(No. 885) Young Japanese Amberjack at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にてワカナ)

The water around Saruwatari looked very promising about 7:30 a.m. when I started throwing my lures. There was no wind blowing, and there were no strong waves. The surface just looked a bit choppy. From a distance, it must have looked like a calm and safe sea. However, actually there was a strong swell around Saruwatari. No wind, no waves, just a strong swell. The sea was deceptively lively this morning and therefore could be dangerous. I felt I had to be more careful than usual. I also felt that the conditions were good for catching amberjacks. It wasn't long until a young Japanese amberjack hit my Tsunami XD Talkin Popper (7 in. long). If I had switched from the big popper to a smaller lure after that first catch, I might have caught more, but it's not my style to use small lures just because they catch more fish, and I didn't have a small lure with me to begin with, as usual.

（ルアーを投げ始めた午前７時半頃、猿渡周辺の海はとても期待できそうでした。風もなければ、強い波もありません。ただ、水面が少しざわついて見えるだけでした。遠くから見たら、穏やかで安全な海に見えたことでしょう。しかし実は、猿渡周辺には強いうねりがあったのです。風も波もなく、あるのは強いうねりのみ。今朝の海は見かけによらず活気に満ちていて、だからこそ危険にもなり得るのでした。私はいつも以上に慎重であらねばならないと思いました。同時に私は、青物を釣るには良い条件だとも感じました。ほどなくして、ワカナ（若いブリ）がツナミXDトーキン・ポッパー（18センチ）にヒットしました。もしこの後、大きなポッパーから小さなルアーに変えていたら、もっと釣れていたかもしれませんが、ただ数が釣れるからという理由で、小さなルアーを使うのは私のスタイルではありませんし、それにそもそも、いつもと同様、小さなルアーは持っていなかったのです。）

 

(No. 884) No Fish at Sanami Harbor, Kaka Harbor, and Kurauchi Bay (佐波港、加賀港、そして倉内湾にて釣果なし)

I arrived at the parking space for Saruwatari in Nonami about 7 a.m. I was eager to try Saruwatari this morning for the yellowtail amberjack, but when I was about to climb down the trail leading to the fishing spot, a gust of wind blew and the rain started to get heavier. I decided to take a safer and more comfortable option. I gave up Saruwatari today and decide to embark the wide-area run-and-gun style fishing across a few fishing ports. I started at Sanami Harbor and then continued at Kaka Harbor. Lastly I tried Kurauchi Bay. The sea looked full of promise as usual, and nothing responded to my lures as usual, and, as usual, I was not very disappointed.

（午前７時頃、野波の猿渡へ行くための駐車スペースに到着しました。今朝はヒラマサを釣ってやろうと意気込んでいましたが、釣り場に続く小道を降りていこうとした直前、突風が吹くとともに、雨が強くなり始めたのです。私は、より安全かつ快適な策を取ることにしました。今日は猿渡をあきらめ、いくつかの漁港を股にかけて広域ラン＆ガン方式の釣りに乗り出すことにしたのです。佐波港から開始し、次に加賀港です。最後に倉内湾に挑戦しました。海はいつも通り、とても期待できそうに見え、ルアーにはいつも通り、何も反応がなく、そして、いつも通り、私はそれほどがっかりはしなかったのでした。）

(No. 883) No Fish at Sanami and Mitsu Harbors but Poor Dog at Owashi Harbor (佐波港と御津港にて釣果なしも大芦港で可哀想な犬)

The Sea of Japan has been very rough since yesterday. Under such conditions you have a greater chance to catch a Japanese sea bass inside a bay or a harbor. According to the very useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook,” Sanami Harbor is one of such fishing spots. Nonetheless, I wasn’t expecting to see other fishermen at the harbor when I was driving to it this afternoon. To my surprise, there was one lure fisherman that was about to start fishing when I arrived about 2 p.m. He didn’t seem to be bothered by the strong winds or high waves. What an enthusiast! However, not only I but also he was out of luck at Sanami Harbor. Next, I went to Niregi-no-hato in Owashi Harbor, where I found a mysterious dog quietly watching me. The dog was motionless, staring at me with a curious expression. I fell in love with the dog at first sight. However, when I approached, the dog cautiously stepped back and kept the certain distance from me. What a poor dog! Lastly, I went to one of breakwaters in Mitsu Harbor, where I found nothing. There was neither a fish, a fisherman, nor a dog. There was just a strong wind blowing.

（昨日から日本海は大荒れです。こうした状況では、湾内や港内でスズキの釣れる可能性が高まります。とても役に立つ『山陰の釣り場総覧』によると、佐波港もそうした釣り場の一つです。とはいえ、今日の午後、車で佐波港に向かっていた時の私は、まさか他の釣り人に出会うことになるとは思っていなかったのでした。驚いたことに、午後２時頃に佐波港に到着してみると、まさに一人のルアー釣り師が釣り始めるところだったのです。彼は強風にも大波にも煩わされていないようでした。なんて熱心な釣り人なのでしょう！　しかし、私だけでなく彼もまた、佐波港では運がありませんでした。私は次に、大芦港の楡木の波止に行ってみたのですが、そこでは、不思議な犬が静かに私を見つめているのでした。その犬は動かず、好奇心の強そうな表情でじっと私を見ていました。私はその犬に一目惚れしてしまいました。しかし、私が近づくと、犬は慎重に後ずさりして、私との間に一定の距離を保つのです。なんて哀れな犬なんでしょう！　最後に私は御津港の防波堤の一つに行きましたが、そこには何もありませんでした。魚も、釣り人も、犬もいません。ただ、強い風が吹いているだけでした。）

(No. 882) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Etomo Harbor (倉内湾と恵曇港にて釣果なし)

I woke up at 7 a.m. this morning, and I had a household assignment starting at 9:30 a.m. It was a small window of time but should be enough for me to do the run-and-gun style fishing at two fishing spots. I arrived at Kurauchi Bay about 7:45 a.m. It took me just a few minutes to get out of my car and get to the shore of the bay. The sea was calm, and as is often the case with such a condition, no Japanese sea bass responded. Then, I drove to Etomo Harbor. From Nakabo, one of the breakwaters, I threw my lures until 9 a.m. when I had to quit fishing for this morning. The winds were chilly, and no fish responded to my lures, but I got satisfied by the fact that I was able to complete my run-and-gun style fishing as I had planned.

（今朝は午前７時に目覚めたのですが、午前９時半からは家の用事があるのでした。わずかな時間しかないものの、ラン＆ガン方式の釣りを２つの釣り場で行うには十分なはずです。７時45分頃、倉内湾に到着しました。車を降りて湾の岸辺にたどり着くまで、わずか数分です。海は穏やかで、そういう時にありがちなのですが、スズキからの反応は皆無です。次に、恵曇港まで車を走らせました。防波堤の１つである中防から、午前９時までルアーを投げ続け、今朝の釣りを終えました。風は冷たく、魚の反応はありませんでしたが、計画通りにラン＆ガン方式の釣りができたので満足しました。）

(No. 881) Feeble Strike at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて弱々しいストライク)

The strong crosswind was blowing at Saruwatari this morning as I had known it thanks to the weather forecast. So I took out three of my heaviest lures that couldn't be affected very much by the wind. The sea looked darker than in the summertime. The strong wind and the choppy surface made the view from Saruwatari very wintry, but it was kind of warm in spite of the wind. That deceptiveness somehow made me sure that a super monster fish was about to strike one of my lures and drag me into a historic dogfight. Indeed, there was a strike when I was using the Super Strike Little Neck Popper, but it was one of the feeblest strike I have gotten. I even felt the fish might be as big as the lure itself. Still I was grateful to the fish for playing with me.

（天気予報で事前に承知していた通り、今朝の猿渡は、強い横風が吹いていました。そこで私は、風の影響をあまり受けない、一番重たいルアーを３つ持ち出したのです。海の色は夏よりも濃くなっていました。風が強く、海面が荒れているため、猿渡からの眺めはとても冬らしいものになっていましたが、風があるにもかかわらず、何だか暖かいのでした。その見掛け倒しのせいで、どういうわけか私は、超モンスター級の魚が今にも私のルアーを襲い、私を歴史的なドッグファイトに引きずり込むのだと確信したのです。確かに、スーパーストライク・リトルネックポッパーを使っている時にストライクがあったものの、それは今までで最も弱いストライクの一つでした。ルアーと同じくらいの大きさの魚ではないかと思うほどでした。それでも私は、その魚が遊んでくれたことに感謝しています。）

(No. 880) No Fish at Kasaura Harbor (笠浦港にて釣果なし)

I was not free this early morning due to some household chores, so I had to give up going to a rocky shore of the Shimane Peninsula, such as Saruwatari in Nonami, for the yellowtail amberjack. It was because those fishing spots might have been already taken by other fishermen. I decided to go for flukes, instead. As soon as I got free, I was headed for Noi and Kasaura. I found an enough space at Kasaura Harbor. I didn’t remember whether I had fished there before. Anyway, I threw some lures that proved to be effective in catching the fluke, namely Tsunami Ball Jig etc. The bottom around the breakwater of the harbor was largely sandy, and I was ready for a strike, but no fluke seemed around.

（今朝は朝早くから家事をしていて時間がなかったので、野波の猿渡など島根半島の磯にヒラマサを狙いに行くのは断念しました。そのような釣り場には、既に他の釣り人が入っているかもしれなかったからです。私は代わりにヒラメを狙うことにしました。時間が空くとすぐに、野井と笠浦に向かいました。笠浦港には十分なスペースがありました。私は、かつて笠浦港で釣りをしたことがあるかどうか思い出せませんでした。ともかく、ツナミのボールジグなど、ヒラメを釣るのに効果的なルアーを投げてみました。笠浦港の防波堤周辺は砂地なので、ストライクを期待しましたが、ヒラメはいないようでした。）

(No. 879) No Fish at Senjojiki in Mitsu (御津の千畳敷にて釣果なし)

I wavered between Saruwatari in Nonami and other more easy-going fishing spots this morning. I was afraid that the waves might be a bit too high for me to stand at Saruwatari. In addition, there was the possibility that I would be asked to come home to do some domestic chores. So I gave up Saruwatari, for which it could take me about 20 minutes to come back to my car in the parking space. Instead, I tried Senjojiki in Mitsu. To my surprise, there was no one in Senjojiki. As is often the case with Senjojiki, when there were no anglers, there were no fish to catch.

（今朝は、野波の猿渡にするか、他のもっと気楽な釣り場にするか、揺れていました。猿渡に立つには、少し波が高いのではないかと思ったのです。加えて、家に戻って家事をするよう頼まれる可能性もありました。ですので私は、駐車スペースの車に戻るまでに20分ほどかかる猿渡を諦めたのです。代わりに、御津の千畳敷に行ってみました。驚いたことに、千畳敷には誰もいませんでした。千畳敷では往々にしてそうなのですが、釣り人がいない時には魚も釣れません。）

(No. 878) No Fish in Resumed Run-and-gun Style Fishing (再開されたラン＆ガン方式の釣りにて釣果なし)

My PENN Torque 5 spinning reel abruptly malfunctioned yesterday. I took it apart and cleaned a few parts inside, and the reel returned to its top form. I also “double-handled” the reel, which means attaching a handle to both right and left sides of the reel. In other words, my Torque 5 metamorphosed into its ultimate form. I resumed the interrupted wide-area run-and-gun style fishing this morning, starting from the eastern end of the Ohashi River. Subsequently, I tried Omisaki Bridge, Lake Nakaumi, the Sakai-suido waterway, and the rocky shore at the tip of Shichirui Harbor. My ultimate Torque 5 worked very hard and functioned very smoothly, but it didn’t seem to have any superpower to manipulate actions of fish.

（私のPENNトルク５・スピニングリールが、昨日突然、故障したのでした。分解して中の部品をクリーニングすると、リールは元通りになりました。さらに私は、リールの左右両側にハンドルを取り付ける「ダブルハンドル化」も行いました。つまり、私のトルク５は究極形態へと変身したのです。今朝は、大橋川の東端から、中断されていた広域ラン＆ガン方式の釣りを再開しました。その後、大海崎橋、中海、境水道、七類港の先端の磯を試しました。私のアルティメット・トルク５は、非常によく働き、スムーズに機能しましたが、魚の行動を操るような超能力は持っていないようです。）
