(No. 658) No Fish at Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の須々海鼻にて釣果なし)

I had been busy organizing a web conference last Sunday, so I could not find time to go to a rocky shore for some time. This morning finally I became free enough to go to Susumi-hana in Owashi. I took out one of my favorite old conventional reels: a combination of PENN Jigmaster 500’s side plates, PENN Silver Beach 99’s plastic spool, PENN Long Beach 65’s stand, and Newell’s spacer bars. The sea was choppy, and there were nice patches of sarashi around the fishing spot. Baitfish were spotted here and there. A vicious strike from the Japanese sea bass or the yellowtail amberjack seemed to happen at any moment, but unfortunately nothing happened to my American plugs.

（先の日曜日にウェブ会議を主催するので忙しくしており、磯に行く時間がしばらく取れませんでした。今朝、私はついに自由になり、大芦の須々海鼻に行きました。お気に入りの古い両軸リールを持ち出しました。それは、PENNジグマスター500のサイドプレート、PENNシルバービーチ99のプラスチックスプール、PENNロングビーチ65のスタンド、そしてNewellのスペーサーバーを組み合わせたものです。海は波立っており、釣り場周辺には良い感じのサラシ（かき混ぜられた白い水）が出来ていました。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）をあちこちで見ました。スズキあるいはヒラマサの激しいストライクが今にも起きそうでしたが、あいにく、私のアメリカのプラグには何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 657) Unfortunate Strike at Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の須々海鼻にて不運なストライク)

They say another typhoon is approaching. This morning it was Maruiwa in Owashi that I went first. The waves were not too high, but the very strong adverse wind was blowing. So I took a walk again to go to Susumi-hana. Fortunately I found a spot where the wind became favorable and I could be safe from the treacherous waves. When I was moving Guppy Lure’s Jobo Jr. on the surface, I saw a fish zigzagging around the lure and then hit it. Unfortunately the fish started swimming toward me. The fishing line became loose, and then the hooks of the lure came out.

（台風がまた近づいているそうです。今朝はまず、大芦の丸岩に行きました。波はひどく高くはありませんでしたが、とても強い向かい風が吹いていました。そこで私は再び歩き、須々海鼻に行きました。幸いにも、追い風が吹いていて、油断のならない波からは安全な場所が見つかりました。グッピールアーのジョボ・ジュニアを水面で動かしていた時、ルアーの周囲をジグザグに泳ぎ、そしてヒットする魚が見えました。あいにく魚はこちらに向かって泳ぎ始めました。釣り糸がゆるみ、ルアーの針がはずれてしまいました。）

(No. 656) No Fish at Sakitaka-hana in Sanami (佐波の先高鼻にて釣果なし)

First I drove to Saruwatari in Nonami this morning, but I had to change the destination. The waves were much higher than I had anticipated, and I was afraid that I could not jump over the narrow channel to reach the fishing spot. I decided to go to Sakitaka-hana in Sanami although I knew the spot might be already getting crowded. Fortunately I was the first fisherman to reach the spot, and I was followed by two bait fishermen. We shared the fishing spot friendlily, and I kept casting my favorite lures from 6 to 9 a.m. Nothing happened to my lures. The bait fishermen kept catching some small fish, but they did not look very satisfied.

（今朝はまず、野波の猿渡へ向かいましたが、目的地を変更せざるを得ませんでした。予測していたよりも波が高く、釣り場に行くために飛び越すのが必要な、例の狭い水道を飛び越えられないのではないかと思ったのです。既に満員になりつつあるのじゃないかなと思いましたが、佐波の先高鼻に行くことにしました。幸い、私が一番乗りだったのですが、続いて２人のエサ釣り師がやってきました。私たちは仲良く釣り場を共有し、私は午前６時から９時までお気に入りのルアーを投げ続けました。私のルアーには何も起きませんでした。エサ釣り師たちには何か小さい魚が釣れ続けていましたが、彼らはすごく満足しているようには見えませんでした。）

The yellowtail amberjack I had caught on my last outing to Saruwatari was given to one of small restaurants in my neighborhood. It’s reported that most restaurants have been struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic. So I wanted to support them. When I told my mother that the fish was not with us any more, she looked sad although briefly. She loves eating. That’s why I went to Saruwatari again this morning. The sea was choppier, and there were more baitfish around. The condition looked even better, but no yellowtail amberjack responded to my lures. Sorry Mom, maybe next time! 

（前回の猿渡への釣行で釣れたヒラマサは、近所のレストランに贈呈されました。コロナ禍のせいで、ほとんどのレストランが苦しんでいると報道されています。私は彼らを支援したいと思ったのでした。母に「釣れた魚は既に我々の手を離れました」と伝えると、一瞬でしたが、母の表情が悲しげになりました。母は食べることが大好きなのです。そこで今朝、私は再び猿渡へ行きました。海は前回より波立っていて、前回より多くのベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿がありました。前回よりさらに良さそうな状況でしたが、ヒラマサが私のルアーに反応することはありませんでした。ごめんよ母さん、おそらく次こそは！）

(No. 654) Yellowtail Amberjack at Saruwatari in Nonami on Guppy Lure (野波の猿渡にてヒラマサ、グッピールアーにて)

 

Except for very rare occasions when I used a few Swedish lures I had obtained in Stockholm, I have used only American saltwater lures since 2014. One of my goals in this endeavor was to catch a yellowtail amberjack using an American pencil popper, such as those of Guppy Lures. On this blog I have already proved that American pencil poppers were effective in catching the Japanese sea bass, which is very similar to the striped bass. You might have read a few of my older reports about the catches of the fish in Lake Shinji on the pencil poppers. Here I proudly present the catch of today: a beautiful yellowtail amberjack caught on the Guppy Lure’s Jobo Sr. Although it was not a big one, just 55 cm (22 in.) long, it pulled very hard. Using a pencil popper in the unique manner of American fishermen is effective in catching not only the Japanese sea bass but also much faster fish, such as the yellowtail amberjack. I finally did it.

（ストックホルムで購入したいくつかのスウェーデン製ルアーを使った稀な時を除けば、2014年以来、私はアメリカのソルトルアーのみを使ってきました。この試みにおける目標の１つは、ヒラマサを、アメリカのペンシル・ポッパー、例えばグッピールアーで釣ることでした。アメリカのペンシル・ポッパーは、ストライプド・バスによく似たスズキを釣るのには有効であることを、私はこのブログにおいて証明してきました。ペンシル・ポッパーで釣れた宍道湖のスズキについての過去の報告を、ご覧になった人もいるかもしれません。ここに私は、本日の釣果を誇らしくお伝えいたします。グッピールアーのジョボ・シニアを使って、美しいヒラマサが釣れました。大型ではなく、全長は55センチでしたが、非常に強く引きました。ペンシル・ポッパーをアメリカの釣り師のユニークな方法で使うことは、スズキだけでなく、もっと速い魚、例えばヒラマサを釣るのにも有効なのです。私はついにやったのです。）

(No. 653) Casting Practice at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてキャスティング練習)

Due to my tight work schedule and unfortunate bad weather, I am not sure when to go to a rocky shore of the Shimane Peninsula again for the yellowtail amberjack or some stray pelagic fish. However, I cannot live without casting my favorite lures regularly. So I walked to Lake Shinji this afternoon in order to enjoy casting practice. My current favorite setup is as follows: reel is a combination of PENN Jigmaster 500’s side plates, PENN Silver Beach 99’s plastic spool, and Newell’s spacer bars and stand; rod is Gamakatsu Pop Shaft 83. Actually this rod is a spinning rod, not for a conventional reel. I just don’t care. What fun!

（きつい仕事の日程とあいにくな悪天候のせいで、次いつ、ヒラマサあるいは仲間からはぐれた遠洋性の魚を狙って、島根半島の磯に行けるか分かりません。しかし私は、定期的にお気に入りのルアーを投げないと生きていけないのです。そこで、今日の午後は宍道湖まで歩き、キャスティング練習を楽しみました。現在お気に入りのタックルは、以下の通りです。リールは、PENNジグマスター500のサイドプレート、PENNシルバービーチ99のプラスチックスプール、そしてNewellのスペーサーバー及びスタンドを組み合わせたもの。ロッドは、ガマカツのポップ・シャフト83。実はこのロッドはスピニング用で、両軸リール用ではありません。でも気になりません。なんて楽しいのでしょう！）

(No. 652) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

The typhoon was gone. Some regions have suffered power outage, but the general impact of the typhoon didn’t seem as devastating as they had anticipated. I detected a slight chilliness this morning at Saruwatari in Nonami. It felt like a chilliness that could tell the coming of autumn. Or it might have been a just trace of the typhoon. The sea was very calm as if it had never experienced a wild thing such as a typhoon. I sighted a school of baitfish here and there. They could be an indicator of the presence of predators, but nothing happened to my lures.

（台風は去りました。いくつかの地域では停電が起きていますが、台風による一般的な影響は、予測されていたほど破壊的ではなかったようです。今朝、野波の猿渡では、かすかな冷気が感じられました。その冷気は、秋の到来を告げるもののように思えました。あるいはそれは単に、台風の名残であったのかもしれません。台風などといった荒々しいものは一切経験したことがないかのように、海は、とても穏やかでした。ベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の群れを、そこここで目撃しました。肉食魚の存在を告げる印であったのかもしれませんが、私のルアーには何も起きませんでした。）

(No. 651) Missed Amberjack and Polystyrene at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて青物を逃す、そして発泡スチロール)

The sea was not rough but the cross wind was already strong when I started fishing about 7 a.m. this morning. Another typhoon was approaching, and they said this one could be more devastating. The cross wind was becoming stronger, and it became more and more difficult to cast a lure comfortably, but I kept throwing it tenaciously. About 9 a.m. a silver flash snatched my Tsunami TS Popper. Not a big fish but it pulled strong. When I reeled the fish in at my feet, it dashed toward the bottom of the sea. Then it came off. I wondered if it was a small yellowtail amberjack. I should have remained happy the whole day thanks to this encounter, but my happiness instantly vanished when I saw too many particles of polystyrene floating on one of tide pools around Saruwatari.

（今朝、午前７時頃に釣り始めた時、海は荒れてはいなかったものの、すでに強い横風が吹いていました。台風がまた近づいており、今度のは壊滅的な被害をもたらし得るとのことでした。横風は強まり、ルアーを快適に投げるのがどんどん困難になっていきましたが、私は辛抱強く投げ続けました。９時頃、ツナミのTSポッパーをひったくる銀色の閃光が見えました。大きな魚ではありませんが、強く引きました。足元まで寄せると、魚は、海底目がけて突進しました。そしてバレてしまいました。小型のヒラマサだったのだろうか、と私は思いました。この出会いのおかげで今日は丸一日、幸せなはずでしたが、私の幸福感は一瞬にして消え失せました。猿渡周辺の潮溜まりに発泡スチロールのつぶつぶが大量に浮いていたのです。）

(No. 650) Missed Unfamiliar Feeble Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて正体不明の弱々しい魚を逃す)

When I started fishing about 7 a.m. this morning, the water around Saruwatari in Nonami was stagnant. The current did not seem moving at all, and there were some garbages floating motionlessly on water. I did not think I would catch any fish under such a lethargic condition, but something was hooked on when I was retrieving one of the Gator Casting Spoons. I was not sure if it was a fish or not because it did not move at all. Then I saw a silver flash of it. It looked a fish-like flash. Only when I reeled it in at my feet did I get sure it was a fish, and as soon as I recognized it was an unfamiliar fish, the hook of my lure came off and the fish was gone. The current started moving later, and the condition got better, but my lures could not induce a strikes any more.

（今朝、午前７時頃に釣り始めた時、野波の猿渡周辺の海は淀んでいました。潮は全く動いていないようで、ゴミが微動だにせず水面に浮かんでいました。こんな気だるい条件では魚は釣れないだろうと思いましたが、ゲーター・キャスティング・スプーンを引いている時に何かかかりました。まったく動かないので、魚なのかどうか確信は持てませんでした。そして銀色の輝きが見えました。魚のような輝きでした。足元まで巻いてきて初めて、それが魚であることが分かりました。馴染みのない魚だなと思った瞬間、ルアーの針がはずれ、魚は行ってしまいました。その後、潮が動き始め、条件は良くなりましたが、もう私のルアーにストライクはありませんでした。）

They said that a typhoon was approaching, and the wind became stronger when I left my place this afternoon. I expected to see higher waves around Susumi-hana in Owashi. However, although the strong wind was blowing, I found the sea was unnaturally calm. In other words, I felt something deceptive in the surroundings. I tried to be more careful than usual. After all, nothing exceptional happened except that my lures flew exceptionally far thanks to the favorable wind.

（台風が近づきつつあるとのことで、今日の午後、家を出た時には風が強まっていました。大芦の須々海鼻の周囲はきっと波が高いだろうと思いました。ところが、たしかに強風は吹いていたものの、海は不自然なほど穏やかでした。言い換えると、周囲には何か、人を欺くようなものがあるように感じられました。そこで、いつも以上に注意深くあろうとしました。結局、何も異常なことは起きませんでした。追い風のおかげで私のルアーが異常に遠くまで飛んだだけでした。）
