About this blog (このブログのこと)

My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 66) No Fish at Koura Public Beach & Etomo Harbor

I did my most favorite style of fishing today at Koura Public Beach. I wore only swimming trunks on the beach and alternately fished and swam. I had developed this style of fishing in New York City. While swimming at Koura Public Beach today, I remembered Brighton Beach and Breezy Point. With this style, your reel should be fully sealed. My PENN Torque 5 is as waterproof as Van Staal or ZeeBaaS, two legendary American surf reels.
I enjoyed swimming very much, but no fish seemed around. So I went to Etomo Harbor. There was one fisherman on a breakwater. I felt I was away enough from him, but, after I cast and retrieved my pencil popper, he yelled at me. “You ruined my makie!!” Makie a.k.a. komase is another style of fishing. Fishermen use a special ladle and scatter small bait to attract fish. I did not notice he was doing makie. My noisy big pencil popper seemed to scare away the fish that his makie attracted.
Feeling very bad, I apologized, “I am very sorry. I have been in the U.S. for 15 years without seeing any makie fishermen over there. So I forgot you guys use makie in Japan. I should have been careful and have asked you before I cast.” I offered him one of my American lures, but he refused it firmly. “No no no,” he said. “I can’t take such a precious lure. I feel sorry, too. I got too angry.” Shortly afterward he left the breakwater leaving me alone. Although he refused it, the offer is still open. Please accept my offer, Mr. makie fisherman!

(No. 65) Casting Practice at Lake Shinji

Some specialists say that one of the best fishing seasons at Lake Shinji is already over. The lake still holds many Japanese sea bass, but now they are not chasing konosirus punctatus, a relatively bigger baitfish. When Japanese sea bass chase this fish, they also aggressively bite big lures. Now that most of konosirus punctatus are dead or gone (I am not sure), Japanese sea bass start chasing or doing something else (not sure again). So I have not caught any fish for a few weeks at Lake Shinji, but it is always fun to get out after working hard and cast lures to the vast expanse of the lake. It is also a good exercise because my rod is long and most of my lures are absurdly heavy.

(No. 64) No Fish at Takashiro-bana in Kataku

Some lures and methods effective in catching striped bass in the U.S. are also effective for Japanese sea bass. For example, a big pencil popper can entice Japanese sea bass in Lake Shinji into frenzy just as it does in the U.S. This morning I applied the method to the other side of the Shimane Peninsula. I went to Takashiro-bana in Kataku to cast my big topwater plugs into the Sea of Japan.
There were already three bait fishermen for the largescale blackfish when I arrived at the spot around 5:30 a.m. Trying not to interfere with their fishing, I positioned myself away from them. I thought I was far enough, but my topwater plugs might have splashed too noisily for them. “Please don’t cast it too close,” one of them shouted to me. “Oh I am so sorry,” I shouted back.
I stopped casting and started a friendly chat with him. He told me that using a metal jig around the bottom of the sea is more effective in catching a yellowtail amberjack, which I was looking for, at this time of the year. He also taught me how to catch the largescale blackfish with krill. It is often fun to talk with somebody whose fishing style is different from mine.

(No. 63) A Series of Big Explosions at Lake Shinji

If you want to see a big explosion on the surface of Lake Shinji now, all that you have to do is to carry a big pencil popper such as Guppy Lure’s or Northbar’s and use it the way American surf fishermen do. Hold the rod at far above the reel seat while pinching the line with your thumb and forefinger, and shake the rod tip vigorously like a whip. The lure does not move forward much but keeps swinging crazily from side to side.
It makes some fish so excited that the fish cannot help assaulting the lure, but often they become too enraged to hit the target. They often attack some splashes that the lure makes, instead of the lure itself. That’s why you can see a big explosion on the surface. Yesterday and today I saw three big explosions. Two of them were so close to me that my heart almost stopped. At one time there was a spectator behind me. He said, “Wow! Huge!” Surprised by the explosion, he was as if filled with emotion.

(No. 62) Big Japanese Sea Bass at Lake Shinji

I went to the exactly same spot at Lake Shinji as I did yesterday. The spot is behind the legendary Japanese-style inn, Shoheikaku. Usually you can see some people jogging or walking on the lakeside bank, but this evening there was almost nobody around me because it was raining lightly. My Northbar Flying Squid did it again. This 20 cm pencil popper lured one fish into making a big explosion on the surface, but this time the fish bit it firmly. It was a big Japanese sea bass measuring 86 cm (34 in.) long.
