About this blog (このブログのこと)

My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 73) A Roll of Thunder around Omisaki Bridge

Last night I finally completed a time-consuming translation project, which I have worked on intermittently since the middle of June. I felt such an enormous sense of release that I declared to myself, “I definitely go fishing tomorrow morning.” However, my mother calmly warned me. “The Obon Holiday starts tomorrow. You never do an act of killing. Even just going fishing is not recommended.” The Obon Holiday is a Buddhist festival held from August 13 to 16. It is for honoring the spirits of ancestors, which are believed to visit their descendants on August 13.
Since I was a kid, my mother has kept saying the same thing around this time of the year, but I have kept going fishing anyway. This time is not an exception. I went to Omisaki Bridge at Daikon Island in Lake Nakaumi, looking for big Japanese sea bass. The water looked good, and I even saw a few schools of baitfish cause ripples on the surface. But I had to stop fishing after I made just several casts. I started hearing an ominous roll of thunder. The spirits of ancestors might have been angry.

(No. 72) No Fish at Uppurui-bana

This morning I went to Uppurui-bana in Izumo City. Uppurui is famous for its delicious seaweed, Uppurui Nori. You are not allowed to fish at Uppurui-bana from November to March because the seaweed grows on the rocky beach in the winter and local residents pick it up along the shore. Today I was heading toward Nitaki, one of the fishing spots in Uppurui-bana. The rocky path is so steep that at one point you have to climb the aluminum ladder that some fishermen kindly left. It was a thrilling trip. However, I could not get to Nitaki because I ended up in the place where I couldn't find a route to it any more. I though I took a wrong path. I turned back.
Instead I went to Ohbira to which I have been before. Unfortunately there were not so many baitfish. No boil either. I moved to the spot called Nakabasan, the very tip of Uppurui-bana. To the east of Nakabasan, there is a small island called Mashima. I swam across the water with my rod and reel to try my American lures from the island. Unfortunately I caught no fish, but the swimming part was very fun. Just getting to the island is rewarding. After I came home, I looked into the “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook”. It says certainly there is the path to Nitaki even when you think you cannot move forward anymore. All that you have to do is to be calm and to look around. I will try again.

(No. 71) No Fish under Fireworks over Lake Shinji

The annual Suigosai festival in Matsue began today. The word “Suigosai” is a combination of two words, Suigo and Sai. The latter means a festival, so “Suigosai festival” may sound a bit redundant to Japanese speakers’ ears. Suigo means a beautiful countryside along the river or the lake. That is what Matsue is.
Today and tomorrow they set off a total of 13,000 fireworks. People flock to the south and north shores of the lake to enjoy them. This evening I was standing on the small breakwater near the western end of the large crowd in the north shore. The fireworks are so beautiful that Japanese sea bass in the lake must rise to the surface to see them. They must look up at the sky. If I use surface or sub-surface lures, the lure must catch their eye. The fish cannot help biting it. That was my plan, and it didn’t work at all.

(No. 70) No Fish at Nazuna in Kataku & Mouth of Sada River in Etomo Harbor

I went to Nazuna in Kataku this evening. The path leading to the shore is in a grove and considerably higher than sea level. Views from the path are a bit scary but gorgeous. The water was churning with a steady current. It looked promising but there was one bait fisherman for the largescale blackfish and he said to me, “What are you trying to catch? Yellowtail amberjack? Japanese amberjack? Not good now.” It didn’t take very long to know he was right.
When I was going back to my car, a local lady walking a dog asked me if I caught any fish. “No fish, ma’am,” I said. The sweet lady consoled me. “These days most people don’t catch any fish. No fish is a normal state now. Don’t get too disappointed.” My disappointment was instantly gone and I was trying to catch Japanese sea bass at the mouth of Sada River in Etomo Harbor. Unfortunately no fish again, but my disappointment didn’t come back.

(No. 69) No Fish at Sakitaka-hana in Sanami

I managed to submit one of my translations before its deadline this afternoon. Grabbing my Nikon Coolpix S32 that had came home safely (I had left it in my cousin’s car), I went to Sanami to get freed from job stress temporarily. I hoped to see boils on the surface of water again. 4 days ago my cousin and I saw bigger fish chasing smaller baitfish up to the surface, and the surface looked as if it were boiling (That’s why it is called a boil). Unfortunately I didn’t see any boil this evening. Didn’t catch any fish, either.

(No. 68) No Fish at Taka-hana in Sanami

I am sorry there is no photo this time. I took pictures with my Nikon Coolpix S32, but the waterproof camera for kids has been missing. I must have left it somewhere before I came home. Anyway I was at Taka-hana in Sanami this afternoon. I was with a cousin of mine who had asked me to go fishing with him. He had said, “Any place is fine. I don’t even care if I can catch fish.” We got out around 3 p.m. We predicted that we would catch no fish partly because we started fishing in broad daylight. However, soon after we arrived at the spot, we saw a boil. Some bigger fish were chasing much smaller baitfish up the surface. Raising our hope, we cast some metal jigs, but no fish bit them. After a while, there was another and bigger boil. We cast our lures frantically, but in vain.

(No. 67) No Fish at Koura Public Beach & Sinsinbo in Etomo Harbor

A typhoon was gone. So I went to Koura Public Beach this evening. First, I swam although the water was a bit cooler than several days ago. Then I moved to the rocky area next to the sandy beach. Pieces of rubbish floated on water. It was trace of the typhoon. Because my lures often picked them up, I gave up the spot soon and moved to the tip of Sinsinbo in Etomo Harbor.
Sinsinbo is the biggest breakwater there, whose tip is about 15 feet above the water. So I took out my heaviest tackle, PENN Torque 9 spinning reel & Okinawa Manbika 110SXH rod. One fisherman took notice of my tackle. “What are you trying to catch?” As opposed to mine, his tackle was very light. He was casting a small plastic worm for Aji (Japanese horse mackerel). I said to him, “Whatever I can catch.” With an almost amazed smile, he encouraged me. “You may catch a yellowtail amberjack!!”
The tip of Sinsinbo is so high that I was almost scared. In addition, no fish bit my lures. Instead, a lot of mosquitoes started biting my body after sunset. I gave up fishing soon and went back to my car. The guy casting worms for Aji was still there. He asked, “Any catch?” I answered in a loud voice, “None!!” Then, we laughed together.
