My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 531) No Fish at Toshijima Island in Mie Prefecture

I was in Mie Prefecture yesterday and now I am in Wakayama Prefecture. The annual book discussion event, where a few of my old university classmates and I get together somewhere in Japan once a year and discuss one or two designated books, has been privately underway since yesterday. This year’s books are all about Kumano in the Kii Peninsula, one of the most mystical regions in Japan. Last night we were in Toshijima Island in Mie Prefecture. Before the discussion started, I managed to sneak into one of fishing harbors in the island. Although I made only several casts and nothing happened, it was exciting to find and try a completely unfamiliar fishing spot with favorite lures.

(No. 530) No Fish and Ongoing Experiment at Saruwatari in Nonami

When I arrived at the parking space for Saruwatari or Naka-bana in Nonami slightly after 7 a.m., I found there was a car parked on the side of Saruwatari. I presumed that Saruwatari was already taken. So I left my car on the opposite side and started walking to Naka-bana, the other fishing spot separated from Saruwatari by an inaccessible cliff. That’s why I got a bit disappointed to find that two fishermen were at Naka-bana, not at Saruwatari. They were bait fishermen, so it was not easy for them to share the fishing spot with a lure fisherman like me. They told me that it was their first time they had tried the fishing spot.
I respectfully instructed them where to park a car in the parking space. If you go to Saruwatari, you should leave your car on the side of Saruwatari. If you go to Naka-bana, you should on the side of Naka-bana. And a following fisherman can know which fishing spot is taken. After wishing them good luck, I walked back to the parking space and then took the path to Saruwatari. I started fishing about 8:30 a.m. and stopped it one hour later. No fish attacked my lures, but I enjoyed casting my favorite lures and performing the ongoing experiment with an old PENN conventional reel for using a large spinner.

(No. 529) No Fish but Continued Experiment at Maruiwa in Owashi

This morning I went to Maruiwa in Owashi and resumed my experiment with an old PENN conventional reel for casting and retrieving a large spinner originally designed for pike/muskie fishing in Sweden. I attached a sinker to one of the large spinners, so now it weighs 120 grams (4.25 oz.). The casting distance was satisfying, and retrieving it with a conventional reel was much easier than with a spinning reel. I hope someday I will catch a big longtooth grouper on one of the spinners.

(No. 528) No Fish but Useful Experiment at Sakitaka-hana in Sanami

This morning I planned to go to Saruwatari in Nonami, but I had to change the plan due to a potential danger from the strong swell. Instead, I drove to Sanami Harbor in order to try Sakitaka-hana. At the harbor there were three friendly fishermen, and they asked me how to get to Sakitaka-hana from the harbor. They said that they had tried to get there once but failed. So I guided one of them through the woods and to Sakitaka-hana. My guidance was so appreciated that I felt as if I had done a great job and could go home with great satisfaction even without doing any fishing.
After making several casts of my favorite lures in vain, I started an experiment. I love old PENN conventional reels such as Squidder. However, I had not come up with any realistic application of those powerful but slow retrieving reels in the modern lure fishing. One idea flashed into my mind yesterday. How about retrieving one of the large spinners? I had bought some large spinners for pike/muskie fishing when I was in Stockholm on a business trip. In combination with a heavy sinker, I might cast the spinner far enough and let it sink to the bottom. I might catch a big bottom-dwelling fish such as the longtooth grouper. That was the idea. As a result of today’s experiment, I felt confident about it.

(No. 527) No Fish at Mihonoseki and Ui Harbors

This morning one of my old classmates and I went to Mihonoseki Harbor, which I had not visited for several years. We got surprised when we arrived at the harbor about 7 a.m. A total of eight lure fishermen were already casting their metal jigs toward the outside of the harbor. Apparently they were trying to catch the Japanese Spanish mackerel. Our expectations got elevated. The presence of a large number of fishermen in the early morning should mean that they have caught a large number of fish recently. However, our expectations got lessened rather shortly. The response from the fish seemed very sporadic. Not only we but also most of other fishermen did not catch any fish. After fishing at the harbor in vain until about 10 a.m., we drove to Ui Harbor. Nothing happened there, either.

(No. 526) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami

Time flies. The year 2019 is going to end in 2 weeks. I wonder how many more times I can go fishing by the end of the year and whether I can catch a yellowtail amberjack in 2019. I was at Saruwatari in Nonami this morning. I used my favorite American lures, such as Roberts Ranger and Guppy Lure’s pencil popper. I had not caught the coveted fish on those lures and therefore I kept tenaciously using them. My tenacity has not yet paid off. Being peacefully calm, only the sea consoled me.

(No. 525) Unable to Go to Ketakake Peninsula and No Fish at Ushirodako

Recently I realized that I had not been to the Ketakake Peninsula in Izumo City for more than two years. Two years! Indeed, time flies. Since I realized it I had been thirsty for visiting the peninsula, one of the most otherworldly places in the Shimane Peninsula. Today finally I had a chance to do it. I woke up much earlier than usual and drove to Izumo City. It was before daybreak when I arrived at the parking space at the end of Uryu Harbor. No car was parked. As soon as I started walking on the path in the woods, I found a sign in front of me. It said, “DANGER. DO NOT ENTER.” Although I had heard it through the grapevine, it was still a slight shock to see the sign with my own eyes. Instead of the Ketakake Peninsula, I went to Ushirodako, a much more accessible fishing spot around Uryu Harbor.
The swell around Ushirodako was stronger than I had expected, so I had to quit fishing shortly. When I returned to the parking space, there were four cars parked along with my car. I wondered whether they had gone to the Ketakake Peninsula. Then, one local guy walked to me, and I started a nice and informative chat with him. According to him, the sign was put up because there were some fallen trees in the woods. “In spite of the fallen trees they still walk to the peninsula,” he said to me. “They believe the catch will be particularly good over there, but it is not different from other fishing spots.” I agreed to him. From my experience, the catch in the Ketakake Peninsula was not special (probably because I am not very good at catching fish). However, I believe trekking to the peninsula is special. I miss it.

(No. 524) Japanese Sea Bass at Maruiwa in Owashi

This morning I could not stay long at a fishing spot due to my translation assignment scheduled for later in the morning. So I went to Maruiwa in Owashi. The access to Maruiwa is easier than that to other fishing spots such as Saruwatari in Nonami. The sea around Maruiwa was choppy, and there was a swell. Some birds were circling around above the sea. It was about 8 a.m. I felt a very strong strike on my Hopkins No=Eql. The strike was so strong that first I thought it was a big yellowtail amberjack, but once the fish got hooked it did not put up much resistance. Still, it was a beautiful Japanese sea bass of 65 cm (26 in.) long.
