(No. 1388) Neither Fish nor Pictures at Naka-bana in Nonami (野波の中鼻にて釣果も写真もなし)

(Oh no. I just inadvertently deleted all pictures that I had taken today at Naka-bana in Nonami. I am sorry this post has no pictures.) The weather forecast said that it would deteriorate quickly this afternoon. The heavy snow might fall tomorrow onward. So I wanted to make full use of the fine weather of this morning. I wanted to go to Saruwatari in Nonami for the Japanese Spanish mackerel or the yellowtail amberjack, but it was already occupied. I decided to go to Naka-bana, a spot to the west of Saruwatari. Naka-bana is much less popular a fishing spot than Saruwatari, so some thorny plants had been left uncontrolled along the path in the woods. I cut all of them. I also renewed damaged red tapes I had attached to trees along the path. The red tapes would help fishermen to find the path. Although nothing exciting happened at Naka-bana, I felt satisfied (until all the beautiful pictures were inadvertently deleted).

（ （あらら。今日、野波の中鼻で撮った写真をうっかり全部消去してしまいましたよ。写真のない投稿でごめんなさい。）天気予報では、午後から急速に天気が崩れていくとのことでした。また明日以降は、大雪になるかもしれないとのこと。ですので私は、今朝の好天を最大限活用したかったのです。野波の猿渡に行って、サワラかヒラマサを釣りたいと思いましたが、すでに先客がいたのでした。しょうがないので、猿渡の西側にある中鼻に行くことにしました。中鼻は、猿渡ほどの人気はない釣り場なので、林の中の小道沿いに生えている棘のある植物が放ったらかしでした。私はそれらを全部刈り取りました。また、小道沿いの木に以前付けておいた赤いテープが破れていたので、新しいのに取り替えました。この赤いテープは、釣り人が林の中の小道を見つけるのに役立つのです。中鼻では特に面白いことは起きませんでしたが、私は満足していました（美しい写真をうっかり全部消してしまうまでは）。）

(No. 1387) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて釣果なし)

The waves in Kurauchi Bay were not as high as they were yesterday. Naturally, the size of sarashi (white churning water) along the shore was smaller today. Unlike yesterday, I was able to stand at the tip of one of big rocks and throw lures, but the imaginary Japanese sea bass that must have been under the yesterday’s big sarashi were already gone. Still, I enjoyed throwing lures very much. On my way back to my car, I noticed letters on one of the signboards I had set up fading. So I overwrote them with a magic marker.

（倉内湾の波は、昨日ほど高くありませんでした。当然ながら、岸際のサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）のサイズも小さくなっています。昨日とは違い、大きな岩の先端に立ってルアーを投げることはできましたが、昨日、大きなサラシの下にいたであろう想像上のスズキは、既に姿を消していました。それでも、ルアーを投げるのをとても楽しみました。車に戻る途中、以前設置した看板の文字が薄くなっているのに気づいたので、マジックで上書きしました。）

(No. 1386) No Fish at Etomo Harbor (恵曇港にて釣果なし)

The weather finally started getting better this afternoon. I drove to Kurauchi Bay first. I knew the waves would remain still too high for me to do fishing at the bay, but I was concerned that any puffer fish had been left on land. It turned out I had been overanxious. The big rocks on the shore got constantly washed by the high waves. If puffer fish had been left on the rocks, they would have been safely washed away. There was huge sarashi (white churning water) along the shore, and I got tempted to retrieve my lure under it to catch the Japanese sea bass, but I decided not to do it. The waves were so strong that I couldn’t take a chance. Instead, I drove to Etomo Harbor, where I unexpectedly saw only a few fishermen. I enjoyed throwing my lures using my favorite PENN 535GS reel. As I wrote before, the enjoyment I get from throwing a lure with the reel is incomparable to with other reels, regardless of whether they are spinning or conventional. No fish responded. I always feel sad when I see a huge cluster of crushed styrene foam. I wonder if anyone know any good idea to collect it all together.

（午後になってようやく天気が回復し始めました。まずは倉内湾です。波がまだ高くて、湾内で釣りはできないだろうと思ってはいたものの、フグが陸に放置されてはいないかと心配だったのです。しかし、私の取り越し苦労であることが判明しました。岸辺の大岩は、高波に洗われ続けています。仮にフグが岩の上に残されていたとしても、無事に海まで流されていたはずです。大きなサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）が岸辺にできていて、私は、ルアーをその下に沈めて、スズキを釣りたいという衝動に駆られましたが、波が高すぎて危険なので、あきらめました。代わりに恵曇港へ向かいました。いつもとは違い、釣り人の姿はまばらでした。私は、愛用するPENN 535GSリールで、ルアーを投げるのを楽しみました。以前も書きましたが、このリールでルアーを投げる楽しさは、それがスピニングであれ両軸であれ、他のどんなリールとも比べ物になりません。魚からの反応はありませんでした。私は、粉々になった発泡スチロールの塊を見ると、いつも悲しい気分になります。どなたか、あれをまとめて回収する良いアイデアをお持ちではないでしょうか？）

(No. 1385) If Cars Were Like Fishing Reels… (もしも自動車がリールのようであったなら…)

Sometimes I wonder why some reels have their spec information displayed on their bodies. For example, my PENN 535GS conventional reel has three stickers on it, which say things like “4 Ball Bearings”, “Capacity 15 Lb./400 Yds”, “Graphite Frame”, and “High Speed 6:1”. These types of information might be useful when you compare one reel to another at a tackle shop, but I don’t think they are essential. If you really need such information, you can ask a clerk and/or get the brochures. The fact that other reels don’t have such information displayed on their bodies (e.g., Van Staal) is a proof that they are not essential. But some manufactures, such as PENN, seem to like keeping this custom. I have a question for you. After you purchased one of such reels, how many times have you appreciated such information to be displayed on it? Almost none, right? Let’s think about cars. Do you know any cars that have their specs displayed on their bodies? Such as, “199 Ball Bearings”, "Metal Frame" or “Maximum Load Capacity 350 kg”. I don’t think I have seen such a car in my life. Why do only fishing reels keep displaying such information?

（私は時々、思うことがあります。リールのスペック情報がリール本体に表示されているのは何故だろう、と。例えば、私のPENN 535GSという両軸リールには、３枚のステッカーが貼ってあり、それぞれ「ボールベアリング４個」「糸巻き量15ポンド/400ヤード」「グラファイト製フレーム」「６対１高速ギア」といった内容が書かれているのです。こうした情報表示は、釣具店でリールを手に取って比較検討する際には役立つのかもしれませんが、必須ではないと思います。こうした情報がどうしても必要であれば、店員さんに尋ねてパンフレットか何かもらえばいいのです。本体にそのような情報表示のないリールも存在している（例えばVan Staal）という事実からも、こうした情報表示が必須ではないことが分かります。しかし、PENNなど一部のメーカーは、この慣習を維持することを好んでいるようです。そこで、皆さんに質問です。こうしたリールを購入した後、こういう情報が本体に表示されていてありがたかったと思えたことは、これまで何度ありましたか？　ほとんど、ないんじゃないでしょうか？　自動車で考えてみましょう。車体にスペック情報が表示されている自動車を見たことがありますか？　例えば「ボールベアリング199個」だとか「金属製フレーム」だとか「最大積載量350kg」というような。 私は見たことがありません。なぜ釣り用リールだけが、そんな情報を表示し続けているのでしょうか？） 

(No. 1384) No Fish at Kurauchi Bay and Etomo Harbor After Earthquake (地震のあと、倉内湾と恵曇港にて釣果なし)

It was at 10:18 a.m. when the first wave of earthquakes hit our region. I was working as an interpreter for an international video conference. Doing translation requires my utmost concentration and mental agility. Escaping from the danger of an earthquake, of course, requires my utmost concentration and mental/physical agility. Ripped apart by those two difficult tasks, I got almost panicked, but I managed to handle the dual situation. Fortunately, people around me didn’t get hurt. The authorities said there was no possibility of tsunami due to the earthquake although we should stay alert for a week or so. I couldn’t resist the temptation to go fishing. A big earthquake might affect the behavior of fish or not? I was thinking I might catch some unfamiliar fish for some reasons caused by the earthquake. That’s not the case. The sea remained the same. Apparently not affected at all. No response from fish.

（午前10時18分、地震の第一波が、この地域を襲いました。私は、国際ビデオ会議に参加して、通訳として働いていました。通訳をするためには、最大限の集中力と精神の機敏さが必要となります。地震の危険から逃れるためにも、もちろん、最大限の集中力と心身の機敏さが必要となります。この二つの困難な任務に引き裂かれた私は、パニックに陥りそうになりましたが、何とか二つの状況に対処することができました。幸いにも周囲に怪我人はありませんでした。当局によると、地震による津波の可能性はないものの、今後１週間ほどは警戒が必要だとのことです。私は釣りに行きたいという誘惑に抗うことができませんでした。大きな地震が起きた時、魚の行動には影響が及ぶのでしょうか？　私は考えました。地震の影響で、見慣れない魚が釣れるかもしれない、と。しかし、そんなことはありませんでした。海に変化はなく、どうやら何の影響も受けなかったようです。魚からの反応もありませんでした。）

(No. 1383) No Fishing at Tayu Harbor but Wonderful Tondo-san (手結港にて釣りなしも、素晴らしき「とんどさん」)

Today, January 3rd, is the day of Tondo-san, a new-year festival of Shinto for a good catch of fish. Residents in fishing villages along the shore of Shimane Peninsula, such as Tayu and Kataku, create a large structure, using bamboos, paintings, and models of some fish, and then raise it up. As I announced on my earlier post (No. 1374), I visited Tayu this morning to see Tondo-san. I had planned to do fishing inside Tayu Harbor after seeing Tondo-san, but I couldn’t do any fishing today. Because it took them much longer to create and raise up the structure than I anticipated. And the weather was not very friendly. The strong winds felt like ice, and the cold rain fell on and off. So when the villagers finally set up the structure, I didn’t have enough energy to do fishing. Instead, I created a dedicated website for Tondo-san in Tayu, where you can see more pictures. （今日１月３日は、正月に行われる大漁祈願の神事「とんどさん」の日です。島根半島沿岸の漁村、例えば手結や片句などでは、住民が、竹や絵、魚の模型などを使って大きな構築物を作り、それを立てて、掲げます。以前の投稿（No. 1374）でお知らせしたように、私は今朝、「とんどさん」を見学するために手結を訪れました。「とんどさん」を見終わった後は、手結港で釣りをしようと考えていたのですが、あいにく今日は釣りはできませんでした。構築物を作って立ち上げるのに予想以上に時間がかかった上に、天候があまり良くなく、氷のように冷たい風が吹き、時折、冷たい雨が降っていたのです。そのため、構築物が完成した時には、釣りをするためのエネルギーが残っていませんでした。釣りをする代わりに、手結の「とんどさん」に関する特設サイトを作りました。そこでは、より多くの写真を見ることができます。ご興味のある方は、ぜひご覧くださいね。）

(No. 1382) Annual Snow-shoveling Exercise Completed (毎年恒例の雪かきエクササイズ完了)

It started snowing this morning and quickly piled up. It didn’t take long for me to decide to go out with a big yellow shovel. I love snow-shoveling. Shimane Prefecture, which has my hometown Matsue City, is one of the least populated and most aging prefectures in Japan. When there is a large snowfall, we realize we don’t have enough number of men to get rid of all the snow. So I do snow-shoveling not only for my place but also for some local shops and houses. Doing such extensive snow-shoveling is good exercise, and every year I feel I get ready, physically and mentally, for serious fishing thanks to the exercise. Today is January 2nd, which means most people are still having a day off, which means few drivers struggle to get their cars out of parking lots and some shops don’t need snow removal at all. So I am not as exhausted as in previous winters, but I still feel I had a good exercise. I am ready for fishing.

（朝のうちから降り始めた雪はすぐ積もり、大きな黄色いスコップを持って外に出ようと決めるのに時間はかかりませんでした。私は雪かきが大好きです。私の故郷である松江市のある島根県は、日本で最も人口が少なく、高齢化が進んでいる県の一つです。大雪が降ると、すべての雪を片付けるのに必要な男手が足りないことがよく分かります。ですので私は、自分の家だけでなく、近所のお店やお宅の雪かきもしているのです。そのような大規模な雪かきをすると、良い運動になりますし、私は毎年、この運動をしているおかげで、心身ともに、本格的な釣りに耐えられるようになると感じています。今日は１月２日であり、まだほとんどの人が仕事を休んでいますから、駐車場から車を出すのに苦労している運転手はいませんし、除雪を全く必要としないお店もいくつかありました。ですので私は、以前の冬ほど疲れているわけではありませんが、それでも良い運動ができたと感じています。釣りをする準備は万端です。）

(No. 1381) No Fish but Happy Collection of Lost Rig at Tayu Harbor (手結港にて釣果なしもロストした仕掛けを幸せに回収)

Happy New Year! My first goal in 2026 is the old one carried over from last year. To catch a fish on a plug treated with “One Barbless Single Hook Solution” is still my goal. Some of you might have concluded I am an eccentric odd fisherman, and I strongly agree with you (lol). I believe what normal fishermen generally do is try to catch more fish in a more efficient manner. On the other hand, I have ended up being such a fisherman who wants to catch fewer fish in a more difficult manner. Anyway, what’s the most important thing is whether I am happy or not with such an odd attitude, and I can guarantee you that I am happy. So my escapade goes on this year.

（明けましておめでとうございます！　2026年の最初の目標は、昨年から継続されているものとなりました。「バーブレスのシングルフックが１つだけ解決法」を施したプラグで魚を釣ることが、依然として私の目標です。皆さんの中には、私のことを、奇妙な、変わり者の釣り人だと思われている方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。私も全く同感です（笑）。普通の釣り人ならば、なるべく効率よく、なるべく多くの魚を釣ろうとするのではないかと思います。一方で私は、なるべく難しい方法で、なるべく少ない魚を釣りたいという、そんな風変わりな釣り人に成り果ててしまったようです。ともかく、一番大切なのは、そんな奇妙な態度で自分自身が幸せかどうかということであり、皆さんに断言してもよいのですが、私は幸せです。という次第で、今年も私のとっぴな冒険は続きます。）

Today I did my best to catch a fish inside Tayu Harbor. The ocean was so rough that I couldn’t stand on rocks outside the harbor. Tayu Harbor has a unique feature. It has two openings, one of which is facing the north and the other is the south. So the strong current can run through the harbor. The ocean was very rough, so I hoped baitfish had found shelter in the harbor, and some big predators, such as the Japanese sea bass, were also in the harbor looking for the baitfish. But, that’s not the case today. Instead of catching a fish, I caught a lost rig which looked like one for octopus fishing with a certain length of braided line. I became proud and happy. Because now the sea had one less ghost fishing gear (ALDFG). By the way, I just released my annual New Year’s rap, which might be rather eccentric and odd just just like its creator. It’s all in Japanese, but if you are interested, check it out. Please do it at your own risk (lol).

（さて今日は、手結港の内側で魚を釣ろうと頑張りました。外海は荒れていて、港の外側の岩の上に立つことはできません。手結港にはユニークな特徴があって、北と南の２つの開口部があるため、港内を強い潮流が流れることがあるのです。外海が大荒れなので、私は、ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）が港内に避難しているのではないかと期待しました。そうなると、スズキなどの肉食魚も港内に入り、ベイトフィッシュを狙っている可能性があります。しかし、今日はそうではありませんでした。魚は釣れず、代わりに、ある程度の長さのPEラインが付いた、タコ釣り用ではないかと思う仕掛けが釣れました。私は、誇らしく、嬉しい気持ちになりました。なぜならこれで、海から一つ、ゴースト漁具（ゴーストギア）が減ったからです。ところで、毎年恒例の年賀ラップを公開しました。その作者同様、かなり奇妙で風変わりな内容になっている気がします。全て日本語なのですが、ご興味のある方は、ぜひ聴いてみてください。どうか自己責任でお願いします（笑）。）
