(No. 92) Longtooth Grouper at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の南防にてクエ)

I have worked so hard this weekend that I felt I needed a short break this afternoon. So I went to Etomo Harbor this evening. Before casting my lures, I found an empty beverage can left on Nanbo, one of the breakwaters in the harbor. Of course I picked up the can. Then, I started casting my lures from the tip of the breakwater. I saw some small predatory fish chasing baitfish on the surface. They seemed young Japanese sea bass. One young lure fisherman who came later and kept casting a small vibration plug caught one of them just before sunset.

（今週末はずっと忙しく働いていたため、今日の午後は、ちょっと休みを取る必要があるように思いました。そこで夕方、恵曇港に行ったのでした。ルアーを投げる前、恵曇港の防波堤の一つである南防で、コーヒーの空き缶が捨てられているのを見つけました。もちろん私は空き缶を拾いました。そして、その防波堤の先端からルアーを投げ始めたのです。捕食性の小さな魚が、水面でベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）を追い回しています。どうもセイゴ（スズキの子供）のようです。後からやって来て、小さなバイブレーション・プラグを投げていた若いルアー釣り師が、日没の直前にそのセイゴを釣りました。）

I didn’t have any small plugs. Instead, I took out a Northbar Bottledarter, whose size is 18 cm in length and 2.5 oz. in weight. It is almost as big as the young Japanese sea bass. Just at sunset, when I was about to give up fishing, I hooked something. It pulled hard. I thought it was a medium-sized Japanese sea bass, but actually it was a longtooth grouper of 42 cm (17 in.). Do you remember my “Those who pick up the litter will be rewarded” theory, which I explained in my past posts No. 85 and 86? Well, this evening the theory seemed to prove right again.

（私は小さなプラグを一切持っていません。かわりに、長さが18センチで重さが70グラムのノースバー・ボトルダーターを取り出しました。釣れたセイゴと、ほとんど同じ大きさのルアーです。日が没し、そろそろ釣りを切り上げようと思った時、何かがかかりました。強く引きます。中型のスズキではないかと思いましたが、42センチのクエでした。皆さんは、No. 85と86の投稿で私が説明した理論、「ゴミを拾った者にはご褒美がある」を覚えていらっしゃるでしょうか？　どうやら今夕、この理論の正しさがまたもや証明されたようです。）

(No. 91) No Fish at Ichinose in Koizu and around Mitsu Harbor (小伊津の一の瀬と三津港の周辺にて釣果なし)

Today I was the first to arrive at Ichinose in Koizu, Izumo City. I started fishing when it was getting light before 6 a.m. Then, one lure fisherman and a few bait fishermen came to the spot. I stayed there until about 7 a.m. and it seemed nobody caught any fish. After chatting two other fishermen briefly, I left the spot and drove toward Mitsu Harbor. Leaving my car where the paved road ends, I walked to Setokaze-bana, where I had gotten a strong bite last time, but this time there was neither bite nor fish.

（今日は、出雲市の小伊津にある釣り場、一の瀬に一番乗りでした。明るくなり始めた午前６時前、私は釣りを開始しました。それから、一人のルアー釣り師と数人のエサ釣り師がやってきました。私は７時前までそこにいましたが、誰にも何も釣れていないようです。二人の釣り人と軽くおしゃべりをしてから、私はそこを離れ、車に乗って三津港方面に向かいました。舗装路が終わっているところで車を下り、瀨戸風鼻まで歩きました。前回、強烈なバイトがあった釣り場です。しかし今回は、バイトもなく魚も釣れません。）

I walked to Nakanoshima, where the following strong wind was slightly sideways, so that I had trouble in controlling my line to keep it from touching an isolated rock to my right. I walked back to Setokaze-bana. No fish again. I drove to Takase, a big rock at the east end of Mitsu Harbor. No fish here, either. It was almost 9 a.m. when I drove back to Ichinose. Then I kept casting my lures tenaciously for 30 minutes. Just when I finally gave up and decided to go home, I saw a boil over which a few seagulls were hovering. The boil disappeared instantly, but it extended my stay for 10 minutes in vain.

（私は中の島という釣り場まで歩きました。強い追い風が少し斜めに吹いているため、右手にある孤立した岩に釣り糸が触れないよう操作するのが難しい状況でした。私は瀨戸風鼻まで戻りました。しかし、またもや何も釣れません。車に乗り、三津港の東端にある巨岩、高瀬と呼ばれる釣り場に行きました。ここでも何も釣れません。車に乗って一の瀬まで戻った時には、もう午前９時になっていました。私は執念深く30分間、ルアーを投げ続けました。ついにあきらめて家に帰ることにしたちょうどその時、ナブラが立ち、数羽のカモメが上空を舞っているのが見えました。ナブラはすぐに消えましたが、おかげで私の滞在は無駄に10分間、延長されてしまったのでした。）

(No. 90) No Fish at Sanami Harbor (佐波港にて釣果なし)

Although it rained on and off today, I went to Sanami Harbor this evening and fished for 2 hours before sunset. When I come to the place, it is usually for going to Taka-hana or Sakitaka-hana over the harbor. If you want to catch stronger fish such as a yellowtail amberjack or a red sea bream, you should go to those spots where the water is deeper and the current can be stronger. That’s what the “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook” says. This useful guidebook also says you can catch Japanese sea bass inside the harbor if the ocean is stormy and there is a rain. Today it rained and the sea was choppy. It might not have been stormy but at least it was not calm. So I hoped I might catch the fish, but I didn’t. I will wait for another storm.

（今日は雨が降ったり止んだりしていましたが、夕方、佐波港に行き、日没までの２時間、釣りをしました。私がこの場所に来る時、それはだいたい、港の向こうにある高鼻か先高鼻に行くためです。ヒラマサや真鯛のような、より強い魚を釣りたいのならば、水深があり、潮の流れも強くなるそうした場所に行かねばなりません。『山陰の釣り場総覧』にはそう書かれています。この有益なガイドブックにはまた、外海が時化（しけ）ていて雨が降った時には、港の内部でスズキが釣れるとも書かれています。今日は雨が降りましたし、海も波立っていました。時化ではなかったかもしれませんが、少なくとも凪（なぎ）ではありませんでした。ですから、スズキが釣れるかもしれないと期待しましたが、釣れませんでした。嵐が来るのを待ちます。）

(No. 89) No Fish at Ichinose in Koizu (小伊津の一の瀬にて釣果なし)

We arrived at Ichinose in Koizu, Izumo City, about 5 a.m. I was with a friend of mine, who had introduced me to fishing in Sakaiminato City this year. Today I introduced him to Ichinose. It was still very dark when we arrived, but we could tell even from the parking space that the swell was strong and the waves swept across the rocks sporadically. We came closer to the edge of rocks and waited for dawn. There was one lure fisherman before us, who did the same as we did. When it was getting light, we started casting our lures while keeping an eye on the swell and waves. The friend of mine got a faint bite. It was probably a Japanese Spanish mackerel because he found a tooth mark on the lure. A bait fisherman who came later caught a yellowtail amberjack, and another lure fisherman caught a Japanese Spanish mackerel, but we didn’t catch any fish. We quit about 8:30 a.m. because the swell got even stronger. Of course, we vowed to take revenge.
（私たちが出雲市の小伊津にある釣り場、一の瀬に到着したのは午前５時頃でした。今年になって境港市での釣りを私に紹介してくれた友人が一緒でした。今日は私が一の瀬を紹介する番です。到着した時はまだ真っ暗でしたが、うねりが強く、時々、波が岩場を洗っていることが駐車場からでも分かりました。私たちは岩場の端に近づき、夜明けを待ちました。私たちの前に、１人のルアー釣り師がいて、私たちと同じように待機しています。明るくなると私たちは、うねりと波に注意しながら、ルアーを投げ始めました。友人にかすかなバイト（魚がルアーを噛むこと）がありました。ルアーに歯形が付いていたそうなので、どうやらサワラのようです。遅れてやって来たエサ釣り師がヒラマサを、別のルアー釣り師がサワラを釣りましたが、私たちには何も釣れません。うねりがいっそう強くなったので８時30分に切り上げました。もちろん私たちはリベンジを誓いました。）

(No. 88) Strong Bite around Mitsu Harbor (三津港の周辺にて強いバイトあり)

Before 6 a.m. I passed by Mitsu Harbor in Izumo City to start fishing at the spot called Setokaze-bana. As soon as I started casting my Hopkins No=Eql against the wind, I felt a bite. It was such a strong but brief tug that I was almost stunned. Unfortunately the fish (or some powerful creature) was not hooked. Soon the head wing got unbearably strong, so I walked westward to another spot called Nakanoshima. There was one pair of lure fishermen nearby, but it was only 7:30 a.m. when they quit fishing and went back. They might have concluded no fish would be caught today. I stayed a bit longer but in vain. Thinking that the pair must have been a regular here, I went back to my car, too. Then, I drove to the spot called Takase, a big rock at the east end of Mitsu Harbor. Hoping I would feel another strong bite, I kept casting until 9:30 a.m. but nothing happened.

（午前６時になる前に、私は出雲市の三津港を通過し、瀨戸風鼻と呼ばれる場所で釣り始めたのでした。ホプキンス No=Eqlを投げ始めるやいなや、バイト（魚がルアーを噛むこと）を感じました。それは、私を唖然とさせるほど力強く、そして短い引きでした。残念ながらその魚は（あるいは何らかの強力な生物は）針にかかりませんでした。間もなく向かい風が耐えられないほど強くなったので、私は西方へ歩き、中の島という別の釣り場に行きました。二人組みのルアー釣り師が近くにいましたが、まだ７時30分だというのに、もう釣りをやめて帰ってしまうのでした。今日は何も釣れないと見切ってしまったのかもしれません。私は少し粘りましたが、ダメでした。「あの二人組みは、ここの常連に違いない」と考えながら、私も車に戻りました。そして、三津港の東端にある巨岩、高瀬と呼ばれる釣り場に行きました。強烈なバイトがまた来ないかな〜と思いながら、そこで９時30分まで粘りましたが、何も来なかったのでした。）

(No. 87) No Fish at between Mitsu Harbor and Ohtoko-bana (三津港と大床鼻の間にて釣果なし)

Ichinose in Koizu, which gave me a hard-fighting, beautiful, and tasty striped bonito last time, is a great fishing spot. The access to it is very convenient. It is just several minutes away on foot from the parking lot. However, if you feel like doing good exercise, Ichinose is not your place. I became a bit bored with Ichinose, and today I wanted good exercise. So this morning I passed by Mitsu Harbor, which is to the west of Ichinose, and left my car where the paved road ends. Then I walked westward along the rocky shore toward Ohtoko-bana, a famous fishing spot that I mentioned a few times on this blog, as I cast lures whenever and wherever I could. I reached the spot called Minose-no-Nishi, which is beyond the halfway point from my car to Ohtoko-bana. It was almost one-hour walk. I did not catch any fish, and probably I spent much more time on walking than on fishing, but now I feel refreshing fatigue that I cannot have when I go to Ichinose.

（前回、力強く引いて美しく、そして食べて美味しいハガツオをもたらしてくれた小伊津の一の瀬は、素晴らしい釣り場です。釣り場へのアクセスがとても優れているのです。駐車場から歩いてほんの数分です。しかし、もしあなたが適度な運動をしたい気分ならば、一の瀬は適していないでしょう。私は一の瀬に少々飽きていましたし、今日は運動をしたい気分でした。ですから今朝は、一の瀬の西にある三津港を通り過ぎると、舗装路が終わっているところで車を停めました。そして、私は西にある大床鼻方面に向かって磯を歩いたのでした。大床鼻は、このブログで何度か触れたことのある有名な釣り場です。ルアーが投げられる時には投げながら、私は歩きました。私は「美野瀬の西」という釣り場まで到達しました。そこは、私の車から大床鼻までの距離の中間地点を超えた場所でした。だいたい１時間位は歩いたと思います。何も釣れませんでしたし、おそらく、釣りをした時間よりも歩いた時間の方が長いのですが、一の瀬に行った時には味わえない、心地良い疲れを今、感じています。）
