(No. 205) No Fish at Ichinose in Koizu (小伊津の一の瀬にて釣果なし)

Yesterday I did neither catch fish nor see baitfish at Sakitaka-hana in Sanami. Sanami is in Matsue City, where I was born and raised, and live now. Today I went to Ichinose in Koizu. Koizu is in Izumo City, which lies on the west of Matsue. Somehow I tend to feel there is a much better chance that I catch a yellowtail amberjack in Izumo than in Matsue, although the truth seems there is no such difference between them.

（昨日は佐波の先高鼻に行きましたが、魚は釣れず、ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿もなかったのでした。ところで佐波は松江市にあります。そして私が生まれ育ち、今住んでいるのは松江市です。私は今日、小伊津の一の瀬に行きました。一の瀬は、松江市の西にある出雲市にあります。どういうわけか私は、ヒラマサを釣るのなら松江よりも出雲の方が高確率だと思いがちなのです。実際のところは、そうした違いはないようなのですが。）

Anyway I arrived at a parking space next to Ichinose about 5 a.m. There were already a few fishermen around. The tide level was so high today that it became unusually difficult to walk to the end of the spot. In addition, I had to be careful about the strong waves that occasionally swept across the long rock on which a few fishermen and I were standing. I kept casting my lures tenaciously for about 3 hours, but nothing happened. I was with anticipation that there would be some difference between Matsue and Izumo, but I could not find any difference at least today. On my way to the parking space, I talked to a lure fisherman who had caught one small Wakana (young Japanese amberjack) earlier. Acknowledging my PENN Torque 5 spinning reel, he told me that he used to use some old PENN spinning reels. Comfortable chat with a friendly fisherman is often more worthwhile than just catching a fish.

（ともかく私は、午前５時頃、一の瀬の隣にある駐車スペースに到着しました。既に数人の釣り人の姿があります。今日は潮位が高く、釣り場の先端まで歩くのがいつもより難しくなっていました。さらには、私を含め数人の釣り人が立っている横長の岩を、強い波が時々洗うので、気が抜けません。私は３時間くらい、粘り強くルアーを投げ続けましたが、何も起きませんでした。松江と出雲では何かが違うのではないかと期待したわけですが、少なくとも今日のところは、何も違いはないようです。駐車スペースに戻る途中、小さなワカナ（若いブリ）を釣られていたルアー釣り師と話しました。私が使うPENNのトルク５・スピニングリールに気づくと、自分もかつてPENNの古いリールを使っていたことがあると言われました。愛想の良い釣り人との気楽なおしゃべりには、ただ魚が釣れることよりも、しばしば、より大きな価値があります。）

(No. 204) No Fish but Experimental Video at Sakitaka-hana in Sanami (佐波の先高鼻にて釣果なしも実験ビデオ)

I arrived at Sanami Harbor about 5 a.m. today. There were already three cars at the parking space. I saw two fishermen in the distance at the tip of the breakwater. There must be already at least one fisherman at Sakitaka-hana, too. That’s what I thought. I gave up Sakitaka-hana and drove toward Saruwatari in Nonami, but when I stopped my car to look down at Sakitaka-hana from a hillside, I saw no fisherman at the spot. I drove back and started fishing at Sakitaka-hana about 5:30 a.m. The current was not strong, but the sea was choppy. There were some nice patches of sarashi (white churning water).

（佐波港に到着したのは午前５時頃でした。駐車スペースには既に３台の車が停められています。遠く防波堤の先端には、二人の釣り人の姿がありました。先高鼻にも少なくとも釣り人が一人いるに違いない。私はそう思いました。先高鼻をあきらめた私は、野波の猿渡へ向かったのですが、車を停めて山の中腹から見下ろしてみると、先高鼻には釣り人の姿はないのでした。私は引き返し、５時30分頃から先高鼻で釣りを開始しました。潮の流れは速くないものの、海面は波立っています。いくつかサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）もできています。）

I thought I might catch a Japanese sea bass or a yellowtail amberjack, but nothing happened at all. I didn’t see any baitfish, either. Soon I got bored. So I took a picture to show another merit of a double-handled reel. With a normal spinning reel, you have to be careful when you put your tackle on the ground. If you are careless, your precious reel hits the ground and gets a scratch. With a double-handled reel, you are free from the stress. I also shot an experimental video titled, “From a Lure’s View Point.” I tied my waterproof camera to the fishing line, turned on the video recording, and cast the camera. After I finished such silly things, the sunlight streamed through the clouds and it got warmer. I was unable to resist the temptation. I concluded my fishing with swimming as usual.

（スズキかヒラマサが釣れるかもしれない、と私は思いましたが、全く何も起きません。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿もありません。私はじきに退屈してしまいました。そこで、ダブルハンドル・リールのもう一つの利点を紹介する写真を撮りました。普通のスピニングリールの場合、タックルを地面に置く時には注意が必要です。注意を怠ると、貴重なリールが地面に当たり、傷が付いてしまうのです。しかしダブルハンドル・リールなら、そんなストレスとは無縁です。また私は「ルアーの視点から」という題名の、実験的なビデオを撮影しました。防水カメラを釣り糸に結び、ビデオ撮影のスイッチを押してから、カメラをキャストしてみたのです。そうしたアホなことをやり終えると、雲の間から日光が差し込んできて、暑くなってきました。私は誘惑に抵抗できませんでした。例によって水泳をして、釣りを締めくくったのでした。）

(No. 203) No Fish but Nice Beer along Ohashi RIver (大橋川にて釣果なしも美味しいビール)

Unlike yesterday, I did not work very hard today, but I went fishing again in the Ohashi River after sunset. I did not keep the catch of yesterday, and my father did not completely understand the practice of “catch and release.” As soon as he knew that I had released the fish, he said to me regretfully, “Come on. You should have kept it. I wanted to eat it.” Unlike him, my mother completely supported my decision, because she does not like the dirty kitchen very much after I clean and fillet a fish. As is often the case, I could not catch the fish tonight. I rarely catch any fish when somebody specifically wants me to catch fish. I quit fishing and headed home before it started raining. When I was plodding on Kyomise, a small shopping street that is a few blocks away from the river, I found a signboard of a bar called “BLF.” I had not recognized there was such a bar in Kyomise. I hesitated for a while because I was carrying a long rod with a reel, but I got in the bar. Nice local beer and comfortable chats eased my disappointment of no fish.

（昨日と違い、今日はそれほど根をつめて働かなかったのですが、日没後、私は再び大橋川へ釣りに行きました。昨日釣れた魚を、私は家に持ち帰りませんでした。しかし私の父は「キャッチ＆リリース」という釣りの習慣を完全には理解していないのでした。釣れた魚を私が逃がしたと知るや、「なんだや〜。持って帰れや〜。食べたかったに〜」と残念そうに言うのです。父と違い、母は私の判断を完全に支持しました。なぜなら母は、私が魚をさばいて三枚に下ろした後の汚れた台所が、大好きなわけではないからです。よくあることですが、今晩、魚は釣れませんでした。「魚を釣ってきてほしい」と誰かが明確に私に望んでいる時、あまり魚は釣れません。雨が降り出す前に、私は釣りをあきらめ、帰路に着きました。大橋川から数ブロック離れた小さな商店街、京店をとぼとぼと歩いている時、「BLF」というバーの看板を見つけました。そんなバーが京店にあることに、今まで気づかなかったのでした。長い竿とリールを持っていたのでしばらく躊躇しましたが、思い切って入店しました。美味しい地ビールと楽しい会話のおかげで、魚が釣れなくてがっかりした気持ちが和らいだのでした。）

(No. 202) Japanese Sea Bass at Ohashi River (大橋川にてスズキ)

I worked so hard today that I started feeling mental fatigue by the evening. I felt I needed a break, so I grabbed a fishing tackle and took a walk to the Ohashi River after sunset. First I fished around Matsue Ohashi Bridge, the oldest bridge across the river, and then walked to Matsue Shin Ohashi Bridge. There was one fisherman who was casting a small lure toward one of the bridge piers. Generally, fish tend to be around a bridge pier. I said hello to the fisherman and passed by him to create an enough space between he and I. Most of my American lures are bigger, splashier and noisier than Japanese counterparts. I don’t like to offend serious lure fishermen who use smaller lures meticulously. So I ended up being kind of far away from the bridge. To my surprise, I caught a Japanese sea bass of about 60 cm (24 in.) at my first cast with a Classic Danny made by Couch’s Cedar Works (CCW).

（今日は根をつめて働いたので、夕方までには心の疲れを感じ始めていました。休憩が必要だと思った私は、日没後、釣り道具を持って大橋川まで散歩に出たのです。川にかかる橋の中では最古のものである松江大橋の周囲でまずは釣り、それから、松江新大橋へと歩いて行きました。橋脚の一つに向けて小さめのルアーを投げている釣り人の姿がありました。一般的に魚は、橋脚の周囲に集まりやすいのです。私はその釣り人に挨拶してから、通り過ぎました。その方と私の間に、十分な間隔を取りたかったのです。私が使うアメリカのルアーのほとんどは、日本のものよりも大きく、飛沫を上げやすく、騒々しいのです。小型のルアーを注意深く使われている真剣な釣り人の気分を害したくはありません。したがって私は、橋からやや離れてしまうことになりました。驚いたことに、カウチズ・シーダー・ワークス（CCW）が作ったクラシック・ダニーを投げた第一投目で、約60センチのスズキが釣れました。）

(No. 201) Mars Attacks? No, It’s a Reel! (火星人襲来？ いや、リールだわ！)

As I already reported, my new rod snapped at the last outing. Hoping I would catch a big yellowtail amberjack, I kept casting my lures for one hour with the damaged rod, but such a miracle did not happen. It was a shame that my report about the disgraceful tragedy marked the 200th post in my blog. I have been very sad since then. It seemed that my double-handled reel could not stand to see me in deep grief. When I woke up this morning, I saw another kind of miracle happening in my room. As if trying to cheer me up, the reel started moving by itself and walking toward to me like a good dog. It’s a miracle!
（既にご報告した通り、私の新しい竿は前回の釣行で折れてしまいました。大きなヒラマサが釣れることを願いながら、私は、折れた竿を使って１時間ほどルアーを投げ続けましたが、そんな奇跡は起きませんでした。本ブログの栄えある第200回目が、そんな恥ずべき悲劇の投稿となってしまったのは、ひどく残念です。以来、私は悲嘆に暮れております。私のダブルハンドル・リールが、悲しみに沈む私を見るに見かねたようです。今朝、目を覚ましてみると、別種の奇跡が、部屋の中で起きているのでした。まるで私を励まそうとするかのように、リールが自ら動き出し、愛犬のように私に歩み寄ってきたのです。奇跡です！）

(No. 200) Rod Snapped at Ichinose in Koizu (小伊津の一の瀬にて竿がポキリ)

My rod snapped during a long fight with a huge yellowtail amberjack. How wonderful it would be if I could say so. The truth is that my rod, a custom-made Rainshadow SU1418F (11’9”), snapped easily when I was adjusting the drag of my reel while pulling the line through the line guides. With the beautiful heavy rod that I purchased directly from an American rod builder last May, I arrived at Ichinose in Koizu, Izumo City, slightly after 5 a.m. today. There were already two bait fishermen at the spot. The tragedy happened about 30 minutes after I started fishing. Although in a state of shock, I kept fishing with the damaged rod for about one more hour. Using the rod without the tip was hugely inconvenient. I was thinking that it would be super funny if I caught a huge yellowtail amberjack with the damaged rod, but such a miracle did not happen.

（巨大なヒラマサとの長時間に及ぶ格闘の末に、竿がポキリと折れてしまいました。もしそう言えたら、どれだけ素晴らしいことでしょう。しかし真実は、私の竿、つまり、オーダーメードのレインシャドウSU1418F（11.9フィート）は、リールのドラグを調整しようとしてガイドを通っているラインを引っ張った時に、簡単に折れてしまったのでした。この５月にアメリカの釣り竿製作者から直接購入した、美しくてヘビーなその竿を携えた私が、出雲市の小伊津にある一の瀬に到着したのは、午前５時を少し過ぎた頃でした。すでに２人のエサ釣り師がいらっしゃいました。悲劇が起きたのは、釣りを始めて30分くらいたった時でした。私はショックで呆然としつつも、折れた竿を使ってさらに１時間ほど粘りました。先端部のない竿で釣りをするのは、きわめて不便でした。「折れた竿で、もしも巨大なヒラマサが釣れたら、めちゃくちゃ面白いぞ」と私は考えていたのですが、そういう奇跡は起きませんでした。）
