(No. 63) A Series of Big Explosions at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて大爆発が連続)

If you want to see a big explosion on the surface of Lake Shinji now, all that you have to do is to carry a big pencil popper such as Guppy Lure’s or Northbar’s and use it the way American surf fishermen do. Hold the rod at far above the reel seat while pinching the line with your thumb and forefinger, and shake the rod tip vigorously like a whip. The lure does not move forward much but keeps swinging crazily from side to side.

It makes some fish so excited that the fish cannot help assaulting the lure, but often they become too enraged to hit the target. They often attack some splashes that the lure makes, instead of the lure itself. That’s why you can see a big explosion on the surface. Yesterday and today I saw three big explosions. Two of them were so close to me that my heart almost stopped. At one time there was a spectator behind me. He said, “Wow! Huge!” Surprised by the explosion, he was as if filled with emotion.
