No fish in Lake Shinji has responded to my big American plugs except for occasional needlefish appearance. Those slender fish got excited, jumping over the plugs on the surface. They looked like a flying stick. I am not sure whether they try to bite or play with the plugs. Anyway those needlefish have been only fish responsive so far this year. Naturally I get more interested in fishing in the Sea of Japan than in Lake Shinji. So I went to Kurauchi Bay this afternoon. The water inside the bay was very calm and clear. It’s so transparent that I felt I was able to see every fish in it, but I didn’t see any of them. I gave up fishing quickly. Instead, I did my first swimming and collected first “Bebe” shellfish this year. You can make nice clear soup with those shellfish. I feel the summer has arrived.
（宍道湖に、私の大きなアメリカン・プラグに反応する魚はいません。時折姿を見せるダツを除けば。あの細長い魚たちは、興奮のあまり、水面のプラグを飛び越えてしまうのです。まるで空飛ぶ棒のようです。果たして彼らは、プラグを噛もうとしているのか、それともプラグと遊ぼうとしているのか、判断がつきません。とにかく今年は、今のところ反応があった魚はダツだけなのです。私は当然、宍道湖での釣りよりも日本海での釣りに興味が湧いています。そこで今日の午後は、倉内湾に行きました。湾内の水はとても穏やかで、澄んでいました。あまりにも透明だったので、海の中の魚が全部見えるような気がしましたが、一匹も見えませんでした。私はすぐに釣りを諦めました。代わりに、今年最初の海水浴をし、今年最初のベベ貝を採りました。この貝で美味しいすまし汁が作れるのです。ついに夏が到来したように感じます。）
