Having been unable to catch any fish, I have nothing to talk about actual fishing. So this post is about another hypothesis on fishing tackle. I like using a conventional reel on a spinning rod. Spinning rods are designed for spinning reels, not for conventional reels. I know that, but there are two reasons why I attach a conventional reel, such as my My PENN Fathom II 25N LD , to a spinning rod, such as my Palms Bluevision 96XH. Firstly, I like to reduce my belongings. I like to own fewer things. If I can live with just one rod, I want to live with just one rod. Secondly, and probably more importantly, the nearest guide ring on a spinning rod is much bigger and wider than the counterpart on a conventional rod. Conventional reels often lack the level-winding mechanism. Users have to level the line manually. And, here comes my hypothesis; If the nearest guide ring is wide enough, you don’t necessarily need to level the line manually. Thanks to the width of the ring, the line can be automatically leveled to a certain degree. The nearest guide ring acts unexpectedly as the level-winding mechanism. On the other hand, if the width is small, the line tends to be built up too much at the center of the spool, resulting in an uneven line lay, resulting in backlash. Above photos are a proof of my hypothesis. I dream someday someone creates rectangle- or oval-shaped guide rings for me.
