I have been a kind of tourist attraction on the northern shore of Lake Shinji since I caught the big fat Japanese sea bass the other day. There is no specific attraction around where I often fish except for the famous sunset and Yomega-shima island you can see in the distance. Indeed the view is gorgeous, but It might look a bit dull. You cannot have a chat with the sunset or the island unless when you feel broken-hearted or melancholic. On the other hand, you can talk to me. So I am a rare two-way tourist attraction. In order to induce tourists to initiate a chat with me, I have to look interesting. I have to make them interested in my fishing. From my experience I know I get most attention when I am using an American pencil popper the way American fishermen do, and a spinning reel is a better equipment for me to do that than a conventional reel. So these days I use my PENN Torque 5 spinning reel. Today I brought the reel to Safuki-bana in Nonami with one of pencil poppers. I had even thought I wouldn’t need to use a spinning reel ever again in my life, but I was mistaken.
（先日、よく太った大型のスズキを釣って以来、宍道湖の北岸で私は、一種の観光アトラクションになっています。私がよく釣りをする場所の周辺には、有名な夕焼けと遠くに見える嫁ヶ島を除けば、特にアトラクションはありません。確かに眺めは素晴らしいのですが、ちょっと退屈かもしれません。失恋したり憂鬱である時を除けば、夕焼けや島と、おしゃべりはできません。一方、私となら、おしゃべりできます。つまり私は、珍しい双方向の観光アトラクションなのです。観光客が私とおしゃべりを始めるよう仕向けるには、私は興味深く見えねばなりません。私の釣りに興味を持ってもらわねばならないのです。これまでの経験から、最も注目を集めやすいのは、アメリカのペンシル・ポッパーをアメリカの釣り師の方法で使っている時だとわかっています。そのように使うためには、両軸リールよりもスピニングリールが適しています。ですので最近は、PENNのトルク５というスピニングリールを使っています。今日はこのリールを、ペンシル・ポッパーとともに野波のサフキ鼻に持ち込みました。スピニングリールを使う必要は、もう一生、ないだろうとさえ思っていた私ですが、それは間違いでした。）
