Under the excruciating heat wave, people tend to be lazy indoors, and I am not an exception. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because then we get less likely to suffer heatstroke. But yesterday I couldn’t be lazy. Because I got a sneaking hunch. “I have not been to Saruwatari in Nonami for a while, so weeds might have gotten too much.” According to the “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook,” Saruwatari is “arguably the most popular fishing spot in Nonami.” However, it was in 2013 when the wonderful guidebook was published, and I am not sure if there are enough number of fishermen who often go fishing at Saruwatari now. The writer of the guidebook, Mr. Koji Ogata, said in its postscript, “Paths to rocky shores are gradually falling into disuse. There are no ‘managers’ for those paths, so once people no longer walk on them, they will revert back to nature.” And my hunch was right. The entrance into the path in the woods had been completely covered with weeds, and there was no way for anyone who had not been there to find it. So I couldn’t be lazy yesterday. I cut the weeds, almost suffered heatstroke, and managed to survive it.
（暑さがひどいので、ついつい屋内でゴロゴロしてしまいがちです。私も例外ではありません。そして、それは必ずしも悪いことではないのです。屋内で怠けていたほうが熱中症になりにくいからです。しかし昨日は怠けているわけにいきませんでした。嫌な予感がしたのです。「そういえば、野波の猿渡にしばらく行っていない。ひょっとしたら、雑草が生い茂っているのではあるまいか」。『山陰の釣り場総覧』によると、猿渡は「現在、一連の野波の地磯では人気ナンバーワンであろう」とされています。しかし、この素晴らしいガイドブックが出版されたのは2013年のことなのです。ちょくちょく猿渡に通って釣りを楽しむ釣り人が、現在、十分な数、存在しているかどうかは定かではありません。ガイドブックの著者である緒形宏二氏は、あとがきで、こう書いています。「地磯道はだんだん廃れていく一方です。この釣りの道は、誰も管理者がいるわけではないので、歩く人がいなくなったら、すぐに自然に逆戻りしてしまいます」。そして、私の予感は当たっていたのでした。林の中の小道への入り口は、完全に雑草に覆われており、以前来たことがなければ、その小道を見つけるのは不可能な状態だったのです。だから怠けるわけにはいきませんでした。私は雑草を刈り、熱中症になりかけ、なんとかサバイブしました。）
