(No. 1206) No Fish in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe but Nice Chat with Young Lure Fisherman (宍道湖サンセットカフェの前にて釣果なしも、若いルアー釣り師と楽しいおしゃべり）

I didn’t recognize another lure fisherman throwing a big plug from the shore in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe until he got close. So I felt as if he suddenly appeared from nowhere. Fortunately he was such a friendly decent fisherman that he listened to what I was saying without the slightest look of annoyance. He was using a jointed “big bait,” and how he moves it is very different from how I move my American pencil popper. So I explained what I was doing: “My style is from the Northeastern part of the U.S., where the sandy beach is so shallow that fishermen have to use a long rod to gain as much casting distance as possible and to move a topwater lure with such a long rod.” I hope he got interested.

（宍道湖サンセットカフェ前の岸辺で大きなプラグを投げているルアー釣り師の存在に、私は、その人が近くに来るまで気づきませんでした。だから、どこからともなく突然現れたような感じがしました。幸いにも、彼はとてもフレンドリーで礼儀正しい釣り人だったので、少しも嫌な顔をせずに私の話を聞いてくれたのでした。彼はジョイント式の「ビッグベイト」を使っていたのですが、その動かし方は、私がアメリカのペンシル・ポッパーを動かすやり方とは全然違うものなのです。そこで私は、自分のやっていることを説明しました。「私のスタイルはアメリカ北東部のもので、そこの砂浜はとても浅いので、釣り人はできるだけ遠くまで投げるために長いロッドを使わなければならないし、そうした長いロッドでトップウォーター・ルアーを動かすのです」などと。彼が興味を持ってくれたらいいと思います。）

(No. 1205) Missed (Probably Big) Japanese Sea Bass in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe (宍道湖サンセットカフェの前にて（おそらく大型の）スズキを逃す）

According to the concept by the Shinjiko Sunset Concierge, Shinjiko Sunset Cafe is the concession stand of the theater called “Shinjiko Sunset Theater.” Every show on the theater is unique because there aren’t two sunsets that are the same. Whenever I am fishing in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe, I am a performer on the show as well as a fisherman. I believe I gave today’s sunset show some unusual stuff; a surprise and an excitement. When I was making huge splash on the surface with the Tsunami TS Popper, a fish snatched it. I felt the weight of the fish. It was never a small fish. I heard some sunset viewers behind me saying something in excitement, but the fish came off instantly. "Next time!" I shouted to the viewers and shared my disappointment with them.

（宍道湖の夕日コンシェルジュさんのコンセプトによれば、宍道湖サンセットカフェは「宍道湖サンセットシアター」という劇場の売店なのです。そして、その劇場にかかるショーは、どれも唯一のものです。なぜなら、同じ夕日は２つとないからです。宍道湖サンセットカフェの前で釣りをする時、私は釣り人であるとともに、夕日ショーの出演者でもあります。私は今日のショーに、いつもとは違うものをお届けできたと思います。驚きと興奮です。ツナミのTSポッパーを動かして水面に派手な飛沫をあげていると、魚がそれをひったくったのです。魚の重みが感じられました。決して小型の魚ではありません。私の後ろで夕日を眺めていた人たちが、興奮して何か言っているのが聞こえます。しかしその魚は、すぐにバレてしまいました。「次は頑張ります！」私は観客に向かってそう叫び、残念な気持ちを彼らと分かち合いました。）

(No. 1204) Small Personal Achievement Although No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なしも、小さな個人的達成あり)

Since I returned from the trip to deliver the “Collected Prefaces,” I have been to Lake Shinji and the Ohashi River several times for the Japanese sea bass or the flathead. I have not caught any so far, but I achieved a different kind of feat this evening. I was in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe and was using one of American pencil poppers. A pair of local residents got curious about what I was doing. They seemed to mistake my lure for a real fish. So they stopped in order to look at it more closely. The biggest reason for my using an American pencil popper is not to catch fish but to get people curious. Then I can talk to them, explain what I am doing, and have a nice chat with them. When I just started talking to the pair, another pair came up to me. They were not Japanese but Bangladeshi. So I got into a difficult position. If I spoke Japanese, the Bangladeshi probably might not understand. If I spoke English, the Japanese pair might not. I didn’t like to let either one of the pairs feel left out. So I had to speak English and Japanese alternately. I think I did a good job. Because I remember their expressions on their faces when I said goodbye to both the pairs. They were smiling.

（「序説集」を届ける旅から戻って以来、スズキやマゴチを釣るために宍道湖や大橋川に何度か出かけました。今のところ釣れていませんが、今夕は、別の種類の偉業を成し遂げました。私は宍道湖サンセットカフェの前で、アメリカ製のペンシル・ポッパーを使っていたのです。地元の２人組みが、私のしていることに興味を持ちました。彼女たちは、私のルアーを本物の魚だと思っているようです。そして、もっとよく見るために、立ち止まりました。私がアメリカ製のペンシル・ポッパーを使う最大の理由は、魚を釣ることではなく、人々の興味を引くことです。そうすれば、彼らと話をして、私がしていることを説明し、楽しいおしゃべりができます。私がその２人組みと話し始めたとき、別の２人組みが近づいてきました。彼らは日本人ではなく、バングラデシュ人でした。私は難しい立場に立たされてしまいました。私が日本語を話したら、バングラデシュの２人はおそらく理解できないでしょう。かといって私が英語を話したら、日本の２人が理解できないかもしれません。私は、どちらの２人組みにも疎外感を感じてもらいたくありませんでした。したがって私は、英語と日本語を交互に話さねばならなくなったのです。うまくできたと思います。なぜなら、両ペアとさよならした時の、彼ら彼女らの表情を覚えているからです。笑顔だったのです。）

(No. 1203) Successful Delivery then No Fish at Lake Tōgō (配達に成功後、東郷湖にて釣果なし)

As I mentioned on one of my earlier posts (No.1191), I had been working on the collected prefaces to hypothetical theories of one local secondhand bookstore in Matsue City. This morning I finally received packages containing copies of the leaflet “Collected Prefaces to Theories of Toueisha by Characters in Matsue Nichijō” from the printer. And now I am delivering the copies to 5 small-sized bookstores in our region. Today I successfully delivered them to “Kisui-kuko” in Tottori Prefecture and “Shoka Ao-to-Midori” in Matsue City. Tomorrow I am going to visit “Kuto-ten” and “Awai-do” in Izumo City and “every book store” in Ohnan-cho. If you are interested in something like a book store in a small town or people around such a store, you should check the leaflet out at one of those 5 bookstores. As for today’s fishing, after I completed the delivery to “Kisui-kuko,” I enjoyed throwing lures briefly at Lake Tōgō. “Kisui-kuko” is located along the lakeside road surrounding the brackish lake. There were a few friendly fishermen there. They were for the Japanese sea bass. The arrival of “Collected Prefaces.” Successful delivery of them. And a nice chat with friendly fishermen. What a wonderful day.

（以前の投稿（No.1191）で触れた通り、私は、松江市のとある古本屋に関する架空の理論に対する序文をまとめる仕事に励んでいました。今朝、ついに印刷所から、その冊子「『松江日乗』の登場人物たちによる 冬營舎論 序説集」の入った小包が届いたのです。私は今、この地域にある５つの小規模な本屋さんに、その冊子を届けています。今日は、鳥取県の「汽水空港」と松江市の「書架 青と緑」に無事届けました。明日は、出雲市の「句読点」と「あわい堂」、そして邑南町の「every book store」に届ける予定です。もしもあなたが、小さな町の本屋さんとか、そういう本屋さんの周辺にいる人たちなどに興味があるのなら、ぜひこれら５つの本屋さんのどこかに行って、冊子をチェックしてみてください。さて、今日の釣りですが、「汽水空港」への配達を終えた後、東郷湖で束の間、ルアーを投げるのを楽しみました。「汽水空港」は、この汽水湖を囲む湖岸道路沿いにあるのです。数人の親切な釣り人がいました。彼らはスズキを狙っているのでした。「序説集」の到着。成功した配達。そして気さくな釣り人たちとの楽しいおしゃべり。素晴らしい一日でした。）

(No. 1202) Missed Fish in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe (宍道湖サンセットカフェの前にて魚を逃す)

In the evening, I visited the shore in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe again. There were much fewer people there than yesterday. The sky was overcast, so that people might have assumed they wouldn’t see a beautiful sunset over the lake today. On the other hand, a cloudy sky is said to be better for the Japanese sea bass fishing than a clear sky, which might be true. When I was maneuvering my Tsunami XD Talkin Popper on the surface, a fish struck it with a splashy sound. It looked a big fish. Not only I but also a couple sitting by me yelled out something in excitement, but my line broke almost at the same time as the strike. Not only the fish but also my popper was gone. Which means I left a plastic garbage in the lake. It’s very regrettable. I had inserted a barrel swivel between two leaders, and one of the knots came undone. I don’t understand how it happened because I am sure that I had tied the leader to the swivel as tightly as possible. Anyway it happened. It was my fault. I dropped by Shinjiko Sunset Cafe after fishing. Today was the day the Shinjiko Sunset Concierge was working at the cafe. My regret got deeper. If I had caught the fish, I could have impressed her! I am writing this piece with deepest regret.

（夕方、宍道湖サンセットカフェ前の岸辺を再び訪れました。昨日よりも人はずっと少なめでした。空が曇っていたので、今日は、湖に沈む美しい夕日を見ることはできないだろうと人は思ったのかもしれません。一方で、晴れよりも曇りの方がスズキ釣りには良いと言われているのですが、それは本当かもしれません。ツナミXDトーキン・ポッパーを水面で操作していると、飛沫音をあげて魚がヒットしました。どうやら大きな魚のようでした。私だけでなく、隣に座っていたカップルも興奮し、何か叫びましたが、ヒットとほぼ同時にラインが切れてしまいました。魚だけでなくポッパーも消えてしまったのです。つまり、プラスチックのゴミを湖中に残してしまったわけです。非常に残念でした。２本のリーダーの間にスイベルを挟んでいたのですが、その結び目の１つがほどけてしまったのです。なぜそんなことになったのか分かりません。リーダーとスイベルは最大限の力で強く結んでいたはずなのです。とにかく、それは起きてしまいました。私のせいです。釣りを終えて、宍道湖サンセットカフェに立ち寄りました。今日は宍道湖の夕日コンシェルジュさんがカフェで働いている日でした。私の後悔は募りました。あの魚が釣れていれば、彼女にいいところが見せられたのに！　最大限に残念な気持ちを抱えたまま、この文章を書いています。）

(No. 1201) Cute Conversation with Chinese Girls and Two Strikes in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe (中国の少女たちとのキュートな会話、そして宍道湖サンセットカフェの前にてストライクが２回)

I was maneuvering one of my pencil poppers in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe this evening. I was with renewed confidence thanks to the flathead I had caught this morning. The splash my popper caused on the surface intrigued a group of Chinese girls who were walking toward me along the shore of Lake Shinji. They were speaking Chinese, but, when they got closest to me, one of them asked in Japanese, “Fish?” I showed them my popper and said in Japanese, “It’s not fish.” Realizing it was a lure, they smiled sweetly and returned to their native tongue. Passing by me, they kept walking.

（今日の夕方、私は宍道湖サンセットカフェの前でペンシル・ポッパーを操っていました。今朝釣れたマゴチのおかげで、自信を取り戻していました。ポッパーが水面で飛沫を上げるので、宍道湖の岸沿いを私に向かって歩いてくる中国の女の子たちが興味をもったようです。彼女たちは中国語を話していましたが、私の近くまで来ると、一人が日本語で「魚？」と聞きました。私はポッパーを見せて、「魚じゃないよ 」と日本語で答えました。それがルアーだと分かると、彼女たちは優しく微笑み、母国語に戻りました。私の横を通り過ぎ、彼女たちは歩き続けました。）

A short while later I saw them coming back. I was using the Super Strike Zig Zag when they got closest to me again. Looking at my white plug, one of the girls asked in Japanese, “Squid?” Her cute pronunciation made me smile. I showed them my plug and said in English, “No. This is not sea. This is lake.” She simply said in English, “Lake,” smiling, and returned to their Chinese chat. After they were gone, although no fish got hooked, I did get two strikes, one on each of the two plugs. Each time my heart almost stopped. I felt as if those strikes were thanks to nice spells the Chinese girls had put on my lures.

（しばらくすると、彼女たちが戻ってくるのが見えました。彼女たちが再び私に近づいてきた時、私はスーパーストライク・ジグザグを使っていました。その白いプラグを見て、彼女たちの一人が日本語で「イカ？」と尋ねました。彼女のかわいい発音に思わず笑みがこぼれました。私はプラグを見せて、英語で答えました。「いいえ。ここは海じゃなくて湖だよ」。彼女は英語で 「湖」とだけ言うと、にっこり笑い、中国語のおしゃべりに戻っていきました。彼女たちが去ってしばらくして、魚はかからなかったものの、２つのプラグに１回ずつ、２回のストライクがありました。そのたびに心臓が止まりそうになりました。ストライクがあったのは、中国の女の子たちが、私のルアーに素敵な魔法をかけてくれたからではないかという気がしました。）

(No. 1200) Flathead at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてマゴチ)

Now I often see a few small boats floating on Lake Shinji during the day. They are for the Japanese sea bass. The sight of them raise my  anticipations. They can be an indicator of the presence of fish. I saw such boats yesterday, but no fish responded to my lures. This morning I didn’t see any of the boats. It was a bit too early for them. While walking along the lake shore from the west to the east, I kept throwing my favorite lures. Shijimi clam fishermen take a break on Wednesdays, so there was no fleet of Shijimi fishing boats, either. The lake was quiet all along except when I saw a fish twisting around just below the surface. The fish might have been attacking some baitfish. I threw my Northbar Bottledarter toward the ripple left by the fish and started retrieving it slowly. The fish immediately struck the plug. It was a beautiful flathead of 50 cm (20 in.) long.

（日中、宍道湖に浮かぶ数隻の小さなボートをよく見かけるようになりました。スズキ釣りの船です。その姿を見ると、期待感が高まります。魚がいる証拠だからです。昨日もそんなボートを見かけましたが、私のルアーに反応する魚はいませんでした。今朝は一艘も見ませんでした。ボートが現れるには少し早すぎたようです。湖岸を西から東へ歩きながら、お気に入りのルアーを投げ続けました。シジミ漁は水曜日が休みなので、シジミ漁の船団の姿もありません。湖はずっと静かなままでした。水面直下で体をくねらせている一匹の魚が見えた時を除けば。その魚はベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）を襲っていたのかもしれません。私は、魚が残した波紋に向かって、ノースバーのボトルダーターを投げ、ゆっくりと巻き始めました。魚はすぐにプラグにヒットしました。全長50センチの美しいマゴチでした。）

(No. 1199) Birth of “Undergrown Coffee Bean” aka “Coffee Bean mini” (「発育不良のコーヒー豆」あるいは「コーヒー豆 mini」の誕生)

As I reported in the earlier post today, two of the three coffee beans I had harvested around Safuki-bana had incurable cracks. The remaining one is the tiniest. In addition, the shape of it were as if crushed by a powerful giant. I felt it was an undernourished bean, but I gave it a try. I injected water until it reached around 80 grams, and attached a hook to it. I went to Lake Shinji and used it. The result was not bad. Probably due to its crushed shape, the small bean doesn’t swim as regularly as the bigger one, but it sometimes makes a sudden irregular move. It also seems to work fine as a popper. I would like to make an announcement. The “Undergrown Coffee Bean” aka “Coffee Bean mini” was born.

（本日、１回目の投稿で報告した通り、サフキ鼻周辺で収穫したコーヒー豆３つのうち２つには、修復不能なひび割れが入っていたのでした。一番小さい豆だけが残りました。しかもそれは、まるで強力な巨人に押しつぶされたような形状をしていたのです。栄養不足なコーヒー豆だと感じられましたが、私はやってみることにしました。水を注入して80グラム程度の重さにし、針を取り付けました。宍道湖に行って、使ってきました。結果は悪くありません。この小さなコーヒー豆は、ひしゃげた形状のせいか、大きなコーヒー豆ほどは規則正しく泳ぎません。でも時折、突然の不規則な動きをするのです。また、ポッパーとしても十分使えそうです。ここに発表いたします。「発育不良のコーヒー豆」あるいは「コーヒー豆 mini」の誕生です。）
