About this blog (このブログのこと)

My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

Notice and Apology about My Photos

Recently I received a comment about general portrait rights related to my photos on this blog. I have tried to be careful not to use a photo that allows readers to clearly recognize faces of fishermen unless I asked them for permission and they kindly granted me it. However, I have not practiced this policy thoroughly, and obviously this policy itself was not enough. I am sorry for that.

(No. 113) No Fish at Ohtoko-bana in Miho

It was before 6 a.m., earlier than yesterday, when I arrived at the parking space overlooking Ohtoko-bana in Izumo City. I was sure I would be the first today, but there was a car already parked at the space. I climbed down to the spot before daybreak and chatted with the lure fisherman in the dark. I told him it had not been very good at Ohtoko-bana at least for a few days. He looked a bit amazed when he knew I came all the way from Matsue City. After a while another lure fisherman came to the spot, an acquaintance of mine whom I have seen whenever I was at Ohtoko-bana lately.
The conditions seemed the same as yesterday, which means nobody caught any fish whether with bait or with lures. There was a tangled line left at the tip of the spot. I picked it up and put it in my bag ostentatiously, hoping the god (or spirit) of fishing to see my good deed. If my “Those who pick up the litter will be rewarded” theory is not familiar to you, please see my past posts No. 85 and 86. Unfortunately, the god (or spirit) might have watched another fisherman at another spot, or simply they may not like a deliberate act.
P.S. One of the lure fishermen who were with me today made a comment below about what happened after I left. A few boils appeared. Sorry it is only in Japanese.

(No. 112) No Fish at Ohtoko-bana, Kobanare, and Unnamed Farther Spots in Miho

It was about 6 a.m. when I was arriving at a parking space on the hillside overlooking Ohtoko-bana in Izumo City. I thought I would be the first to arrive there today, but there was already a glimmer at the spot. Actually I was the second, and a total of 5 fishermen, three of which used lures, came to the spot. Neither lure nor bait fishermen did catch any fish. At 7:40 a.m. I decided to move to Kobanare, another spot that lies to the east of Ohtoko-bana.
Do you want to know why I wanted to move? The title of this post would have been “No Fish at Ohtoko-bana” three times in a row if I had not moved to another spot. It would have been more boring. On my way to Kobanare, I found a lost flashlight between the rocks. It looked expensive. If you know the owner of it, please let me know or let the owner know. As for fishing, no fish was hooked at Kobanare and then at unnamed spots to the east of it. On my way back to the parking space, I talked to one of the bait fishermen at Ohtoko-bana. The lure fishermen were not around anymore. “They were already gone because of no fish,” he said to me.

(No. 111) No Fish at Ohtoko-bana in Miho

I started casting my lures shortly before 7 a.m. There was the regular lure fisherman next to me, whom I have seen whenever I came to Ohtoko-bana in Izumo City lately. He said he had been there yesterday. He had hooked two yellowtail amberjacks and caught one of them, although the dangerously high waves had allowed him to make only a handful of casts. His tale raised my expectations. The sea was much calmer today and the strong fair wind was blowing. You cannot have a better condition of the sea. However, the fish were unresponsive to our lures all the time. Then, two other lure fishermen came to the spot, and one of them soon hooked a powerful fish with a Japanese jig. Unfortunately, his tackle was not strong enough to lift the fish to the surface of the water. The line was snapped off. It was the only strike before I left the spot at noon. The fish were so inactive today that we were so active in chatting.

(No. 110) No Fish at Ohtoko-bana in Miho

The rain should have stopped before dawn, but I was still in my car at 8 a.m. and looking down at Ohtoko-bana from a parking space on the hillside. When finally I started walking down to the spot, I found there was already one fisherman standing at Ohtoko-bana. He was the guy whom I mentioned in my two previous posts. Today he was with only one rod but carrying a huge net on his back. He told me he saw some fish chasing his lure before I arrived. Excited with expectation, we kept casting our lures until about 11 a.m. but there was completely no reaction. He called it a day. I thought I would follow him soon, but the weather was drastically improving and I found it was unseasonably warm. I said to myself, “What a big change.” Writing this blog in front of the beautiful sea, I stayed at the spot much longer than I had thought.

(No. 109) Missed Powerful Fish at Ohtoko-bana in Miho

I was the second to arrive at Ohtoko-bana in Izumo City today. It was 6:40 a.m. There was a bait fisherman at the western tip of it. Another fisherman soon came to the spot. He was the lure fisherman with two rods, whom I had met the day before yesterday. He caught some nice fish last time, but today the conditions seemed worse even for him. The water was too calm. Nothing exciting happened to both bait and lure fishermen until the clock struck 11. As if the same fish as the last time came back, there was a series of boils again. However, this time the duration of it was much shorter. Just several seconds.
Fortunately, I was using a smaller jig, an Acme Kastmaster XL, which is very similar to the legendary Deadly Dick. When the second boil almost disappeared, the lure hit the water just outside the boil, not inside it. As soon as I started retrieving the lure, the fish hit it. "I got fish on!" I joyfully screamed, but the hook came out almost instantly. All that I felt was one very powerful tug. "You will catch much bigger one next time!” Another bait fisherman, who came later, comforted me.

(No. 108) No Fish at Ohtoko-bana in Miho

It was before 7 a.m. I was the first to arrive at Ohtoko-bana in Izumo City today. Another lure fisherman soon came to the spot with two rods. He looked a very serious fisherman. I said to him, "I have been here for 30 minutes with no fish," but shortly afterward he caught a nice Japanese Spanish mackerel. He tied a plastic plug to one set of his tackle. The other tackle was for metal jigs. The fish was caught with a Japanese metal jig in pink. Soon his rod got bent again. A nice fluke was caught with the jig. Only Japanese pink jigs did seem to be effective today. I had some American metal jigs such as Hopkins or Acme Kastmaster, which are kind of similar to Japanese jigs, but all of them are in silver.
Then, after 9 a.m. we saw a series of big boils on the surface. The duration of the events was very short and the first one was a bit too far, but the second one was within our reach. Unfortunately I was not using a metal jig then and the boil almost disappeared before I changed my lure, but he hooked something big with the jig. The drag of his reel made a screeching sound, but the hook came out. "The fish were chasing very small baitfish. Plugs didn't work," he said. I agreed to him, but I didn't have appropriate small jigs.
I took out a repainted Northbar Bottledarter almost desperately. This big plug brought me a longtooth grouper at Etomo Harbor in October, but the paint had peeled off on a considerable area of its surface. So I repainted it yesterday. The lure is now asking fish to bite it. This may be the first lure in history to try to verbally communicate with Japanese fish in English. The waves of so-called globalisation have reached this far, but the lure’s request was denied.

WTS: PENN Torque 5 Bail-less Spinning Reel (売ります:PENNのスピニングリール、ベールレスのトルク5)

As of August 30, 2019, this reel is not put up for sale anymore. It will return home shortly and work for one of my fishing buddies in Brooklyn. I don't delete the following post because it contains some information about a bail-less spinning reel.

I would like to sell my extra PENN Torque 5 bail-less spinning reel, which is new and completely unused, with the box including all accessories. I bought this reel in 2013, when I was in New York, as a backup in case my current Torque 5 would be broken in Japan, but now I don’t feel it is necessary. So there is a chance for a good reader of my blog in Japan to get this “Made in the USA” reel.
Please note that this is a bail-less reel, which is rare in Japan but is often used in the U.S. primarily for surf fishing, not boat fishing. In my humble opinion, a bail-less reel should be more popular among Japanese surf fishermen too. Personally I have never felt I would need a bailed reel for my fishing style. The selling price is 77,000 yen plus a delivery charge (if necessary). It must be considerably cheaper than buying it through importers. I will even add a PENN reel cover to it for free. For further detail, leave a comment with your e-mail address. I won’t publish it in my blog, but contact you via e-mail in private.
P.S. If you can come to the neighborhood of Matsue-Shinjiko-Onsen Station, I will show you how to use a bail-less reel in person at Lake Shinji and give you an opportunity to actually see and feel the reel. Even if you don’t plan to buy the reel and you are interested only in seeing it, you are very welcome. You can also see how a bail-less reel works on this YouTube video. Mr. Zeno Hromin (Surfcaster's Journal) and Mr. Ron DiCostanzo (ZeeBaaS) discussed advantages of a bail-less reel and then showed how to use it with a ZeeBaaS reel, one of famous brands of a bail-less spinning reel. “Although there is a situation on a boat that the bailed might be useful for, in surf casting, to be honest, it is nothing but trouble,” Mr. Hromin said. I do not entirely agree to him, but I prefer the simpler form of a bail-less reel. It looks cool.
