This post is about my PENN 706Z reel and is the first of my two posts today. “My favorite reel” is an expression I sometimes use. It basically means “my CURRENT favorite reel” because sooner or later I am likely to find another reel more pleasing. PENN 706Z is “my current favorite” but also I feel it might be “my ALL-TIME favorite.” To put it simply, I am getting more and more sure that I love PENN 706Z much more than any other reels I have ever used.

When I was in the U.S., some older surf fishermen told me they used to pack 706Z with grease in order to make it submersible. When the inside of the reel is filled with grease and there is no room for water intrusion, PENN 706Z, which doesn’t have seals or O-rings, becomes practically submersible. So I did it today, as shown on the above photos. The reel became a bit heavier than before, and turning the handle became a bit heavier too, but it feels better. The reel feels more sturdy now. And there was an unexpected by-product. The click sound made by the anti-reverse dock was almost gone. Now my PENN 706Z is a very quiet reel.
（米国に住んでいた頃、年配のサーフフィッシャーマンから、昔は706Zにグリスをぎゅうぎゅうに詰めて、水中での使用を可能にしていたと聞いたことがあります。リール内部がグリスで満たされてしまえば、水が入り込む余地はなくなり、シールやOリングのないPENN 706Zであっても、水中使用が可能になるわけです。そこで、上の写真に示すように、私もやってみました。リールの重量は以前より少し増し、また、ハンドルも少し重たくなりましたが、感触は良くなりました。リールの安定感も増した気がします。そして、思わぬ副産物もありました。逆転防止機構が出すクリック音がほぼ消えたのです。私のPENN 706Zは、とても静かなリールになりました。）
