The friendly fisherman whom I met at Kumodeno-hana in Izumo City on last Sunday (No. 398) told me that this had been a good year for him and his fishing buddies. He said that they had caught yellowtail amberjacks on every occasion almost without fail. What a contrast! As you know, this has been a bad year for me. I have been skunked without fail. Interestingly, last year seemed the opposite. While I caught a few nice fish on American lures last year, some of my friends that used Japanese lures said they were not so lucky. Are American lures effective when Japanese lures are not, and vice versa?
（この前の日曜日（No. 398）に出雲市の雲出の鼻で遭遇した友好的な釣り人が言うには、今年は、彼と彼の釣り友達にとって、当たり年だそうです。釣りに行くと、ほぼ間違いなくヒラマサが釣れているのだとか。なんと対照的なことでしょう！ 私にとって今年は、皆さんご存知の通り、はずれ年です。釣りに行っても必ず、ボウズなのです。面白いことに、去年は正反対のように思えました。アメリカのルアーを使っている私に、良い型の魚が数匹釣れた一方で、日本のルアーを使う私の友人たちは、それほど良い釣果ではないと言っていたのです。アメリカのルアーは、日本のルアーが不調な時に好調であり、その逆もまた真なり、なのでしょうか？）
Anyway, I started fishing at Saruwatari in Nonami about 7 a.m. this morning and kept casting my lures for 2 hours in vain. Before I left the fishing spot, I took pictures of my lures and also of my Korkers Rocktrax, a cleated overshoes that I have long used. At last I found a satisfying method for not losing the carbide spikes of the overshoes. Probably I am going to explain it on my next post. I am afraid that it will interest few Japanese fishermen, but I want to post it for some overseas fellows.
（ともかく今朝は、午前７時頃から野波の猿渡で釣り始め、それから２時間、ルアーをむなしくキャストし続けました。釣り場を離れる前に、ルアーの写真と、愛用しているスパイク付きオーバーシューズ、コーカーズのロックトラックスの写真を撮りました。ついに私は、このオーバーシューズのスパイクを失わないための満足できる方法を見出したのです。おそらく次の投稿でご説明することになるでしょう。日本の釣り人の皆さんはほとんど関心を持たれないと思いますが、海外の皆さんのために投稿したいのです。）
