(No. 215) No Fish at Honjima Island in Kagawa Prefecture (香川県の本島にて釣果なし)

I just came back from Honjima Island in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. As we did last year in Shodo Island, the old university classmates got together again after one-year interval to discuss a book just for fun. The selected book this year was Taro Okamoto’s Today’s Art. The late Taro Okamoto was a famous artist who was probably best known for his catchphrase, “Art is an explosion!” The impact of his saying this catchphrase was so strong that I had thought he was an instinctive crazy artist rather than an intellectual one. This book drastically changed my impression of him. As a result of our discussion, we reached a conclusion that this book is a masterpiece that is not only epoch-making but also timeless, and it should get more new readers.

（香川県丸亀市の本島から、今、戻ってきたところです。昨年、小豆島でやったのと同じように、大学時代の同級生が一年ぶりに集い、ただ楽しみのために、一冊の本について議論したのです。今年選ばれた本は、岡本太郎の『今日の芸術』でした。故岡本太郎は、おそらく、「芸術は爆発だ！」というキャッチフレーズによって最もよく知られている有名な芸術家です。このキャッチフレーズを口にする際の彼のインパクトはとても強く、私はずっと、彼のことを、知的な芸術家というよりは、本能的でクレイジーな芸術家だと思ってきました。この本は、そういう彼の印象を根底から変えてしまいました。議論の結果、この本は、一時代を画すと同時に、時代を超越してもいる名著であり、より多くの新しい読者を獲得すべきだということで、私たちの意見は一致しました。）

As for fishing in Honjima Island, I tried it twice. The first opportunity was at Tomari Harbor yesterday afternoon while my classmates were seeing works of art exhibited as part of Setouchi Triennale 2016, and the second was at Kasajima Harbor early in the morning today while they were still in their beds. I did not catch any fish at either opportunity, but I enjoyed very much just casting my favorite lures from a small beautiful island toward the Seto Inland Sea of Japan.

（本島における釣りについていえば、私は二度、挑戦しました。最初の機会は、昨日の午後に訪れました。同級生たちが瀬戸内国際芸術祭2016の展示作品を鑑賞している間、泊港で竿を出したのです。二度目は、今朝のことでした。同級生たちがまだ眠っている時に、笠島港で釣ってみたのです。二回とも、魚は釣れませんでしたが、小さな美しい島から、瀬戸内海へ向かってお気に入りのルアーを投げるのは、とても楽しいものでした。）

(No. 214) No Fish at Sanami Harbor (佐波港にて釣果なし)

Typhoon No. 18 had passed over Matsue by this morning, and I realized that I would not be as busy today as I had expected. So I had the luxury of going to Sanami Harbor this afternoon to fish for one hour and a half before sunset. As you may already know from my past posts, I have been intrigued by the commentary on the harbor in the “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook.” This very useful guidebook says that you may catch Japanese sea bass inside the harbor when the sea outside the harbor is rough and muddy rainwater flows into it. Since I read this commentary, I have tried this small harbor when I thought the condition might fit the bill, but I have not caught any fish. Today was not an exception and it was a bummer of course, but I enjoyed nice chats with some friendly fishermen who came to catch squids in vain. Talking to them was satisfying enough.

（台風18号は今朝までには松江を通り過ぎてしまい、そして私はと言えば、考えていたほどには今日は忙しくならないことに気づいたのでした。ですので午後、私は佐波港へ行くという贅沢を味わい、日没前の一時間半、釣りをしたのです。以前の投稿をお読みになられた方は既に御存知かもしれませんが、『山陰の釣り場総覧』にある佐波港の解説文に、私は興味をそそられています。大変有用なこのガイドブックによると、外海の時化（しけ）た時、そして濁った雨水が港に注ぎ込む時、港内でスズキがよく釣れるのだそうです。この解説を読んで以来、その条件にぴったり合っていると思える時に、私はこの小さい港で釣りをしてきたのですが、まだ何も釣れたことがありません。今日も例外ではありませんでした。もちろんがっかりしたのですが、イカを釣りに来られていたのに釣果のなかった愛想の良い数人の皆さんとの会話を楽しむことができました。それだけで十分に満足でした。）

(No. 213) Squid and Turtle’s Hand at Saruwatari and Swimming with Tackle at Katsurajima (猿渡にてイカと亀の手、桂島にてタックルごと水泳)

Typhoon No.18 is looming on the horizon and I will be very busy from tomorrow. So I decided to take full advantage of good weather today. I got to Saruwatari in Nonami about 6 a.m. I had a hunch that finally I would catch a yellowtail amberjack today, but all that I hooked was a poor small squid by accident. I gave up fishing at 9 a.m. and started swimming in a nearby inlet with a beautiful waterfall. I videotaped the Japanese goose barnacle, a tasty crustacean called Kamenote (turtle’s hand) in Japanese. They repeatedly opened and closed their feelers (or foot?) in sync with the waves in order to catch something to eat in the water.

（台風18号が接近している上、私は明日から忙しくなるのでした。そのため私は、今日の好天を最大限に活用することにしました。午前６時頃、私は野波の猿渡に到着しました。今日こそはついにヒラマサが釣れるに違いないという予感がありましたが、釣れたのは、可哀想に針に偶然引っかかってしまった小さなイカのみでした。午前９時に釣りをあきらめた私は、美しい滝のある近くの入り江で泳ぎ始めました。日本語では「亀の手」と呼ばれる、食べると美味しい甲殻類をビデオで撮影しました。亀の手たちは、波の動きに合わせてその触手（それとも脚？）を開いたり閉じたりして、水中の餌を捉えようとしています。）

Then I drove to Kaka. I left my car at one of parking lots and crossed the tiny bridge to Katsurajima. It was the first time that I had visited this small island, which lies on the west of Kaka Harbor. I saw some fishermen catching squids and others the largescale blackfish. I cast some lures without much anticipation because it was already noon. Then I found there is a smaller island called Kurishima to the north of Katsurajima. The gap between them is narrow but too broad to jump over. Because I wanted to take full advantage of good weather today, I swam to the smaller island with my tackle. In this way I managed to make several casts from Kurishima. I did not catch anything despite the great hustle, but at least I can say I did everything I could do today.

（それから私は加賀へ行きました。駐車場の一つに車を置いて、桂島に至る小さな橋を渡りました。加賀港の西に位置するこの小さな島を訪れるのは初めてでした。イカを釣っている人もいれば、メジナを釣っている人もいます。もう正午になっていたので、私は大して期待せずにルアーを投げました。栗島という、さらに小さな島が、桂島の北にありました。二つの島の間隔は狭いのですが、飛び越えるには広すぎるのでした。今日の好天を最大限に利用したかった私は、タックルを持って、栗島まで泳ぎました。そうすることで私は、栗島からルアーを投げることができたのです。そんなふうに大いにハッスルしたにも関わらず、何も釣れませんでした。でも少なくとも、今日できることは全部やった、と言えるのでした。）

(No. 212) No Fish at Zendana in Tayu (手結の膳棚にて釣果なし)

As I had expected, there were many cars already parked around Tayu Harbor at 5:20 a.m. I went straight to Zendana, a low fishing spot between the east breakwater of the harbor and Enobori, a more popular fishing spot that I had been once. Zendana faces two small isles, which are collectively called Wariishijima. According to the very useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook,” a good current running through the waterway between Zendana and Wariishijima can make Zendana a deceptively good spot to catch the yellowtail amberjack. Unlike all of the past trips to the area, I found there was a good current running along the shore today.

（予測していた通り、午前５時20分の手結港周辺には、既に多くの車が駐車されていたのでした。私は膳棚に直行しました。膳棚とは、手結港の東防波堤と犬掘（かつて一度行ったことのある人気の釣り場）の間にある、足場の低い釣り場です。膳棚は２つの小島に面しており、それらは合わせて割石島と呼ばれています。大変有用なガイドブック『山陰の釣り場総覧』によると、膳棚と割石島の間の水路を良い潮が流れる時、膳棚は、その見かけとは異なって、ヒラマサの良い釣り場になるのだそうです。この地域へのこれまでの釣行時と異なり、今日は、岸沿いに良い潮が流れていることに気づきました。）

I kept casting my favorite lures with elevated anticipation before 9 a.m., but nothing happened. There were bait fishermen on both sides of me, but a largescale blackfish caught by the fisherman on my right was an only legitimate fish that they caught. It was unseasonably warm, and the sea was calm despite the current. I told the bait fishermen on both sides not to be appalled and then started swimming. It felt incredibly refreshing in the water. Actually it was so refreshing that I decided to drive to Kurauchi Bay, a bay between Tayu and Kataku, in order to enjoy swimming in earnest. The sea was so beautiful and calm that I took underwater pictures.

（私は大いに期待しながら、午前９時までお気に入りのルアーを投げました。しかし、何も起きません。私の左右にはエサ釣り師がおられましたが、右側のお方が釣られた一匹のメジナだけが、唯一の真っ当な釣果でした。季節外れの陽気であり、潮は流れていましたが、海は穏やかでした。私は両隣のエサ釣り師に「びっくりさんでくださいよ」とお伝えしてから、泳いだのでした。水の中は、信じられないほど爽やかです。実際、あまりにも爽やかだったので、手結と片句の間にある倉内湾まで車で移動し、私は真剣に水泳を楽しみました。とても美しく穏やかな海だったので、水中写真を撮りました。）

(No. 211) Bargain Sale of American Saltwater Lures at Toeisha (冬營舎にてアメリカのソルトルアーを特価販売中)

When I came back to Japan in 2014, I took many American saltwater lures with me. I have since lost some of them due to unfortunate events such as line break or lure’s being stuck among the rocks in the sea. I occasionally had to order new lures online to replenish my arsenal. Shipping from the U.S. is not cheap, so I tend to order as many lures as possible at the same shipping for an economic reason. As a result, I may have too many lures. In general, I am not comfortable with owning many things. So I am selling some of my lures at Toeisha, a small secondhand bookstore and also a cafe in Nishichamachi, Matsue City.
