(No. 210) No Fish around Terashima in Tayu (手結の寺島周辺にて釣果なし)

The weatherman had said that it would rain this morning. So I did not plan to go fishing today, but somehow I woke up at 4:30 a.m. without having set an alarm. Why? Yesterday I wanted to wake up at 4:30 a.m. but overslept even with an alarm. Today I woke up without an alarm. Anyway, I found that the rain was not falling and it wouldn’t until 9 or 10 a.m. according to the weatherman. I picked up my tackle in a hurry and drove to Tayu. I didn’t have much time this morning, so my only option was Terashima, a small island that is part of Tayu Harbor.

（天気予報によると今朝は雨が降るとのことでした。従って今日は釣りに行くつもりはなかったのですが、どういうわけか、目覚ましをかけてもいないのに、午前４時30分に目が覚めました。いったい、なぜ？　午前４時30分に起きたかった昨日は、目覚ましをかけていても寝過ごしたくせに、今日は、目覚ましなしで起きてしまったのです。ともかく、目覚めた時に雨は降っておらず、天気予報によると９〜10時までは降らないとのことでした。私は慌てて釣り道具を手に取ると、手結へと向かいました。今朝はそんなに時間が取れないので、私の唯一の選択肢は、手結港の一部である寺島でした。）

First I tried Terashima-no-nishi. The sea was as calm as yesterday. No, it was even calmer. My Guppy Lure’s 2 oz. Mini, one of American pencil poppers with which I have really wanted to catch fish, splashed its way across the flat surface. Nothing happened. Then, I went to Terashima-no-kita, in which I found three lure fishermen trying to catch squids but instead catching barracudas and baby scorpion fish. They generously let me cast my lures at the west end of the spot, but nothing happened. After picking up the litter and chatting with them, I came back to Terashima-no-nishi to swim. It was about 7 a.m., still early in the morning, but the calm water was never too cold but just refreshing.

（私はまず「寺島の西」で釣りました。海は昨日と同様に穏やかです。いや、昨日よりも穏やかなぐらい。「このルアーでどうしても魚を釣りたい」とずっと思っているアメリカのペンシル・ポッパー、グッピールアーの２オンス・ミニが、バシャバシャと飛沫をあげて平らな水面を進みます。でも、何も起きません。続いて私は「寺島の北」へ行きました。そこには、３人のルアー釣り師がいらして、イカを釣ろうとされていましたが、カマスや小さいカサゴが釣れているのでした。彼らは寛大にも、釣り場の西端で私にルアーを投げさせてくれました。でも、何も起きません。ゴミを拾い、彼らとおしゃべりをしてから、私は「寺島の西」に戻り、泳ぎました。それは朝の７時頃、つまりまだまだ早朝でしたが、穏やかな水は決して冷た過ぎることはなく、ただ爽やかだったのでした。）

(No. 209) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

Yesterday I tried new fishing spots in Udo, Izumo City. Today I went to a familiar spot, Saruwatari in Nonami, Matsue City. I had planned to wake up at 4:30 a.m. and go to one of familiar fishing spots without wasting any time, in order to cast lures as many times as possible and catch a yellowtail amberjack. The plan was perfect, but I hugely overslept this morning. I woke up about 7 a.m. First, I went to Sanami Harbor. I found many cars at a parking space around the harbor. Sakitaka-hana in Sanami was my candidate, but the spot was already crowded. Then, I drove to Saruwatari in Nonami.

（昨日は、出雲市の鵜峠にある新しい釣り場を試しました。今日は、松江市の野波にある猿渡という、慣れ親しんだ釣り場へ行きました。午前４時30分に起床し、一刻も無駄にすることなく馴染みの釣り場へ向かい、できるだけたくさんルアーを投げて、ヒラマサを仕留める。そういう計画を立てていたのです。完璧な計画だったのですが、私は大幅に寝坊してしまったのでした。今朝は午前７時頃に目が覚めました。私はまず、佐波港に行きました。港の横の駐車スペースには、たくさんの車が置かれています。佐波の先高鼻は候補地の一つでしたが、すでに満員でした。次に私は、野波の猿渡に行ってみました。）

I was almost sure that I would see a few cars parked at a parking space for Saruwatari, but when I arrived at the space around 8 a.m. there was no car at the space. Brushing away many big and beautiful cobwebs with a stick, I walked down to the spot (I took pictures of a spider and a cobweb. Can you recognize them?). Saruwatari was beautiful this morning as usual, but the sea was too calm for fishing. There were many baitfish around the spot, but nothing happened to my lures. The sea was so calm and peaceful that I gave up fishing and enjoyed swimming. The water was still very swimmable. Now that the water temperature dropped a bit, it felt even more refreshing than in July or August. I remembered that the water temperature in the Sea of Japan was so high this summer that a kind of warning was issued by fisheries specialists.

（猿渡の駐車スペースにも数台の車が停まっているだろうと、私はほとんど確信していましたが、午前８時頃に駐車スペースに到着してみると、１台の車も停まっていないのでした。大きくて美しいたくさんの蜘蛛の巣を棒きれで払いのけながら、私は釣り場へ降りていきました（蜘蛛の写真と蜘蛛の巣の写真を撮りました。分かりますか？）。いつもと同様、猿渡は今朝も美しかったのでした。しかし海はあまりにも穏やかで、釣りには良くありません。たくさんのベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）が釣り場の周囲を泳いでいたものの、私のルアーには何も起きません。海があまりにも穏やかで静かだったので、私は釣りをあきらめ、水泳を楽しみました。まだまだ十分に泳げます。海水温が少し下がった今、７月や８月よりも爽やかな気がするほどです。この夏は、日本海の海水温が異常に上昇し、漁業専門家によって一種の警報が発せられたことを思い出しました。）

(No. 208) No Fish at Tsurugashima-no-higashi and Shiroshima in Udo (鵜峠の「鶴ヶ島の東」と白島にて釣果なし)

They say that yellowtail amberjacks are caught now along the shore of the Shimane Peninsula. Probably I should have gone to a familiar fishing spot and started casting lures as early in the morning as possible, but I felt like trying a new spot. So I had looked into the “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook” yesterday and picked Shiroshima in Udo, Izumo City, for a candidate. When I arrived at a parking space for fishermen heading for Shiroshima about 5 a.m. this morning, there were already four cars at the space. I thought the fishing spot would be too crowded for me to cast my big, noisy and splashy lures, but anyway I followed the path in the woods toward the spot, as detailed in the very useful guidebook.

（今、島根半島の沿岸でヒラマサが釣れているそうです。おそらく私は、馴染みの釣り場に行き、なるべく朝早くからルアーを投げるべきだったのですが、新しい釣り場に挑戦してみたかったのでした。そこで昨日、『山陰の釣り場総覧』を調べて、出雲市の鵜峠にある白島に白羽の矢を立てたのです。今朝午前５時頃に、白島に向かう釣り人たちの駐車スペースに到着してみると、既に４台の車が停まっているのでした。釣り場はもう満員になっており、大きくて、やかましくて、飛沫を上げる私のルアーは投げられないかもしれないと思いましたが、ともかく私は、とても役立つ『山陰の釣り場総覧』で詳しく説明されている通りに、林の中の小道をたどって釣り場へと向かったのです。）

It took me about 30 minutes to get out of the woods and reach the shore. Something was wrong. According to the guidebook, I should have gotten out of the woods between Shiroshima and Goto, another fishing spot, but I was standing at the west of Tsurugashima-no-nishi, which is also another fishing spot. I mush have taken a wrong route in the woods. Anyway, I found a place where I could cast my lures at Tsurugashima-no-higashi, a spot on the west of Shiroshima. I could not catch any fish until I left the spot about 8 a.m. to go to Shiroshima. There were three lure fishermen at Shiroshima and I wanted to talk to them. Sadly, they said none of them caught any yellowtail amberjack. After showing my American lures and American tackle to them, I explored the area around Shiroshima and Goto. In the unseasonably hot sun, I found a small inlet and swam there. The water of the inlet felt colder than the last time when I swam at Sanami in Matsue City on September 10, but it was still warm enough.

（林を抜け出して海岸に達するのに30分くらいかかりました。何だか変です。『山陰の釣り場総覧』によると、私が林を抜け出すのは、白島とゴト（別の釣り場）の間の地点のはずでしたが、私は「鶴ヶ島の西」（これもまた別の釣り場）の西側に立っているのでした。林の中で間違った道を選んでしまったのに違いありません。ともかく私は、白島の西にある「鶴ヶ島の東」で、ルアーを投げることが出来ました。何も釣れないまま、午前８時頃に、白島に向かうため釣り場を離れました。白島には３人のルアー釣り師がいらっしゃって、私は彼らと話がしたかったのです。悲しいことに、彼らにもまたヒラマサは釣れていないことが分かりました。アメリカのルアーやタックルをお見せしてから、私は白島とゴトの周囲を探索しました。季節外れの暑さの日光の下、私は小さな入江を発見し、泳ぎました。前回泳いだのは９月10日、松江市の佐波でのことでしたが、その時よりも水温は下がっていました。でも、まだ十分に温かかったのです。）

(No. 207) Casting Practice with New Long Rod at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて長い新竿でキャスティング練習)

Tsunami is one of American fishing tackle brands that are well known in the United States but almost unknown in Japan (Please see the footnote below). Tsunami is never regarded as a high-class brand, but it produces decent fishing tackle at a very reasonable price. Aside from my PENN Torque spinning reels, I don’t like using expensive tackle very much. So I ordered a Tsunami surf rod after my previous rod snapped. The new rod, 12-foot Tsunami Airwave (TSAWSS-1202H), arrived safely at my place several days ago.

（ツナミは、米国ではよく知られているのに日本ではほとんど無名、という米国の釣具ブランドの一つです（どうか下の脚注を御覧ください）。高級ブランドだとは決して思われていませんが、まずまずの釣具をとても手頃な価格で作っています。PENNのトルク・スピニングリールを除けば、私は高価な釣具を使うのをあまり好みません。したがって私は、前の竿がポキっと折れてしまった後、ツナミのサーフロッドを注文したのでした。新しい竿、12フィートのツナミ・エアーウェイブ（TSAWSS-1202H）は、数日前、無事に我が家に到着しました。）

Typhoon No.16 and my lingering cold had not allowed me to go fishing for some time, but this afternoon finally I went to Lake Shinji with the new rod and some big lures. I found some people trying to catch the goby with a lugworm. I cast my lures that are at least twice or three times bigger than the average size of the goby. I did not expect to catch any fish and actually I did not, but I felt satisfied with the action of the new rod. As I had expected, it was softer and more moderate than the previous rod. What a fun it is to cast a big lure with such a rod!

（台風16号と長引く風邪のせいで私はしばらく釣りに行けませんでしたが、ついに今日の午後、新しい竿と大きいルアーを持って、私は宍道湖へ出かけたのです。ゴカイをエサにしてハゼを釣っている人たちがいました。標準的なハゼのサイズよりも、少なくとも２、３倍は大きいルアーを、私は投げました。魚が釣れるとは期待していませんでしたし、実際に釣れなかったのですが、新しい竿の調子に私は満足しました。想像していた通り、以前の竿よりも胴調子だったのです。大きなルアーを、そんな竿で投げるのは、なんて楽しいのでしょう！）

(No. 206) No Fish at Ohashi River (大橋川にて釣果なし)

I did not post anything yesterday, but actually I went to Nanbo, a breakwater in Etomo Harbor, in the evening. My busy work schedule has not allowed me to go fishing in the morning. I have to start working as early as possible, and only when I manage to make some free time in the evening I can go fishing to a nearby spot. Yesterday I did not catch any legitimate fish at Nanbo. I accidentally caught a baby Japanese Spanish mackerel with an Offshore Angler Big Shot. Unfortunately the lure hooked on the body of the small fish.

（昨日は何も投稿しませんでしたが、実は夕方、恵曇港の防波堤の一つである南防に行っていたのでした。最近は仕事が忙しく、朝から釣りに行くことができません。なるべく早起きして仕事を始めねばならず、そして夕方に多少の自由時間を作り出せた時だけ、近くの釣り場に行けるのです。昨日は南防で、真っ当な魚を釣ることはできませんでした。オフショア・アングラー・ビッグショットを使っている時に、小さいサゴシが偶然釣れただけでした。残念なことにルアーは、小さな魚の胴体にかかっているのでした。）

Today I went to the Ohashi River before sunset. I primarily used my Guppy Lure’s 2 oz. Mini, one of American pencil poppers that I have. The lure splashed noisily through the surface, and some baby Japanese sea bass got so excited that they started their onslaught. However, the target of their attack was not the lure. They were attacking the splash that the lure made. The fish were almost as big as the lure or even smaller. Probably they thought the lure was one of them and it was chasing and biting baitfish in the splash. They were trying to bite phantom baitfish.

（今日は、日没前に大橋川へ行きました。私は主に、アメリカのペンシル・ポッパーの一つ、グッピールアーの２オンス・ミニを使いました。飛沫をあげながら水面を騒々しくルアーが進むと、数匹のセイゴ（スズキの赤ちゃん）が激しく興奮し、猛攻撃を開始しました。しかし、彼らが攻撃の対象としたのは、ルアーではなかったのでした。彼らは、ルアーが生み出す飛沫を襲っていたのです。魚たちの大きさは、そのルアーと同じくらいか、あるいはルアーよりも小さいくらいです。したがって恐らく彼らは、そのルアーは自分たちの仲間であり、自分たちの仲間が、飛沫の中にいるはずのベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）を追いかけて食べているのだと思ったのでしょう。彼らは、幻のベイトフィッシュを食べようと頑張っていたのでした。）
