(No. 539) No Fish at 5 Spots in Nonami, Sanami, Owashi, Kataku, and Etomo Areas (野波、佐波、大芦、片句、そして恵曇地区の５カ所にて釣果なし)

The weather forecast said that the height of waves would be 3 meters this afternoon. Generally I don’t go to any rocky shore facing the ocean when the wave height is more than 1.5 meters, but Naka-bana in Nonami was the first fishing spot that I tried today. I had found a balcony-like place at Naka-bana and wanted to try the place when the waves were higher than 1.5 meters. As I had expected, the waves hardly reached the place. However, the place was exposed to such a strong crosswind that I could not cast my lures comfortably. I had to leave the place after I made only several casts. Then, I did the run-and-gun style fishing across a total of 5 areas. After leaving Naka-bana, I went to Sanami Harbor, Owashi Harbor, Kurauchi Bay, and Etomo Harbor. I hoped I would catch a Japanese sea bass at one of them, but nothing happened.

（天気予報によると、今日の午後の波の高さは３メートルになるとのことでした。私はふつう、波が1.5メートルより高い時には大海に面する磯には行かないのですが、今日、私が最初に試した釣り場は、野波の中鼻でした。中鼻にバルコニーのような場所を見つけていたので、波が1.5メートルより高い時にその場所を試してみたかったのです。予想通り、その場所に波はほとんど届きませんでした。しかしその場所は強い横風にさらされていたため、快適にルアーを投げることができませんでした。私は、ほんの数投だけして、その場所を離れざるを得ませんでした。それから私は、ラン＆ガン方式の釣りを５つの地区を股にかけて行いました。中鼻の後は、佐波港、大芦港、倉内湾、そして恵曇港へ行ったのです。どこかでスズキが釣れるのではないかと期待しましたが、何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 538) No Fish at Naka-bana in Nonami (野波の中鼻にて釣果なし)

When I arrived at the parking space for either Saruwatari or Naka-bana in Nonami slightly before 8 a.m., there was a car left around the entrance to the path in the woods leading to Saruwatari. So I parked my car on the Naka-bana side of the parking space and entered into a different path from the one leading to Saruwatari. There was a weak swell around Naka-bana, but the sea was calm in general. The fisherman at Saruwatari was a bait fisherman, and I did not see him catching any big fish during my stay at Naka-bana. The same was true for me. Nothing exciting happened to me, either. I left the spot about 10 a.m.

（午前８時少し前、野波の猿渡あるいは中鼻へ行くための駐車スペースに到着してみると、猿渡へと至る林の小道の入口付近に、１台の車が残されていました。ですので私は、駐車スペースの中鼻の側に車を駐めて、猿渡へ行くのとは違う小道に入っていきました。中鼻周辺には弱いうねりがあったものの、海はだいたい平穏でした。猿渡の釣り人はエサ釣り師でしたが、私が中鼻にいる間、大きな魚は何も釣れなかったようです。同じことが私にも言えます。私にもまた何も刺激的なことは起きませんでした。私は午前10時頃に釣り場を離れました。）

(No. 537) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

This late afternoon I drove to Etomo Harbor for the Japanese Spanish mackerel or the Japanese sea bass. Before I started casting my favorite lures from the tip of Nanbo, one of breakwaters in the harbor, two pairs of fishermen had talked to me consecutively and I enjoyed chats with both the pairs. They were intrigued by my conspicuous tackle (a white rod with a PENN Jigmaster reel and a big plug). They were so likable that I happily explained why my tackle was so different, referring to this blog. Then, I fished alone at the tip of Nanbo. Although nothing happened to my lures by the time I left the spot at sunset, I remained happy because of the chats.

（今日の午後遅く、サワラかスズキを狙って、恵曇港へ行きました。その防波堤の一つ、南防の先端からお気に入りのルアーを投げ始める前に、２組の釣り人が連続して私に話しかけてこられ、私はどちらとも楽しい会話をしました。彼らは、人目を引く私のタックル（白い竿に、リールはPENNのジグマスター、そして大きなプラグ）に興味をもたれたのです。とても好ましい人たちだったので、私は、このブログに言及しながら、なぜ他の人のタックルと異なるのか喜んで説明しました。その後、私は南防の先端で一人で釣りました。日没時に釣り場を離れるまでの間、私のルアーには何も起きませんでしたが、彼らとのおしゃべりのおかげで、私は幸せなままでした。）

(No. 536) No Fish at Etomo, Sanami, and Owashi Harbors (恵曇港、佐波港、そして大芦港にて釣果なし)

The storm that broke yesterday was gone by this morning. The height of waves had reached 6 meters, so that I hoped I might catch a Japanese sea bass inside a harbor this morning. First I tried Etomo Harbor and then went to Sanami and Owashi Harbors. Although any harbor wasn't up to my expectations, I felt satisfied because I had an opportunity to help a local resident at Sanami Harbor to clean up the litter scattered on the road.

（昨日起きた嵐は、今朝までには、過ぎ去っていました。波の高さが６メートルにも達していたので、今朝はどこかの港内でスズキが釣れるのではないかと期待しました。まず最初に恵曇港を試し、次に、佐波港と大芦港を試しました。どの港も期待はずれでしたが、私は満足しました。なぜなら佐波港で、路上に散乱したゴミを片付ける地元の方のお手伝いができたからです。）

(No. 535) Picking Up Litter and Casting Practice at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にてゴミ拾いとキャスティング練習)

When I was climbing down to the shore of Kurauchi Bay this afternoon, I noticed there were some lost articles on a big rock at the shore. Someone might have lost the following articles; cigarette butts, a plastic bottle of green tea, a plastic package for a shock leader, an empty blister pack for pills, and some shreds of fishing line. I picked them up and then returned to my car. I hurried to a nearby police station to hand in those precious lost articles...... Of course, I am kidding. I just picked them up and then started my casting practice with PENN Jigmaster 500 while trying to control my irritation.

（今日の午後、倉内湾の岸辺へと降りていった私は、岸辺の大岩の上に落とし物があることに気づきました。以下の品物を忘れていった人がいるようです。タバコの吸殻数本、抹茶のペットボトル、ショックリーダーが入っていたパッケージ、錠剤が入っていたブリスターパック、そして釣り糸の切れ端がいくつか。私はそれらを拾い、車に戻りました。そして、最寄りの警察署へと急ぎ、それら貴重な落とし物を届け出たのです……。というのは、もちろん冗談です。私はただそれらを拾い、そして、PENNジグマスター500のキャスティング練習を開始しました。いらだちを抑えようと務めながら。）

(No. 534) Missed Japanese Sea Bass at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にてスズキを逃す)

This morning I went to Saruwatari in Nonami in order to practice casting with the PENN Jigmaster 500. Casting practice at Saruwatari? Casting practice at one of the best fishing spots in the Shimane Peninsula? It sounds like doing karaoke practice at Carnegie Hall in New York, but it’s true. The primary purpose of today’s fishing is to get used to casting with the old conventional reel. Even so, a lure was being thrown at every cast, and there is always the possibility that a fish will respond to the lure if it is thrown. That’s what happened to me when I was throwing my Hopkins No=Eql. I saw a medium-sized Japanese sea bass chasing and biting the lure clearly. Unfortunately, due to my sloppiness, the barbless hook of the lure came out when the fish shook its head.

（今朝は、PENNのジグマスター500のキャスティング練習をするために、野波の猿渡へ行きました。猿渡で、キャスティング練習？　つまり、島根半島有数の釣り場で、キャスティング練習？　まるで、ニューヨークのカーネギーホールでカラオケの練習をするような感じですが、本当なんだから、しょうがありません。今日の釣りの主要目的は、この古い両軸リールでのキャスティングに慣れることでした。とはいえ、キャストのたびにルアーが投げられているわけであり、ルアーが投げられている以上、魚が反応する可能性は常にあるわけです。ホプキンス No=Eqlを投げている時に、それが起きました。中型のスズキがルアーを追いかけ、食いつくのがはっきり見えたのです。あいにく、私の注意不足のせいで、魚が頭を振ると、ルアーのバーブレスフック（カエシがつぶしてある針）は外れてしまいました。）

(No. 533) Casting Practice with Old PENN Jigmaster 500 at Etomo Harbor (恵曇港にて古いPENNジグマスター500のキャスティング練習)

When I was traveling in the Chubu district at the end of last year, I went to one of secondhand fishing tackle shops and bought a PENN Jigmaster 500 at a bargain price. I had tried some old PENN conventional reels for about a year in order to find one best suited for my current fishing style. I had always thought that the Jigmaster was too big and heavy for comfortable casting. However, as soon as I held it in my hand at the shop, I noticed it might not be the case at least with the old Jigmaster with a plastic spool. My intuition proved to be correct at Etomo Harbor.

（昨年末に中部地方を旅していた時、私は中古の釣具屋に行き、PENNのジグマスター500を格安の値段で買いました。約１年間ほど、私は、PENNの古い両軸リールをいろいろと試し、現在の自分の釣りのスタイルに最も合うのはどれか探してきたのでした。私はずっと、ジグマスターは、快適にルアーを投げるためには大きすぎ、重すぎると考えてきました。しかし、その中古店で手に取るやいなや、少なくともプラスチックスプールを搭載した古いジグマスターは、そうではないかもしれないと感じたのです。その直感の正しかったことが、恵曇港で証明されました。）

As PENN’s old catalogue explained, the plastic spool has Easy-Thumb Flanges. Although the Squidder has the similar flanges, the spool of Jigmaster is larger and that’s why it is easier to use my thumb on the spool. With the Jigmaster 500, I feel I finally realized how to use my thumb for old PENN conventional reels. In addition, it is easier to use lures with the Jigmaster thanks to the higher gear ratio (1:4). Indeed, the reel is “FOR FASTER RETRIEVE AND LIVELIER LURE ACTION.” I don’t use jigs very often, and that was another reason why I had not given serious consideration to the Jigmaster. I was wrong. Now I feel the reel was designed for not only jigs but also other types of lures, exactly as advertised in the catalogue. This old Jigmaster does not have any ball bearing, and it is also a good point for me.

（PENNの古いカタログで説明されている通り、そのプラスチックスプールには「簡単な親指操作のためのフランジ」が付いています。スクイダーにも同様なフランジはありますが、ジグマスターのスプールの方が大きく、そのため親指でスプールを操作するのが楽なのです。ジグマスター500を使うことで、私はついに、PENNの古い両軸リールに対してどう親指を使うべきか理解できた気がしています。加えて、ジグマスターのギア比は高いので（1:4）、ルアー操作が容易なのです。たしかにこのリールは「より速いリトリーブとより生き生きしたルアー・アクションのための」ものです。私はあまりジグを使わないので、そのため、ジグマスターのことを真剣に考えてこなかったという面もあります。私の誤解でした。今では私は、ジグマスターは、ジグのためだけでなく、他の種類のルアーのためのリールでもあると感じています。まさにカタログで宣伝されている通りなのです。この古いジグマスターにはボールベアリングも使われておらず、それもまた私には高ポイントです。）

(No. 532) No Fish at Etomo Harbor (恵曇港にて釣果なし)

I wish you a happy New Year. Since my last post I had been busy preparing for the release of my annual New Year’s rap. What is New Year’s rap? As detailed in my past posts (No. 338), I decided not to send New Year’s cards anymore when I came back to Japan in 2014. Instead, I started writing and recording rap songs every year. If you are interested, you can listen to them here although the lyrics are all in Japanese and not related to fishing. This afternoon I got freed from the pressure of New Year’s rap and drove to Etomo Harbor for young Japanese Spanish mackerels. There were many fishermen at the harbor. Baitfish were plenty along some breakwaters. I wanted to see anyone catch the fish, but nobody seemed lucky as far as I could see.

（明けましておめでとうございます。前回の投稿をしてから、私は、毎年恒例の年賀ラップのリリース準備で忙しくしていました。年賀ラップとは何でしょう？　過去の投稿（No. 338）で詳しく語っているのですが、2014年に帰国した私は、年賀状を送ることをやめてしまったのです。代わりに毎年、ラップを書いて録音することにしたのでした。歌詞はすべて日本語で、釣りにも関係ない内容ですが、もしもご興味があれば、ここで聴くことができます。今日の午後は、年賀ラップのプレッシャーからも解放されたので、サゴシ（若いサワラ）を狙って恵曇港へ行きました。港には数多くの釣り人の姿がありました。防波堤の周囲にはベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）が豊富でした。誰かにサゴシが釣れないかな、と思っていましたが、私の目が届く範囲では、誰にも釣れなかったようです。）
