I did it again… I knew my current reel suited my fishing needs better, but my curiosity and my peculiar custom (No. 1365) overcame every rationality. I parted with my wonderful PENN 535GS star drag reel in order to get a hugely discounted second-hand Accurate Boss 270 lever drag reel. I know a lever drag reel is inherently for boat jigging or trolling, not exactly for surf/shore casting. And I don’t do jigging. A fisherman like me, who wants to cast a topwater plug as far as possible, should use a star drag reel, whose spool is much lighter, which means better casting distance and fewer backlash. But I was getting bored with my PENN 535GS, which is too excellent, and I found the Accurate reel hugely discounted on sale. It’s because they said the preset knob was frozen, unmovable, or potentially broken. I have been interested in Accurate reels, but they are always beyond my budget. So I took a chance on the reel. I hoped a good solvent, such as WD-40, could make the preset knob usable again.

As soon as I obtained the reel, I disassembled it, cleaned all the parts, and examined its mechanism. Then I determined that the reel was not broken. The preset knob was not frozen. The truth is that the reel doesn’t have a preset knob! What looks like a preset knob is something else. For other lever drag reels I have used, first you preset a maximum drag force you would like to use, dialing the preset knob. Then you adjust the drag force during fishing between 0 and the maximum, turning the lever back and forth. On the other hand, for my Accurate Boss 270, there is no mechanism inside allowing me to change a maximum drag force. The maximum force seems inherently set and unchangeable. The lack of the mechanism contributes to the simpler reel design. But I might be wrong. If you are familiar with Accurate Boss reels, please let me know your opinions.
