(No. 1222) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて釣果なし)

I checked my older posts of last summer. I realized I often went to Safuki-bana in Nonami a year ago. I even fought against vicious wasps (and won). On the other hand, I have not gone to Safuki-bana or Saruwatari since June 21 this year. I am wondering how. I might have become a lazy fisherman? Or, I might be getting too old? Or, everything is due to this record-breaking heat? I cannot say this heat has not contributed to the fact that I go to only Kurauchi Bay these days. Even early in the morning, I feel it’s already too hot and reluctant to go to a serious rocky shore such as Safuki-bana because I am concerned that I would be too tired or even suffer heatstroke. However, now I am getting a bit bored with the gorgeous view of Kurauchi Bay. Hmm.

（昨年の夏の投稿を見直してみました。１年前、私は野波のサフキ鼻によく行っていました。凶暴なスズメバチと戦いさえしたのです（そして勝った）。一方で今年は、６月21日以来、サフキ鼻にも猿渡にも行っていません。どうしてでしょう？　怠惰な釣り人になってしまったのでしょうか？　それとも、年を取りすぎてしまったのか？　それとも、すべてはこの記録的な猛暑のせいなのか？　最近は倉内湾ばかりに行ってしまうのも、この暑さのせいでないとは言い切れません。朝早くから、私は既に暑さを感じており、サフキ鼻のような本格的な磯に行くと、疲れ過ぎるか、あるいは熱中症になるのではないかと心配で、ためらってしまうのです。しかし、倉内湾の素晴らしい景色にも、今は少し飽きてきました。うーん。）

(No. 1221) Nothing Left Behind at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて落とし物なし)

Those who had left the things behind around the entrance to Kurauchi Bay might have read the previous post of this blog. Or, one of you, my beloved readers, might have kindly found them and said to them, “You should stop dumping your trash.” Anyway, thank you so much. There was nothing left behind two days in a row. As for fishing, there was no fish…… How many days in a row? I don’t remember.

（倉内湾の入り口に忘れ物をした人たちは、このブログの前回の記事を読んでくれたのかもしれません。あるいは、愛すべき読者の皆さんのうちのどなたかが、彼らを見つけ、「ゴミ捨てはやめなさい」と声をかけてくださったのかもしれませんね。ともかく、本当にありがとうございました。２日続けて、何も残されていませんでした。釣りの方はといえば、魚は釣れませんでしたが……果たして、何日続けてなのでしょうか？　思い出せません。）

(No. 1220) Lost and Found at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて遺失物保管)

If you have any idea of who has left things in the grass around the entrance to Kurauchi Bay yesterday and today, please let me know. A few empty cans of alcoholic beverages and empty packages of some snacks were left behind two days in a row. Enjoying the drinks, they might have also appreciated the gorgeous view of Kurauchi Bay. By the way, I sometimes feel pity for small creatures, such as earthworms, because I suppose they cannot fully appreciate the view of Kurauchi Bay due to their small brains. Even though, they don't leave anything behind. I would like to have a sincere discussion about the conservation of nature with those who left the things behind, if their brains are actually bigger than those of earthworms.

（もしもあなたが、昨日と今日、倉内湾の入り口付近の草むらに忘れ物をした人をご存知でしたら、どうか私にお知らせください。アルコール飲料の空き缶とつまみの空き袋が、２日続けて、置き忘れられていたのです。彼らは、お酒を楽しみながら、倉内湾の絶景も堪能したのかもしれませんね。ところで私は時々、ミミズのような小さな生き物を不憫（ふびん）に思います。なぜなら彼らの脳は小さくて、倉内湾の風景を十分に堪能できないだろうと思うからです。でも、たとえそうであっても、ミミズたちは忘れ物などしません。私は、忘れ物をした人たちと自然保護について真剣に話し合いたいと思っています。もしも彼らの脳がミミズの脳よりも本当に大きければ、の話ですが。）

(No. 1219) Still No Fish but Refreshing Swimming at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にていまだ釣果なしも、すがすがしい水泳)

A few days ago I read an ominous news article. It said we had just broken the record of the hottest day in human history. Could anyone please stand up and remind the earth? “Remember. You are not participating in the Paris Olympic Games.” I hope only athletes will break records. Not a planet, please!  Working in an air-conditioned room without a break would make me unhealthy. So I keep going to Kurauchi Bay almost every afternoon. Still there is no fish, but I swim. How refreshing!

（数日前、不吉な新聞記事を読みました。「人類史上最も暑い日」の記録が更新されたというのです。どなたか立ち上がって、地球に思い出させてやっていただけないでしょうか。「君はパリ五輪に参加しているわけではないのだよ」と。記録を破るのはアスリートだけであってほしいものです。惑星は勘弁！　エアコンの効いた部屋で休みなく仕事をしていると健康を害します。だから私はほぼ毎日、午後に倉内湾に出かけます。魚はいませんが、泳ぎます。なんて爽快なんでしょう！）

(No. 1218) Consecutively No Fish at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて引き続き釣果なし)

There are no living creatures in Kurauchi Bay. That’s what I felt yesterday and today. In order to escape from the excruciating heat, I went to the bay two afternoons in a row. I didn’t see any sign of fish in the bay. I had to dive into the sea because otherwise I would suffer heatstroke. I didn’t see any small fish even when I was in the water. All that I saw were floating seaweeds.

（倉内湾には生き物がいません。昨日も今日もそう感じました。ひどい暑さから逃れるために、２日続けて、午後に倉内湾に行きました。湾内に魚の気配は全くありませんでした。熱中症になってしまうので、海に飛び込まざるを得ませんでした。水の中にいてさえも小魚は見当たりません。見えるのは漂う海藻ばかりでした。）

(No. 1217) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて釣果なし)

I feel I am still recovering from the mysterious infectious disease that made me bedridden for a few days. My physical is not yet 100%. So this hot afternoon I went to Kurauchi Bay. I wanted to do a moderate exercise in order to expedite my recovery. Fishing and swimming in Kurauchi Bay made my body refreshingly tired. It was as if everything about the bay seemed to help me recover except for some trash, such as an empty lure package, cigarette butts, and a tangle of fishing line.

（数日間寝たきりになった謎の感染症から、まだ回復していないような気がします。私の体調はまだ100％ではありません。なのでこの暑い午後、私は倉内湾に行きました。回復を早めるために適度な運動をしたかったのです。倉内湾で釣りをしたり泳いだりして、体は爽快に疲れました。まるで、湾のすべてが、私の回復を助けてくれているかのようでした。ルアーの空き箱、タバコの吸殻、もつれた釣り糸などのゴミを例外として。）

(No. 1216) Comparison between Two Series of Newell Reels (ニューウェル・リールの２つのシリーズの比較)

I recently obtained Newell S220-5 conventional reel and love it. I also own Newell G235-F. This post is about one of differences between the “G” and “S” series and how I decided to sell my G235-F. In general, people seem to prefer the “G” series, which is older than the “S.” I think it’s partly because some important parts remained metal, not graphite, in the “G” series. For example, the bearing caps of my S220-5 are black plastics. On the other hand, those of G235-F are metal. Indeed plastic caps look and feel cheaper and weaker, but I prefer the S220-5’s plastic caps. Because, unlike the metal counterparts in the “G” series, I don’t have to use those plastic caps. In other words, I can leave the two bearings always exposed to the outside. So now I don’t have to disassemble the reel or screw off caps to oil the bearings. After each fishing, I submerse the reel in freshwater and then just oil the exposed bearings. That’s all. And I love such simplicity. So, using one of the most popular auction sites in Japan, I just put my G235-F for auction. It’s only for bidders in Japan (Sorry for people overseas). In general I don’t like to own too many fishing tackles. Most of all, I hope someone interested to enjoy the wonderful world of Newell reels.

(No. 1215) No Fish at Swollen Lake Shinji (増水した宍道湖にて釣果なし)

A historically large amount of rainfall has dropped in the Sanin Region including Matsue and Izumo Cities. A part of the seaside winding road to Hinomisaki and the Ketakake Peninsula in Izumo collapsed, and people over there are still isolated. I am not sure when I would feel like going again to some rocky shores, such as Safuki-bana and Saruwatari in Nonami, because I am afraid that a similar collapse might happen there too. My safest choice was to go to Lake Shinji. Although it’s very swollen, there seems no imminent danger. The surface of the lake was so elevated that the usual lakeside was in the water and I had to throw my lure from the much higher bank behind the lakeside shore. The height reminded me of the fishing at a rocky shore facing the Sea of Japan. I had a chat with one of regular lure fishermen, and we agreed that in recent years there might be more the Japanese black porgies in the lake than our coveted Japanese sea bass.

（松江市や出雲市を含む山陰地方に、記録的な大雨が降りました。出雲の日御碕や桁掛半島へと続く、海沿いの曲がりくねった道の一部が崩落し、あちらの人々は今も孤立しています。野波のサフキ鼻や猿渡などの磯に行きたい、という気持ちにいつなれるか分かりません。同じような崩落が起きるのではないかという不安があるのです。一番安全なのは宍道湖に行くことでした。かなり増水していますが、差し迫った危険はないようです。湖面がかなり上昇したせいで、いつもの湖岸は水に浸かっており、湖岸の後ろのずっと高い土手からルアーを投げねばなりませんでした。その高さは、日本海に面した磯での釣りを思い出させました。ルアー釣りの常連の一人と話をしたところ、近年、湖には、私たちが追い求めるスズキよりも黒鯛（チヌ）の方が多いのではないか、ということで意見が一致しました。）
