(No. 1346) One Strike at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にてストライクあり)

I have a hunch that this post will be similar to the last post I wrote yesterday. Because the same thing happened today. The only difference was a place where it happened. The new concept, which I discussed on my earlier post No. 1343, might be effective. This early morning, before the intense sunlight hit Saruwatari in Nonami and changed it into an inferno, a fish struck my Line Stretcher Surface Tension plug on the surface when I was retrieving the plug as fast as possible with my fastest reel, PENN Battle III 4000HS. Unfortunately, the fish didn't get hooked, but the new concept, retrieving a smaller lure as fast as possible, might work anywhere. I go keep doing it for a while.

（今日の投稿は、昨日の投稿と似たものになる予感がしています。というのも、昨日と全く同じことが起きたからです。違うのは、それが起きた場所だけです。先日の投稿、No.1343で紹介した新コンセプトは、もしかしたら効果があるのかもしれません。今日の早朝、野波の猿渡に強い日差しが降り注いで、灼熱地獄と化してしまう前のことです。私が所有する最速のリール、PENNのバトルIII 4000HSを使って、ライン・ストレッチャーのサーフェス・テンションプラグを全速力でリトリーブしていたところ、魚がヒットしたのです。残念ながらその魚は針に掛かりませんでしたが、小さめのルアーを全速力でリトリーブするという新コンセプトは、場所がどこであっても効果があるのかもしれません。このコンセプトをしばらく実践し続けようと思います。）

(No. 1345) One Strike at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にてストライクあり)

 

The new concept, which I discussed on my earlier post No. 1343, might be effective. This afternoon, under the intense sunlight about 1 p.m., a fish struck my Line Stretcher Surface Tension plug on the surface of Kurauchi Bay when I was retrieving the plug as fast as possible with my fastest reel, PENN Battle III 4000HS. Unfortunately, the fish didn't get hooked, but the new concept, retrieving a smaller lure as fast as possible, might work.

(No. 1344) Unable to Fish, I Attached Signboard to End of Rope (釣りできず、ロープの端に看板を取り付ける)

Do you own two-piece rods? I assume you do at least two or three two-piece rods. Because you are reading this blog, so you are most likely to be a fisherman. Have you ever brought a wrong combination of two-piece rods to a fishing spot? I mean, have you ever taken one piece from one two-piece rod and another from another rod? I am not sure how many of you have done such a regretful mistake, but I know at least one fisherman has done it before. It was me (No. 1036). Today I did it again. And it was worse than the last time. What I brought to Kurauchi Bay this evening was not the wrong combination of one "front" piece (from one rod) and one "rear" piece (from another rod). What I brought today were two "rear" pieces (each from a different rod). You cannot realize how much I got surprised when I saw two reel seats in front of me. That’s the reason why I was unable to fish today. Instead, I attached a signboard to the end of supportive rope on the slope of Kurauchi Bay. It says, “Don’t throw cigarette butts away. Don’t litter.” Some fishermen seem to still mistake Kurauchi Bay as their huge trash bin.

（皆さんは２ピースロッドをお持ちですか？　少なくとも２、３本はお持ちなのではないでしょうか？　このブログを読まれているということは、おそらく皆さんは、釣り人だと思うからです。だとすると皆さんは、誤った２ピースロッドの組み合わせを、釣り場に持ち込んだことはありませんか？　つまり、ある２ピースロッドから１つのピースを、別の２ピースロッドからもう１つのピースを持ち込む、という具合にです。そんな残念なヘマをしたことのある人が、皆さんの中にどれくらい、いらっしゃるのか分かりませんが、私は、少なくとも一人、そんなヘマをした釣り人を知っています。それは私です（No. 1036）。今日もまた、私はやってしまったのです。しかも今回は、前回よりもひどいのでした。今夕、私が倉内湾に持ち込んだのは、あるロッドの「前」のピースと別のロッドの「後ろ」のピースという誤った組み合わせではなかったのです。今日私が持ち込んだのは、なんと、「後ろ」のピースが２つだったのです（それぞれ別のロッドから）。皆さんには想像もできないでしょう。リールシートが２つ、目の前に並んでいるのを見た私が、どれほど驚愕したことか…。したがって今日、私は釣りができませんでした。代わりに私は、倉内湾の斜面にかかる補助ロープの先端に、ある看板を取り付けました。「タバコをポイ捨てしないでね。ゴミも捨てないで」と書いた看板です。倉内湾を巨大なゴミ箱だと勘違いしている釣り人が、いまだにいるようなのです。）

(No. 1343) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi with New Concept under Climate Change (気候変動の下、大芦の丸岩にて新コンセプトで釣果なし)

A lot of things seem to keep changing on land and at sea under the ongoing climate change. For example, the catch of bonitos reported at some fishing harbors in the Sanin Region has increased. Bonitos used to be rare in the Sea of Japan. They were so rare that those in the Sea of Japan were called “stray bonitos.” Now there are so many of them that I believe they don’t recognize they are lost. They must be together with a lot of friends or siblings of their own. On the other hand, I feel the number of amberjacks including the yellowtail has decreased. Thinking about this change in the sea, I felt I also needed to change. 

（進行中の気候変動の影響を受けて、海でも陸でも様々なことが変化し続けています。例えば、山陰地方の漁港では、カツオの漁獲量が増加しているという報告があります。かつて日本海では、カツオは珍しかったのです。「迷いガツオ」と呼ばれていたほど、希少だったのです。しかし今では数が増え過ぎて、カツオ自身も自分が迷子になったとは思っていないのではないでしょうか。たくさんの仲間や兄弟と一緒にいるに違いないのですから。一方で、ヒラマサなど青物の数は減っているような気がします。）

American saltwater lures I have primarily used for this blog are for catching striped bass over there. In Japan these big plugs can be effective in catching Japanese sea bass and some bigger amberjacks, but I feel they are too big for catching bonitos swimming inshore. When I was in the U.S., I used a small metal jig for catching false albacores in the autumn. In order to catch those smaller tuna fish, I had to retrieve a tiny lure as fast as possible. I decided to apply this concept to the shore of Shimane Peninsula. For this purpose, I used PENN Battle III 4000HS reel this morning, which is the fastest in my current arsenal. Neither bonitos nor false albacores responded my lures this morning, but I felt I would catch them sooner or later if I kept retrieving the lures very fast.

（こうした海の変化を思うと、私自身にも変化が必要だと感じました。このブログで主に使ってきたアメリカのソルトルアーは、彼の地においてストライプド・バスを釣るためのものです。日本では、こうした大型プラグは、スズキや大型の青物には効果的であるのですが、沿岸を回遊するカツオを釣るには大き過ぎるのではないかと思います。アメリカにいた頃は、秋にスマガツオを釣るために小型のメタルジグを使っていました。こうした小ぶりなツナ系の魚を釣るには、小さなルアーをできるだけ速くリトリーブする必要がありました。私は、このコンセプトを島根半島の沿岸で試すことにしました。今朝は、PENNのスピニングリール、バトルIII 4000HSを使用しました。これは、現在の手持ちのリールの中で、最も高速なものなのです。今朝は、カツオからもスマガツオからも何の反応もありませんでしたが、ルアーを速くリトリーブし続けていれば、いずれ釣れるだろうと感じました。）

(No. 1342) Surrounded with Floating Seaweeds, No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (浮遊する海藻に包囲され、大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

“Since when have I not caught fish? I don’t remember… Of course I can remember since when, if I decide to look over this blog, but I don’t like to do that somehow. Who cares? I am still enjoying my fishing, or my “non-fishing.” I even feel like breaking the world record of the longest no-fish period in any fishing blogs. Or am I already the record holder? Hahaha. Anyway, who cares? The longer the interval between the last and the next catches is, the bigger the excitement is. 500 unimpressive catches will lose to 1 impressive catch. Right?” That’s what I was thinking when I was walking toward Maruiwa in Owashi. The sea was very stagnant this morning with a lot of seaweeds floating on the surface. It was almost impossible to throw and retrieve a lure without being interfered with the seaweeds.

(No. 1341) Extracting Long Rope from Susumi Bay and Extending Rope for Kurauchi Bay (須々海湾で長いロープを抜き出し、倉内湾のロープを延長する)

My mission for Kurauchi Bay, which was to install a supportive rope at the entrance to it, was already done. The rope originating from the entrance ran down on the slope and covered the most slippery part of it. However, I wasn’t completely satisfied with the final results. Indeed the rope was effective enough, but I knew I could extend it. So what I was thinking today was where to find another piece of rope to be added to the current one. I was not sure if I could pull out a piece of rope again from the tight tangle of ropes washed up on the shore nearby Safuki-bana in Nonami. It came to my mind that there had been another tangle of ropes on the shore of Susumi Bay. To my surprise, I managed to pull out a very long and undamaged piece of rope from it. Then I successfully lengthened the supportive rope for Kurauchi Bay to a much greater degree than I had hoped. Now I am completely satisfied with the final results. I believe no one is going to slip on the slope anymore.

（倉内湾の入り口に補助ロープを設置するという私の任務は、既に完了していました。入り口から伸びたロープは斜面を下り、最も滑りやすい部分をカバーしていました。しかし私は、その最終的な出来栄えに、完全には満足していなかったのです。ロープは十分に効果的ではあったものの、さらに延ばすこともできると分かっていました。そこで今日考えていたのは、現在のロープに追加するための別のロープをどこで見つけられるだろうか、ということでした。野波のサフキ鼻近くの海岸に打ち上げられた塊から、再びロープを引き抜くことができるかどうかは分かりませんでした。私はふと、須々海湾の岸辺にもロープの塊があったことを思い出しました。驚いたことに、その塊からは、非常に長くて、どこも傷んでいないロープを引き抜くことができたのです。そして私は、倉内湾の補助ロープを、当初の計画をはるかに超える長さにまで、延ばすことに成功しました。今は、その最終的な出来栄えに完全に満足しています。もう誰も、あの斜面で滑ることはないでしょう。）

(No. 1340) Making Clear Soup with “Bebe” Shellfish after No Fish at Kurauchi Bay (べべ貝のすまし汁を作る。倉内湾にて釣果なき後で)

One of my translation assignments which had been scheduled for this morning was cancelled. I decided to spend that unexpected free time going to Kurauchi Bay and collecting some “bebe” shellfish. I wanted to try making clear soup with them under the guidance of my mother, who is the oldest daughter of my grandfather, who had started one of the most traditional Japanese inns in my neighborhood. My mother must have secret tips or seasonings for the super delicious soup. After throwing my favorite lures only several times in vain, I started collecting the shellfish using a flat-tip screwdriver. Here I would like to warn you that you are not allowed to collect other marine products, such as turban shells, sea urchins, abalones, etc., while allowed to collect “bebe” shellfish in Shimane Prefecture.

（今朝予定されていた通訳の仕事の一つがキャンセルになったので、思いがけず自由になった時間を使って倉内湾へ行き、べべ貝を採ることにしました。母の指導のもと、べべ貝を使ったすまし汁を作ってみようと思ったのです。私の母は、昔、もっとも伝統的な、今に続く老舗旅館の一つを近所に開いた祖父の、長女なのです。そんな母ですからきっと、とびきり美味しいあのすまし汁を作るための隠し味か、あるいは何か特殊な調味料のことを知っているに違いありません。お気に入りのルアーを何度か投げたものの無駄に終わった私は、さっそくマイナスドライバーを手にして、貝を採り始めました。さて、ここで注意しておきたいことがあります。島根県では、べべ貝の採取こそ許されていますが、サザエやウニ、アワビなど他の海産物の採取は禁止されています。）

A few days ago another group of poachers was caught for collecting turban shells. Don’t steal. And don’t run, if you are suspected for some reasons. You should try to remain calm and say with a smile, “I was collecting only ‘bebe’ shellfish and it’s not prohibited.” Anyway, I started making the clear soup in accordance with my mother’s recipe. First, wash the shellfish thoroughly with water. Second, put them in a pot. Third, pour water in it and heat it. Fourth, skim off the scum from the broth. Fifth, add soup stock and some soy sauce to taste. And… is that all? Where is a secret seasoning or tip, mother? I was in doubt but tasted the freshly made soup… And it tasted… wonderful! How delicious the “bebe” shellfish could be! We should not over-collect them, but you have to try them at least once in your lifetime.

（先日も、別の密猟者グループがサザエを採っていたところを捕まったばかりです。皆さん、盗んではいけません。そして、もしも何らかの理由で疑われたとしても、逃げてはいけません。心を落ち着けるよう務め、そして「私はベベ貝だけを採っておりました。それは禁止されていないのです」と、笑顔で言いましょう。さて、私は母のレシピに従って、すまし汁を作り始めました。まず、貝を水でよく洗います。次に、貝を鍋に入れます。次に、そこに水を入れて加熱します。次に、浮いてきたアクを取ります。次に、だしの素と醤油を適量加えます。次に… え、これで終わり？　秘密の隠し味や調味料は、いったいどこにあるのですか、母上？　半信半疑なまま、私は、出来立てのすまし汁の味見をしてみたのです… すると、なんと美味しいことでしょう！　ベベ貝って、こんなにも美味しいものなのですね！　採り過ぎてはいけませんが、皆さんも、一生に一度は食べてみるべきだと思います。）

(No. 1339) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami after My Anti-Reverse Tummy Experiment Came to End (逆転防止ぽんぽん実験は終了し、野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

The experiment with my belly used as an alternative anti-reverse mechanism for PENN 706Z has officially ended. I am not sure whether it was a failure or not because I didn’t hook any fish during the period of the experiment. My belly might have worked as expected if I had hooked a fish. The thing was it’s so inconvenient to change a lure. Only after I held my modified PENN 706Z, which didn’t have its original anti-reverse mechanism, under my arm firmly could I change a lure using both my hands. It’s so inconvenient that I had to abort the experiment. There was another reason behind the decision. I am an ambidextrous caster. When I wanted to do a right-handed cast, my band-aid-applied PENN 706Z worked fine because I was able to use only my right hand to hook the line with my index finger, but when I wanted to do a left-handed cast, I had to use my left hand as well as my right hand, and one of the advantages made no sense. So my PENN 706Z had returned to its normal form by this morning. Today I woke up earlier than usual, before 5 a.m., because I wanted to do more serious fishing. I arrived at Saruwatari before 6 a.m. Without being tempted to dive into the sea, I kept throwing my lures for about 40 minutes, but the sea remained too quiet. Nothing responded.

（PENN 706Zの逆転防止機構として私の腹を使うという実験は、正式に終了しました。実験の期間中に魚はかからなかったので、この実験が失敗だったのかどうかは分かりません。もしも魚がかかっていれば、私の腹は期待通りに機能したかもしれないのです。問題は、ルアー交換があまりにも不便になるということでした。逆転防止機構を取り外す改造が施されたPENN 706Zを、脇の下にしっかりと固定してやっと、両手でルアー交換ができるようになるのです。これがあまりにも不便なので、実験は中止せざるを得ませんでした。中止の理由は、もう一つあります。私は左右両利きのキャスターです。絆創膏を貼った私のPENN 706Zは、右投げの時は、右手だけで人差し指にラインが引っ掛けられるのですが、左投げの時は、右手だけでなく左手も使わねばならず、せっかくのメリットの一つが無意味になるのです。というわけで、私のPENN 706Zは、今朝までには元通りの姿に戻っていました。私は今日、いつもよりも本格的な釣りをしたいと思い、いつもより早く、午前５時前に起床しました。そして、午前６時前には猿渡に到着していたのです。海に飛び込みたいという誘惑に負けることなく、40分ほどルアーを投げ続けましたが、海はあまりにも静かでした。何も反応はありません。）

(No. 1338) Weed Cutting along Another Path to Beautiful Kurauchi Bay (美しき倉内湾に至る別の小道の雑草を刈る)

Isn’t it beautiful? Kurauchi Bay is such a beautiful place that I would like more people to come and enjoy it. There are a few paths that you can take to walk down to the shore of the bay. I recently installed a piece of rope around the entrance to the most popular path in order for visitors not to slip and fall on the slope. Today I cut weeds along the second popular path. Obviously, no one had maintained the path for a while. Thorny weeds had been freely stretching their dangerous branches. I had to fight against them, in addition to the excruciating heat. I meticulously calculated the rise of my body temperature. I managed to allow it to rise as high as possible but not reach the threshold of suffering heatstroke. When I was about to finally fall due to the heat, I cut the last annoying weed and reached the shore. I dived into the sea. It was so refreshing! My body temperature rapidly fell and made me ready for fishing. I threw my favorite lures under the still intense but no more intolerable sun. No fish responded.

（美しいでしょう？　倉内湾はとても美しい場所なので、私は、もっと多くの人が訪れて、満喫してくれればいいのにと思うのです。湾の岸辺へ降りていくための小道が、いくつかあります。先日は、一番人気のある小道の入り口にロープを取り付けて、訪れた人が斜面で滑って転ばないようにしました。今日は、二番目に人気のある小道沿いの雑草を刈りました。どうやら、しばらく誰も手入れをしていなかったようで、棘のある雑草が、その危険な枝を自由気ままに伸ばしていました。私はそうした雑草に加えて、耐え難い暑さにも対処しなければなりませんでした。体温の上昇を綿密に計算しながら、上げられるところまで体温を上げつつ、しかし熱中症にはならないよう気を配りました。そして、ついに熱中症で倒れそうになった時、私は、最後の厄介な雑草を刈り終えて、岸辺にたどり着いていたのです。海に飛び込みました。なんて爽快なのでしょう！　体温はみるみる下降し、釣りができる状態になりました。耐えられないほどではなくなった強い日差しの下、お気に入りのルアーを投げてみました。魚からの反応はありませんでした。）

(No. 1337) New Experiment: My Anti-Reverse Mechanism is My Tummy (新しい実験：我がぽんぽんこそ我が逆転防止機構なり)

This is another technical piece about my favorite spinning reel, PENN 706Z, following the previous one about adding a shim to the reel (No. 1323). PENN 706Z is an old-fashioned bail-less (manual pickup) reel. Unlike more modern reels, it doesn’t have a so-called “instant anti-reverse“ bearing. Instead, it has a traditional anti-reverse mechanism with a lever to toggle it. With the mechanism on, the reel keeps making a clicking sound when you turn the handle, and the handle can only be turned forward. With the mechanism off, the reel doesn’t make any sound and becomes a so-called “knuckle buster,” whose handle can be turned forward or backward (reverse). With a “knuckle buster” reel, when a fish pulls out the line from the reel, the rotor and the handle turns reverse. If a fish pulls hard, the rotor and the handle spin violently, and the fast-spinning handle might bust your knuckle. That’s why it’s called a “knuckle buster.” In other words, the reel can be dangerous when its anti-reverse mechanism is off. So what’s on the earth the advantage of turning it off? Why does the reel have the lever to turn it off?

（今回の記事は、私が愛用するスピニングリール、PENN 706Zに関する技術的な内容のものであり、前回のシム追加記事（No. 1323）の続きとなります。PENN 706Zは、古風なベールレス（マニュアル・ピックアップ）リールです。現代的なリールとは異なり、いわゆるインスタント・アンチ・リバース（瞬間的逆転防止）ベアリングは搭載されていません。その代わりに、昔ながらの逆転防止機構が備わっており、それを切り替えるためのレバーが付いています。この機構がオンの時、ハンドルを回すとカリカリと音が鳴り、ハンドルは順方向にしか回せません。一方で、この機構がオフの時、リールは無音となって、ハンドルは順方向にも逆方向（リバース）にも回せます。そしていわゆる「ナックルバスター」リールと化すのです。逆転防止機構がオフのまま、魚がかかって引くと、ローターとハンドルが逆方向に回ってしまいます。魚が激しく引けばローターとハンドルも激しく逆回転し、高速で逆回転するハンドルが、こぶし（ナックル）に当たって怪我をしてしまいます。だから「ナックルバスター」と呼ばれるわけです。つまり、リールの逆転防止機構がオフの時、リールは危険なものになるわけです。では、一体全体、逆転防止機構をオフにするメリットとは何なのでしょうか？　なぜこのリールには、逆転防止をオフにするためのレバーが付いているのでしょう？）

In case of PENN 706Z, when its anti-reverse mechanism remains off, it’s easier to hook the line with the index finger of your right hand before starting a cast, as some users such as Namaji-san pointed out. You just turn the handle reverse, then your stretched index finger can catch the line and disengage it from the line roller. You don’t have to use your left hand at all. The second merit is quietness. The reel becomes silent, and you might enjoy your serene surroundings more than before. The third merit is smoothness. The smooth reel gets even smoother because the slight resistance caused by the mechanism disappears.

（PENN 706Zの場合、逆転防止機構をオフにしておくと、キャストする前に、右手の人差し指でラインを引っ掛けやすくなるのです。これは、ナマジさんなど他の利用者の方も指摘されていることです。ハンドルを逆回転させれば、伸ばした人差し指にラインが引っ掛かり、ラインローラーからラインが容易に外れます。左手を使う必要がなくなるのです。２つ目のメリットは、静けさです。リールが音を立てなくなるので、周囲の静謐な空間を、これまで以上に満喫できるようになります。３つ目のメリットは、スムーズさです。逆転防止機構によるわずかな抵抗が消えるため、スムーズなリールの回転が、さらにスムーズになるのです。）

So how can I deal with its disadvantage? What can I do to prevent my knuckle from being busted. I don’t like to turn the lever on and off during my casting and reeling motion. So I came up with an idea. How about using my belly? When a fish hits my lure and starts pulling the line hard, and the anti-reverse function becomes necessary, I should push the reel against my belly. Indeed the handle starts turning reverse, but my belly stops it from turning further. What a surprise! My anti-reverse mechanism is my strong tummy! In order to test this new hypothesis, I took out all the parts making up of the anti-reverse mechanism from my PENN 706Z. Let’s see which mechanism is better, the instant anti-reverse bearing installed in almost all reels currently produced, the traditional anti-reverse mechanism that older reels such as PENN 706Z have, or my belly. If my belly turns out the best option, we might have an exciting new category in the wonderful world of spinning reels: a “knuckle buster” spinning with no anti-reverse function. The number of reel parts would be fewer, the design of the reel would be simpler, and the reel would be more primitive, beautiful, sometimes bloody, and probably much cheaper! Let’s see how my new experiment goes!

Kurauchi Bay needed another piece of rope. The rope I had extracted from the tight tangle of ropes on the shore nearby Safuki-bana was a little bit too short to fully cover the most slippery part of the slope to Kurauchi Bay. So I repeated it again this afternoon. I climbed down the path in the woods toward Safuki-bana and managed to extract another piece of rope. I almost suffered heatstroke but felt wonderful. That kind of activity kept me fit both physically and mentally. Then I drove to Kurauchi Bay and lengthened the rope I had attached to a tree at the entrance to the bay. I saw a bait fisherman below on the shore. He didn’t seem to notice me. I wondered whether he would later notice the rope had become longer. Wondering if he would or not, I noticed that I was somehow smiling.

（倉内湾には、もう１本ロープが必要なのでした。サフキ鼻近くの海岸で絡まり合っているロープの塊から抜き取ったロープは、倉内湾へ至る斜面の滑りやすい箇所を完全にカバーするには少し短かったのです。そこで今日の午後、私は同じことを繰り返しました。サフキ鼻へ至る林の中の小道を下り、なんとかもう１本のロープを抜き取ったのです。熱中症になりそうでしたが、気分は爽快でした。こういう活動をすることで、私は、心身ともに健康になるのです。それから私は倉内湾へ行き、湾の入り口に立つ木に結わえたロープを長くしました。岸辺で餌釣りをしている人が、下の方に見えました。彼は、私に気づかないようです。果たしてあの釣り人は、ロープが長くなっていることに後で気づくだろうか、と私は考えました。果たして彼は気づくだろうか、と私は考えながら、なぜだか微笑んでいる自分に気づくのでした。）
