(No. 1174) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

I got fully accustomed to doing the overhead casting with my newest combination of Okinawa Manbika C100SSXH-P3 rod and Shimano Torium 1500HG as a casting reel. When I obtained the rod, which is the heaviest in my rods, I felt it was too stiff for me to use in a normal way (i.e., the overhead cast). But now that I understand the characteristics of the rod (i.e., it’s actually not too stiff but just very strong, and it could have a nice “bending curve” when I throw a sufficiently heavy lure), I don’t even feel it's heavy. So I think I am ready for catching any big fish, but the sea was just too quiet as usual.

(No. 1173) No Fish at Etomo Harbor (恵曇港にて釣果なし)

My newest combination of Okinawa Manbika C100SSXH-P3 rod and Shimano Torium 1500HG, as a casting reel, works very fine. It doesn't mean that I have caught fish but does that I have enjoyed throwing lures with the combination very much. Today I went to Etomo Harbor twice, early in the morning and before sunset. I saw a lot of squid fishermen both time, but no one caught anything as far as I could see. One of them got surprised at the size of my plug and almost shouted, "Wow. Big Bait!" The plug was Super Strike Zig Zag, and actually it was not very big. He then asked, "For amberjacks? Did you see any baitfish?" I had to tell him, "No." He got visibly disappointed. So I cheered him up. "For you, they must be coming!”

I don’t like buying brand-new fishing reels. A new reel is flawless and shiny, so that it makes me feel it’s a jewel and I have to do anything to avoid it from getting scratches. However, my fishing, especially at a serious rocky shore such as Saruwatari or Safuki-bana in Nonami, sometimes requires me to allow my reel to get scratches. It is for my safety. If I make too much efforts to keep the aesthetic of my reel, I may end up getting less careful about my safety. So I like buying second-hand reels. A used one often already has scratches or even rust on it, so that I don’t need to mind its aesthetic. The more scratches on it, the safer. With such a pragmatic mind-set, I was examining some used reels on sale at one of local fishing tackle shops the other day, and one of so-called “jigging reels” caught my eye. It was Shimano Torium 1500HG. Why it caught my attention? Because the spool of the reel has two beautiful flanges.

（私は新品のリールを買うのが好きではありません。新品のリールは傷ひとつなくピカピカで、まるで宝石のように感じられ、何があろうと傷をつけてはならない、という気になってしまうからです。しかし、私の行う釣りでは、とりわけ野波の猿渡やサフキ鼻のような本格的な磯で釣る場合は、リールに傷がつくのを許さねばならない時があります。それは安全のためなのです。もしも、リールの美観を保つ努力をし過ぎると、自分の安全への配慮が欠けてしまいかねないのです。だから私は、中古のリールを買うのが好きです。中古リールには、すでに傷やサビすらあることが多いので、美観を気にする必要がありません。傷が多ければ多いほど、安全だというわけです。そんな現実的な考えのもと、先日、近所の釣具店で中古リールを物色していた時、いわゆる「ジギング・リール」の一つに目が留まりました。シマノのトリウム1500HGです。なぜ目に留まったのでしょうか？　そのリールのスプールには、美しい２つのフランジが付いていたからです。）

Based on my experience in using some old conventional reels such as Newell or PENN’s, I established a hypothesis. A conventional reel that has flanges on the sides of the spool can be a good “casting reel”, regardless of whether the reel has any additional breaking system other than the mechanical brake (tension brake) or whatever the application of the reel is labelled. Indeed, Torium 1500HG is labelled a “jigging reel” by the manufacturer itself, and some Internet anglers seem to just believe in the claim and even say the reel should not be used for casting. They might be wrong. If you place your thumb on the flange as an additional brake, Torium 1500HG could be a good “casting reel”. In order to prove it, I impulse-bought the reel at the shop and used it to throw my usual favorite lures.

（ニューウェルやPENNのような古い両軸リールを使った経験に基づき、私は一つの仮説を立てています。スプールの両側にフランジのある両軸リールは、メカニカル・ブレーキ以外のブレーキ機構の有無に関わらず、そして、そのリールの用途が何であるかというレッテルに関わらず、すべて、良い「キャスティング・リール」になる、という仮説です。実際、トリウム1500HGは、メーカーによって「ジギング・リール」と見なされていますし、ネット上の釣り人たちの中にはそれを鵜呑みにし、キャスティングでは使わないのが無難と言う人たちもいます。彼らは間違っているのではないでしょうか。親指をフランジに置いて追加のブレーキとすれば、トリウム1500HGは、良い「キャスティング・リール」になるのです。それを証明するため、私はそのリールを衝動買いし、いつものお気に入りルアーを投げるために使ってみました。）

The result was successful. I proved my hypothesis was correct at least for Torium 1500HG. The reel was already a good “casting reel” without any modifications, but later I added some modifications to the reel in order to make it a better casting reel. I ground down the small projection attached to one of gears to disable the so-called “clutch-auto-return” feature, which might be useful for the boat jigging but is just a nuisance for my fishing. This feature could be unintentionally activated during my casting motion. If my fishing line is not so strong, the line will break and my favorite lure be gone. I also removed all the parts for the “spool-lock” feature. As a result, the spool became 5 gram lighter. By the way, I feel this feature is a step backward not an advancement in the history of fishing reels. Do you know when you should use this feature? They say you should use it when your lure is stuck on the bottom of the sea. The feature will make the spool immovable, so that it gets easier for you to sever the line without any damage to the gears in your reel. So, may I say, this feature is to leave a plastic or metal garbage in the sea as efficiently as possible? What a crap.

（結果は上々でした。少なくともトリウム1500HGについては、私の仮説が正しかったことが証明されたのです。このリールは、何も手を加えなくても既に良い「キャスティング・リール」でしたが、その後、より良いリールにするため、いくつかの改造を加えました。ギアの一つに取り付けられていた小さな突起を削り、いわゆる「クラッチオートリターン」機能を無効にしました。この機能は、ボートからのジギングでは有用なのでしょうが、私がルアーを投げる際には邪魔でしかありません。キャスティングの最中に、意図せず作動させてしまいかねないのです。もし私のラインがそれほど強くなければ、ラインは切れ、お気に入りのルアーは失われてしまうでしょう。また、「スプールロック」機能に必要な部品もすべて取り外しました。おかげでスプールが５グラムほど軽くなりました。ところで、この機能は、釣り用リールの歴史において、進歩ではなく、後退ではないかと感じられます。この機能をいつ使うべきかご存知ですか？　ルアーが根がかった時に使うのだそうです。この機能を使えば、スプールは固定されて動かなくなり、リールのギアにダメージを与えることなく、ラインを切断しやすくなるのだとか。つまり、こう言ってもいいのでしょうか？　この機能は、プラスチックや金属のゴミを、できるだけ効率よく海に捨てていくためのものだと？　なんてことでしょう。）

It was such a fine day today that I pretended it was already September with some summer fish swimming around, waiting for me to throw big plugs toward the warm ocean. If I had some supernatural power, such as psychokinesis, I could have conjured some nice fish and caught them, but unfortunately I didn’t have such power, and the sea was too quiet all along.

（今日はとても良い天気だったので、もう既に９月になっており、夏の魚たちが泳いでいて、私が大きなプラグを大海めがけて投げるのを待ち構えているのだと思い込んでみました。もしも私に、念力などの超能力があれば、良い型の魚をおびき出して釣ることができたでしょうが、あいにく私にそんな力はなく、海はずっと静かなままでした。）

(No. 1170) Casting Performance/Practice with Childhood Friend in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe (宍道湖サンセットカフェの前にて幼馴染みとキャスティング演技／練習)

Wow. How beautiful the lake is! But, first of all, I would like to say that I was wrong about the 8 strand braided line. On one of my earlier posts, I said that the surface of the 8 strand braided line was so smooth that it couldn’t cut my thumb. Regrettably I have to say I was wrong. When I did casting practice for about 2 hours the other day, I found the braided line had carved a groove on my thumb and the skin was about to split. Now I use a nylon monofilament line again. Anyway, I went to the lake shore in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe this evening in order to do some casting performance/practice. I love the new combination of the Okinawa Manbika C100SSXH-P3 rod and the Newell G235-F reel with the nylon monofilament line on it. One of my old friends happened to come and took the above pictures.

(No. 1169) Continuous Casting Practice at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて引き続きキャスティング練習)

As I wanted to try my new heaviest rod at an actual rocky shore, I went to Saruwatari in Nonami this morning. While walking toward Saruwatari in the woods, I realized this would be the first time I have visited a serious rocky shore like Saruwatari since the Noto earthquake hit on January 1st. The sea was calm, but as soon as I reached the fishing spot, I looked back at the rocky mountain behind my back. I tried to imagine how I could climb it up to escape from a potential tsunami. Then I got intent on improving my pendulum cast.

（ヘビーな新竿を実際の磯で試してみたかったので、今朝、野波の猿渡へ行ってきました。 林の中を猿渡に向かって歩きながら、元旦に能登半島地震が起きて以来、猿渡のような本格的な磯を訪れるのは初めてだということに気づきました。 海は穏やかでしたが、釣り場に到着した私は、後ろを振り向き、背後の岩山を眺めました。岩山をどうよじ登れば、来るかもしれない津波から逃げることができるか、想像してみたのです。 そして私は、自分のペンデュラム（振り子式）キャストを改善することに熱中しました。）

(No. 1168) Casting Practice with My New Heaviest Rod (いちばんヘビーな新竿でキャスティング練習)

The reign of my Lamiglas Insane Surf as the heaviest rod in my fishing tackle is over. The new king is the Okinawa Manbika C100SSXH-P3 that I recently obtained at one of the secondhand tackle shops. The three-piece rod is so heavy that I felt I needed casting practice. So I went to Lake Shinji this afternoon. Compared to the new king, the Lamiglas Insane Surf felt much lighter and softer. Because the new rod was so stiff that I felt I would need to do the so-called pendulum cast in addition to the overhead cast, which I normally do. I alternately practiced the pendulum and the overhead casts. There was no difference in casting distance between the two methods, but I felt the pendulum cast a bit more fun today probably because I don’t do that very often.

（ラミグラス・インセイン・サーフが、私の釣具の中で最もヘビーなロッドとして君臨していた時代は終わりました。新たなキングは、先日、中古のタックルショップで手に入れたオキナワ・マンビカ C100SSXH-P3です。この３ピースロッドはとてもヘビーなので、キャスティング練習が必要だと感じました。そこで今日の午後、宍道湖に行きました。新しいキングと比べると、ラミグラス・インセイン・サーフはずっと軽くて柔らかく感じました。新しいロッドはとても硬かったので、普段やっているオーバーヘッドキャストに加えて、いわゆるペンデュラム（振り子式）キャストをする必要が生じるだろうと感じました。私は、ペンデュラムとオーバーヘッドを交互に練習しました。飛距離に差はありませんでしたが、普段あまりやらないせいか、今日はペンデュラムの方が少し楽しかったです。）

(No. 1167) No Fish at Beautiful Kurauchi Bay (美しき倉内湾にて釣果なし)

I needed to refresh myself again this afternoon, so I drove to Kurauchi Bay again. What my fatigued brain noticed was only how beautiful the bay was. Or, my brain was so fatigued due to the intense reviewing my own translation that the bay looked more beautiful than usual. Anyway I just enjoyed myself throwing favorite lures toward the very calm sea. A friendly squid fisherman came later, and I had a very nice chat with him. I found he is a fisherman who does a variety of fishing including the lure fishing that I do exclusively. He realized how unique my tackle was. It was such a pleasure to talk with a fisherman like him. With my brain revived I drove back to the world of unpolished translated sentences.

（今日の午後もリフレッシュする必要があったので、私は再び倉内湾まで車を走らせました。 疲労した私の脳が気づいたのは、なんて美しい湾なのだろう、ということだけでした。もしかしたら、自分の翻訳を集中的に見直したために脳が疲労し過ぎたせいで、湾はいつもより美しく見えたのかもしれません。とにかく私は、とても穏やかな海に向かってお気に入りのルアーを投げて、楽しみました。しばらくして、気さくなイカ釣り師がやってきました。彼は、さまざまな釣りをする釣り人でした。私がもっぱらやっているルアー釣りもやるそうです。彼は、私のタックルがいかに独特であるかに気づいたようでした。彼のような釣り人と話をするのは本当に楽しいことです。脳は蘇り、私は、未完成の翻訳文の世界へ戻るため、車を走らせました。）

(No. 1166) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (倉内湾と恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

I am in the final phase of one of my large-volume translation assignments. I have to carefully examine a translated sentence one by one. I cannot rush this phase although it’s tempting. It is a time-consuming phase, making me mentally exhausted. When I get mentally exhausted, I have to do something different to refresh myself. It should be something completely different from staring at my computer screen and trying not to miss any error or room for improvement. Fishing can be that something. So I drove to Kurauchi Bay this afternoon. Although nothing exciting happened, my mind got fully refreshed for another round of intense examination.

（私は今、大規模な翻訳仕事の最終段階に入っています。翻訳した文章を一つ一つ、注意深く吟味しなければなりません。ぱぱっと済ませたくても、済ませることはできないのです。時間がかかり、精神的に疲れます。精神的に疲れたら、何か違うことをしてリフレッシュしなければなりません。パソコンの画面とにらめっこし、誤訳や改善の余地を見逃さないようにするのとは、まったく違う何かをしなければならないのです。釣りは、その何かになり得ます。というわけで、今日の午後、倉内湾に向かいました。刺激的なことは何も起きませんでしたが、私の心はリフレッシュされ、再び集中的な吟味をする態勢が整いました。）

(No. 1165) Casting Performance/Practice in front of Shinjiko Sunset Cafe (宍道湖サンセットカフェの前にてキャスティング演技／練習)

This is my second post today. As I reported on my first post, I got an epiphany this morning about where and when to place my thumb on the spool of my Newell G235-F reel. After I did some translation job this afternoon, I became very keen to use the reel again. For me, throwing a lure with a conventional reel is much more fun compared to with a spinning reel, and the epiphany made it even more enjoyable. However, I didn’t have enough time to go to a rocky shore again. So I went to Shinjiko Sunset Cafe, a small stand on the shore of Lake Shinji.

（本日２度目の投稿です。最初の投稿で報告したように、私は今朝、ニューウェルG235-Fリールのスプールに親指を置く位置とタイミングについて、ひらめいたのでした。午後、翻訳仕事を終えた私は、またこのリールを使いたいと強く感じました。私にとって、両軸リールでルアーを投げるのは、スピニングリールで投げるよりも楽しいのです。そして今朝の天啓は、それをさらに楽しいものにしてくれました。しかし、また磯に行くには時間が足りません。そこで、宍道湖の湖畔にある小さなスタンド「宍道湖サンセットカフェ」に行きました。）

Shinjiko Sunset Cafe is open only when you can see a beautiful sunset over the lake. As you know, I interviewed a woman behind this unique cafe last summer, and since then I have sometimes appeared in front of the cafe with my fishing tackle. For some tourists I could be an interesting additional object in their pictures of the lake and Yomega-shima island. For others I could be an interesting local figure whom they feel they can easily talk to. One of those who talked to me this evening was N-san, who was a good friend of mine. She was with her husband, and he kindly took pictures of me. The epiphany on the favorite reel, the beautiful sunset, and the chance encounter with a friend of mine. What a nice day!

（宍道湖サンセットカフェは、美しい夕日が見られる時間帯のみ営業しています。ご存知のように私は昨夏、このユニークなカフェを企画した女性をインタビューしたのですが、それ以来、私は時々、釣り道具を持ってカフェの前に現れるのです。ある観光客にとっては、私は湖や嫁ヶ島の写真に写る面白いオブジェになるかもしれません。また、他の観光客にとっては、私は気軽に話しかけられる面白い地元民なのかもしれません。今日の夕方、私に話しかけてきたうちの一人が、私の友人であるＮさんでした。ご一緒におられたご主人が、親切にも私の写真を撮ってくれました。お気に入りのリールについての天啓、美しい夕日、そして友人との偶然の出会い。なんて素敵な１日だったことでしょう！）
