Some lures
and methods effective in catching striped
bass in the U.S. are also effective for Japanese sea bass. For example, a big pencil popper can entice Japanese sea bass in Lake Shinji into frenzy just as it does in the U.S. This morning I applied the method to the other side of the Shimane
Peninsula. I went to Takashiro-bana in Kataku to cast my big
topwater plugs into the Sea of Japan.

There were already three bait fishermen for the largescale blackfish when I arrived at the spot
around 5:30 a.m. Trying not to interfere with their fishing, I positioned myself
away from them. I thought I was far enough, but my topwater plugs might have splashed too noisily for them. “Please don’t cast it too close,” one of them shouted to me. “Oh I am so sorry,” I shouted
back.
（午前５時30分頃に釣り場に到着すると、メジナを狙う３人のエサ釣り師の姿がありました。彼らの邪魔にならぬよう、私はひとり離れたところに場所を定めました。自分では十分に離れているつもりでしたが、私のトップウォーター・プラグが起こす水しぶきは、彼らには騒々し過ぎたようです。「こっちに投げんで〜」と、釣り人の一人が私に叫びました。「あ〜すいませんでした」と私は叫び返しました。）
I
stopped casting and started a friendly chat with him. He told me that using
a metal jig around the bottom of the sea is more effective in catching a yellowtail amberjack,
which I was looking for, at this time of the year. He also taught me how to catch the largescale blackfish with krill. It is often
fun to talk with somebody whose fishing style is different from mine.
（私はキャストを中止し、その男の人と友好的な会話を始めました。彼によれば、一年のこの時期、ヒラマサを狙うのならば、海底あたりでメタルジグを使うのが効果的だそうです。ヒラマサは、私が狙っている魚でした。彼はまた、オキアミを使ったメジナ釣りの方法を教えてもくれました。自分のスタイルとは異なる釣りをする人と話すのは、楽しいことが多いです。）
