I left the distinguished
Super Strike Zig Zag at home this morning. I had taken out the lure last time
and caught my first yellowtail amberjack after I came back to Japan in 2014. If
I had taken out the lure today, I would have relied on it too much. I would
have used it too often. I thought that would be boring, so I said goodbye to my
Zig Zag reluctantly and took out other lures that had not yet proven to be
effective in Japan. One of those lures was a Guppy Lure’s 2 oz. Mini.
（大殊勲を立てたスーパーストライク・ジグザグを、今朝は家に残していったのでした。前回、私はこのルアーを使い、2014年の帰国以来初めてとなるヒラマサを釣ったのです。もしも今日、このルアーを持って出ていれば、私はこのルアーに頼り過ぎてしまったことでしょう。このルアーばかりを使い過ぎてしまったことでしょう。「それは退屈だなあ」と考えた私は、泣く泣くジグザグに別れを告げると、日本ではまだその有効性が証明されていないルアーたちを持ち出しました。そういうルアーの一つに、グッピールアーの２オンス・ミニがありました。）
Although this pencil popper drew vicious strikes at Lake Shinji, I had not landed any Japanese fish with it. I know American pencil poppers are effective in catching the Japanese sea bass, but what I would like to prove now is how effective they are in catching amberjacks. Unfortunately, today was another day on which I could not prove it. After I gave up fishing, I shot the lure splashing around on the surface, wondering if this unique splashy movement could attract attention of the fish. I also swam in order to take underwater pictures. The water was still swimmable.
（宍道湖においては何度か激しいストライクがあったものの、このペンシル・ポッパーを使って日本の魚を釣ったことはまだありません。アメリカのペンシル・ポッパーがスズキ釣りに有効であることは分かっていますが、私が明らかにしたいのは、ヒラマサやブリにはどれくらい有効なのか、ということなのです。しかし残念ながら、今日もまた、それを明らかにできる日ではありませんでした。私は釣りをあきらめると、水面でバシャバシャ動くこのルアーの動画を撮影してみました。「飛沫をあげるこの独特な動きは、ヒラマサやブリの興味を引くのかしら」と考えながら。そして私は、水中写真を撮るために泳いだりもしました。まだまだ水泳が可能な海でした。）
