(No. 1240) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

There were a variety of baitfish around Saruwatari this morning. Some were slender and others were fat. Some were tiny and others were not very tiny. There were a few huge jellyfish (“Nomura’s Jellyfish”), too. The locations of those jellyfish kept moving, which should mean the current was moving. So I can say there were a lot of baitfish in the running current. It’s not easy to find a better opportunity to catch big predatory fish than this morning, but I got no response from them. I remembered I had watched a news program on TV a few days ago. They reported the farmed puffer fish had stopped feeding due to the fatigue caused by the summer heat. It was shocking to me because puffer fish are famous for their appetite. Having no response from any fish this morning, I wondered all fish in the sea had lost their appetite.

（今朝の猿渡周辺には、さまざまなベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）がいました。細身のものもいれば、太ったものもいました。小さいのもいれば、それほど小さくないのもいました。巨大なクラゲ（エチゼンクラゲ）も数匹いました。クラゲの位置がどんどん動いているということは、潮が動いているということでしょう。つまり、流れる潮の中にベイトフィッシュがたくさんいたと言えるのです。大型の肉食魚を釣るために、今朝ほどの絶好の機会はなかなかないと思うのですが、反応はありません。数日前に観たテレビのニュース番組を思い出しました。養殖フグが、夏バテのせいで餌を食べなくなったと報じていたのです。フグは食欲旺盛なことで有名なので、衝撃でした。今朝はどの魚からも反応がなく、私は、海の魚はみんな食欲がなくなったのだろうかと思いました。）

I overslept and started today’s fishing around 8:30 a.m., much later than usual. I didn't have much time for fishing because the highly-anticipated showdowns were imminent. So I was afraid. “What would I do if the yellowtail amberjacks were so responsive today? I might not be able to give up fishing early enough for watching the showdowns.” Fortunately and unfortunately, the sea around Saruwatari was so quiet as usual that no fish responded to my lures. So I became able to happily watch the two showdowns; Kamala vs. Donald and Yamamoto vs. Imanaga.

I read a few ominous articles in a local newspaper. They say the number of Shijimi clams in Lake Shinji is decreasing. They say the catch of so-called “Donchichi Aji” (fat-rich Japanese horse mackerels from Hamada City) has so decreased and been so inconsistent that the sustainability of the brand is in jeopardy. Something similar might be happening in the sea around Saruwatari. Because I had no response from any fish again this morning. Something globally ominous things due to the climate change might be affecting local fisheries. Or I am just a bad angler (“non-fisherman”). I hope only the latter is true.

（地元の新聞で不吉な記事をいくつか読みました。宍道湖のシジミが減っているそうです。また浜田市では、脂の乗った「どんちっちアジ」の漁獲量が減少している上、不規則なため、ブランドの存続が危ぶまれているそうです。猿渡周辺の海でも同じようなことが起きているのかもしれません。今朝もまた、魚からの反応がなかったのです。気候変動による地球規模での不吉な事態が、地元の漁業にも影響しているのかもしれません。あるいは、私が釣り下手なだけなのかもしれません（「無魚釣り師」）。後者の可能性だけが真実であることを願います。）

(No. 1237) My Recent Favorite Reel and No Fish at Ikesu in Etomo (最近のお気に入りリールと、恵曇の生須にて釣果なし)

 

I used to use the Daiwa LEXA-CC 400 low-profile baitcasting reel and loved it. Unlike other LEXA baitcasters, the LEXA-CC has the synchronised levelwind mechanism. Whenever the spool spins, the line guide keeps moving accordingly. In my humble opinion, if a lure is heavy enough, you can throw the lure farther with a synchronised-levelwind baitcaster. So I loved my LEXA-CC 400 more than other “normal” LEXAs I owned. But it has one problem. The gear ratio (6.3:1) is a bit too slow for retrieving my lures comfortably. So I sold it along with my other LEXAs. Recently I purchased a second-hand baitcaster with the synchronised levelwind mechanism. The reason why I decided to try it was that it has a higher gear ratio (7.1:1). It’s the Tailwalk Elan Super Wide Power 71R. Another good point about this reel is that it’s easier to disassemble it. All that you need is a few normal drivers. Although nothing happened to my lures around Ikesu this afternoon, I was very happy with my recent favorite. Tailwalk plans to release reels even with a higher gear ratio (8.1:1). Interesting.

（私は以前、ダイワのレグザ-CC 400ベイトキャスティングリールを使っていて、気に入っていました。他のレグザ・ベイトリールと違い、レグザ-CC にはシンクロナイズド・レベルワインド機構が搭載されています。スプールが回転する時は常に、ラインガイドもそれに応じて動き続けます。私見ですが、ルアーが十分に重い場合は、シンクロナイズド・レベルワインドであるベイトリールの方が、より遠くにルアーを投げることができます。だから私は、他の「通常の」レグザ よりもレグザ-CC 400の方が気に入っていました。しかし、1 つ問題があったのです。ギア比が、ルアーを快適に巻き取るには少し遅すぎたのです（6.3:1）。そのため、他のレグザと一緒に売却しました。先日、シンクロナイズド・レベルワインド機構を搭載した中古のベイトリールを購入しました。購入理由は、ギア比の高さ（7.1:1）です。それが、テイルウォークのエラン・スーパー・ワイドパワー71R です。このリールのもう一つの長所は、分解が簡単なことです。必要なのは、普通のドライバーが数本。今日の午後、生須周辺では私のルアーに何も起きなかったのですが、最近のお気に入りリールを使って、とても幸せでした。テイルウォークは、より高いギア比（8.1:1）のリールも販売するようです。興味深いです。）

(No. 1236) No Fish at Ikesu in Etomo (恵曇の生須にて釣果なし)

My work schedule is getting tighter, and I cannot afford to go to Saruwatari or Safuki-bana because either fishing spot might make me too fatigued to concentrate on my translation jobs afterwards. So I chose Ikesu, for which I recently cut the weeds along the path in the woods. The conditions of the sea looked the same as yesterday. There was a moderate swell, and it raised my expectations, but nothing happened. I didn’t see any baitfish.

（仕事のスケジュールが厳しくなってきており、猿渡やサフキ鼻に行く余裕はありません。どちらの釣り場に行っても、疲れすぎてしまいかねず、その後の翻訳の仕事に集中できなくなるかもしれないからです。そこで、生須を選びました。先日、林中の小道の雑草を刈った釣り場です。海の状況は、昨日と変わらないようでした。適度なうねりがあり期待が高まりましたが、何も起きませんでした。ベイトフィッシュも見当たりません。）

Contrary to what the weather forecast said, there was a swell around Saruwatari in Nonami this morning. I had expected a much calmer water. Many people believe a moderate swell is better for catching big fish, so my anticipations got raised, but nothing happened to my lures for an hour from 7 a.m. No baitfish was around.
