Almost all of my plugs are designed for catching the striped bass (striper) in the East coast or amberjacks in the West coast of the United States. They are not small enough for catching the Japanese black porgies (chinu) in Japan. I have a few small plugs, but they are difficult to throw with my heavy tackle. So I devised a unique method to throw them (No. 1303/1304), but it didn’t work very well (No black porgies responded to it). Today I came up with another idea. How about using the snapper popper rig? The juvenile bluefish are called “snappers” or “snapper blues” in the U.S., and people use the snapper popper rig to catch them. The weighted front float acts as a popper. It makes a splash on the surface to excite snappers. The float is followed by a small hook with tubing, which is about 60 cm (23 in.) away from the float. A snapper gets excited with the splash, finds the tubed hook behind the float, thinks it’s food, and bites the hook. I will try the snapper popper rig for the black porgies and report to you if I catch the fish on it.
