を取らなきゃな！」。これが今、私が彼に言いたいことです。彼が誰であるのかは、ここでは明かしません。ともかく、人生はストレスに満ちており、今日の午後、私はストレスが溜まってしまいました。気分を一新するために釣りに行く必要がありました。正確に言えば、釣果に関係なく、お気に入りのルアーを投げる必要がありました。そこで、御津の魚見山にルアーを投げに行きました。PENNのジグマスター500という両軸リールを使いました。これまでに様々なPENNの両軸リールを使ってきましたが、ルアーを投げるという点においては、プラスチックスプールを搭載したジグマスター500を使うのがいちばん楽しく感じます。ジグマスターのおかげで、気分が良くなりました。でも、やはり私は彼に言いたい。「おい、覚悟を決めて、男になれよ！」）

(No. 673) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay, Koura Public Beach, and Etomo Harbor (倉内湾、古浦海水浴場、及び恵曇港にて釣果なし)

The waves were too high to search for the yellowtail amberjack at a serious rocky shore, such as Saruwatari in Nonami, this morning. So I searched for the Japanese sea bass, which likes the choppy sea. First I drove to Kurauchi Bay. There were nice patches of sarashi (white churning water) along the shore of the bay, but no fish responded. Then I drove to Koura Public Beach to search for the fluke as well as the sea bass. Throwing favorite lures from the sandy beach, I remembered the beaches in New York City. Finally I drove to Etomo Harbor to try Nakabo. The wind had became much stronger, and I could not stay there long enough to catch any fish.

（今朝は波が高過ぎて、野波の猿渡のような本格的な磯でヒラマサ狙うことはできませんでした。そこで私は、波立つ海を好むスズキを狙いました。まず倉内湾に行きました。湾の岸沿いに、良い感じのサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）ができていましたが、魚からの反応はありません。次に古浦海水浴場へ行き、スズキのほか、ヒラメを狙いました。砂浜からお気に入りのルアーを投げていると、ニューヨーク市のビーチが思い出されました。最後に恵曇港へ行き、中防を試しました。風がますます強まっていて、魚が釣れるまで粘ることはできませんでした。）

(No. 672) No Fish at Naka-bana in Nonami (野波の中鼻にて釣果なし)

When I arrived at the parking space for either Saruwatari or Naka-bana in Nonami, there were two cars left on the Saruwatari side. I was kind of glad to know that Saruwatari had been already taken. I love Saruwatari, which I believe is one of the greatest fishing spots in the Sanin Region, so much that I would like as many fishermen as possible to try it at least once in their fishing lives. I took Naka-bana this morning. Unfortunately nothing happened to me at Naka-bana, but I felt glad when I saw one of the fishermen at Saruwatari catch a fish on his lure.

（野波の猿渡か中鼻へ行くための駐車スペースに到着してみると、猿渡側に２台の車が駐められているのでした。猿渡に既に先客がいることを知り、私はなんだか嬉しくなりました。山陰地方でも有数の釣り場だと思う猿渡を、私はとても愛しているので、なるべく多くの釣り人に、その釣り人生において少なくとも１回は、猿渡を試してほしいと思っているのです。私は今朝は中鼻に行きました。あいにく中鼻の私には何も起きませんでしたが、猿渡にいる釣り人の１人が、ルアーで魚を釣ったのを見て、嬉しく感じました。）
